Also will be doing some truck mods for the trip. Here's first time on my truck, I have an RDS 45 gal aux tank in the bed that's why the gap between the cab and camper.

The truck doesn't even know it's there! Camper is only 1500 lbs. and one of my many planed mods is to take the bumpers off the front of camper, they're aprox.  3" deep so you don't hit the top of your bed rail. Going in their place will be a tailgate bed mat so their is something between my fuel tank and the front of the camper. That will move it 2 1/2" more forward. The camper only hangs over about 24" from the bed some of the truck campers you can get for our short box trucks are HUGE with as much overhang and tons more weight!  My eldest son works at a local fab shop, so we'll take tailgate off and come out of the trailer hitch with a angled support up to the bottom of the camper in 2 places. Also this gives me a spot to mount steps.

Well my wife got the outside washed today, looks lots better. After work today pulled couch and frame so we can get rid of the nasty carpet!
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160506_164818_075.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160506_164818_075.jpg.html)
Then I started on battery and water tank area. I want to clean all this up so I can add dual batteries and my charge controller for the solar.
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160506_172741_755.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160506_172741_755.jpg.html)
The water tank had about 2" of water left in it! Lots of scum when I dumped it out. I'll fill it with a cup of bleach/water to the top and let it set for a few days to see if I can save the tank. Younger Son coming up tonight to shoot handguns if the weather holds so no work on camper till Monday. Everyone have a good Mothers Day, out with my Mom, Dad and my family tomorrow.

Left me the bathroom! Removed toilet, then started on the carpet. What a job, they must be paid by the staple!! 1000 per board!
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160509_180401_012.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160509_180401_012.jpg.html)
Also had to remove door on fridge so I could get the board out right under the front. Wifey took door and all the racks and drawers in for a good cleaning!

General comment from a happy person:

This is the kind of thing I/we really like seeing on this site. A realistic and practical build which is well documented, and could be duplicated by just about everyone. Write-ups like this one empowers and energizes not only the viewership, but the builder as well.

I think God meant for us to work with our hands and to be good stewards of things. A slide in camper being restored  just fits with that theme. Husband and wife working together, doing something cool, and working toward a goal.
Yep, I like it!

I agree, not to mention the uber cool trip that comes at the end of such a task is a huge reward in and of itself.

Well got a little more time on the camper. Pulling the TV ant. looks like it leaked at one time. Also changing the roof vent to a MaxAir fan.I have one of these in the bedroom of my 5th wheel, they work great can be left open in the rain without extra covers. It moves a lot of air and is very quiet.
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_171212_351.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_171212_351.jpg.html)
After an hour of work finely  got the ant. and vent cover off.

Then put a bead of Dicor sealant around the hole and butyl around new trim ring. This fan comes in 3 pieces the power head, outside mount ring and inner trim
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_174811_518.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_174811_518.jpg.html)

Put the outside mount on and cover the screws and edges with the Dicor
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_174744_845.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_174744_845.jpg.html)
Brought the top up you can see the 4 screws to hold it and rubber o-ring to seal it to the mount.
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_175552_961.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_175552_961.jpg.html)
All done up top, fan in raised position it drops down level on the upper lid when closed.[forgot pic]
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_180147_772.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_180147_772.jpg.html)
Moved to the inside, there was power already to the vent so that made this part easy!
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_181054_547.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_181054_547.jpg.html)
Here is the inner trim ring. It will work in cellings up to 6" thick but mine is only about 2" so I had to trim off 4" with my Vib. mutli tool.
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_171519_583.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_171519_583.jpg.html)
All done this thing really moves the air in this small camper.
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160518_183701_358.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160518_183701_358.jpg.html)
Still have to plug the ant. hole. I'm going to put a plastic box on the roof for the solar wires and on the inside I'll do a wire mold box and trim to get to the battery.

Sure looks clean and the wife helping is a big plus.

We plan on going in July-August, so temps 70-40 range. We'll have a good comforter and the camper has a furnace to take the chill off in the morning.

Finally got a little time back on camper.
Wifey wanted another plug to rear of camper for tablet or heater when we have power.
Looking at power center found it has Main 30a then 1 20a and 2 15a breakers, 1 15 a for the existing plugs another for fridge and 20a ? So I pulled it all apart and found the 20a breaker prewired to the back but unused! Perfect for the plug I'm putting in.

