General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / Re: Pump
« on: October 25, 2014, 02:24:18 PM »
It would be easier to use the pump that's in the trans, officially known as the "hoot" method. Take the lines off of the radiator, put hoses on them, put one in an empty bucket (the pressure/outlet!...usually the lower one on the radiator), the other in a bucket full of new fluid. Not only does this way get all of the old fluid out, it gently flushes it.
Other option would be to just put the outlet in a bucket, start it, let run a couple-to-a-few seconds, add same amount of new thru dipstick, and repeat. First way is better so you won't run the pump dry.

No trans cooler on the XJ. I thought of that, but when I went to look before I started the process.. nothin. No tow package for me! lol

Bobby,
Some information needed here
But first, are you changing fluid on your transmission every 2 months? Or am I reading that wrong?
Now I am assuming you are looking at recirculating the fluid in the unit, or just pumping it free of as much fluid as you can, then recharging, or???

I've never seen anyone need to change trans fluid as much. For a vehicle in severe usage, I'd be pulling fluids and testing with Willie or similar knowledgeable lubrication specialist. But those fluid changes are only needed about every 20K

When I was crewing M-60A1/A3 tanks back in the day long before I sprouted wings, when I wore those big yellow stripes running all up and down like. back then we didn't change fluids that often in the transmissions. I want to say we were running SAE 10 wt motor oil and changing it annually, I think.

Just no need to increase the duty cycle, and I don't know anything that is more of a severe use and abuse on a transmission than pushing around 50-60 tons of main battle tank...

Every 2 weeks, I'm draining 3 qts from the trans pan, and re-filling, until I reach 12 qts (which is XJs total amount) from the trans/torque converter. I doubt the previous owner and his dad (who owns a lube shop) ever changed it, and I'm at 209,xxx. I don't want to pay a dealership or lube shop beaucoup money to flush out the old and add new. That's why I'm trying to work up an idea for a pump to do it all myself in one swoop instead of drain and fills until I cycle all the old out gradually.

In hindsight after, re-reading my post, I probably should I read and clarified, but I was typing as the ideas and thoughts popped into my head.

I'm currently doing a 2x a month drain and fill on the transmission on XJ to eventually swap out all 12-14 qts of fluid. While laying under it, and watching the fluid drain out, I had a thought of a pump. I don't want to take XJ to the dealership or a lube place to have them use their pump and charge way to much, so how hard would it be to make my own?

My thoughts were since you can order ,most if not all, fluids necessary for your vehicle in bulk, it should be relatively easy. Acquire a 5 gallon bucket, mark it off in quarts, drop in the tube which is hooked to a pump and it should push the new fluid in, while pushing the old crap out.

So what kind of pump and how big, where to source it? If I can get what I need, I will give this a shot. If it's a losing battle, and just as effective to do a drain and fill, repeat then filter swap, then that's what I'll do. Just an idea.

I would like to get my first pistol, and thought a Glock in 9mm would be a good choice. Was looking at the Glock 17, seems like a decent gun for the price. It's a little big, but that doesn't much matter as I can't carry it around or anything except to take it to the range, you know, being in Canada and all. :)

Shoot both the 17 and the 19, see which one you like the feel of better. You can always throw the 17 mags into the 19, if your mitts like the feel of the 19 better.

There's really only 1/2"  (if that) between the 2 in length and the grip is probably the same difference. And 2 more rounds in the mag for the 17. The newer Gen 4's have backstraps with a beavertail on them, helps keep the web by your thumb, from being a victim of slide bite...

Do you plan on mounting a "bayonet"? Most of that stuff is for the "tacticool" people. Plus, just adds more weight to the front end.

I like that it is a piston gun first, that it is a factory sorted out gun second that it comes from a US gun manufacturer that knows what they are doing, and it's just butt easy. Plunk down the cash and drive home with it, and start shooting Duane's deer targets to pieces!

Suppose those are good enough reasons.

You wrote your response on my post and thoroughly confused me, as I re-read it thinking I wrote more than I did. If you want a AR in 7.62, look into building your own, it'll probably be cheaper. The Ruger is nice, but you don't run suppressed, so you really don't NEED an adjustable gas block like that.

