NWMT Cabin
« on: October 20, 2022, 02:04:49 PM »
Starting an ongoing thread on our last home (hopefully) we purchased nine days ago. Just had internet hooked up this morning so I can now get back to making H jokes directed at Ken and giving the boss more headaches. I’ll post some pics shortly.

The low down is a legit log cabin built by meadowlark homes out of libby, MT (Amish family originally from Lagrange, IN my old stomping grounds). It’s just shy of 1600 sq ft, 2 bed, 2 bath, 2 story home on 3.66 acres in the middle of the woods in NW MT literally on the way to no where surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers. Water is in abundance along with all sorts of critters.

Currently on the property is a 2 car detached garage 24’ x 26’ with a potentially unfinished living space above that has water and sewer run to it already. Place came with a 8’ x 10’ wood shed which I’m doubling in length at the moment. New shop on property will go up next spring or summer and trying to get a 12’ x 20’ addition off back side of garage put up before the deep freeze sets in. As far as that goes for MT it doesn’t get that cold here due to lower elevation.

Thanks, not where I’m at. They are mostly down by the river in this area.

Thanks guys, Charles we will have the spare bedroom setup. Long term plan is to finish area above garage but I’ll most likely winterize it yearly so short 3 seasons place to crash.

This is west of our cabin and we’re walking east in the evening. Our driveway is in middle of pic top to bottom on the right.

Little pre-commie (havanese) dogs approve. Hard to tell they’re not commies though as they always want me to share whatever I have, usually food.

Thanks guys, Ken you’re lucky I didn’t post a selfie! Lol

Bob, we were very lucky I believe. We prayed over this for months. Although at times it was definitely a struggle the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

We had three options, find a home we could make our own that was in good shape (this was only one in the area not on a golf course). Buy land, however anything decent and reasonably priced was picked up earlier this year and now slim pickings in addition to its the fall and we need a place to survive the winter up here. Third option was buy a place with good bones but a gut job. With unknown of pricing and time of year we felt this was the right call.

I have t mentioned this but it would appear we have a great husband and wife neighbor. He’s originally from Alberta, lived in Whitefish and then Vegas most of his life and is a retired lineman. He spent 2 years in Israel as a kid so has triple citizenship. Moved here for similar reasons and we see eye to eye on just about everything thus far. His wife is a nurse where my wife works. Haven’t met her yet as she’s been in Vegas helping a daughter with new grand child.

Higher elevations got some snow two evenings ago.

Ordered roof tin and finished up framework on wood shed. I’ll eventually connect the two for storage in between. When I get back from Colorado I’m going to buy the side slats and get them stained. Need my propane salamander from the Colorado shop.

Queue the second guessing of all your construction decisions….

You could connect it now and move the end slats from the right side of the current structure to the right of the new structure.

Do you have a local hardware store like we do in Clark Fork? They have literally anything a person might need. Lumber, chainsaws, plumbing, etc etc.
... although I don't remember seeing ammo, nor the tools required to use it.

We’re more refined up here Ken. We have hardware at the hardware stores and then we have guns, ammo, fishin gear and booze at another store. Rightly named Booze n Bait and for being a town of 800 it’s worth stopping by and seeing their inventory. It’s impressive I’d say.

Well, I’ve been told there is a bear every square mile up here and as many big cats. The only thing my neighbor hasn’t seen on our property is a bear, yet.

About a mile up the road here a couple months back a guy had 7 mountain lions in his back yard. That made the paper even, I think 7 constitutes a pride maybe?

Unfortunately not that blm…..

Picked up the steel roof panels yesterday morning and first chance to install was today. Of course it decided to give us our first snow last night. So I scraped snow off top of stringers and put up the panels. Looks like I calculated correctly and have two left to cover the gap between them when I get to it.

I have 2 cords of split seasoned firewood coming this week. So I wanted to get a roof up. I’m going to grab the side boards 1x6 and stain it like the other one. They do not have 1x6 treated up here and cedar 1x6 are out of stock due to stupid prices no one wanted to pay. I brought my propane salamander up this trip so I’ll stain those boards inside my 2 car garage. In the meantime I think my little 5x8 trailer is going to hold the wood with a tarp over it until the side boards go up on new wood shed addition.

Went and picked up 1x6’s this morning then hung them in 20 degree weather. At least it’s done for now.

I was able to track down the stain. Says it needs 24 hours of 50 degree plus temps. That will come next spring. It should apply better to wood that isn’t this fresh anyhow. Yes I’m aware wood spacing is a little off in a couple spots, it’s a wood shed and I was after less cuts (3 total on the side boards).

Shawn, you must have a small firebox in your stove if the wood needs to be split so small.

Shawn, you must have a small firebox in your stove if the wood needs to be split so small.

It’s pretty small, the cabin is just shy of 1600 sq ft. The stove is a Kuma and I’m not overly impressed, I had a quad fire in my 3500 sq ft farm house in Indiana and it was a beast. Going to run it this year and see how it goes, it may get relegated to shop back up heat next year. We will see…

I think a jotul is probably the best bet for this small cabin. Down side is I’ll be splitting a lot still. I’ll have log splitter here by next year though.

We picked up a County Line log splitter from Tractor Supply two years ago. Very well built and good price point. Don’t even have a wood stove so the neighbors are happy. Given away around six cord of mixed fir, Madrone, and maple so far. Have about a cord for an fire down by the water on a nice summer evening watching the sunset.

Nice  :likebutton:

I was building a huge splitter for the 3 pt of my tractor back in Indiana 8 years ago before moving to Colorado. Mounted cylinder on beam and built the 4 way splitting head then decided to move. It’s in my shop in Colorado because I had so much in it I couldn’t fathom selling it. I’m going to make it a towable unit that will stand horizontal or vertical. I even have a Honda engine for it. Just need to put it together.
