I did ask Sean to post this.

I would like feedback from Daune and anyone else who is anticipating joining us.

I am willing to modify the dates somewhat. I could do something in August. Sean makes a good point here about choosing perhaps the BEST time when we have the biggest bang for the buck.

It takes a week to get to Sean's place (anticipated jump-off point) then another 4-to 5 days just to get to the Alcan and another five days to get to a point south of Fairbanks.

For me, the road going north of Fairbanks is going to start getting sporty sometime in September, I want to be south of that before the snow starts. I do not exactly when that may happen. But from what I recall about Alaska, Fairbanks, and points north is way different than further south like Anchorage.

I would work with an August departure from Montana, so I suppose we talk about that.
Phil, are you on this thread? Can you weigh in on the weather north of Fairbanks? Give us some idea about when the window opens and closes for safe travel to the Prudo Bay area.

Duane, can you weigh in about when you are available to do this?

Don, that is was I meant, build a nice covered area for it at home. Doesn’t need to be attached to existing home just somewhat near. Run power and a water line even if you don’t ever use them. Covered storage really helps when time to sell the place. If it rests in its spot you don’t need to worry about trying to roll it around.
Well, that solution would be ideal, however, my HOA does not allow for any detached buildings AT ALL. They do not allow campers to be parked for more than a couple of days. Think Nazi Gestapo and you get the picture. I would erect a covered structure in a New York minute if I could.

Today, Kat installed a Posturepedic memory foam mattress. She likes those, I, however, do not.

But this thing is not about me, but about getting a pretty girl to happen along with me going down the trail!

At the moment the camper remains perched on the back of the truck.

I am looking at storage possibilities and I think there is a pretty big chance that I will not be able to fit it in the garage. I have nine-foot garage doors. Sitting on the truck, the camper sits right at 12 feet tall according to a crude/eyeball measuring tape measurement at the dealership. That means there needs to be three feet below the lowest point on the camper to just slide it on its belly and clear. Now we obviously will not be doing that, so there needs to be room for a sled of some kind to fit beneath the thing as well.

I am only seeing something like two feet below the jack feet, so it is a total no-go in the present configuration. I will look at removing the storage legs to see what that yields. If all that works, then I have some designing to do. You see, the sled will have to be a minimum height, maybe 4"-5" or I will lose valuable space. So, I will have to design a sled that jacks up/down so that it can rise to meet the camper with its legs extended, then lower itself almost to the ground laden with the weight of the camper, say 4,000 lbs. If the measurements work out, I think I will be building with 3" square steel tubing and some sort of jack or scissors mechanism.

This is speculative, of course at this point. I suppose I could entertain adding another garage bay, but that would cost more than the camper itself. I am not keen on off-site storage. Kathy is doing her thing in there and is spending hours sizing, loading, storing, and thinking about how the thing is going to work for us. Therefore, I need the camper to remain here where she can access it without just sitting in the driveway outdoors.

Everyone comments on the color combo. Sort of slipped into that one.
With the slide-in, it is the same width as any other truck bed camper. Obviously with the slide poking out 30" it gets that much bigger.  It is longer, about 18" I believe.

The arrangement about doubles the available space to move around on the inside. With one of these, you're going to be doing all of your living on the outside. Inside is bedtime, cooking, or hygiene. I suppose you could camp out inside during inclement weather.

We had a couple hot water issues which turned out to be a prime issue at the heater which resolved. Kathy asked for "White colored" screws. The owner himself came out and pulled the visible screws and reinstalled some white ones that blended in much better.

I like that place. THey are going to ship us a new TV.

With that done we drove along country roads for over a hundred miles from 35mph up to around 60. I found no concerning handling issues. Later we merged onto I69, then I74. We just set the cruise at 70 and it was like no big deal at all. No rolling or rocking or wind from semis, nothing. THe thing is very, very stable, and I don't even have a sway bar on it yet!

I experimented with cruising at 75mph and that, too, was very easy.

That 1050 ft-lbs and those 4.10's made for brisk acceleration as well. At this point in time I am very pleased with the package.

Kathy is outside fixing it up. My deal with her is, "She has the inside, I have the outside." I haven't looked, but my money says there are already some flowers somewhere in there...

The delivery staff moved smoothly through the orientation process, and I had a lot to absorb. Kathy was equally as interested and learned about as much as I did.

The dealership, "The Outpost" Is very highly rated amongst the bloggers, people who purchased there, and in the chat rooms.

After going through the process, I can see why.

The owner Phaylon and our salesman, Henry were great people. Dead honest, friendly, and seemed genuinely interested in us and what we were doing. I fear I may have told one too many Armee stories. I hope they forgive me! ;-)

Well, we went to Middlebury.

There was some challenging weather to deal with. A tornado 75 miles south of us on the ground and a really huge Cumulus-Nimbus, I had to crawl through.

