20psi is plenty for all the low end components.. which were what was creating the pressure anyway. the pushrods and rockers only see slight movement at their intersections, and it was only for 30 sec. the cam is what is super crucial, and it was a 'used' cam that checked out great when inspected.
but you're absolutely right. the first little bit of a gas motor running esp with a new cam are very important. the guy didn't seem to think that we're were any issues at all with it doing what it did. could and would have been had he not caught it, or knew where to look. we will see..

so.. engine was cranked yesterday. fired right up. ran strong. no leaks.. or so he thought.
had the oil pressure gauge hooked up. only get 20 at idle. 25 at rev. ran for 30 sec or so. didn't change at all. he shut it down.. sat down and was sick.
looked under the valve covers. not getting oil to a couple rockers. weird.
thought about it.. called another buddy who builds engines. asked if he has any issues like this before. the guy immediately asks who did the machine work. he told him, to which the other builder replied 'last one he did for me, he left the oil journal freeze plug out of the tappet galley' (where push rods go up from cam to rockers)
so.. my guy pulled the pump and tappet cover in about 45 min and found out it was indeed gone. which was just letting oil ooze out of the oil journal and not pushing it up to the rockers OR allowing oil pressure to build.
called cummins by my house this morning and they had a couple. so my dad went to pick them up as well as fuel supply washers to replace the used ones and headed to greensboro to help install and break it in once it's all back together. will know this afternoon if it runs like it should..

i officially have possession of the title to the '89. just been waiting on the duplicate to come back from DMV (i took the form to original owner and helped him fill it out hahah) going to hopefully get it off relatively soon. and when i get back from ohio (NFL HOF gig) ill figure out how to get it to the shop and start some disassembly/collection of a short bed from somewhere so i can start taking measurements for bobbing the bed.

after waaaay too much waiting.. the injectors have finally arrived at the builders shop. so hopefully this afternoon/tmrw morning he will have it assembled and possibly running before he's out of town this weekend.

somewhere around the front pinion is going to be stamped 60 or 61. and the rear will either be a 71 (3.07 gears) or 70 (3.54-4.10). but the embossed 60/61 will be ~3/4" tall. frame really doesn't look that bad at all. i'm in on the gasser body swap.

i thought they quit with the 3.07 dana 61/71s when they bumped it from a 3 speed auto to 4 speed auto (91.5) and kept the manual 5 speeds. could be wrong. but my guess is dana 60/70 with 3.54s.
i suppose time will tell.. and a good cleaning.

Bro, I'd recommend staying with the crossflow 6bt unit. They seem to work, its larger, greater capacity, more cooling finnage, easily replaced...
they came in front of those engines for a reason. and.. as previously stated, easily available in the aluminum flavor. and all the hoses will work. etc. if it can be easily done, do it

so i know this build is a little ways off yet, but i'm trying to find a direction with it.
one tons. yes.
cummins (either 2nd gen 12 valve ppump or common rail and auto) yes
short bed. yes
leather interior. yes.
35"-37s. yes.
BUT.. the question remains with the front axle/suspension.
do i either
A. wait for a unicorn 79 f350 HP kingpin dana 60 with leaves.
B same axle with long arms and coils
C. Mid 90s F350 ball joint 60 (8x6.5 lugs) with either option A or B
or
D. stick with basically stock 1 ton chevy (or first gen cummins) PSD dana 60 and leaves (simplest)
i suppose i could always do something silly like 99+ f250/350 front and rear too.. but that just messes up wheel choices i suppose. (just gets away from the 'period' and moves into the 8x170)
leaves wouldn't be terrible.. mainly bc they would be alcans. but.. can't say it wouldn't be cool to have a coil sprung, long arm crew cab square body cummins

motor should be done by next weekend. all the parts are at the builder. he was waiting on main bearings to be swapped out and for valve springs/GSK to come in. he told me he'd either start this weekend or on monday and most likely have it done in 2 days.
my dad got the glass today and couldn't stand it so he drove 30 min to the shop and put them in. i think he's beside himself with the way it looks and with the engine nearly done. going to have to thread a needle with putting it in after my wedding and before i head to NYC and ohio for nearly a month starting early july. but.. i think it's doable. more pics to follow once i get word from the builder.

the kaiser gets a windscreen!!    gray laminate windshield glass. cut to fit both sides. with universal 1/8"-1/4" metal/glass gasket. matches the side windows (35%) perfectly. the rear will be done the same way. (single pane)

how's this for an IH Scout II shot?  friend of mine and his son are on a semi cross country trek for the sons HS graduation present in his built 79 scout. '05 bow tie drivetrain (w/dana 300 tcase) built 44s. recaro seats. fuel rims wrapped in G2s. thing rides/drives like silverado. it's awesome. can't wait to hear all about it once they return.

