Firearms / Re: Sig P226 vs Glock 17
« on: December 24, 2014, 09:34:51 PM »
Bobby knows what he is talking about!

I own a M&P9C, the M&P in 9mm compact. It is my wife's CC gun. It comes with three back straps, she uses the little one, me the larger one. I found that she limp wristed that gun when it was new, but during one deployment which for me was usually somewhere around 5 months, during that time she fired probably nearly 1400 rounds.

The gun was running fine with her at the helm when we did a range day when I got back and discovered she shot up all my good HP ammo and left the worthless 115gr ball stuff intact!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that grip is important. My youngest daughter who stands 5'8" and is strong was with us that day at the range somehow she changed her grip and the slide caught her thumb nail and nearly tore it off...as in folded it all the way back!

Man it was ugly...as in I was looking at that and saying to myself, "Seriously???"

I personally like the M&P but it is little more than a glock copycat. especially when comparing it to a gen 4 G-gun.

I've been in several shooter groups deployed in the sandboxes. Except when we were on some silly gov't contract which specified the M9, we always carried the G-19 and one time the G21. After that little foray, I ordered one online from Kabul and had it waiting for me when I came back stateside. Just a big club of a gun.

I'm just a big G-19, G23, G30 fan. I switch them out for my CC guns except that the G30 is about as concealable as a football. If I had to pick a single gun it would be the G23 hands down, then the G19, followed by whatever came out of the drawer next!

Score one for the grunts.  ;D

Does/did the young lady use the thumbs parallel and aligned to the slide or the thumb high method?

Problem is that where I live, if a pistol barrel is less than or equal to 4.125", I basically can't own it. And even to own any pistol with a longer barrel I still need a restricted license, PLUS an authorization to transport for each pistol, and must belong to a restricted-approved range, and I can only transport it from my residence to the range and back. Not allowed shooting in the woods, or in a gravel pit or where ever else. No concealed or open carry allowed etc.

So considering the options you guys suggested, I'm pretty much limited to the Glock 17 size (ie. standard size) or the competition pistols. I could get a G19 or G23 or something like that, as long as it had a longer barrel put on it, but then, I might as well get the G17 at that point eh? Unless there's a benefit to having a G19 with a 4.5 inch barrel ?

Wouldn't having a threaded barrel on a G19 put you just over the legally required length?  The newer Gen4s have the option to have a threaded barrel and that sticks out past the slide so it MIGHT put you where you need to be. But if not, the 17 is always nice.

Haha well I used to be a young ossifer, 11 years ago!! No longer in the service now though. The purpose of the pistol would be mostly for target shooting, and to become proficient in the use of a pistol. Your point about parts availability is a good one, and may be the deciding factor. I do have a local glock dealer, but nothing local for Sig (all Sig stuff would have to be mail ordered). I mostly looked into Sig because I had used one before and they do have a reputation for high quality. I do hear great things about the Glocks as well though! Would ultimately like to get into competition shooting, likely in the production handgun type class or something like that.

Based on availability of parts and support (Glock) or lack there of (SIG), I'd go with the Glock. Mags are cheap and plentiful, and they make it stupid simple to work on them, and they are reliable. But for competition, I'd look into the 34/35 models. They are their competition models, so they should be a bit more suited towards competition shooting. Don't get me wrong, a 17 with someone who knows their pistol will definitely hold their own.

Hi all, still doing some research for my first pistol purchase. I've had a little bit of training using the 226 when I did basic officer training with the Navy, and have fired a couple other semi-auto pistols at ranges. I've never personally fired the Glock (any Glock for that matter). For anyone that has used both, how does the Glock 17 compare to the Sig? Does the Glock trigger take some getting used to? I loved to shoot the Sig, and found it was comfortable. Just looking for some opinions, reviews etc. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

Check to see if there are people you work with that will ,based on the law of averages, own one or both of those pistols. Offer to provide the 9mm and most people will happily agree to let you test fire.

I fired both at a range up by me. My opinions, from what I can remember...

226
Decent trigger
Top heavy
Grip was ok,the angle is based on the 1911 angle, which I love, just didn't feel right on a 226. The newer versions have a re-designed grip. Might have replaceable backstraps.
Parts aren't as plentiful, at least that I know of, your AO might be different.

