OK, as promised a build of the Gehl with a name that pup option.
So I wasn't really looking but was in the market for another bucket and came across this Gehl skid steer about 2 miles from me. 80hp Duetz turbo diesel, runs great.
Just 1450hrs and except for paint, seat and tires it was a nice looking machine. Plus it has a nice toothed bucket for al the digging coming up. Plus the zero turn will come in handy with many things (finding that a challenge with the Kubota)
Supposed to pick up Monday, but my leave there until I get new tires for it. Rears aren't bad, front terrible. Foam filled but doubt I need that were I am. I can get (4) 12-16.5 tires for under $600 shipped but may get with rims as a swap nearby for a few hundred more. Plus cutting the foam tires off does not thrill me.
Besides that a good service (oil never changed, says 05' on Hyd filter) and clean up the wiring which works fine, but some hanging.
New seat (thinking suspension) and LED lights front rear with BU Camera.
Now onto a few pics for the name that pup fun. Base for the paint will be tan to blend with where is going with a thin blue line some (suggested and I like!)

Peddle controls and the floor plate is there to. Everything worked great.
-
If the tires are foam filled you run them until they are slicks then toss the rim and all. Anyway thats what the guys around here do.
-
60 HP?
And, I think I'd agree with the suggestion for tracks, considerin' you are buildin' in a big sand trap.
My name suggestion remains, "CHIPS" California Highway industrial patrol shooters, or something like that
Ya I know you were not a state police guy, but a county deputy, but the name goes back to police in the california. Anyway, that's my suggestion.
-

Thought they recycled the foam so there is less waist/fill?
Looking at tires with wheels, didn't savor cutting old tire off.
Pretty sure just going with air tires and puncture sealant for my needs.
-
Well lets just say they might accidentally be placed in close proximity to a bon fire. Then the rims get hauled in for scrap iron.

So, any closer to a name?
Could go with a friendly guy name, like joe
Then you could say, "Wait a minute, let me go get joe"
The rest of us would wonder if you were going for quoffee, some guy named joe, or the skidder
See how that works?
-
Well, we have "Chips", "Joe", maybe "Skip"?
Any more?

I’ve never felt the urge to name equipment. But I tend to use names to poke fun at others or myself. Like my Redneck license plate even if others use it pejoratively.
So I’d be likely to use “piggy” “donut” 10-16, code 3, BOLO, DID etc
Or something like Scooby....

Tex. I have a long standing no name policy. Lots of my coworkers name ( even sticker them) with thing like Betty the work can or WhiteyMCford on the 2x4 work/shop truck and so forth. Never felt the need to name anything like that
None of my vehicles have a name.

Ordered tires today and industrial stop leak. Soon as I get it here will start on the tires.
-
I don’t name vehicles or equipment either.....
My old red dog on the other hand has about six different names depending on her attitude or lack there of at that particular moment.
-
Tires are Carlisle Ultra Guard in 12-16.5. Not the cheapest but much better reviews than the cheap tires.
Basically a brand I have heard of and the deepest tread.
Looking at this base and still working on the seat. Figure between this and aired tires it should be easier on my old back.

Me too, still sitting at the guys house. Raining here and don't want to drive it over.
Wow, I've seen the guys on 2 wheels, but not that.
-
How 'bout Deputy Dug? ;-)
It would be cool, and I like it, but probably needs to be one syllable
Something like "Dug" with a stenciled name, Deputy Dug on the backside might work...
-
I kinda like that. Dug for short.
Got a bud who works Const and we ran over and brought it home today. Ran great but controls need tweaking. Held full left and had to steer with right for any speed and the darn flat spot on the left front was interesting.
Needs lights and a BU camera. Well monitor as I have several cameras.
Raising the seat will be great as I am a little cramped in there and a little susp will help too. Now I can lift the cab and see the pattern.
No tires until next week, so I have a week to get these off the rims.

