So if all goes as planned I’m picking up this clean 2001 V10 Excursion Limited with 124k on the clock tomorrow.

I’ve been considering trucks for awhile now and always wanted one of these. The hand me down Honda Insight hybrid just ain’t cutting it for shop duty. So before it gets too many miles sipping fuel to the tune of mid 40’s per gallon we’re going to sell it to someone who will appreciate it more.

So I threw out a low ball offer over a week ago on this second owner unit. Guy turned me down but asked me for my card then called back to accept the standing offer last Friday. I take my funds to him tomorrow afternoon. Plan is pretty simple for this, tighten up steering (only issue I can find thus far) add some front window tint, roof rack, exterior spare tire carrier and bumper. Possibly front bumper and winch then some additional lighting and new tires with maybe a leveling kit and potential grizzly in the rear at some point. Possible banks upgrades but not sure if I’ll go full kit with headers or just keep manifolds. Use it to haul family / friends and shop supplies / camping gear.

Those V10's are all over the place in heavy class C RV's. I have wondered how they would do in a lighter application. I drove one for a month out in the cali desert at Ft. Erwin. Have to say, I didn't like it's weird sound, lack of power or horrible fuel mileage. But betting Ford has vastly improved the thing.

Those excursions are heavy pigs but ride nice because of it. The V10 holds its own,  but a Cummins swap turns them into a heck of a rig.

Well, if this wears out you can always Cummins swap them and I couldn’t find any non 6.0’s with low mileage

MAYBE AC? You must be crazier than I am to think you could live where you live without it!!! Several quality aftermarket AC options to make it work in basically anything.

We’re just looking out for your best interest in case the ferd AC does die.

I had a 6.0 excursion in Afghanistan as my people mover on Kandahar.... it died towards the end of my trip and I left with it at the DYNCORP mechanics. It had been there for a couple months by the time I left with no sign of being repaired.

I had an 04 f350 crew that tugged our 36’ enclosed exiss alum trailer around for 150K just fine. Then it started having issues and became a money pit........ 6.0L never again

Like an International J20 body over a cut down silvy (Nice riding) frame/chassis, like that?

Or K20 body on same chassis, or old highboy bod, say 1978 ish on same chassis...

Shawn, I haven't heard many gas engine related problems with those, but I have heard plenty of diesel problems with their high pressure oiling systems failing at very inopportune moments. seems like a good thing it's not ford diesel.

funny.. mine just did that! fortunately it was at my house and a friend came and towed it to his shop. still spendy, but she’s fixed now.

who in their right mind would make an injector that required high pressure oil to function.

5.9s and 6.6s dont. maybe that’s why they are common swaps and not PS swaps. hahah

Ford didn’t buy out international, they sued IInternational over the 6.0L issues.....

On another note interesting fact. When the first 7.3L turbo diesels arrived at Ford they had 500k warranty tags on them per an engineer I worked with who was employed at Ford (I was still in high school then btw). Ford freaked out about those tags and next thing you know the 7.3L’s had 100k warranties instead.....

Correct international 6.0L is 200hp FYI

At 150k my 04 f350 crew went in for injectors at dealer. Was there for a week and a bill of 3-5k can’t recall exactly. Wife’s dad was in area so dropped wife off to pick it up and she gets 3/4 the way home on a 45 min drive and calls me up. Says I think it’s doing same thing again. I said is it or isn’t it? She says it is and limps it home. They get a call and pick it up, another 2 weeks go by and I get a call your truck is done. So I go in and they hand me keys, no bill or paper work or explanation......

Quick update, drove the truck several hundred miles so far. Needs shocks, working on getting a set of radflo’s as I’m a dealer. Ordered a set of oem 2005 headlight lenses and will convert them. Looking at new shoes and will have to address the slop in steering. Some of which i think isn’t steering but poor shocks and is adding to poor handling. Thing is a pig and needs some help for the fat girl.

square. bigger fish eye mirrors. better vision. i can see both rear tires to above the door handles in the lower fish eyes. and the large flat mirrors from the door handles up.

plus.. they look better. hah

Copy, ordered a set. Was considering anyhow as these were originals and the extruded alum extensions were starting to lose their finish as they all do those years.

been a lot of work with parts and pieces from all over to get it to where it is now.

add a leaf up front.. which ‘leveled’ it. but put a milk jug in the back and she slumped down some. no bueno
so.. swapped over to F350 blocks (3.5” tall instead of 2” tall from f250 blocks). done

2 steel wheel spacers to run newer 20” rims from 05+ SD trucks. (these are 07 king  ranch rim)

05-07 headlight conversion 
08+ mirrors.
08+ rear tail lights.
05-07 grill conversion.

and now i think i’m done with this one. just need it reliable until the square body LBZ is done. hah

So I’ve ordered a few things but have not had time to do anything with them. But the add on list as follows....

Cooper ATP tires 285/75R16 x 5 (tires on it I may run until this fall)

2008 tow mirrors

2005 headlights

And still looking at winches and possibly a hidden winch mount so I can keep stock front bumper

Did find some paint peeling in a couple spots top side so may have it linex’d across top. Have appointment for front window tint. And may just keep spare in rear but laid down on floor then build a cabinet over it with a flip out portion to lay over back rear seat when it is folded down. This would protect seat and make nice flat area for camping equipment storage.

Sorry Ken it’s been a crap show last two days. Finally not raining so I started laying tile and sprinkler line in back yard last two days and moms pod showed up late yesterday so had to unload that and setup furniture etc for her.

7.3s with an SXE turbo and a tune run and tow great. Brings em into the modern era IMHO

I’ve done further research and banks kit is a waste of money on a v10. I may find a tuner and do the motor and trans with slight tow tune. In addition I checked and this came with 4.30 gears and limited slip rear. Seriously considering a grizzly locker for the rear in this though.

I’ve done further research and banks kit is a waste of money on a v10. I may find a tuner and do the motor and trans with slight tow tune. In addition I checked and this came with 4.30 gears and limited slip rear. Seriously considering a grizzly locker for the rear in this though.

Which wrangler is on there currently? We have the all terrain adventure on our Toyota, came on the truck. Less than 25k on them and we’re down one out of the original 5 because of a hole that could not be plugged/patched. And another one has a slow leak. And they are well over half way gone. Figuring if we keep it and move it with us in January, it will need new tires before it gets on a boat.

Turner, I’m not sure. Corners are worn pretty good on them but all in all they had a good 1/4” or more of tread across center. Plan was to keep them on until Sept. however we have two camping weekends coming up this summer and it will get loaded with gear and kids so not risking a blow out on used tires. I had noticed prior to buying it that at some point I believe it had a rear drivers blowout as inner fender liner (plastic) is busted up. I had these tires on a 3/4 ton D rated once and lost it coming across Cinci bridge on i75, was not much fun.....

Also worth noting I think these tires have been on there for a few years.

Along with age, it’s not a small vehicle so I suppose there’s a wee bit difference in how the tires live. But still disappointed in these overall, certainly won’t buy them if and when we put tires on it.

So new tires showed up according to tracking info. Need to get them picked up in next couple days and mounted. Lifting Baylee’s tj tomorrow with budget boost btw. I did try to sneak the new mirrors on today and ran into a slight issue. Although my pig has power and heated mirrors it has the older 2 connector version on the wiring versus the new single plug. So $21 later and I route from amazon I will have adapter plugs sometime tomorrow. I also purchased new door speakers as I have to remove speakers to run wiring for mirrors so might as well upgrade those too.
