We had been ordering most of my steel from ShootingTargets7 along with their rubber straps to hang everything.  Lately we have been going with something like the JC Steel targets slotted targets with AR500 hangers.  They are more expensive but are a lot nicer if you are moving stuff around from time to time.  Also, no hardware or straps to worry about to brake or maintain.  I just put an order in to get a full 5x10 sheet of AR500 cut up for more targets and hanger posts for the club.

6 year old truck, about double the average mileage and just a 1500 so a short box to boot.

The box alone would be a deal breaker to me.

That one has the 6 -1/2 foot bed.  GM started giving the option for the longer bed with a 1500 crew in '14. On the shorter beds the fuel door is partially in the stamped area of the fender.  The longer 6-1/2 ft bed is harder to find compared to the standard shorter bed for the crew cabs and it does seem like you pay a bit of a premium for them.  I did a good bit of searching to find mine.

I had been looking at this exact kit.  At some point I still plan to get it. Without the stops the bags could be damaged if they were ran empty. The bags with the stops allow you to run them empty and protect the bag from damage should they be ran empty.

The new Vortex Strike Eagles are within your budget and getting some really great reviews.  I've looked through a couple and the glass is very nice for the price point.

Reviews on the Primary Arms are a bit mixed.  If only going out to 400 yards it might be ok for you.  The turret components are said to be plastic and don't track great.  They don't seem to hold up well to much abuse.

You have a lot of weld length so I am sure it is not going any where.  Were you pushing or pulling and what type of pattern were you using?  I'm guessing most of those welds will be somewhat exposed and visible.  Just wanting to help make them as pretty as possible.  The easiest way to make the best looking weld for me is to set my piece up so I am welding a bit down hill and then pulling the weld.

4k for that 925 should be a steal.  That said I think you might find it will be a bit large for your yard.  It would depend on what you have for landscaping etc...

I'm a product design engineer for Deere.  I have worked solely on mower decks for just shy of a decade now  I helped to put that 42A deck into production and currently own the design control of that family of decks.  I sit with the tractor team that owns the design control of the X354 and the rest of the select series line.  So I do have a bit of experience in this area.

What exactly are your plans for this machine.  Purely lawn mowing?  Do you want to use it for snow removal?  What does your landscaping look like now and do you plan to add any more obstacles to mow around.

A zero turn is great for flat yards, with little to no obsacles to mow around.  They are mowing machines and do not lend themselves well to other functions.  If you have any desire to do snow removal don't get a zero turn.  If you want a prestine looking yard and have a lot of obstacles to mow around I would not recommend a zero turn.  Yes, they turn fast.  But every time you mow around a tree you are dragging the tires in the same spot ever time.  This will lead to bare dirt in those areas eventually.

Tractor types can work great for mowing also.  They are a little bit slower on ground speed bit if you have a smaller yard or obstacles the full benefit of the faster ground speed isn't really noticed.  If you want to blow or push snow in the winter you want a tractor type.

It seems a 48" deck or there about would be ideal for your size yard.  A flat open yard doesn't matter much.  You will get better results from a bit smaller deck on hills and fitting between objects in some yards.

Those 4 wheel steer units are great.  They feel a bit squirrelly at first but after you drive one for a bit they are quite nice.  They are good for trimming but found them to be especially great at turning and trimming on side hills.

Do not buy any tractor type machine that advertises any type of automatic did lock.  Simply put they don't engage when you want them to and often times engage when you don't want them to.

We wrap our venison in some pretty heavy waxed paper type stuff we can get from the local paper mills.  It is a good bit heavier then the normal freezer paper you can buy.  With my folks being empty nesters now they don't go through it like they used too.  They gave me some stuff that was wrapped and froze 3 years ago.  No freezer burn and it was all perfectly fine for eating.  Every once in a while you might come across a corner or something where the paper wasn't wrapped quite right.  Just trim a bit of that edge and toss it to the dog.

First off, I am by no means a scholar.

From the understandings I have Jesus rose on a Sunday.

John 20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

In those times the first day of the week would have been a Sunday.  Saturday would have been their day of rest and the last day of the week.

Most of the discussion about time is related to Creation.  There really was no debate on if a day referenced in the Bible was a 24 hour period of time or something else until people tried to explain the Creation story and how everything happened in 7 days. The issue with the 7 days of Creation being anything other then (7) 24 hour days is that everywhere else in the Bible a day is 24 hours.

So are you just shortening it up a bit to reduce trailer weight?  Doesn't seem to me that you will be trimming off that much weight and it sounds like your intended cargo would keep you under 10,000.  Will the shortened trailer cause any concern for weight distribution when loading?

Well I ran one for her with a guy running at her from 21-31' away. At first she didn't know she had to shoot, until I said shoot, then she shot. The post scenario showed a complete miss overhead, an upper thoracic, left eye and left forearm. So I told her that yep she did good for someone who's never shot before.

