Today.   Unload table saw, compound miter saw, and other assorted tools from the trailer and reorg in the shop. ( I finally got my tools back from my dad in prep for the casita build).  Unloaded a trailer full of oak and split it and piled it up by the wood pile. Box bladed the drive to get the ruts out from the rain we had.  Unloaded barrels of fuel to the shop.  Sharpened the blades on the mower and added a pre filter to the air filter and topped off the drive oil.  then mowed the yard and a few trails.  Then cleaned the mower and then rotated the wheels on the Bus and washed the insides of the wheels while they were off.  Then attacked the windshield with windex as the black flies are as bad as Ive ever seen them.  Shower, laundry, dinner, drink, done.  I'm out.

Congrats on the purchase. Gassers certainly have better manners. My original reason for a diesel was about availability of fuel in an emergency. Fuel storage for gas is a bit more tricky.

I owned a F150 back in 1995. Twin I Beam stunk. The new ones seem much better. I'm still a GM guy just for the IFS and the crappy city streets.

Mark, well done. This site may be more of an anti social media, by that I mean it's very different than other social media sites. I'm in senior leadership for a fortune 20 company and am responsible for sales and account management. I commend your handling of this situation. Factual and not relying on your own perception but brining in other people to help and then allowing Don to listen as well. We record calls for just this reason and while it's not often needed it can be very helpful in situations like these.   Most social media users will flame you to 100 for some perceived wrong. The Real Men on this site will promote you to 10 just because of how you handled this. As for me, I value the customers that promote me to others because it's much harder to find people to tell a positive story than a bad one.

Thanks for coming on the site and please do stick around. There are a bunch of really great guys here and it sounds like you would fit in well.

Shawn, happy birthday brother. I lifted a glass to you and all my texas friends today. My team descended en mass on one of my team members homes who was flooded. We demod everything up to 4ft. Plus all the baths and showers.

My God I am grateful we were spared.  That entire neighborhood was wiped out. You couldn't even navigate the streets with all the vehicles that were at neighbors homes piling furniture and debris. I'm talking massive 30x30x10ft piles of crap. The smell was like a bait shop without refrigeration in July.

There was a Texas sized helping of Git-R-Dun today

The casita is looking good.

So one of the reasons I have this place is for events just like Harvey. Living in the middle of 4M people presents a challenge to evacuate in the event of an emergency.  In this case, knowing when to leave is the real key.  You must have an early warning system and multiple routes. See my concentric circle philosophy.  Keeping both trucks full is also a key. On the Bus I run 75 gallons and when the needle comes up off full, indicating that I've used 40 gallons, I fill.  That means I never have less than 35 gallons. On the dually I always have the 60 gallon tank full and fill the main tank when it gets 1/2 full.  That means I never have less than 75 gallons. I also keep at least a months worth of food at the hide in the freezer and pantry, not to mention a years worth of long term food. So the plan worked well.  If I had to say there was a lesson to be learned it would be to have a bigger generator and more gas stored.  I really need a mil surplus trailer mounted diesel gen set so I can power the entire house,  either the Houston or the hide house.

Some good stuff here....

I think the big key is getting out of Dodge early- from what I have read traffic tie-ups, accidents etc. is what killed a bunch of people when they evacuated late during Hurricane Rita evacuations.

I like the fuel aspect- always having enough available. Do you store any you could easily load in the truck should you need it?

Curious about the whole house generator....I like the idea of having one mounted in a trailer. Have you given a thought to fuel? Would you have fuel at both locations or carry that too? Also curious about whether diesel or LP would be a better choice. I like the storage aspect of LP for something like that (not likely to be used that often), but maybe the ability to use it in a vehicle also lends itself to diesel. But with the added "work" of rotating it.

I am really glad it all worked out for you and your family. When you see what others who did not have a plan have gone through/are going through you should be proud that for your family it was sort of a "vacation". Good for you TRN!

So I made a 4 wire cable with locking 20A plug for the ten and a 4 wire RV plug on the other end.  Flip main breaker off and run generator in the shop and plug into the 50 amp 240 circuit in the shop to back feed the main panel.

The reason I want a mobile get set is to be portable and use it at either location.  I've seen trailer mounted get sets in mil surp that have a large tank as part of the trailer.  A good friend has two CUCV trucks with gen sets on them.  One is a 6.5 GM diesel with pto driven 12kw gen set and the other is a dodge with a dual fuel gas and propane gen set.  I may talk him out of the 6.5.  It has a huge cargo box on back with the genet that would hold a massive aux tank. that would allow that truck to run for days at full output.

I could back feed the main panel in either house with a larger cable connection.  12KW would run most everything at the hide and a good part of the house in Houston.

As for fuel, I keep all my fuel on board the trucks (diesel anyway).  I do have a few 55 gallon drums that I keep around for extra storage.  I can easily plumb or siphon fuel from either or both trucks as needed. And having that fuel on board allows me to rotate stock and keep the fuel fresh.  Between the two trucks I have 170gallons of diesel.

