Without tires it probably goes 350-400lbs.   I think rust converter is your best option. No need to remove.

If I ever build another big house from scratch it will all be mini splits. They have 4+ zone mini splits driven off one compressor now.

Thanks guys. All good here. Wife drove the Dually and I drove the bus. Where we are they expect 4-6 inches of rain in the next 4 days. Yawn. I could drive to almost any one of you without stopping for fuel. Sam, I could get to the border but probably have to fuel up to get to your latitude.

Have 55 gallons of gas for the gen set. A window unit that will cool most of the house and lots of food and whiskey. It's like a mini vacation. The houston house is well insured and life goes on.

It's actually nice here now. About 85 degrees and we are sitting by the pond feeding the fish.

A sump in a diesel is a great way to recover from mixing gas in it. Unscrew the drain and refill.

So there seems to be a hurricane headed this way.  I guess this makes #5 or 6 that I've been through.  Yawn.  However, watching humanity (loosely defined) is better than at a wal mart.  No water on the shelves, lines at the gas stations.  People panicking and wanting me to close the office tomorrow. The stores are cleaned out...as in "honey! honey!  I found some hearing aid batteries!!!, but dear we don't have hearing aids....Yeah but....but...we might need them....."

Weather reporters are foaming at the mouth to get their 15 minutes of fame and cries of "hunker down" can be heard....

So, what is a tin foil hat wearing red neck to do??  96 gallons of diesel on board the dually? check.  75 gallons of diesel on board the Bus?  check.  21 gallons of diesel in the wifes SUV and 21 of gas in the van....check.  MREs. check, Rice Beans canned goods, check......what am I forgetting???/  Oh yeah.  Stopped by the liquor store and have 3.5l of Old No 7.  All good.

Will likely take off in the morning and head to the hide where I have more supplies and generator/window AC etc.  More to get away from mass stupidity than avoid rain and wind....

adios from Texas!

Tires, Wheels, and Suspension / Re: Rudness from National Tire and Wheel
« on: August 23, 2017, 09:42:15 PM »
Don, I hear you.  I think we are getting to be those cranky old men we laughed at when we were younger.  There is an apalling lack of work ethic in the younger generation.

With that said, please allow me to offer another perspective.  If there is a pattern of poor customer service the real issue lies in the corner office.  What we permit is what we promote.  Customer service is a culture and is not normally left to the random delivery and design of an individual employee.  That means that the Sr leaders have to own it.  They have to live it.  They have to communicate it relentlessly.  They must acknowledge and praise their employees that deliver great service.  They must admonish or fire those that do not.

The leaders can structure compensation plans in a way that drives business results and customer satisfaction.  How many times have you been to a restaurant or bank or other retail institution that provides a survey asking you how they did?  How likely are you to recommend them to a family or friend?  Usually that means that incentive compensation is tied to those results and not just revenue/sales.

I'm a leader in a very service oriented business and I can tell you that in an emotionally charged environment that we operate in, making people happy is a challenge even when we execute perfectly.  Yet we have industry leading satisfaction because we as leaders live it and require it of our employees and now our compensation is also tied to it as well.

If National Tire and Wheel is focused on service, you will know based on how serious they are to rectify the situation, which may be a formal apology, an explanation of how the individual was coached, or an offer of a discount on your purchase.

In any event......get off my lawn....says the cranky old guy

« on: August 21, 2017, 07:43:23 PM »
My wife ordered glasses 8 weeks ago so we had them.  I could see it from my office window and I had to leave for a meeting around maximum eclipse.  I was amazed as I looked out across the many parking garages to see hundreds of "workers" hanging out on the rooftop floor in a party like atmosphere.  Drove to my meeting and saw random crowds gathered all over the place to watch.

I suspect the lost economic input to business today would be in the billions.......

Looks good.  Make sure to put down some lime to combat the acidity of the pine needles.

Wyo, I'll have to check out the water pik.  Wonder if its cheaper?  The gas driver is very portable and requires no air or water.

JR. if she could spend every week what we spent last week i'm sure she'd make it work......

Wyo, no the 300 would be what would likely be needed for the other 2 sides.  I've seen the hydroexcavation stuff, but the concern I have is it would not be as stable as a plain driven post?

Shawn, i have to fight my wife on moving somewhere with snow.  If it were up to me itd be MT or ID.

After this last week in CA she may decide to divorce me and live on the coast......

So today, I finished the new fence out front.  With near 100 degree heat going on a month now the ground is hard as a rock.  I rented one of these

I highly, no...very highly recommend one of these if you are driving posts.  It struggled in some of the hardest rocky soils but powered on down none the less.

I learned a few lessons on my first barbed wire fence.  Never reuse old material.  Wire, fence posts, or wire ties.  Its just not worth the effort and new posts, wire and ties are fairly cheap comparatively.  Pics later when I get a phone with a camera that works.

Oh and when I go to fence the other 3 sides in the future I may buy one.  $1500-$2000 depending on the model but I'd pay that in a heartbeat to avoid driving 300 posts by hand.

Don't know what "part 135" is but the crew wouldn't have timed out had the gate personnel been able to count. On our stop in PHX we had to change planes due to mechanical issues and when they let us through passengers on before picking up the PHX to HOU passengers they screwed the count and had to go through the plane by name which kept us from pushing back before the flight crew timed out.

Bob. Very excellent points. Insurance for things that can be replaced. Lethal force for those that can't. I'm a believer in really good layers of electronic security like alarms, cameras etc. if they want my stuff that bad to defeat those layers, then I have too much stuff. My family is irreplaceable. I believe is layers of non lethal and lethal protection for them.

IMO location services on your devices and the voice operated items like Siri and Alexa are big security leaks.

Update from behind enemy lines. Yesterday went to San Diego zoo safari in Escondido. 1800 acres of really cool stuff but we were innundated with "all hunting is bad" global warming is killing us all mantras. Along with evolution caused animals to have certain traits. Good discussion points for me and the girls. We paid for a golf cart safari which go s places normally not accessible  and you can quickly end up with $700 spent on a day at the safari.

Learned what a zipper barrier is. Learned that there aren't really speed limit signs. Just keep up. Also learned that motorcycles are really advantaged and it is good etiquette to move left as motorcycles drive between lanes, which earns you a nice little two fingered gesture saying thanks. Haven't found a bad road yet so apparently really high taxes at least get you good roads.

Very nice work. Can't wait to see it in action. I'll tell you how Klose makes his pits. There are two rails along the sides and they install plates across them to act as diffuser plates. The plates get smaller and the spaces between get bigger as you move away from the box. They lay them in and get a fire burning. Then they space them to get even heat then tack them down.