Sounds like a great time. Good way for an 8 year old to learn too.

Last time I was in the sim the RO was LEO and ran the LEO programs with active shooter scenarios.  Crazy realistic.

Glad you had a good time.

Mostly I use the Hornady ELD-M.  I have never had an issue getting them to shoot and they are cheap enough.   I am not real stuck on super tiny groups or single digits SDs.  The targets are large enough at any given distance that any points I miss in a match are due to me not reading the wind right or just not making a good shot.  That was the main driver for going with a 6mm this time and adding some weight.  I want to better be able to spot my misses.

A lot of guys swear by the Berger Hybrids.  I've heard the A-tips don't seem to make much difference in the smaller stuff but really shine for the larger bullets.  They are spendy though.

Approximately 76” or so between fenders, drive over fenders are the plan and a winch.

Based on the sketch, the center section will be open/ not decked.  Do you plan on ramping the entire decked section over the wheels?

So 94" is from outside to outside?  What does that give you for width between the wheels/ fenders?  If I was doing my trailer project again I would be finding some spare tubing to splice into the axles to widen them closer to the max.  To many times I have found an extra couple of inches would have helped a lot with loading.

In a little over 2 years I've put just shy of 2700 rounds through this 6.5 CM barrel.  It still has a little life left in it but not enough to get me through the next season of shooting.  (assuming these bans on groups gets lifted and I can shoot some matches this year)

Decided to swap the 6.5Creedmoor for the 6GT cartridge.  I picked up the new barrel Sunday afternoon.  The old barrel was a medium palma contour.  The new barrel is an M24 contour.  The pics don't do justice to how much heavier this new barrel really is.  I plan on adding a few pounds of weight to the butt stock of the rifle to help balance things back out again.  After a good clean-up and scope of the old barrel I likely have another 500 rounds or so of life left in it.

I don't like the panhead idea, nor the tapping holes idea.
Maybe weld some other brackets on the sides?

what are your concerns with the ideas?

if it helps, the areas to be tapped/machined are 5/8”-11/16” of material. 1/4” plate of the main the body with 3/8”-7/16” plate welded to the corners where the bolts pass

It might be thick enough, but it is just mild steel.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Re: Zero turn or tractor
« on: February 18, 2020, 08:38:41 AM »
I have a little experience in the residential mowing arena..

It sounds like your lawn would be well suited for a zero turn.  Contrary to common belief, zero turns are not always the best for trimming around lots of objects like trees etc...  With a tractor the open diff prevents the lawn from getting torn up when turning.  With a zero turn it is very common to see a ring of dirt around a tree trunk.  This is because the inside tire is always getting dragged/ pivoting about and tearing the lawn up.

Zero turns work great on larger tracts also.  You can really take advantage of the faster speeds and can spin it back around on itself to maximize the amount of time you are actually mowing and not turning around at the end of each pass.  Is your lawn smooth enough to take advantage of the faster speeds?

How steep is the incline?  Side mowing with a zero turn can be an issue. If it is to steep to side mow, can you mow up and down and have space to turn around at the top or bottom of the hill?

Zero turns typically cost much less to mow the same amount of lawn.  A tractor of sorts with a 48" mower deck will cost much more then a zero turn with a 48" mower deck.  1 acre isn't that much to mow.  I think a 48" mower would be more then enough.  I mow just shy of 2 acres with a 48" and am fine.  Also consider what your landscaping looks like and determine what the maximum vehicle width is that still allows you to pass between whatever obstacle you might have.

If looking at a tractor, what size would you be considering?  Would you want to do anything it other then mow and possible pull a little yard cart?  What about snow removal?

How important is cut quality to you?  Do you just go out there and make tall grass short for another week or are you the type that really takes pride in having a well manicured lawn?

So maybe a dumb question, what’s wrong with a crew cab diesel? I have a family of 5, 3 girls the wife and I. My wife drove a crew cab diesel srw for years and we took it on family trips as well. Don’t get me wrong the excursion seating 8 is great but I’ve come to the conclusion it’s not ideal for a number of reasons.

Since I put the cover on my truck bed we take it on more family vacations/ road trips then we do my wife's vehicle.  It is just a lot easier to toss everything in the bed of the truck vs pack it in the back of her SUV.  Her fuel economy isn't that much better, plus it is more comfortable for me to drive all day.  We only have 2 kids so that does make it a little easier on seating for us.

I would doubt it would cause any harm being just water/alcohol unless there is Ammonia for the windows.