17
Good trigger, audible reset
Balanced rather well
Grip is based on the Luger angle, so it points high for some people, low for others.. Personal variances always happen.
Replaceable backstraps in the newer Gen4s. They make the grip thicker (front to back) and add a beavertail as some people have received wicked slide bite.

On the topic of parts/upgrades, there are infinitely more parts out there for Glocks than SIGs. Just the nature of the beast I suppose. So always keep that in the back of your head.

What does this young (I'm assuming) Naval ossifer wish to do with said pistols will also help determine which is better suited for you.

Also, just to add variety to your life, I'm going to suggest you take a look at the M&P series pistols. They have great ergonomics, and are very comfortable to shoot.

2655
Don't even bother, guys. Best to just stand back and observe.

In silence...

But Duane, that's not how the DOTs conduct the daily business..  ;D

2656
Bobby, you mean get me a 3.0L eco diesel dodge...

She's not a truck girl

She's a girly girl, pretty much complete polar opposite of me.

Nope she does not understand all of that. She knows big expensive things, a part of her DNA I wish I could rearrange. Things that sound like Cadillac, Mercedes, Acura, BMW, things like that. Caddy is on the low end btw...

I suggested she purchase her own car insurance today and that did not go very well for me. Right now I think I'll just drag an extra blanket over me in this dog house and wait out the storm going on in the house!

Ok, you give HH6 the VDub you currently drive, you buy yourself an EcoDiesel, as a DD and you'll both be happy!

As for warmth, hold a couple tools and sunglasses, let red dog come in and cuddle, sled dog as well. You should be plenty warm then.

2657
Get her one of the new Ram 1500s with the 3.0 EcoDiesel, then liberally apply sparks and extra metal. 710 mi range, pretty good mileage for a truck, and the Crew Cabs have enough room.

He's right Bobby. Believe it or not, even new rotors are warped straight out of the box (a couple thousandths all the way to .020"). They shouldn't be stacked on top of each other during shipping, but they are, and that alone is enough to warp them to some degree.

Well then XJ is gonna have to cooperate and help me eliminate all the vibs/squeaks/groans/grinds and other miscellaneous noises... like that'll ever happen!

Build Threads / Re: 1998 Jeep XJ

Its hard to eyeball a rotor and know if its warped or not.  Maybe impossible.

I know a lot of guys skip having the rotors turned / resurfaced when replacing pads but it is something you really want to do, especially if a warped rotor is suspect.

Well I might just replace the rotors, a lot of places around here don't want to turn or re-surface them. We'll see what the outcome shall be.

That sounds like a warped brake rotor.

Replaced the front pads and the rotors didn't seem warped. I'm going to check them again, and probably check the wheel bearings. Just checking everything at this time I suppose.

You can do the U-joints yourself. CV's not so sure...most times one just purchases a new shaft

Yep, just have to rebuild the funds before I start buying new U-joints.

RATS, too late to enjoy the Darwinian lesson for the day; subject removed the video

Guy was simulating getting shot at in his truck. He got out of the drivers seat, left the door open, opened the rear door, left it open, opened the rear passenger door, hung under it and fired a couple shots, then dropped his pistol, then rolled out of the truck, which caused him to drop his extra mag, then fired from the prone under the open door.

Check your u-joints, wheel bearings and the output shaft from the transfer case.  Is the vibration continuous at all speeds?

That's on the agenda for next weekend. It is continuous, but like I said its not a harsh shake. Like a cylindrical grind that hits only on one spot of a rotating mass.

I'm sure the guys who aligned it would have noticed if the wheel bearings were questionable...

They didn't say anything, but then again, I left my Jeep at the dealership and had to walk 1.7 miles to work. The guy who dropped it off didn't know anything.

That thing has a CV joint (Junk) Known weak point. Check that as well
Makes more of a clicking sound when defective

I was looking into replacing all the CVs/U joints. Just to have piece of mind. Possibly after I replace the rocker panels.

I have to say, i am definitely not a fan of the air force camo pattern.  as far as the exhaust paint job, have you thought about a shaker can of auto engine/exhaust paint?  i think they are rated to something like 1200deg.  something like this http://www.eastwood.com/por-15-hi-temp-aerosol-flat-black-44118.html

I've used this and I like it.

bad vibes???

Not too bad, just more of a "feel in the shifter/pedals/seat" and can hear it if you pay attention. Its not a "shake your fillings out", type thing. That makes it more annoying to me.

