Reminds me of the old days. Used to hang out at the salton sea for much of the summer, sometimes over to Glamis. To far north for that now.

There was the American Canal there too and was great for cooling down.

Funny, I will drop couple bills on a tool I use now and then. Should just bite the bullet as it will be a lifetime "tool".

I have camped just north of Bombbay beach a couple times, you can ride the Bradshaw trail all the way to the Colorado river, or take Red Canyon trail all the way to Pattons tank museum at Chiriaco Summit.... Many slot canyons back in there....

As far as the cooler, that was my thought also. Gonna have it a long time so I bit the bullet....

I guess I can say that i really put a cooler to the test.... About 3 times over the Summer (on full moons)a group of us meet to camp in the Imperial Sand Dune recreation area just west of Yuma. I picked up a Yeti 125 quart cooler and have been very pleased with the results, that thing just works. It was pricey but I have no regrets. I would assume most of the high end brands would also work but I can only tell you that this cooler keeps my Barley POP and water right where I like them.. ICE COLD.  As mentioned above you will get a much better result if you pre-cool the cooler and beverages. Also just dont buy any ice from the gas station, you want a Big solid piece of ice that is crystal clear and frozen hard.
I do run the AC/Genny in the Camper but only in the bedroom and only to sleep, so during the day the cooler is setting in a hot camper well over a hundred degrees and really never gets cooler that 90 at night.
Camping in the Dez in the summer sounds crazy but nothing like shredding the dunes when no one else is out there.....
Oh, and it is a dry heat.......
We ride from just before sun up till about 1000, then again at night till about midnight.. the rest of the time we nap and swim in the canal all day......
In years past you guys would have a black Chinook, at night, all blacked out, buzzing right over your heads. I know the pilot...
When I'd be working over in the Yuma area, hunting night time dune runners was one of my favorite tricks. I'd literally, err, I mean, he would come right over them low enough to scrape that flag thing.
Another favorite trick of, err, his
There is a long stretch of highway coming east out of Cheyenne going over into Nebraska. A lot of the road is built up on a raised earthen thing. A skilled pilot, in a Chinook, for example, could fly in close formation to a semi in the middle of the night. You know those all nighters when you are having thoughts of ailen abductions...those nights?

The road was perfect so that he could tuck right in beside the truck, so close that the rotor blades were over the cab by maybe 10 feet. I, well, he could ease the cockpit up next to the truck cab to watch the guy doing the "What the heck is going on" routine. Then one could snap a pic and pull up and turn away, just like you were never there.

Ah, NVG training can be so much fun.

Next week, I'll tell you about flying on rail roads toward a train, with the landing light on...

Oh, I have been buzzed many times, cool stuff....... really cool was sitting up on a high ridge and  watch when you, i mean your friend would buzz the floor down below us....... Another cool thing was some of brothers from a sister service (USMC) would come in and drop about 30 Chemlights and fly off to return later. We run over and take the chemlights and put them in all kinds of formations.....or just take them and play cat and mouse with the bird....

Fear the Walking Dead is good also, it shows how the whole Zombie Apocalypse started.... Some good points to be learned when watching it...
1. The government is there to protect it's interest, not protect you.

Nice work and it beefed it up alot. Plus you KNOW it is square now. Sure you got it on OK. If it tracks straight, you did good!

I used to have a old drain grate I used for welding. Was really nice as all the spittle just fell through and you could clamp anywhere.

How long is your 5th?
She is a Stellar 32DBG
from tip to tail she is 35'

All you had to do was flip the axles. You gain 6 inches. You don't actually flip them you pull them out and weld a saddle on the other side so the axle sits under the spring. I was going to take mine in because the guys at the trailer place have done it a hundred times and it would be done in a few hours.

These frames are so thin I don't know if I would feel comfortable cutting and welding on one. Very good write up though I have not doubt its as good or better than factory.
I thought about flipping them, however It would have been too tall. I'm at 13'3" now, that would have been right at the legal limit. I was shooting for what I needed/wanted. It took us about 6 hours to do the whole job, so it wasn't that bad. Also going up six inches makes that first step a doosey.

tell us about the process of ensuring your rails were square and even side to side when you welded them.  I may want to undertake this sometime

We built the entire sub-frame on the table and welded the stock axle hangers to it, making sure it was square. Tricky part was welding it all back to the trailer. Had to make sure that was square and all we did was measure it a bunch of different points and welded her up.  Tires are wearning fine, so I think we nailed.