That seemed to be the general consensus from most people when I did a quick google search.  Some were concerned the alcohol would be corrosive and could cause pump and seal issues.  Others said the alcohol would quickly boil leaving just the water behind.  As long as the freezing point of the end solution was low enough for your location it wouldn't be an issue.  Some were concerned the boiling off of the alcohol would create vapor in the system and could cause a pump failure.  Then there was the one person who claimed a gel of some sort was formed when the coolant mixed with the washer fluid but yet everything was still cooling fine?

So she dumped it into the coolant resivor. When I took a look it still looked the same color blue as the fluid so I don't think it mixed with the coolant in the cooling system much.  I pumped everything out of the resivor and topped back off with coolant.  I think it should be fine for a while until I have time to do a full flush.  It is a 2015 nearing 100,000 miles anyway so it could use a flush and new fluid anyway.

Front is on blocks to drain/refill the chain oil so only lifting the back. Of course that is where the engine and all the fluids are on the 7k machine.

Ran down to HF and got the 4ton Daytona Floor jack which will end up at the Ridge.

Always seems to be the one not on sale I need or no coupon like several of the 3 tons.

There should have been a 25% off one item coupon you could have capitalized on yesterday.  I just purchased a new 3500 lb winch for the atv Tuesday.  The first one worked for 5 years of snow plowing before it failed.  After the tear down I am wondering if my install may have been the root cause of failure.  If I can get another 5 years out of the next one I will be happy.

Burris XTR II 5-25 optic with a mil-dot reticle.  I am wanting to upgrade the optic to a little better glass and different reticle over the winter also

So....

So...what???

The Burris served me well for going on 3 years.   It tracks great, and for a $1000 scope at the time the glass is pretty good.  I can tell a noticeable difference though in some of the harsher conditions though.  On a hot day it doesn't handle mirage as well as some of the better optics I've had to look through.  Also in wet, rainy conditions it's not as great as some of the better optics.
The reticle is also just a mil-dot reticle.  Again, it worked great for the first few years but now that I have some experience I have a better idea of what I want.  Something like the 7c the Razor offers would be just about ideal I think.  I like that it has .2 mil increments instead of just .5 mil.  A little more precise for both making holds and measuring misses.  I want some amount of a Christmas tree style reticle to allow me to hold for both windage and elevation at the same time but not super busy like the Horus (I think that's what it's called).  Also every other mil is numbered on the 7c.  Currently mine isn't numbered.  It doesn't seem like a big deal but it's easy to miscount and get flustered when you are trying to make your shot on the clock.

I had an internship at a company that made laminate beams for covered bridges.  We were gluing 2x6 and 2x8 lumber together to make very large beams.  I would cut the laminated beams up and break the joints in shear using a hydraulic press.  Then grade the joint based on how much of the wood failed compared to the glue.  Most of the failure was always in the wood and not the glue.

I currently have a 5 and 10 round.  I need a 12.  I've dropped more then a few points where I ran out of time fumbling for an extra round or mag change.  I have no idea what or if you have any options for anything larger then a 5 for that caliber/ gun.

One of the most important factors for extending brass life is not overworking it when sizing.  I am by no means and expert but I full-length size and only bump the shoulder back as much as I need to.

This is how I do it.  Important note here, it may take more then one firing before the brass expands to the size of your chamber and you need to bump the shoulder back.

I am shooting a Lone Peak Arms Fuzion action with a 26" Benchmark barrel chambered in 6.5CM.  The gunsmithing work was done by TS Customs.  I will be ordering a new barrel from him this winter as the current one is just about shot out and would recomend him to anybody looking for a custom bolt gun.  The rest of the setup is pretty budget friendly.  A KRG Bravo chassis/ stock and a Burris XTR II 5-25 optic with a mil-dot reticle.  I am wanting to upgrade the optic to a little better glass and different reticle over the winter also.  Ideally I would get a Tangent Theta but at this point the budget isn't going to allow a $4,000+ optic.  Will likely end up with a Razor or Steiner 5, maybe a Kahles.  I also picked up a Thunder Beast Arms certificate off a prize table a few weeks ago so planning on ordering a TBAC Ultra 7.  With the TBACs factory lead times and the nearly 12 month wait I am hoping to actually receive the suppressor for spring 2021 if I order this fall.

I shoot prone, modified prone, off a table or in any other position or off any other barricade the COF calls for.  Usually in a 9 or 10 stage match I am some sort of prone position for on average 3 stages.  If I am in a truly prone position I often times put the front legs out as in the pic below.  The lower the gun is to the ground the more stable the position, as long as you can get in behind it comfortably.

Here I am shooting off the "boat" stage.  The platform is suspended from cables and chains.  When you get on the platform it starts to swing and move.  Also the recoil from the shoot and working the bolt will cause the platform to swing.  Again I have the legs at a 45 to improve gun stability.

In some stages where real estate is at a minimum I will fold the legs back at a 45.  Here is an example where I should have done that.  If the legs would have been angled back I would have been able to get them on the barrel while moving the gun forward several inches.  This would have allowed me to get a bag or something under the rear of the gun to better support it for a better shot.

