Thinking of a tube bender
« on: June 09, 2016, 01:25:12 AM »
Been thinking of this for many a project. These things can get pricey, then you get the dies, OMG. I don't see needing over 1.75 (2 in od)

Sure I don't need to bend every size, but here are couple I found;

There is the DIY like from gottrikes, then you buy dies. I do like this one being vertical.

Basics from places like Protools, but look a little light duty.

Found a couple both at summit and jegs, but cheap or pricey with everything.

CL has em now and then, but people still pricey for anything worth while.

I found this on Ebay, looks to be a copy of the JD and it comes with dies. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291771839211?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I think this could be used vertical too and maybe even mounted to a receiver.

I think Don has the JD model and have seen some of his work with it.

So comments?

We got one from harbor freight. Thought we would use it but we don't. I actually forgot we had it until I seen this.

I looked into them a couple years ago.  There are a few out there similar to JD but a little cheaper priced and cheaper built.  None of the models I found could get a tight enough radius for what I needed though.  Like you eluded to though, you will spend just as much if not more on dies than the initial cost of the bender.

I had also found some people  who built there own bender and purchased dies for it.   I never looked into that option much.  Currently I just send a print out and have somebody else bent them.  It's not to horribly expensive and I can have them cope the ends perfectly for me so I don't have to screw around with getting a perfect fit.

Must be something in the air because I was also considering this.

My snap-on guy has one that he used to make a roll cage for a sandrail. If he could make one work, anyone could.

That's what I own JR.

Excellent unit. And when bending the 2" tube, it is a massive workout, as in good.

I'd say with making a 90 degree bend and a short extension on the handle it is like doing a set of 6 225 lb bench presses. Bend say 4-6 of those and you're pumped!

I bought the SWAG air over hydraulic unit for mine and before the next pipe bendin' session, I'm going to install it along with a new stand with casters. If you plan on hand bending which I highly recommend, it needs to be securely bolted into the planet or you're going to need additional surgery and physical therapy

Oh yes, it will get an air ram and I have looked at the swag items but think I can do better.

I can see many a bumper part, racks, storage in Spartan, cross members, skid plate supports,,,,,,,,,go cart for the kids.

I have a hossfeld for bending all things steel. Most of the dies I acquired here or there over the years. The majority of the tube die sets came from American bender.........

Keep in mind JR that the dies cost as much as the bender in many cases

Yes, I saw the prices on the dies. Been looking on CL for a little while now.

Dies rarely and a lot of old stuff (not bad) but nothing at I call a fair price.

Finally did. A lot in my area too with the Rubicon and all the shops here.

Still up in the air on what. Other brand, degree of bends. I can see smaller tube needing a 180 for some items and just a 90 for larger tube.

JR, I bend 2" .120 wall tube, and sometimes 1.75" pipe. Buy only tube would be my recommendation and bend either 2" tube for your structural stuff, or 1" pipe for your roof racks, light guards, or hillbilly smackers.

I was thinking about the same. For those sizes I might buy brand name so I get 180* bends which the listed one doesn't have.

I did just pick this up for under $150 with a coupon.

Works with 3/8 to 1in and even does some square. This will be nice for smaller things.

Found a Protool 105 for 225 shipped. No handle, dies or stand. I was looking at the Woodward but it seems to be a knockoff and a few bad reviews.

No for dies. Thinking 1.25 and 1.5 to start off. I also understand many of the dies from JD/JMR with work with the protool, but I want to get it first.

Plan is to mount it on a engine stand for mobility and pulling down to bend. Most likely will add hydro.

Funny you say that JR, there is a nice new cummins Dodge running around & I swear he used 5" for bed rails & a headache rack. Painted auto quality so it looks nice in that regard but it's slightly gaudy......

Tube, I've ran into this guy couple times think he is oil & nat gas. Guessing the bends were the bought corners the use & weld in place. Tube was wider than top of bed rail, slightly obnoxious I thought. Other than that the truck is very sharp, high dollar custom bumpers painted to match the secondary trim color of a maroon and tan trimmed dodge.

Ok, well send it to me so I can test it. :)

...then I'll pass it over to Cali so JR can destroy...uh I mean.....use it.

Actually, my snap-on dealer had the bender and sold it to a guy that hasn't used it. That's how I may end up with it. If that works out, I'll try to get mr snappy to sell me the notcher (same brand) that he has no use for now.

I saw that and it looks nice. Just to much for what I will do (storage) and price.

I did see this and thought it was nice for a starter, but a $300 notcher? The HF will do for now.

The 105 has bushings in the main pivot to keep the plates apart.

I think the 1in and 1.5in will be a good start. What do you think, 180 on both or just for the 1in?

Got my little bender in, pretty well made but a little rough in the dies. It will give me up to 180 on .750.

I always bumped up to 1.75" for the ability to do cages and such. This way you would only stock 1.75" versus the 1.5 & 1.75 if you wanted cage protection etc. Judt a thought......

Found this NIB on Pirate for $170 and it was local enough to pickup.

1.75x6

Sure it is a 90, but this size and 2 inch I can't see doing 180's much.

Talk about ups and downs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The bender seemed to be taking quite a while to get her from Florida. I said send cheap so I waited. 9 days later this HUGE box shows up that looked like it had been everywhere and was covered with USPS tape. Top of the box said damaged in transit, repacked in TN and sorry.

Open the box and find a huge bag of shredded paper on top of 1 piece of the bender and some pins.

SO now the fun is on, but the seller is working on it and is ticked off too.

Unless you have a nice foam filler the key to that is strapping tape & a lot of it, i see none on the outside. The parts should have been laid together tight then bound with cardboard and strapping tape then put into the box (essentially a box in a box) & filler placed in the outer box to keep inner one from slamming around. Then add strapping tape to outer box exterior. Yeah it would have probably cost him $10 in tape but it would have all arrived. Zip lock bags with bolts in them & taped tight is a good idea too

I remember the winch I sent. Foam and cardboard all around it, no way for it to move much. Much less make a hole.

Looks like the bolts were bagged. I think the 5 plates were all together and the centers slid, the rest is history.

Well, this is getting interesting now. He did not insure it for its value. I did use paypal so I have until the end of the week to file a claim.

Emailed him today after he said he was going to refund it and it came back as not a good email address now.

Glad it was with Paypal as it doesn't look good.

JR - time for you to "get bent" -ing some pipes!  See how well things work out- awesome deal!  Now you just gotta sink some deep mounts into some concrete to mount your base.  :)

Neg, castors if it has hydraulics.....

Searched and found a JD2 Model 3 with stand, handle, scale and a NIB HF hyd over.

Came with a 1.75in, 180* Die.

Just $320  and I get to sell the Protool 105 Die.

That's the one I own!

Have had it for about 15 years

Only failure I ever had with it was a tweaked back from pulling like a mule while standing on a grease spot

Hydraulics is a better option