Hey Jr, if the tracking is off you may be able to adjust it at the pump linkage. it sucks trying to go straight and having to feather the lagging side.
-
^^^^^ He would know!
-
There is an arm adjustment under the floor, think that will do it. 1 bucket line leaks, will replace both.
Biggest thing is the service, tires and seat. Like to run hyd lines on the boom too.
I like ""Dug", think that'll work fine.
-
Trying to get some info for this I was told by Gehl to contact the local dealer, about 20 miles away, 1 in Reno too.
Found out it is a 1998 model, made from 99-04 from other info.
-
Label on the inside has the filter numbers, score there.
Used the sawsall on one tire seeing what I am in for with changing these tires that will be here Monday.
Surprised it seems to cut like butter. Even using the 20v I cut around about 1/2 the center in about 5 minutes.
-
So 3 of the 4 tires showed up today. I really like these tires and the tread is nice and deep.
Need new struts for the cab lift and engine cover, but so far the AVM numbers don't crossover from my searches.
-
Good looking tires. Let’s hope they last more than 1400 hours.
Any more progress getting the old ones off?

-
Yea, so I wonder just how long tires last on a "Skid" steer?
I guess it depends on what surface you use them on
The tracks on my machine are getting chewed up...But my babying my equipment, I can't see why

Maybe it was used by an asphalt paving company, on asphalt.
..or, like a lot of equipment around here, the hours aren't accurate because of tampering.
(I just described my mini x with a worn out bucket at 1800 hrs)

How are the pins and bushings on it JR?
-
How are the pins and bushings on it JR?
So far they look OK. Needs a good lube for sure.
Raised the cab and its a little messier on the left drive motor than is normal. Hopefully just a hose end, needs a few replaced anyway.
Got the Dmax going so have some time for it now.
-
Now that the rain has stopped today, I can get back on this some.
All the tires came in but the mounting past is missing. Said it was delivered yesterday but not here or the neighbors.
Then as I am typing this I get a knock from a guy 8 house down where it as delivered, not the first time as his house number and mine share numbers in a diff order.
Got the first tire off tonight, not bad at all really. The 20v sawsall did OK, but broke out the 110v Craftsman and boom, 5 minutes and it was off, another 5 for the foam donut (heavy cuss).Cut around the center, just off each bead and that was it. Using the new Diablo Carbide blades, worth every penny!
New tires bars worked great, didn't even need any jiz on them (not much left really). What got me is they were like soft rubber with no cords at all.
Spent another 1/2hr or so scaping the foam off the rim, then wire brushed it all. Threw a coat of rustolium on the bead area for mounting tomorrow.
-
So far, so good,,,,,,,,,,
-
I'm out of breath just watching you do that.
Didn't you say it wasn't that bad? Looks pretty horrible to me!
-
Not even really that messy. Easy to throw the tires away too in parts. Probably foam to in time.
With that foam the tires are heavy though.
-
What did new wheels cost? Was it worth the bending over?

About the best I found was $110 each, so for an hour of labor I am good. Believe me, I thought that way too.
-
So after about 2 hours with a pressure washer it looks pretty good inside. Lots of gunk on the bottom (20 years?) that has no drain hole, but there is a skid plate that I can remove. Think it will get a drain hole while out.
Still needs some TLC and some wires cleaned up. Biggest thing there is an little elec. box hanging loose that controls the hydraulic mixes. Think I have it figured out, but here is a pic. Think it mounts to those holes under the seat.
Still trying to match the color for the paint. Nothing in cans, khaki is close though for now. 1st rim is painted and had to buy new valves since the pack I got are MIA.
Next is I want to mount a tow ring on the back. Thinking about just a good ol weld on D ring or an eye for a D ring. What do you guys think?
Gas struts are needed too. Rear is easy to lift but would be nice if it stayed up. Just a 12" ram with 5/16 ball ends, but the factory AVM numbers don't interchange.
Cab struts are gone too. I can lift it, but it is like doing a free press. They are AVM numbers too, but probably run $100 each.
Just ordered light bar for the front and LED bulbs for the rear. Seat came in, but the suspension base is still shipping.
-
If you can figure out how much those struts are lifting, in lbs., these are probably cheaper.