Just a standard prone position with the legs straight out but fully collapsed.  That is a 10 round mag.

Here is an example of a stage where some people would choose to deploy a bipod and others like myself use a bag.  I feel I am able to create a more stable position with the bag.  The downside to this is it is another piece of equipment I need to pick-up, move and position on the clock.  The bag I am using under the gun here is a Tacky Sack.  It's pretty versatile as both a bag under the gun as I am using here or as a rear bag when I have the bipod deployed out front.

We also recently found a bible study/ life group to take part in.  In the past it had always been hard to make time for it with the kids.  The group we are in now consist primarily of other couples with young families.  We split up food assignments and start the evening with a potluck style dinner.  Then we split up into groups for bible study while the older kids help watch the younger kids in the nursery area.

Just because your wife is good at her job doesn't mean it is what she should be doing.  My sister started her career as teacher, and I think she was a really good one.  But after a few years she was burned out and made a career change and is much happier with better pay.  My wife had also struggled quite a bit with her career.  Simply put, what she went to college for is not really a viable career in the area we live/ the life she would enjoy.  She bounced around from job to job for quite a while but was never really happy/ satisfied with her job.  A couple years ago we sat down and talked about what she wanted to do.  She thought she would really like to get into marketing, something her schooling does not qualify her for at all.  We prayed about it and I encouraged her to do some searching and take a few interviews.  After a couple failed attempts she got her foot in the door doing some social media marketing work and web design stuff for a local Baptist University.  She loves what she is doing now has great co-workers that encourage her in her faith and we get access to the faith based daycare ran by the university.

What do you mean by pic mount?  Atlas bipods mount to a picatany rail.  You have the option for one that will mount with bolted fasteners very similar to mounting scope rings to a rail.  The other option is the lever mount.  This will allow you to quickly remove the bipod and re install it.

I have the fastener style and wish I had the lever option.  On occasion there is a tight barricade stage in a shoot that I wish I could quickly remove the bipod.  It probably cost me a point or two on a stage this weekend where I would have removed it if it would have been easier.  For your use you probably don't need that option.  Unless you have other rifle that you want to use it on.

I have a set of those talon feet or whatever they are called.  Used them a couple times.  Out of the 10 or more matches I've shot this year I have yet to pull them out of my pack.  The rubber feet work great in nearly every situation.

For the shooting you will likely be doing a Harris would likely cover all your needs for a good bit less cash.

Nice choice on the bipod.  When I bought mine I wish I would have spent a bit more for the PSR version.

For rings I would look at Hawkins Precision.

This gun has a throw lever on it.  Especially helpful in a match when you just came off a prone stage that you cranked the magnification up to the max and forgot about it until you were searching for your target at the next stage.  You can see the out of focus rifle also has one.

Curious, do they ship free? With the deal I got at optics and free shipping think I got the same price.

When ordering from Optics Planet you can almost always call them up and ask them what the best price is.  It seems like they can almost always knock an additional 10% off.  I've even convinced them to take an additional 10% off an already killer sale price.

I'm going to diverge from everybody else.  While the 30-06 and .308 are both great rounds from a usability standpoint the 6.5 CM is what I would recommend.   It would be a great round for hunting a variety of critters.  Low on recoil so you can easily shoot it all day even without a brake.  I put 88 rounds through mine yesterday afternoon with no issue.  That makes just over 1500 rounds through that barrel since the first of the year. I know you can put a brake on those larger calibers to rain in the recoil, but they are wicked loud then in a hunting situation with no ear-pro.  It has been around long enough now that it has proven it isn't going to just be a fad and disappear.  I can easily buy match grade ammo for about $0.90 per round.  You won't be able to find quality .308 ammo any cheaper.

I say he has a 50/50 chance of getting a decent shooting Rem 700 from the factory.  There are other manufacturers that I would highly recommend, but unfortunately as seems to be the trend they are not USA made.  I think you would have a better change of getting a better shooting stick from Ruger over Remington.  I am an advocate for buying a barreled action and putting it in a good chassis or aftermarket stock.  Which Magpul is he looking at, the $350 or the closer to $1000?  A couple other options would be a KRG Bravo.  I've been running one for just short of 2 years now shortly after they came onto the market and have been extremely impressed with it.  If going to a removable magazine isn't a necessity there are some decent budget priced adjustable wood stocks out there.  stockystocks is a good place to search.  Grayboe is also another decent budget option for Rem 700 stocks.

A fixed 10 power is way to much magnification for hunting. For hunting purposes the max I would want is 3 power.  The Vortex Viper PST 3-15x44 FFP will likely be the optic I put on my next hunting rifle.  There are other Vortex Viper options that might work well from him and be a bit more budget friendly.