Would there be any shotgun specific training exercises I could on my own at my local range?

Once you decide on the barrel length (keep a long one for bird hunting or whatnot), and it's set up how YOU like it, and its comfortable to YOU. Acquire 500-1,000 rounds, similar to what you plan on using long term. Proceed to the range and start slow, check the pattern, then start checking the range, but keep it a reasonable distance, utilize all the rounds, doesn't have to be all at once, spread it out.

Acquire more rounds, then start shooting in different positions, weak and strong side, until it becomes second nature. It will take awhile to develop the muscle memory, but it'll come. If you need to change up the ergonomics, swap them, then repeat. Once you are comfortable with your performance, then increase the distance, increase the shell count. Once you feel comfortable, add positions where you have to stand, kneel, squat, prone etc..

You get my point right? It's more of a get to know your shotgun, and get comfortable behind it BEFORE, you start adding movements/obstacles/positions in the mix. Get the simple things down first, then move on.

Looking for a home defense type of shotgun. Thought about maybe an older wingmaster with a new barrel, or a 590A1, any one here prefer one over the other? Or would you recommend anything else? Don't wanna go broke on a Benelli M4, though they are pretty sexy!

Can't go wrong really with an Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. You can find used ones when people want something different. That means you can get them for a bit cheaper, and then upgrade them, it's not too hard to find parts for either. Cabela's or Gander Mountain (or any sporting goods store) will have a lot of parts to upgrade, from barrels, stocks, sights, chokes and etc.

My opinion, why spend beaucoup money for something, then not be able to afford the shells to fire it?

I'm getting that new 7.62 Ruger AR gun. I think I'll scope it with something good and use for a sporter gun with obvious other capabilities as well

I've heard good and bad on that. The safety and trigger being the most brought up.

IIRC, the trigger isn't the greatest, of course you can always swap that out. The safety, from what I read, there is a small bump or whatnot, at approx 75 degrees that makes a bit stiff/resistance to a smooth swing, but then again, you can swap out safeties.

The barrel also isn't free-floating. The adjustable gas block touches the barrel and the handguards.

But it does look nice. And you already have a 7.62 semi, why get a new one?

To answer your question, it's a standardization question. I know the AR platform. Better than anything else. Now when it comes to accuracy, I don't think any semi gun will match my springfield. But it's an old design, a wood guy with a way-long barrel. The Ar with a folder stock makes it a nice gun to use. And the 7.62 X 51 is just such a great cartridge...
But would I ever sell my M1A NM gun? No.
Don't be 800 meters away from that gun and get all warm and fuzzy safe feelin...!

High heat loss suspended too.

You can limit that, but using a space blanket to reflect the bodyheat back at you. Plus you lose more body heat by sleeping on the ground, unless you can be elevated approximately 2-3"

And the word "WOOT" makes me smile slightly. The redhead medic chick from Kentucky that I was dating for a bit used to say that constantly.

But really, put down a starting weight as in body weight, and periodically post up where you are...

Ok, I'll keep a weekly update for that. If, I can get Excel to start working, I'll make something graph-like, since pilots (or officers in general) like looking at pretty colors, numbers and doo dads, and making appreciative grunts and non-committal finger points and head nods, usually whilst sitting in a TOC with a cup of hot coffee.....

Honestly, I could do all of them if you guys want to see the track. I can start it all next week. The hardest part would be the calories intake vs burn off. But I'll do what I can.

Bobby's onto something...fire starting...

Another thing

If you know where an old dead pine tree is, take a hatchet and hack into the base
Smell the chunk you hacked out
Smells like turpentine, right?
Well that's because that's what it is
pine wood is saturated with it, in the stumps of trees.
While wondering aimlessly around the forests around Ft. Bragg. I'd use that stuff for the next fire
Carry in a plastic bag or it will irritate your skin...especially around your private junk...ya, don't ask the Warrant Officer how he knows that...

Fritos also work to start a fire, however, I'd just eat them. The grease/oil on them burns. A can of crisco with a wick (strips of t-shirt or sting) will burn for approximately 30 days. A crayon, if you strip the paper off, will burn for approximately 30 mins.

Now we MUST hear the story of the wandering Warrant officer...on the ground...at Ft.Bragg.