Thx, been looking at a few charts. Just guessing at # right now.
Raining again,,,,,,,,,,
-
Got enough fluid Hyd for a change with all the other fluids.
Got a parts book of the internet, answers a few things.
Mounted up the first tire. Wasn't terrible and remembered a few things.
Cold tires are hard to mount and these have a stiff as crud sidewall (good for sealing though). Don't skimp on the lube and I need a better bucket for mounting.
-
Anyone have a grapple on their tractor? Kinda like a 4 way, but lots cheaper here!
Selling the other bucket I picked up would almost pay for it and I have lots off brush to clear and they are anal about fire clearance at the ridge.

-
Might just build my own, yep another project.
Changed the hydo oil yesterday, made a huge mess but was on dirt and had lots of kitty litter,,,,,,,
Oil looked bad, flushed out best I could with fuel. Got all these filters for the price of 2 at napa from fleetfilter.
Doesn't look bad inside for 21 years old, but did need a good cleaning.
-
Suspension seat base came in and a new light bar, combo flood/beam.
-
First tire on, got to work on the paint too. Leaves the cab black for now.

Haven't seen anyone use a bolt on grapple but seen a few (on utube) with a whole grapple bucket. Andrew Camarata uses the heck out of his.
Matt just posted a video using one to rip out brush.

Been watching lots of his stuff. Cool castle and how he says nothing is very expensive when he buys cranes and SDs all over.
Just watched him do a cylinder head.
2nd tire came off in 5 minutes, foam is being a pain and cutting off now.
Oh, no new rims out there for this model unless I use spacers.
-
Could always just recenter new wheels or shells.
-
I have a bolt on grapple for my Kubota. I took it off because it doesn’t work well unless the sides of the bucket are open to allow the bottom of the bucket to get under the log. Eventually I want a QD system and a grapple bucket.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
My wheels are fine, just need RR. Wheels were looking like an option since I have 2 good tires I could have recouped about 1/2 the cost of the rims with less labor.
I have lots of brush and junipers for the pad, no logs. Maybe the toothed bucket alone will scrape them out good enough to pile.

That works
-
Finally got the 2nd tire/foam off the rim. What a pain on this one, but really about an hours work.
Had to cut all the foam off this one piece by piece. Tire was the easy part!
-
JR
From here the left side of the rim is bent to heck. Will the tire seat on the bead or is it just a bad angle of the picture and all is good?
-
There was a small dent i fixed with few hammer blows.fine besides that.

So after fighting with the second tire for a couple hours, I found rims for just $110 each shipped. Rear tires are good, so figure I can sell them for $100 each and offset new wheels a little.
Found I could have gotten the same tires and rims, mounted up for around $100 more. Would have been more than worth it.
New rims have 1/2 more offset which will be fine.
While I wait for them, got lights and the new seat to mount. Clean it up some more and paint if the rain stays away.

I hear that. Little time lost is all.
Got a Bluetooth/usb player for it too. Magnetic mounting so can us it with both tractors and in the container.
Just need a butt warmer if it stays cold. No volt gauge so

Putting the thing up on blocks and the 2ton jack wouldn't cut it. Relief valves said no.
Front is on blocks to drain/refill the chain oil so only lifting the back. Of course that is where the engine and all the fluids are on the 7k machine.
Ran down to HF and got the 4ton Daytona Floor jack which will end up at the Ridge.
Always seems to be the one not on sale I need or no coupon like several of the 3 tons.
-
HF, only time their stuff doesn’t work is when you need it and you are a long ways from a store.

