And I though the key word "dinner" was what attracted you to the thread....

Hey chicken tenders are fine dining!

For us old guys and non-techies, he's talking about that Bobby, but more simply put, when the SHTF arrives, he's got really cool paper weights and lots of cable to make snares with!  :o

Oh well now I get it.

Basically creating my own Pandora and Netflix Bobby, on my own server. Solvin first world problems LoL

You should've said that in the first place! Remember K.I.G.S.
So, Bobby...being the calculating trained warrior NCO that you are.  Take the appropriate action, Execute!
your standard grunt level CQB is just putting rounds and rounds on scary stuff till it stops scaring you!

A few of my favorite IT acronyms...

PICNIC - Problem In Chair Not In Computer
PEBKAC - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair
and of course... an ID10T error (Pronounced ID-Ten-T). Most folks probably wouldn't know what you're talking about if you say it around them...but write it down and it all makes sense ;D

Pretty much describes much of my day to a tee.

Hey Kyle,
What NAS platform/model are you running your PLEX server on? Thinking I'd like to set something like this up.

You can reply here for everyone's knowledge or PM me... Or we can start a thread in the Tech/Electronics category (though i'm not sure this fits the 'survival' theme of this website) ;)

Currently I have an old laptop running FreeNAS 9 and external HD's, but I'm going to upgrade in the new house. Runing Linux is kind of a pain since I don't use it all the time, so next unit will be Windows based if it's a PC platform.

Can't decide if I want to buy a small form factor PC and use external drives, build a tower with multiple internal drives, or buy a Western Digital My Cloud EX2 dedicated NAS unit and be done with it

I hear ya on the Linux aspect. If you don't use it every day you forget the commands.

I'm looking at Synology's NAS products right now, seem to be nice units. Kinda spendy for not including any drives though. The RAID capabilities (Software-based, I'm sure) are important to me so if I have a drive die I don't lose all my data, as is the ability to back it up to another unit or out to the cloud.

I have a tower PC with two 1TB drives in a RAID1 and an SSD for the OS, but it has a quad core proc and 8GB RAM, would be a pretty big power hog just for a media server. (Used it as a virtualization server, but could never really do much with only 8GB ram) :(

Yeah the WD does RAID, but I prob won't use it. I'm just going to run automated backups to multiple drives. Meh who knows I might change my mind on that... Maybe I'll just go full-on impulsive and go 8TB in RAID hahaha

The My Cloud is Linux based too, but the web interface is suuuuper slick. All GUI. You can permission folders, create share easily, even set up automated sweep and scrape of FTP I think I read.

Yeah sounds like your tower may be a bit of a pig for a file server, but you what you could do is turn it into a dual purpose HTPC/NAS since you got the processing power. But if you're going the plea route, just easier to run a Roku on the network from a NAS.

My idea is my NAS will be adjacent to my safe, with the external SSD inside the safe for replication of files and photos from the media server, connected via USB. Movies and music don't necessarily need to be replicated since they're replaceable

Me too brother... Grillin central. Going to have a gas fire pit on the patio, and then a wood burning pit out on the back of the property.

Patio will be approx 800 sq ft. Will have can lights and flush mount speakers in the ceiling. Will have my Traeger, Gas Grill, and hopefully a new Charcoal kettle on the one end by the garage. Hot tub will be on the other end (someday... but we're pre-wiring now).

All this^^^! And DO the hottub! Especially with your scenery. Nothing better than a beverage in the hottub at the end of a long day. And your wife will love it too.

Yeah I was super excited when they told me that... We have 320 to the house, so I was assuming 200 at the house and 120 at the shop, but since everything big is Nat Gas, I get a little extra POWA to the shop  ;D ;D ;D

Looking great Kyle. The HardiPlank is good stuff. Tough as nails, heavy as all heck, and hard on the tools, but you're not doing it :).

Diggin the 200A to the shop, that will be handy, maybe even overkill, but will be good to have options.

we do love our overhangs here. looking really good their Kyle. I like the hardy plank, but I'm not a fan of cleaning it! 11 years old now and I've pressure washed the north face 3 times since moving in. Be ye warned!. 200a to the garage... I smell welding equipment, compressors, and the like.

Yeah, i'd rather pressure wash than having to re-side from disintegrating LP!!

Not sure if you noticed from the pictures, but when hardi first came out installers would caulk the butt joints... and that after a couple years the caulk just turned to rubbish. Now they're flashing the joints instead of caulking. You can see three of them in the 2nd pic below, right above the power meter.

Yes, wanted lots of juice to the shop... compressor, welder, and also a 50a plug for the RV so we can use it as overflow for guests and such. Ultimately will run a small electric water heater, and potentially a "shop only" washer and dryer for filthy outside stuff wifey doesn't want inside.

It's nice to see houses from other parts of the country that actually have charactor. Out here it's just mostly the stucco thing, and I find myself despising it more and more as i get older.

Beautiful place kyle.

Can you get a close up of the flashing?  is it like a little "H" piece?  Both my houses are hardi and they are caulked.

I thought about your dinner with your wife when I saw the rocked dining room. Great memories

They're basically like rubber flaps that have sticky backing. I've seen sheet metal used too, but not on our place

And yes that was/is a great memory, and a story that will be told for a long time ;)

OK I get it.  Even better.  The water that gets through the crack just rolls down on top of the next plank and they are wide enough to handle wind driven water.  Neat idea!

Kyle, Looking great!  Family room fireplace/TV/cabinets (I'm assuming) looks like mine. I built all that earlier this year. Just need a bigger TV now... That's a 46", need a 60-70".

Nov 15... that's my b-day ;)

Those built ins are nice man!

We'll have the mantle and then the TV above it. Built-ins had to get cut from the budget but our cabinet builders are right up the road so we'll have em make them for us in a year or two.

We'll have the 50" Panny above the fireplace.... Wifey wants minimal A/V downstairs, so just the TV and a Klipsch sound bar and wireless sub.

Upstairs in the man cave is a different story. In the man cave, I write the rules LOL.

Hey Kyle, what are you putting in for in-ceiling speakers? Did you build boxes for them so the sound doesn't resonate through the floor joist cavity above?

I didn't, mainly because our master bedroom is right above, and if there's a party goin' on downstairs i'm not likely to be sleepin'!

I went with the 8" Klipsch speakers and brackets. (R-1800-C and IK800C)

Here's a couple pics of the install, speakers aren't in yet but the brackets are.

Big holes are the speakers, smaller holes are can lights.

Meh, while we're at it here's a couple more updates... all cabinets are in, almost all counters in, electrical finish work is 95% done, tile and wood floors are done, working on tile shower now. Trim and doors should start soon, and septic is getting dug today.

Darn, now I have another in-ceiling speaker to consider for my rear surrounds...

Been looking at Monoprice and HTD. Both seem to get really good reviews, with HTD probably being the better quality (and about 2x the $). Klipsch is a good brand, and the price point falls right in the middle of these two.

I've always had good look with Klipsch gear... I also looked at the monoprice (all my cabling and wire is from there), but when i saw that i could afford Klipsch i didn't think twice... everything else in the house is Klipsch.