Have you thought about vacuum sealing some steel wool/dryer lint and adding a 9V battery in an old camera film canister? Press the steel wool onto both terminals on the battery, will light it. Dryer lint will catch easy as well.

Yes, I'm still at it people, and some mornings I wake up and I feel older than I am. However, I added a new twist to the routine, what is it you ask? Well allow me to tell you.... I play ball with my German Shepherd, Bear. I take him up to the football field and throw his ball, while constantly moving, then start running, he sprints, I sprint, he walks... well you get the pic.

I find it fun since, you aren't running a steady pace for long, you're constantly switching it up, and it tires him out, which is always a good thing.

Just putting this out there, but shouldn't we consider stocking up on behind the counter drugs as well as the over the counter stuff?

With my recent knee surgery, My progress was slow until I got some predesome in me. Days after that I am healing like crazy, albeit while breaking out (Side effect?)

I am now going to include a bottle of those gems in my "Tier-2" Medical kit. You know, not bug out size, but better stocked hide site sized. So one in America just can't go buy the stuff anywhere, but in anywhere else, planet earth you could. With the Canadian pharmacies advertising on my browser for Viagra every 15 minutes, would/couldn't/t they sell something useful just as easily?

I never considered them, but are meds like antibiotics, steroids, and pain killers available from them through the magic of the mail? Is that legal to purchase?

Can someone read in of some experience, sources, factual info or the like?

predesome = Prednisone

Treats inflammation (swelling), severe allergies, complications of chronic illnesses, and other medical problems. Also used to decrease some symptoms of cancer. This medicine is a steroid.

I was reading an article at work, and it was talking about how you can order Viagra or whatnot from those pharmacies, but you might not be getting legit products. They had side by side comparison between actual items and the knockoffs that are passed off as real. Now, I'm not saying all the pharmacies aren't keeping it real, but you never know, until it's too late.

The charger and batteries are always something to consider. Last batch of the batteries I got were 12 of the 123s for just $10. With the intellicharger you are pretty much set for any battery or power source.

I keep thinking about getting a charger but never actually do. I just buy 123s in big packs and move on

Nice lights JR. Randomly, as I will invariably acquire more lights, I'll keep this thread updated. If anyone else has lights they want to post up, review, call shenanigans or ask questions, it's all more than welcome.

Coincidentally, last night at work, my Streamlight ProTac's batteries started dying. Luckily, I have a little ziploc of more CR123s in the microwave stand. So for battery life, I'll give it an 8/10. I don't use it constantly, but the times I do use it, it all adds up. Even with the batteries dying, I was able to light up reflectors on trailers/railroad cars 100-300m away.

Going to build a trailer worthy of either truck

Seriously, grab a surplus military trailer, it'll use the same wheels/tires you have on D2/CMax (eventually). It's dirt level simple, cheap, easy to work on, and as an added bonus, it's ALREADY OD.. Well most of them, unless you go colorblind and buy a desert camo'd one.

If I would've gotten the 6.2, I was going to buy one of the surplus military trailers and set it up. The 6.2 had a pintle on it already.

so I took my platoon out last week and we conducted some mountain training.  our training consisted of a 4 mile round trip hike up a (at times) 60deg mountain trail while carrying a 30lb day pack.  the peak that I took them to was around 6000ft asl.  this was just a starter for them so I took it easy on them.  our next trip will consist of full kit and heavier packs with real equipment, going up the other side of the mountain which has en elevation of 7500ft asl.  during this trip they also learned how to properly set up security, terrain sketches, how to identify avenues of approach, etc.  the back ground of this picture you can clearly see the border of the United States of America and Mexico.

How dare you make aviation walk! The horror! But the scenery makes me miss working in Southern Arizona.

The 5.45 also has less recoil and -depending on who you ask, what you read, you're personal experience- it's supposed to be more accurate than the 7.62. However, I've not had the opportunity to try one out and see for myself.

I want a powered unit
Pole sections too small a diameter to house an internal pulley cable system
Too small and wouldn't be anywhere near the strength of a 4" section of schedule 40, come on!

Since you want to mount it to the topper, that setup would work with small mods. An air system with an internal ram would be ideal, plus give a bit more internal support, plus still be light.