There should have been a 25% off one item coupon you could have capitalized on yesterday. I just purchased a new 3500 lb winch for the atv Tuesday. The first one worked for 5 years of snow plowing before it failed. After the tear down I am wondering if my install may have been the root cause of failure. If I can get another 5 years out of the next one I will be happy.
-
Does not work on Jacks, I tried!
-
So waiting for the wheels I was throwing around the idea of the grapple and rock bucket. With the time and $4-500 it would run for parts, I decided to just go new.
So after some research, looking local and all I went this this; https://www.skidsteerattachmentdepot.com/product/66-light-duty-rock-bucket-grapple-teeth/
So I sell the 72" bucket I have (going for 1K local on CL) and it costs me about the same.
I do plan on a few mods, like a step grate, maybe doubling the tines and doubling the teeth.
-

I have the heavy duty version of that, works fine
Do not sell your standard bucket, you will need it (a lot!)
-
Just selling the new bucket I picked up cheap. I will still have the 72in smooth bucket (Kubota), 66in toothed that came on the Gehl and the new Grabble Rock bucket.
Have the Box blade, forks and the thumb on the backhoe. Maybe a crane attachment later and a drag of some type.
-
I found a service label in the cab showing it was just 100hrs past due service by hours, still 15 years though.
Got it all lubed up and replaced a couple grease fittings. Nothing took what I would say was crazy amounts of grease, some still pushed out the old.
Trying to clean up this mess of wiring now, showed earlier too. Only real electronics on it for the AUX and balancing the bucket.
Got the old seat out too.
-
Loosened up the engine cover, it needs a little hammer work and paint.
Dropped the rear inspection plate, what a mess. Good 2 inches of goo there. Both it and the front will get a drain hole.
-
Well, these finally showed up today. Got a couple mounted up pretty easy, but the cold makes the rubber pretty stiff.
These rims are a bit lighter, but have the valve guard. You can also see the rim guard on these tires.
Plan on letting them sit for a week filled up then add the leak stop.

Old rim didn't need it as the valve was set back. Would have been harder to pop the bead on that too.
-
Got all the gas struts and put the 2 on the cab. Way nicer to lift it up, not press 100lbs. Well spent $100.
With that done I and the skid plates off I got to blowing it out. After a few minutes I have come to the conclusion this thing has been in a flood of some type. There is just to much in there and packed in for it to just end up as it is. Don't think it really poses and issue, just a bare to clean out!
The seat platform needs a drain, water just sits there during cleaning. Going to pull the insulation pads before the seat goes in so they get a good cleaning.
Need to figure something out for this switch. Wires were cut off and taped. This would be a momentary switch, there is a dup on the panel that is not momentary for constant run items.
I wouldn't mind changing to all hand controls, but not sure if that's even possible yet.
-
Got the grappler in, 1101 came in handy again.
Welds are not what I call great, but overall fair.
Needs a couple spacers where the rams attach, less slop, less wear.
Also got another set of weld on teeth to match what are on it. These look way to far apart for picking up brush, so we will see.
-
I really feel like that ram needs some bushings on each side.

Yep

Flushed the drive reservoirs using atf followed by a little diesel.
Replaced the drain bolts funky rubber seal with good ol copper.
Check out the view underneath, this is after a couple hours with a pressure washer from the top. SO much more to get out. Going to do it on the street using the curb and blocks.

-
Prepped the tires for pain along with Dug. Going to use latex acrylic which I can paint match and should work.
Quick coat of flat on the inside and outside scuffed for paint.
-
Pulled the pins on the claws for spacers and am not happy. Looks like the holes were cut open and not even cleaned up. This calls for a welded sleeve IMHO now.
Inside of Dugs frame after spending hours blowing it out. This will need treating for sure and a couple drain holes up front.
-
Wow, they didn't even knock the slag off.
-
In reality there should probably be a machined bushing in that hole.
But yeah the lack of quality is hard to miss and not machining that hole and pressing in a bushing saved how much? Any grease zerks, maybe I missed those too?
Was the piece heavily discounted?
-
Just the low end model. Overall OK, but all the pivots like that suck.
Going to clean those up and add a bushing to both sides, then a zerk. Figure that will double the surface and take out the slop. Was just going to do washers, but not after seeing this.
I can always do real bushing later after I see how it holds up. Another set of teeth to weld on too.
-
Just ordered some 1.5 steel rod. Will bore a 1 inch hole in that and bore the mounts to 1.5. Weld the whole thing in and drill a grease zert.
Main pivot looks OK for now, but it may get the same later.
-
Finally had the time and the weather to paint this thing a little. Using a Valspar Achrilic Latex which goes for about $40 gal. Matched a sample from the land and went down a shade since it was still wet.
Sprayed it with a HF HVLP and it worked great. No showroom quality for sure (went on to heavy) but for a tractor, fine.