Got some more time in on the camper Sat. Putting on Camp site lights on all sides. Rear will have a switch near back door, Left side Right side and front will have switches up beside the refrigerator and bed so they are close if you hear a bump in the night!
Made 90' brackets for the sides
 (http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160730_104844_294.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160730_104844_294.jpg.html)
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160730_105937_870.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160730_105937_870.jpg.html)
Then bought tube mounts for the front and back
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160730_110200_892.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160730_110200_892.jpg.html)
You can see factory seam in roof, so I used Eternabond tape to waterproof the seam and hold the wires down going back to the junction box on the roof.
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160730_111726_224.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160730_111726_224.jpg.html)
And for all you Safety Guys here's how not to make your own pick!! Roof says no weight except on roof rack 100 lbs max! That leaves me out!
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160730_122448_921.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160730_122448_921.jpg.html)
Still have to put switches in then back to rear carrier and truck wiring. No backup light on trailer plug?

That's the very wire I tapped into for my bumper reverse lights.
Debated a switch, but realized the trouble it would cause me one day.

The switches for the lights are all inside the camper, but I learned the hard way always get out and check for low hanging limbs! So while out checking campsite out the rear light switch is right at the door , I'll be able to just reach in and turn it on for additional rear flood lighting.

Well been crazy here since last post. 90 yr old father in law has been in the hospital for the last 3 weeks! Darn near lost him twice. He has hairy cell leukemia that dr's are just letting run it's course at his age nothing you can do, then came down with pneumonia in both lungs! They live 80 miles from us in Cass City so my wife was up with her mother 86 yrs taking her to hospital every day. Then he got too sick for the small town hospital and was moved to Saginaw St. Mary's.  That's 40 miles from our house, So Wifey has been staying home and going to the hospital in the morning to catch the Dr's and get any news while the other sisters bring Mom around Noon and take her back around 7pm. My Wife is there till at least 3pm every day. This has been very hard on her! And of course with 8 kids everyone has an opinion on what should be done! So everything she does around the house the boy and I have been doing! Dinners , Shopping, Mowing the grass, its been nuts! He's starting to show some improvement, very slow going. If his lungs don't start working better he won't be able to come home! On Oxygen mask during the day and bi-pap mach. at night to help him breath. It's day by day He's a tough old bird, so I'm hoping he can get strong enough to come home or it be a peaceful end to a good long life. Prayers for my wife Karen its been very hard on her.

But I had Monday off, So I didn't like the corner where po backed onto a tree and covered it with caulk. I couldn't leve it alone!
So I opened up this can of worms!
Rotten wood on inside
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160905_155643_657.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160905_155643_657.jpg.html)
Leak around bolts for lift asm
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20160905_155615_760.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20160905_155615_760.jpg.html)
Had to take canvas down roof rack off, plan is to replace bad wood and make a 3' by 4' L bracket out of 1/8" to reinforce the corner and put all back together when I get some time!

Well finally got some time back on the camper, D day is coming up fast! Started replacing rotten wood in the corner. Bought one of those kreg jigs to screw the corner together, a little glue and 2 screws and it's solid!
(http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/kampfitt/IMG_20170527_131727_536.jpg) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/kampfitt/media/IMG_20170527_131727_536.jpg.html)
Then put in this aluminum brace with 32 #10 x 3/4" screws!

Also put a Westin HDX Grill Guard on the truck, hopefully if we hit something it will stay out of the rad!! Had to take grill out to get at bumper bolts to install guard mounts and take out tow hooks and trim away some plastic for lower mounts.

+1 on the grille guard. Even smaller animals can cause a puncture which can ruin your day.