By looking at Kens pics I think they went a different route, looks like they welded the lift to the frame individually.
In my mine I added 3 cross rails (2 2x2 on the ends and one 2x4 in the middle) to tighten everything up, almost as strong as square D's bumper I'm guessing.

You see that fancy welding table in pics 2,3 and 4, It is just like Don's welding table but fire proof and square. You use the slits in the table to set up a JIG, measure 32 times, cut once and have Dom weld it.
DOM is a buddy who owns a steel building company. All I can say is that everybody should have a Dom. He made this project possible.

I just read through your whole thread Ken, great job on all the work. The roof looks great and I will keep this thread in mind when I need to complete roof maintenance on my new rig. Like you I'm in the AZ sun and know the toll it takes on those rubber roofs.
I also installed the Dexter Axle E-Z Flex suspension on my rig when I added the lift, Momma said it rides much smoother now (she hangs out in the 5ver while en route to our destinations).
You did a awesome job on chopping up that garage for the Ranger, and the 6 volt upgrade is also on my list.
Mine came with a small solar panel, it seems to do a good job keeping voltage up when I have her parked for a long time.

Where you talking about Happy Jack for your mountain get away?
I want to check some area just west of Alpine about half way to Big Lake, have you been there?

I used to have a Ranger, then in 2011 I picked up a RZR900XP (I'm one of those crazy Duners)- looking at the new Yamaha with a tranny. (Maybe next year)

Hey Guys, wanted to share a project I did a few months ago with some friends.
I picked up a 2014 Stellar 5th Wheel last year and she sat with her tail about 2 inches lower in the rear when hooked up to my truck. I run a B&W turnover ball with the B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch. Even after setting the hitch to the lowest perch point I could not get the trailer lever on my stock height Dually.
First step was to get the trailer jacked up and remove the axles, then cut off the stock axle hangers. Then build a sub frame 4 inches tall then welding the stock axle hanger onto the beefed up boxed sub-frame. Then weld the entire thing back under the trailer. This MOD gave me the ability to go up 4 inches, I only needed two, so when I installed the axles back on I used the higher perch point (giving me two inches of lift).  I can go up another 2 inches if I ever decide to lift the truck (or for the next owner).

How do you post pics in between text? It seems the only option I have is to post all the pics at once.

BTW, the shop is a buddies, he supervised and did the heavy welding while I did the grunt work and wore out a bunch of grinding wheels.

Thanks for all the advice, just what I was looking for. I will go with the Bilstein's, a proven shock. NorCal Trucks is offing free shipping on the 5100's and they are about $125 cheaper than the Fox's. I will report back after to let you know how they compare to my worn out stockers.

28
Thanks Tate! Let us know what you think of the HD OEM's, I was hoping someone had some feed back on the Fox shocks.....

Good morning guys!
Looking for advice from this crusty crew of knowledgeable non vendors. I'm running a 08 GMC Duramax CCLB 4x4 Dually. She has 90k on her and I'm wanting to replace shocks. She sits stock height with pizza cutter 235/80 17s. I pull a 13k fifth wheel about half the time the truck is on the road. I also have a set of bags under her. I am hearing different things depending on who I ask, some say the Bilstein's will be the best shock for my situation and others are pointing me towards the Fox's Performance Series. The Fox shocks will run me about $125 more then the Bilstein's. But you can rebuild the Fox's. I always thought of the Fox shocks for more of an off road application and would make the 90 % of the time I am on pavement an uncomfortable ride.
Anyone have experience with the Fox's for a mostly pavement toy puller?
I followed you guys here from one of the other forums to see the rest of the Square D build (she is running!).
Below is a list of my MODs to the truck, all of which I installed myself with the help of Don write up on his Duaramax. Thanks!
I'm still a little hesitant to install the blocker plate, but will get to it someday.
Thanks in advance for advice on the shocks.....

Looks great Don! I was a faithful daily follower of this build on the "Other" site and joined you here after you started this site. However work and life interrupted my ability to follow along as you moved forward.  Well after catching up on the build all I can say is WOW. Thanks for sharing your talent, wisdom and experience for everyone.
However, I must add that when I started to catch up (around part 3) I never thought I would get to the end (current status) and still not hear that thing run.
I'm not sure what it is that makes us all want to hear Square D fire up, maybe the memories of when as teenagers we threw a new (newer) engine in one of our trucks and then we could not wait to turn the key-- We are reliving that moment with you now.