Bought a quart to start. It goes on really good, even on unprepped areas, but time will tell. Going to spray some more and use a foam roller too.
Heading up to the prop this weekend, been a month now with holidays. It should go up in a couple weeks.
-
Aww heck you don't need no stinking grease. As my bosses dad use to say before he left this world..... If it don't take grease just pour some used oil on it.

Have to get it done this week and up at the prop. Garage is such a mess I can barely work on anything.
Had a cracked weld on the bucket, cleaned that up. Looked for hooks to place on the bucket, MIA for now. (messy garage)
Since it is running though I used it to move both my LS motor and the air comp to the side of the house.
-
After moving stuff around I am back to finishing.
Got new lexan up on the roof today, old was nasty. Used silicon vs the 3M tape they had, way cheaper and could adjust for a few seconds.
Doing some work on the bucket too. Got in new teeth as these are all diff lengths, namely end ones are used pretty much up.
Question on the quick release teeth though. I believe mine are installed backwards. Shouldn't tapered side go the other way? This way gives no give to the mount at all.
-
The taper looks backwards to me. If there's mud or anything binding, the taper supposed to keep tightening and take out the slack... that's why they're spring loaded.
-
Yeah, that's what I thought too. This way they are hard to close but I opened em fine.
One more job,,,,,,,,,,,,
-
Well, its just the one side so not that bad.
Replaced the out teeth on the bucket, insides were still pretty good.
Rear panel back on, just needs a little paint.
"Skylight" came out good.
-
Chugging, slow as may be.
Finally got the rest of the sludge out of the bottom. Just need to get some converter in there.
Little more painting and wiring/electrical.
Trying to get it up to the prop this weekend. Going to take the claw up too as is. Just going to shim the rams and see how it goes. Should fit in the bucket, 1 inch less than the bucket.
-

At least 1 bucket line was leaking so having them all 4 made up.
Tested the couplers for the claw, all is good.
My last 3 point bracket is supposed to be in later this week after over a month looking for it.
-
Got the drain holes drilled and panels painted. Kept the inside yellow (cat yellow matches good) to see things that leak or fall.
4 new hoses were over $200, but I got adapters to -8an and can use generic hoses now. Also had to knock loose the ram pin and shave an old wrench to fit.
Put new covers on the hoses and got it buttoned up. Now the right bucket ram leaks  Not terrible but it runs out the seal.
Adding a main 12v shut off. Now just have to wire the rocker for the 3rd function.

Wheelies are fun. Just don’t do it with a bucket of manure. Don’t taste so nice.
Technically the back cover will keep you from going over backwards as long as no load in the bucket.
The forks will right you from certain positions. But not on you side...

So got all the wiring cleaned up, new battery terminals and a main shut off next to the seat.
Battery hold down made from a little angle and an inner tube.
Downhill run now, just a couple accs., lights and some more paint.

Ran out of time tonite, tomorrow will be busy on this and the claw. Son performs in a charity USO show tomorrow night, then I am off, hopefully.
Claw still needs spacers and teeth welded on. Plus loading it into the regular bucket for the trip.
Dug needs a little more paint and the lights, 3rd control hooked up.
Getting the old switch out is proving tuff. Looks like they filled the cavity with epoxy.