first pics from the builder!   doesn't look like much.. but all the aluminum/steel stuff (injection lines, intake, compressor housing and valve covers) have all been bead blasted clean and clear coated. engine will return to its natural color (cummins beige of course) and i'll keep the hot and cold water lines to the heater core their blue and red. exhaust manifold will be black or course. a couple of new rubber hoses to clean off the look. i'm giddy. i can't wait to see it back together.

builder has the block. all the parts, sans the intake/exhaust springs (60#) and a set of 4k gov springs are in his possessions. they are ordered and en route to his house. hoping to have a completed engine by next weekend.

engine builder said he was hoping to have the machine work wrapped up this week. which means next week is assembly. have to finish a house in less than 10 days, move my fiancée and continue wedding planning until mid june. hoping to get a day or two to install it fairly soon. guess it depends on how things are moving along. we will see..

the plan is to bob 14" out of it, put a short box on it, either 4link or leaf spring a front dana 60 (unsure of drop yet, since i will most likely decide that once drivetrain is picked out) with some 18/20s and 35s. going for a brand new old truck look.

a dually for me would be impractical. too wide.. and added weight. i won't pull anything that would need that anyway. plus.. crew cab short bed square body on 20s and 35/37s will look killer.. IMHO.
it'll most likely end up with helper springs and bags (load leveling..) for pulling and better unloaded ride quality. haven't made any decisions on front end yet.. but 4 link and coils would be awesome. would ride like a new F250..
who knows.. it's just bones at the moment. it'll be a minute before anything major happens to it. just wanted to actually prove i found one. lol

just gonna leave this here for a teaser since i don't have any pics yet.. but i've found one. made rj deal yesterday so it's 50% mine. taking some $$ today/tomorrow and figuring out a way to get it away this week. 1988 chevy cheyenne 3+3 r2500. original owner. straight as an arrow with no rust apart from minor surface oxidation under the paint. seized 350 (no matter.. you know what's going in it ) 14 bolt of unknown gearing. and dry as a bone. once i drop some $$ off, i'll get some more pics. it's less than 1 mile from my new house. plan is to far it apart, blasted and epoxy primed. then just let it sit until i get a chance to actually start on it after his house reno and wedding. that's eating up time and $$ like a teenager (from what my parents have told me..) hahaha and i know i know.. pics or it didn't happen. they're coming.

off topic i know. but of the little time the kaiser wasn't at the house, 2 of the most unusual people have stopped and asked about it. one being a 70 yr old grandma who loves monster trucks and wants one, the other being a tatted up brotha in skinny jeans and a flat brim driving a lowered infiniti g35.. he stopped us while we were pulling it on the trailer leaving the trans shop.. talked to us for a good 30 min and even facetime'd someone to show them. hahah
anyway.. continue with the revamp of a very nice, clean old truck that i think by this point, everyone on here would gladly take off your hands

i know diesel isn't as corrosive as gas, but will that in take pump push enough fuel to the cummins for higher RPM operation? it doesn't get much more reliable than a block driven lift pump and a 1/2" fuel line coming straight from the tank..

it's what the M715.9 got. it came from dodge that way. just make sure when you go to adjust the TV cable (assuming it's a PPump) that the center of the ball where the accel cable attaches and the back of the throttle bracket where the accel cable goes through it measures 5.00"..
and.. a 23 spline NP 205 will bolt right to it provided you have the 'race track 8' to 6 bolt round adapter and a 23 spline female coupler. along with the tcase shifter lever and bracket bolt to the trans. just have to make a rod long enough to reach the front of the shift rod. boom. 4wheel drive.

well these showed up today. ordered them when i was in texas and before i found out the motor blew. was dyooosed to be an 'it's running!' surprise for my dad. but.. they're still cool.

cam is in 4 pieces. the 2 lobes in #4 cylinder are independent. leaving the from 3 cylinders connected and the rear 2. hahah.
best we can figure: 1 connecting rod bearing cap bolt backed completely out. which allowed for the cap to 'stretch' apart.. wiping out the bearing. after a couple revs (not many i assure you) second connecting rod bearing cap bolt bent and let loose.. jamming the cap in pass side. the connecting rod pendulumed and when the turbo pressure went in through the intake valve, pushed the piston down the cylinder, allowing the connecting rod journal on the crank to make contact with it, pushing it to the drivers side, and wedging itself in tight. at the same time wiping the cam out.. and making it impossible to move via the harmonic balancer.
we had to pull the pan, jiggle the cam lobes loose (push rods and lifters fell out also.. nearly hitting my dad in the noggin) then using a 2' pry bar, had to jamb it between the DS block and connecting rod bearing journal to pry it against the crank to get it to turn so we could get the torque converter bolts out.
7 hrs start to finish. but it's out and sitting on the stand (sweet score from the 4bt purchase) and awaiting transport to greensboro where it'll be worked on/built