At first, I thought maybe the tires needed balancing, but nope. I'll find it, just going to take time.

So last Thursday XJ got a new alternator. And this morning the tires were rotated, balanced and aligned.

On that topic, since when does it take 2 HOURS!! to do a rotate, balance and align... Not once have I ever had it go that long.

Now, I have to track down this vibration.. More to come on that.

The struggle is VERY real!

No haven't been going to the gym. Correction, I did 2x since my last update. Been stupid busy at work. People call in/whatever the case may be, and I go in early, or stay late. But, I also found out I start a new shift 2Jan, so I'll have beaucoup time to workout after I leave work, which is nice. Love it when work schedules mesh with workout schedules.

I don't remember posting an app, I think that was someone else.
I use Hornady Ballistic calculator to get it close. http://www.hornady.com/
After that, I log all of the elevation, windage, temps, etc. that I come up with at the range, reenter it in their system, and vola, a printable table that gets taped to the gun.

I bet it would be every infantryman's dream gun if it ever hit the Armee or Marines

I prefer the M14, but I'll give everything a fair shake.

I built a 7.62 gas system ar off the same upper and lower as the Ruger 7.62 (blanks come from same shop as ruger gets them) It was definitely a headache (ordered wrong parts several times) and the action was pretty tight when I finished the build. I have ran several mags thru it at different times with white lithium grease (boy is that messy) trying to heat it up and break the action in. It is getting better but thinking the system may be over gassed slightly so looking into an adjustable gas block now. Moral of the story the big price tag on the ruger looks inexpensive in comparison.........

I was going to ask you how that project ever turned out. In addition to the adjustable gas block there are heavier buffer springs, that'll help smooth things out. I'll try and find the ones I've seen and post them up for you. The gear site I gave you end up helping you out?

A shorty 16-18" barrel pushing all that power would work very nicely

Springfield...AR...Springfield...AR...Spri...

Try looking at the DPMS LR-308 AP4. The only "problem" with a 7.62/.308 chambered in a 16" barrel is the flash, and blast coming from the business end. 16" is barely allowing the powder to burn off, sorta like the short M44 carbines chambered in 54R. Everyone trash talks DPMS, but their SASS model was part of the SASS project the military had put on when they ended up with the M110. Their 7.62/.308s' are nice, and cheaper than alot of the others, which means more money to modify to your liking and the inevitable bullets, you will be shooting. Also get PMAGs, they make a 20-25 rd PMAG for the 308. They feed better and have less issues than the issued steel mag.

Here's a list of the AR 308s they have.
http://www.dpmsinc.com/308-WIN-762-NATO-16-18_ep_190-1.html

Here's the AP4 specifically:

Ok here's my more coherent response.

I agree with Chief that a 9mm pistol would be better than a rifle. A 12 ga would be better than a pistol and rifle in HD. However, I will now diverge from that path of cohesion we had, slightly. If you are set on a 9mm AR then get one, some will take the 30 or 32 rd 9mm mags. But, also look into a 9mm pistol that can use the same mags...

See where I'm going with this. Same ammo, same mags, less confusion in the dark, and less requirement to grab different ammo for different calibers. IF you can swap mags between pistol and AR then, your wife will be set for whatever the situation dictates.

Technology is amazing

I wonder when someone will come up with a marriage fixer program. Ya know you wake up in the morning and realize, you are still a man! OH NO, if you're married, that means 1. You are wrong, 2. You are in trouble, and 3. You have no clue as to why!

Get on the app. type in, "I said she really filled out that sweater"

Adding in the male thought column:

"I meant her very female shape made for some nice curves"

Then in her reaction to what you said/did/dod not do, block you type in:

But she took it to mean "You look fat"

App thinks awhile

Then suggests: Buy two tickets to Hawaii

Somehow you feel good about sliding your truck project to the right a few months to pay for all that Hawaii stuff!

Design that while you're recuperating from knee surgery, and you'd be a rich man. You'd have your own TV show, website, self-help column, and highly syndicated radio show extolling the virtues of the "Better Marriage by Don" app.

Have toyed with idea of forward grip, but not sure which way to go- Magpul wedge or more the broomstick style.

Really a great weapon!  ;)

Yea the grips can get hot if you make it put in work. Why not get both grips? You can probably find them online for cheaps, or in a sporting goods store. See which you like better, sell the other or keep it for when you want to be different.