Loading it up now after getting almost everything done. Probably bring back to rebuild the rams. Have some work around the house too but need to get the pad cleaned off up there.
Got the switch box cleaned out, but not sure about the wires, but I have a rocker on the panel that does it too.
Looks like normal inside now, cept the switch. New anti skid, light bar and little things.
-
Thought claws would fit into the bucket, but the bucket is tapered in the back just enough to say NO.
Had to sling it from the 1101 and figure a way to mount for the trip, came up with this.
While there is was easy to add a few more teeth to the claws. Those should eat brush really well. Only needed 5.

Mileage sucked with that big scoop back there .
Pulled it off the trailer and it was stuck, all 4 spinning in the dirt.
What the heck7
Somehow the spare rolled out and high centered me.
-
That sucks!
Know anyone with a skid steer that could help you out?
-
Awww Man!
I know how that has to feel
I'm thinking you will need a tracked machine
Now that Dug is all purdied up you can sell it and double your money, then go for something with a lot of weight and as much HP as you can find/afford.
-
Once you got it off high centered did it get around ok?

Just used the bucket and pushed it up n off.
Gets around good.learning curve on foot control's, keep wanting to use hands.
Toothed bucket is nice but still struggles a little. I am in the worse spot though cutting last 50ft road into hillside.

Oh, grapple works great for smoothing road.

Color blends well.

And total investment to date Jr?

Little over 10k with the tires and wheels. Not including attachments. Ram has stopped leaking for now, but will source a couple kits since I saw a seal coming out.
That brings up an issue though. No hyd control to the claw cept open, need to figure that out.
-
Dug is running great. Lowered the tire pressure to 35 as is was digging in to much. Traction is great.
It can't handle the rock up there digging, so I put the backhoe back onto the Kub.
Guess I lost the lexan up top on the trip up. Silicon did not hold it like the tape.
Even though the seat is new, it is not tall enough. Back is not happy at all and I get stiff using the foot controls.
-
Not many thinks will stick to lex, pre drill some holes and use some self tappers.

That's 1/4 up there, probably need to tap but not a big deal.
Going up this weekend, hope the weather holds. I need my front hyd working so I got a few switches to try (2 push and 1 toggle) D/L the sheet showing how to adjust the little box that controls it, just 3 wires in the handle. Long as I don't burn anything up, should be good.
I'd like to add front hyd to the Kub also. Looks like the main block is easy to get too. Heck add it to the rear to for other stuff!

You are keeping busy my friend. Two houses/properties make for a busy boy

Need to replace the seat again. Suspension works fine but it is too low and hurts my back.
Needs a seatbelt too. Was a really wide one on it but it was toast. I feel like I am sliding off the seat as I use the foot peddles and can't steady myself.
Neither is a real pricey item, but I need the right ones.
Still haven't fixed the front aux hydro.
-
So you just need risers for the seat? Sounds simple and unless the oem seat belt is cheap a simple race waist belt should work and be cheap.
-
I have a belt but the seat needs a higher back and something to hold me better in the seat.
I have this, just 14" for the back rest.
Looking at this which is 3-4" taller and has some side support.

Still haven't got the joystick aux working. Looks like I may just drag it home for a few days. I have some work for it here and can address a few little things too. New seat, switch, hook up rear LEDs and it needs a cup holder desperately.
Also looking at OTT tracks. It has great traction, but digs in way to much and I almost went over this last week on a soft berm and much of the area I am working now is a wash area and very soft. Plus with snow and rain they would be great.
2 options I am looking at are the Eel River Tracks, about $1500 with shipping and tax. https://youtu.be/HG4msYxMJdQ
Or these that uses AR400 link and are about the same price; https://www.ebay.com/itm/Skid-Steer-Loader-Over-Tire-Steel-Tracks-OTT-12x16-5-Tires-Standard-Link/303163987035
Most others seem to be in the $3000 range even used with shipping.

