One of tomorrow’s projects, getting bottom of bed painted after I sweep it off and wipe it down one last time.

I like the wood idea, why I asked.

That should seal the bed up OK.

Seriously though, to my knowledge Henry Ford started doing it that way on all their trucks. I’ve always done it that way even with our 26k gvw flatbeds and no issues.

I agree, but I had no idea Ford started it.

My grand dads 37 (flatbed from the factory work truck) was this way, my neighbor who specializes in ford hot rods claimed all the old Ford trucks were done like this.

I see it on bob tails all the time. Think its a great idea with both dissimilar metals and non factory beds/boxes.

Man, surprised you're not making your own bed considering the amount of work you're doing to this one!
I like the crane receiver idea. Never thought of doing it that way.... more than one use possibly.
Personally I won't use raptor again. Not having great luck with it. Maybe it's the Arizona UVs, or the installer. Not sure

So the heads been off of the 24v? I couldn't tell that it had been apart...if so I would have questioned it when I got it. Urrr

Right, I paid $1k for the bed. Steel would have cost more than that so what you see is what you get.

Agree on crane receiver but not sure what else I can put in there? Flag pole for my Trump flag? Heavy duty stripper pole for your gf H? But nobody wants to see that.....

Yeah, head had recently been off that motor I think. It was definitely off at some point, is what it is though. Also for record bottom end bearings were pretty worn for a 100k ish motor (per my diesel mechanic who sees similar on 200-300k motors) although copper was not showing on them yet. Crank looked good as did pistons.

While I’ve never owned a ferd, our M925 had wood between bed and frame, which I thought was weird, simply because I didn’t understand it. I’d bet Ken’s 5ton has it between bed and frame, but not 100% certain.

I typically do not keep track of total costs in a project as I build them for myself. Yes, I keep receipts in a folder and just push ahead normally then at end of year or project tally it up.

However, I offered my mechanic the other day some money towards parts he had purchased as things were delayed again with having to machine bottom end. His response was no thank you, then followed by “that motor is worth a hell of a lot more than you owe me”.

Which got me thinking I owe him $3K ish or so with parts and labor. So last night I took a quick tally of approximate money spent on this motor so far. All I’m gunna say is wow, that added up quick....... definitely most expensive I’ve built by 2x or 3x as much money. Hope it’s all worth it when complete.

As long as it runs it will be worth it. You don’t want it sitting around 90% complete for years and then part it out....

I’m like you. I still don’t know how much I have in the guest house but I have a box full for receipts.

In the end it’s only worth what someone would pay for it if I sell

100% agree, I need this truck as the excursion is ok but needs to move on down the road I think. Part of me wants to keep it and cummins swap it but not very realistic I don’t think. So gotta keep pushing forward on the fummins truck. It will get there hopefully in next month or two.

Welp, rabbit hole gets deeper yet. Got off phone with machinist, bores on front 4 holes are at high side of tolerance before honing. Boring .020 over and high compression pistons, another week to ten days.

Well, there’s an update on that too. Seems he found the paperwork in which he was the first that really overpaid for the boat anchor. He texted that info to me last week. If it’s any consolation to him I paid less than he paid initially but I’m thinking he got out cheap!  lol

Also worth noting apparently these vp44 engine kits run quite a bit more or so I was told. In the end the foundation being, core head, block and crank are able to be made right. So it’s not what Ken and I thought it was but it isn’t our first rodeo so we’re not surprised really.

Ok, so looking for honest opinions (other than Ken). I’m prepping the top side of the bed for some epoxy primer and then raptor liner. So in that process I pulled out these window guards. I’m up in the air whether to print and re install or leave out of maybe put something in a little more custom (custom is my last choice atm). What says the RM forum?

Something like a scaled up diff cover, say a dana-60 outline that points to your signature product. Maybe some custom painting on it to make it stand out from the rhino liner

Fummins, this is the fummins thread still I believe?

I had purchased a bean sump kit earlier as well, the plan will be to use the aftermarket 50 Gallon tank. More info to come shortly on all of that.

Then stopped by lumber yard on way home and sourced a piece of red oak that measure 1 13/16 x 3 1/2” x 14’ for under $50 (I needed 1 3/4 x 3, so I think this will work w/o modifying the rectangle size. I’ll cut it into 4 pieces and coat it (yet to be determined with what exactly) for semi weather proofing.

I’ve also decided for the time being no window guards. That may change at a later date but I like being able to see out my rear window.

Large turbo is still on back order, spoke with them yesterday and they added another month. Guessing it or parts are on a boat.

Shawn, who did you buy your turbo from? Our entire fuel system and turbo came from dieseltuff.com. Really great guy to work with.