We went over to Indy, then north to South Bend, then east a little way, past the Studebaker plant to Middlebury IN. That is a cool area/town. We had to follow/pass so many Amish buggies, that I lost count. Really, like a couple dozen.

When we arrived, they had our new 3210 ready, not the 2902 I purchased. You see when I bought the bigger bed and dual wheels, we thought, why settle for a smaller slide-in when we could go for their flagship? And that's what we did!

Here it is to close out this thread. I'll start a proper thread on it.

Sean, I don't think so. The wheel is only 6" wide. I believe that tire would be happier on an 8" rim width

The stock tire on my truck is a 235/80R17E on/off-road tires. Mine has the Nexen which looks pretty capable out of the box. Thinking I could handle wet grass with no problem. ;-)

I’m not suggestion you mount up a set of 22” wheels.
But facts is facts and picture is proof large wide tires on the stock wheels of 6” wide rim will provide poor tread pattern

This is my contact path with 65 psi ( recommended is 75psi) on a 305/75/17 tire

Of course it will do and I’ll suffer my consequences for my choices, there simply are not a lot of aftermarket wide wheel options that are in the smaller diameter -18” wheel

Dave, I am not into the big tire on the dually look. In fact I very much dislike it.
I AM NOT going to wide tires as they serve no purpose on this truck. With my single rear-wheel Ram 3500, I wanted the typical larger footprint for limited off roading. Now that I have gone to a full-sized dually, I am tossing any notion of anything other than a two-track. This one will stay on dirt roads and cross mud puddles, nothing more. So All I'll do eventually is to toss on that Carli suspension I had before which is a level + 1" rear spacer and use either the stock size or one size larger tire, probably on stock rims.

Roller-skate look: It looks like a skateboard to me. Long and wide and low.
I didn't like the look at the stealership, but I confess, it is warming up on me.
Who knows, I may get to actually liking this truck!
That makes sense, I would like to drop tire size as well. It handles really well but I imp pretty sure it’s to much height lost for the fifthwheel.

285 tire I think gives enough rubber for ride quality and looks good as well.

Only complaint I have in the DRW is getting into drive through windows.  I now just walk into the bank

Today, I needed cash for a haircut, so I went to the ATM.
Arriving there I started doing some mental math and in the end, I opened my door walked over to the machine, and got my cash. Nope, a Dually does not like tight spaces.
I am digging the secure/planted feeling I am getting while driving.
Tomorrow and Friday will be a good test of hauling 3,600 lbs in the bed on a totally stock setup.

I never run recommended. Air it down until you have full tread contact (mostly) I only air up when I need the load. Now this is just me, has worked OK for 50 years.

I run 50/45 in the dmax normal. I used to run 26 in my 77 GMC.

Can't wait for the fluid change!
Air pressure as delivered is 90 psi in the fronts and 72 psi in the rear tires.
I will air down after I get home. Leaving in the morrow to pick up that big/new truck camper.

Curious how much of the Carli suspension stuff from the other rig would cross over?

The shocks all the same, the front end linkage could be different but I doubt it. Don’t recall if the back had a block on it.

Tire change will be interesting, 6.5” wheel width is the standard and there are about zero tire options in a 33”+ that is less then a 12” wide tire. Bfg does offer a 34” tall tire that’s 10 wide. I’ll be ordering those when the ones I put on are toast

Dave I have forged aluminum 17 X 6" wheels
I do not like the roller skate look
It is what it is, and no rear block (yet)

It looks like that same Carli stuff I purchased will all fit, so after Wyoming this summer, Tate will be getting another call.

I pulled the airbags off the other Ram I had and it does not look like they will fit.

The rear spring pack is like nothing I have ever seen

Three sets of leaves. The overload at the top is like 3" from contacting. The primary pack has really thick leaves. Then there's a super thick leaf on the bottom that does not touch the main pack but is like 2" from contacting. I am going to do something about all that, but first, this Thursday I go to pick up the camper. It will be coming home in an otherwise stock Ram.

Oh and since I now own an 8' bed, I purchased a larger camper that weighs around 3,700 full of water.

That’s good news.

When I typed sold it in the other thread it was I thought a joke.
But I see now…

I liked the blue better but this is ok…once new wheels and a few more bits of the Don’s oil change occur.

It will serve you well in any case and glad you caught the error before that broken frame pic Dave posted type event occurred, or worse as you’d stated some sort of accident where you were found negligent.

Nice rig tho boss!

I think someone upstairs took care of me. The unit was discounted a ton. Way down to the mid-70s. The dealership that sold it gave me a super trade-in which I was not expecting.
Of course I lost money, but not nearly what I was anticipating. I actually think I wasn't hurt all that badly.

The HO engine looks the same as the standard. I am sure it is only a tuning difference. The AISIS transmission is way mo-better-er than the transmission I had in Ram-1.

It also has that cool panoramic camera view for handling big trailers and fifth wheels. Finally there is some sort of trailer backing technology built in too. Cameras are everywhere.