Drug Dug home this weekend with the claw. Will add the high back seat and get the front hydro working.
Was a long haul home. After the DMax tire issue it was almost 10 when I started loading. Really wasn't bad, but it caught a pad and kept sliding off center. Ended up loaded about 1ft to far forward because of the claw, so I cranked up the pressure to max. Dmax was sitting about 2in lower in the back than normal. You could feel it pushing a little, but not enough to cause a problem. Got 14mpg on the way home. Not great but with the hills and sail back there is was OK.
When it was loaded I dropped the key and it went into the frame. Couldn't find the spare so figured to hot wire and get another key when I get home. Hot wired easy, then found the key under a tire. Guess those holes I drilled paid off but there is a lot of crud down there already!.
Also added some new tie down loops before I left. Just 5/8 eyes with long nuts welded to the frame. Also added some angle to the tire mount so it rides on the sidewall better.

Got her washed off and fixed a loose ground and moved the oil dipstick from behind the air intake.
Figured out the front hydro I think, will know later today.
-
So back on this a little yesterday and even after adding the rocker on the handle, front hydro is a no go.
I will do a little more research but I don't see the need for the setup they have. Basically a servo pulls/pushes the hydro valve. This goes through about 15ft of wire and a little control box and plugs. Doesn't seem to adjust anything, but lights up nice when I pull/plug the fuse.
-
Here is the inside and ALL that wiring is for the front hydro. I know the valve works as it opened when I used the panel rocker. Repairing the stock system seems futel as it probably involves parts and a labor if I find the problem.
So basically it has 2 rockers, one on the panel for cont. flow and a momentary on the handle for use with claws and such.
I am thinking I could replace their over thought system with a solenoid setup. The valve needs to travel about 1/2in in/out to work. No real partial flow needed. It already has an arm on it for their solenoid and a solid mount pretty close.
So if I can find a HD double throw solenoid that has about 1in travel and returns to center I think that would work.
Either that or replace the Hydro valve with one that has flow solenoids.
What do you guys think, options?
-
I’d probably spend some more time with a multi meter and see if you can find the schematics to isolate the issue. It was probably engineered that way for a reason and your caveman simple approach may have unforeseen consequences. JMHO

-
I have the schematics and have been working on it but it does not show the front hydro setup. There are 8 wires going to the solenoid.
I have followed programing for the mixer, but it does nothing. If the solenoid or mixer is bad, just their cost is nuts.
Being 22 years old it is hard to find info on it.
-
Here is a pic of just the valve, its the first one.
Would seem I could run it with a cable and springs to return to center. Would get me by anyway.
-
I may have missed it.....but why not just take it to somebody who is certified to work on it and have it fixed right the first time and be reliable than spending all of your valuable time trying to bypass stuff?
-
I fall into nates mind set often enough. Let experts do expert crap

Agreed with last two comments. As Tex would say sometimes you just need to be the guy who writes the check.

-
I would love to have it work correct, will do some more research on that.
Now a little more digging and I pulled the servo motor off. The valve only moves about 1/2 each way, end of arm about 1in. It is spring loaded pretty well and returns to center easily.
Without hacking things up until I figure this out it could be as simple as a rod run forward to the cab area. It would come out right about where the throttle is and right joy stick. Connect a small handle to it or pivot. This may work so I can get it back on the job.
The more I read about these the better I would have liked T handle controls. The foot controls can be a pain getting in/out. I can live with it though now. May look for some used parts for that later.
-
So I hooked the claws back on and the hydro works fine by hand. The stock elec would be great, but not a must.
Another option is adding a linear solenoid to use the switches on the tractor as they are. (looking at solenoids now)
Other option is just a rod that would come out near the right hand lever down by the throttle. (Easiest)
If I used a cable, I could run it up the control handle near the grip.
-
Attach it to a twist throttle on a motorcycle. Twist you wrist and let go for open?

Thats an idea, need a center though.
-
Twist throttle would have a return to center. But maybe all of that is off of the carb

Kinda like that idea, but need 2 inches travel. Is there a setup that runs in the bar?
Maybe an atv throttle?
-
So here is a search for all you guys. Looking for a 12v solenoid, push/pull with a 1in stroke. Probably needs about 20lb force, but I will measure.
I am having no luck, but it has to be out there.
-
Is this what you are looking for?