Drive report:  Took rig to work last 2 days, wife needed the Equinox for errands. Lots of wind here 25mph with gusts to 35, truck handled the camper with ease  The stable loads really work! Truck sit level with camper and no sway. Next up is storage boxes 1 between cab and camper on top of box rails over aux tank, will be 12" x 24" x 72" doors on each end. I'll put grill, lawn chairs, level blocks, and water hose here, on Drivers rear of camper overhang there's a door from inside that should open into the box if you have a long bed truck but with my setup it opens to nothing!  Going to have son build a alum. box at work that's 17" x 22" x 27" that we'll use for shoes and dirty clothes. Still have to run large charge line from alt. to box of truck with 100 amp 2 pole plug then put cord on camper to battery, this should give me good quick recharge of camper battery whenever we drive truck.

More info on the stable loads please.
I keep debating bags, 1 ton springs, etc.
These have me intrigued.

Yea I like the stableload's all mechanical, I had to take out the round plastic disk on each end of the over load. then the bottom plate bolts on thru that hole, then the top plates are put together with 2 or 3 angled plates to fill the gap so you're on the overload spring before you put any weight in the truck. They turn in or out with a 3/8th ratchet here's it out

only downside is about same price as air bags I paid $273 off amazon

Interesting setup. The camper must not be too heavy to be able to set it so far back in the bed. Folks had a 9ft camper many years ago and that thing controlled the 3/4 truck, I just kind of herded it along. Nice for hauling the boat or a week hunting but really a pain to get to and from the destination. Have a nice trip to Alaska, should be a wonderful experience.

He's putting storage in the front, and he has an aux tank.

Yea, I have an RDS 45 gal aux tank because the 26 gal won't get you far! The camper weighs less than 1500 lbs. so not very heavy, truck handles the thing fine even in the wind.

Well a little more progress d-day is coming fast! Wanted to up grade charging back to camper battery. I bought a 200 amp continuous duty relay and 100 amp fuse block, 25 ft #4 awg wire, 200 amp 2 pole plug for inside box to camper.  https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B005K2429I/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IBXV51KJPV50A&colid=4LZ4VQGEYDW5

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DNE4EI4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Installed Plug in the box

Then ran wires up to my solenoid and to fuse then Battery, relay to power up only when truck is running so I don't run truck battery down at night.

Will be working on camper end tonight.

Another solution to your battery charging could be:

https://www.waytekwire.com/item/77056/Cole-Hersee-48122-Battery-Isolator-140A-/

It allows your system to charge the camper battery without allowing your camper battery to discharge your truck battery.  Solid state solution.

Yea that would work but a little bigger to fit under the hood somewhere. Getting ready to leave this Fri after work! Lots of stuff and so little time. Large cross box above fuel tank is on and done, left rear side box is on  adds lots of storage from the inside!!  oil changed ,fuel filter changed, tires rotated, Backseat removed for more storage! built shelves with a slot in drivers side so solar panel can slide in and tools, jack, air comp. can go behind drivers seat. And in all this Wifey had her physical last week and Dr didn't like her EKG!! So off for tests this week, she had stress test on Mon that went good and has echocardiogram on Wed then get results on Thur!! Nothing like last min.!!Then hopefully  ok to go. And in all this help son move into the farmhouse finely !! I'll try to get some pics up of rig before we go.

I'll put you north of 10k.
On any given day I'm at 8700 +/-.
I have a lot of extra stuff at all times, and you'll be packing similar tool and supply wise I suspect.
Then add the camper and its goodies, you'll have a jag for sure.

Forgot what I posted we also have been in Seward and went on the Glacier and Whale watching tour. It was a 6 hour trip with a Prime Rib and Salmon dinner!! The meal was fantastic and the trip was even better!! We saw Humpback whales and Dall porpoises Stellar sea loins Killer whales sea otters and an eagle!! Then we got to the glacier and it was amazing we got to see it calving off a huge hunk of ice. The captain put the boat right up to the glacier and we could hear it cracking and popping!! Then we saw an ice burg right beside us flipping over. It was a great trip.