I don't really like the idea of having to maintain another vehicle, so I may look seriously at a trailer mounted gen set.

Don will a big extension on a drill/driver and some self drilling screws not work on the front of that fuel tank?

So I'm on the schedule to have another 90 tons of granit brought in and my driveway re surfaced. I spent a month or more of weekends replacing a culvert and grading for drainage. While we didn't get torrential rains here it was steady light rain for 6 days. It required 4wd to get out and in and now my drive is very rutted. I attempted to drag out some material from up near the shops to mix with the clay mud and it helped with traction but still deep ruts.   Did as much as I could in these wet conditions.  So i moved on to the casita, attempting to get back on schedule. Installed Simpson joist hangers and hung 2x12 on 16" center. At 12 ft span that will carry plenty of load. I will say the best tool purchase in recent memory is my palm nailer to drive the short galvanized nails into the hangers. I now need to cut X braces for the joists before laying the 1 1/8" t&g plywood subfloor.

Ok so here is an update. First: lesson learned. Never ever attempt to reuse old fencing.  It's just not worth it. Fence materials are cheap compared to the labor. I was pulling posts after fighting all that barbed wire and finally said "forget this" and went and bought new t posts ($3.89 ea).  Rented a rhino industries gas powered post driver which is worth every stinking penny. Insert post, place bottom on mark, tilt to vertical and pull the throttle trigger.  Same with trying to reuse the clip wires that hold the wire to the post. Just get new.

Pics of finished fence to come.

Then I evacuated to the hide to escape Harvey.....more about that shortly.

Longball. They get here when they get here generally. Babies make their own rules. Other than conception the only contribution I made was to ask the doc to pop her water early once the baby got 8 lbs and the wife was miserable.  She made us swear not to tell but I took the wife in and she popped her water with forceps and then we showed up at the hospital. "Water broke"!

Yeah. Reinforcements may be necessary.

I am grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ on many fronts. Our house in houston was spared the flood. We had another place to evacuate to. It also was a great time to sit with the kids (and wife) and reinforce the logic and reasoning behind being prepared and having a plan.

I would hope I would have the grace needed to praise Him should we have been trapped and our house flooded too. We could have survived a month locked in the house in houston too based on my supplies there.

The kids have teased me about my "phases". As I checked off the list of being prepared in priority order. The weapons and weapons training phase. The diesel truck phase , the freeze dried/food storage phase, the HAM radio phase, the BOL phase, the full med kit phase,  etc.

It was great to see the light bulbs in their head light up when they put all the pieces together and linked that to why we are having a mini vacation and not standing in line for rations.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Re: Thank Goodness!
« on: August 28, 2017, 09:44:13 PM »
Remember: to the victor goes the right to write history.  As far as the rest of the world is concerned the entire war was to free slaves.

The north was a industrial manufacturing economy who could not manufacturer goods at a competitive price compared to the established manufacturing capabilities of England.

The south was an agriculture economy, growing cotton and tobacco mainly.  Yes, many owned slaves and treated them horribly. We also need to remember that warring African tribes sold the vanquished males into slavery.  Blacks selling other black people into slavery.  And that's the way war had been conducted for centuries (not that makes it justifieable)

While the north was attempting to sell mainly to the citizens of the US, the south sold a great deal of its goods to Europe.

So just like the left tells you that the statues are the reason for the riots, there needed to be a cause celeb for the war so people in the north would support keeping the union whole (many of them at the time said to hell with the south, let them leave, but the north knew they needed the south's natural resources to survive).

Enter slavery as the "reason"

As for the hysteria over the confederate flag and statues.  Those that do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.  We should use these artifacts to remember the lessons we have learned, just as other nations and cultures have overcome their bad behavior and history.

We now stand as the bastion of liberty (believe it or not) in the world, despite our checkered past.  American's of all colors should be grateful and acknowledge our history.

True.  It was really a battle of economies. Slavery came in later as a means of gaining political support.

Once the north put a tarrif on manufactured goods from England and England retaliated by putting a tariff on cotton. We were doomed to war.

My house is fine. Most of my neighborhood had flooded streets but very few if any have water in their homes. Mine should be fine. It's the highest in the area.

Houston is a low lying area and we have created massive retention reservoirs and widened and deepened all the bayous in the city. The highways are designed to channel water around town.

Ed Emmett the county judge advised shelter in place.  Gov Abbott said listen to local officials.  Last time we tried to evacuate 4M people there were dozens of dead from the evacuation. The worst place to be in high water is in a car.

I've lived there all my life and we'd probably been fine. I left because I have a place to go with food water shelter generator fuel and solitude. No need to stay when you can reduce your risk by leaving well in advance. Rule of thumb is you can't plan to get away from tornados but if you get caught in an hurricane, you are a moron. They give plenty of warning.