The very same I found. But even though it is push/pull, it only does 1 way, so I would need 2.
Not that it is out of the realm, but would like to do it with 1.
-
Measured at 10lbs, very smooth and centers well.
-
Setting it up for quick use today but I have another thought on how to make this work. Why not a little air ram setup?
Use a 12v pump/tank and two 12v air solenoids. 100psi with a 2-3 inch ram should do it. Same switches and mounts could be used too.
Just a quick search and I found this;
-
Long story short I needed a way to get this front hydro working. Brought DUG home to do some work so easier to work on(am I repeating myself?)
Pricing out the stock parts that I am not sure if they work was around $800. This could be the future, or air, but here is the route now.
Decided to go mechanical. Seemed easy, run a rod from the hydr valve to the cab and be done. First I removed all the stock parts to clear up the area.
-
Welded a bolt to the 3/8 rod end for the stock heim (that is the arm for it in the upper right picture hanging down.
Drilled a couple holes and the rod was in the cab. Even missed all the other parts in the way. Figured an end on it and done. Well no go. Was to low to work. It worked but down where it was it could not be moved with normal arms and joints, just to low.
-
So that come out. Needed to be higher for sure, but how. Looking at the arm on the valve I figured I could turn it over or make a new arm, but the pin/slot locations were a little tight to knock one out fast. But adding an arm to the top of the stock arm should work.
I check for cab clearance, made the arm about the same length, laid it over to clear the cab and it looked OK. Was a little harder to move when positioned below so I thought another arm up top would do the trick.
Using the same rod/heim I was able to run it almost straight into the cab, next to the right joystick. Seemed good but how to move it from up top or close to it. So using bolts for the throttle I mounted a small piece of angle and put a bend in the rod. I used a 16in piece of 1x1/8 bar and drilled a pivot and hole for the rod. The angle held the rod into the bar, but I still drilled it for a cotter pin. Got a shouldered bolt for the pivot and spaced it all with washers.
Seemed to work OK and I bent over the bar just below the grip so it could be found easy. Tore it down, gave it a coat of black and bolted in. Works pretty good with just a little slop. Returns to center and I have enough reach to get to and the longer gives me the leverage it needed.
-
And the cab opens and closes without any interference.

That is sweet Dave, now I feel better,,,,,,,,,
It worked great. Handle seems just about right and pull to close, etc.
In fact the rosemary out front lasted about 10 minutes. Spent more time cleaning up than tearing it up.

Onto the next "mod". Love the claw but it bites about 6 inches to the rear of the blade. I noticed I had to really dig to get what I wanted to grab on my rosemary and the neighbors pile.
Going to do a simple pie cut and move the pinch closer to the blade edge, say 1-2 inches. Made up a template, figured my pie size and time for the plasma,,,,
-
Then a little trimming, heating and a tac weld.
-
Couple of good beads which the Miller 211 handled easy since the metal is crap and just doing 1/4in per pass.
Little cleanup and paint, came out just right. Decided no side plates needed, this works on compression. See how it works if I need to add teeth, but I don't really think so.
-
The I added some ply to the trailer. Sliding around when loading and such. Comes right out for dumping, just need a tab on the rear piece so it says, others have the hooks.
Claw needs a step too. Top plate was maybe 3in and smooth. Had this piece of steel step, made a little brace and done. Posted a better pic!
-
Also finally got the new seat installed. Feels much better and hopefully won't show the dirt as much.
-
Didn't get much use out of it with working on the road, http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=3981.new#new
Basically fixed the hanging hoses after a test, worked great!

Dang, 3 years since I posted on the thread.
Repairing the tilt ram my neigbor popped last year after the "flood". Rear right tire still goes done, but holds a seal so not and issue at all yet. Starts like a champ too.
Ram is apart, cleaned up and just 2 seals to go. Damage was obvious. Couple of burrs on the piston, cleaned it and the rod with 1000 sand paper. (lathes are nice)
38mm nut was a chore, cap was easy (set screw) Should finish it up tomorrow.