Before I forget you guys were right the truck was kinda heavy so I stopped at the first truck scale!! 11,240 lbs !!! 4600 lbs on the front and 6600 lbs on the rear!!! Good on the front rating but over on the rear by 600 lbs. But it handled it fine sat level with the Satble Loads on it. My wife knows how to pack every inch of the truck!! We had enough food and clothes for 3 months !(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170913/f8faf478a4d889381c19b2f7818e9e94.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170913/912c5e7bafb3dc9c23e8ea8d6257ac48.jpg)

We love the camper for this type of trip. We bought it just for Alaska, we have a 30' 5th wheel for normal vacations. I wouldn't want a tall camper saw too many of them rockin and rollin on the ruff roads! No leaks and we spent a week in the Kenai Peninsula with nothing but rain!! We're going to sell it now that the trip is over so if someone is looking for a very good camper with some good mods done I can list everything that was done and photos going to be asking $4000 can work out a deal on delivery { Road Trip!!}

Camped inEagle at the National Forest Campground . 62 miles of 1-1 1/2 lane gravel road! Took a tour of the museum and Fort Egbert. Our guide was a senior in high school with a class of 2!! She said the town still ran off 2 large generators with a small backup! They also had a community well for people that don't have wells and a phone booth in town so they can calls if they don't have a satellite phone!!

Nice pics and journey.

Man that was a nice caribou.
Hope to see one like that this winter when I'm out hunting.
I generally settle on 'ah heck this one will do', but one of these years I need to get a good one.

We had decent berries this year, found lots where I'd never seen them before.
Farther north my buddy and his wife were swimming in them like never before.

Then we ran into the Ramblin' Rose from Deadlest Catch!
Then we went to Exit Glacier Nature Center you can hike right up to the glacier here.
Nice trails and visitors center here.
Then stopped in a little town called Moose Pass they have water wheel that has been maintained by the same family for 3 generations! It's right by the road and has a working grinding stone hooked up!! Anyone can stop to use it! Only thing I had was my jackknife,it worked great.

Next while heading towards Homer went thur Nikiski and in front of the fire station was this old fire truck so I had to stop. 1944 Chevy all restored and looks like running because they took the battery out so nobody could steal it!

Heck Don. With all that room on the farm I am surprised you don't have a water/fire truck. Sure you have water on the fuel trailer but lots of water with a pump may not be a bad idea, ask Ken?

Well, if I get the whole farm (450 acres) put back together as it was in the beginning, maybe I'll have room for such things

I'd make room for that fire engine!

Dig that two piece windshield!

Bet it's weird looking through, though.

Like looking through a HUD in an aircraft. It distorts things. You see a truck going down the road for example while in a Snake. That's what reality is, but from the gunners seat you see a german troop train heading to reinforce the landing at Normandy... That little screen just wants to make you want to dive on and shoot things...

Some sort of military prismatic effect...I'm sure science has a name for it...

I noticed they get mail service, everything though bought arrived in flat rate usps boxes well that & they eat fresh roadkill I witnessed in one episode so you had to think the road had some traffic....

Yeah they have their own private road going into the property.
For all you fishermen we stopped at Anchor Point, beautiful scenery and where the locals go fishing. This is how they launch a boat Alaska style!! Check it out because of the tides, you drop your boat in the parking lot and they take it from there!

This is the first time I have ever seen a log skidder used to launch and retrieve boats! Didn't see a price for the service but they're open 6 am 7 pm every day.

Great pics! Thanks for sharing them! Love that use for a skidder....makes perfect sense given the launching location, the tides etc. Perfect for the job.

It would have to have fluid filled tires to keep from betting buoyant, but very clever!

Dunno if fluid filled tires would be needed....theyre heavy suckers. The Deere models (most of them Timberjack versions after Deere bought them) range from 36,000 lbs to 49,000 lbs. But you may be right? Just seems like air or fluid wouldn't have a huge impact?

Think about how little air it takes to float sunken things. Soviet main battle tanks get slightly buoyant driving on the bottom of rivers to the point where the current can sometimes move them. THose units, T-55/62/72 are in the 40 ton range.

Not diversionary

I just remembered how poorly they crawled on river bottoms and they were all steel. So I was comparing that to the Deere thing with its big tires getting light in the surf.

I like tracks
Not sure why
Maybe its a childhood thing or maybe because of my fun years in a M-60 A1 (JJ003W) which is probably making coral in the gulf of Mexico or serving in the Pakistani Armee now.
But, hey, I like Chief and Sarge and crushin' things. Yet to drive over a Hyundai, Kia or prius, but that day is coming!

Mattracks, I think they call them.
Make them big enough for the diesels at least.
