Build Threads / Re: Pulley's 2006 lbz
« on: April 13, 2017, 11:07:48 PM »
Been pretty busy lately and haven't had time to update but I finally got the rear speakers in. Forgot to take pictures but its much easier than the fronts and takes 10-15 minutes. The rear driver side speaker has a little rattle which could be the plastic in the door or a loose screw, I'll have to find some time to check. I was asked to pull a float in a parade the weekend after I got the truck so I figured why not.

Few days after that I clocked over 80,000 miles and as of today I'm at about 81,100

This past weekend I made a trip to Bryan, Tx to the producers feed mill to get 1 ton of feed which is about a 200 mile round trip for me but lost a tire coming out of College Station

Since I didn't have a spare I just went back on 3. It made the trailer sway a bit but not enough to make me feel unsafe doing 70 back

Whats everyone's opinions on the chrome along the side of the truck? It strikes me as a grandpa truck but I'm wanting to do a white and chrome truck this time but it is kinda growing on me. Also trying to decide on straight pipe or muffler on probably a 5 inch down pipe exhaust. I like some noise but I have been enjoying the quiet one I have now.

So Chevy makes a great truck but their door speakers are pretty lousy. So I went by Walmart and picked up these Sony speakers that my dad has been using for the last 2-3 years with zero problems because my front driver speaker rattles and the rears don't even put out sound. It's about $45 for a box of 2 and you can get a 2 year warranty on them for like $4. Door panels are pretty easy to take off but the plugs for the switches can be a little tricky to unplug, helps to have someone hold the door panel while you unplug them. Ran out of daylight before we got to the back so I'll be changing those tomorrow.

You will have to drill new holes for screws to mount the speakers, self tapping screws work well.

If you don't have one of these tools for removing plastic pins then you need to get one. I also found it works on the liner pins after I destroyed all but one

Also some useful info telling you which wires are + and -

I thought about changing it from the top but I figured it would be easier to take the liner out so I'll try from above next time. What is the recommended change interval for the fuel filter? 5k? 10k? Or should I wait until the percentage is near 0%?

So I figured I should start a build thread to keep up with what I've done and so everyone can get their fix until a certain green truck starts moving. I found this white 2006 ccsb 4x4 lbz in Mesquite, Tx just east of Dallas which was about a 200 mile drive 1 way so I got to drive it a lot right away. I drive about 90 miles a day so most the stuff I'll do for now will be for reliability and fuel economy.

List of mods planned:
Exhaust, haven't decided between 4" or 5" and if i want a down pipe back or cat back
Lift pump
Egr block/delete, leaning towards block for now
Probably pcv reroute
Efi Live probably Idaho Rob
B&W turnover gooseneck hitch
Some subwoofer setup not sure what yet, really loved the way my 2 10's in the dually sounds that fires into the floor but it takes up all under seat storage
Spray in bed liner

That's all I can come up with off the top of my head but I'll add to it as I go along.

The day I picked it up 3/24/17

Mileage after I got home

Buying my first tank of diesel, $45 for 19 gallons

They had the oil changed the day before I got it so I didn't have to worry about that but the fuel filter was at 43% so I figured it couldn't hurt to change it. The filter change was fairly easy but getting the dang wheel well liner off was a pain. Took well over 45 minutes and put me in the dark changing the filter. Pro tip: the water sensor unplugs so you can unscrew that after removing the filter, I didn't notice until I was putting the new filter on.

Finally got the booger off after destroying all the plastic body pins

Old filter before I took it off, had to use channel locks to unscrew it right above the water sensor because apparently the hulk himself screwed the last one on. Forgot to take a picture of the new one.

That was my first fuel filter change on anything but a tractor but I guess I did a good job priming the engine because it fired right up and idled for a minute before I shut it off. Figured if it had a leak it would lose prime. Didn't get to pour the fuel from the filter back into the tank as I had it in a styrofoam cup which proceeded to dissolve a hole in it and leak out. Next thing I did was get my remote key fob in the mail and program it to the truck. It has electric locks but didn't have a remote, the dealer said they were about to get one but I showed up before they could.

Bought this from amazon for about $15 and programmed it in literally 2 minutes but the dealership wanted $74 for the remote, $52 to program, and 30 minutes to an hour to program.

Nice job young man!  Congrats. Although I'd paint it red.  Jus sayin

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You know I found a red one in Houston with color matched ranch hands at 109k miles but I just couldn't bring myself to buy it haha.
I know for sure I don't have to change the oil because they had that done yesterday but the fuel filter life is at 40% so I'll pick one up Monday and attempt that. I guess I need to start a build thread for this one, I'll probably update it much more than the dually as there wasn't anything reasonable left to do to the dually.

So I ended up buying it with no regrets. I got up there and it was in pretty good condition, not much to complain about. A one owner truck from Oklahoma everything on the carfax was registration or wash/detail. There was a small dent by the rear bumper, small scratch on the tailgate they covered with their dealer sticker, and a small spot on the roof where the paint is missing which I'll get fixed before it spreads. No oil anywhere on the transfer case, trans or engine. No leaking trans lines and they also painted at least the outside of the frame and front end with undercoating. They said what was on there was already flaking off but very little rust. Drove it around and it shifted through the gears smoothly and doesn't smoke plus it's very quiet. Interior looks just as good as it did in my mom's 2006 half ton when she bought it brand new. Drove by her work and let her look and she was jealous because that was her favorite interior. My only complaint is I'll probably never be able to keep rear tires on it because they always spin when I hit the go pedal. Ultimately I'm very happy with it, had no problems driving 200 miles home and hopefully I'll get many more.

Already put my cts out the dually in there

Judging by the chrome and tool box below the rails I get the feeling that it was a vacation truck. They originally wanted 27,500 which I thought was fair but the lady filling out my loan application said she couldn't get it to book for more than 24,925 so I let them talk to her and she actually talked them down to 26,000 so I'm very appreciative of her. Everything listed seems to be what I planned to check, I don't get the feeling there is anything wrong but I got my loan set up so that I can still back out if it has problems or I can drive it home if it looks good. I also know that diesel repairs can be very costly so going with the lbz allows me to keep the dually that I can use for back up if it craps out on me. Thanks.

So I changed my mind and I'm heading to Dallas to look at a 2006 2500 ccsb 4x4 lbz with 79k miles tomorrow. Not sure of any problems I should look out for on a diesel. This will be my first time buying a diesel and if everything is good I'll be bringing it home tomorrow. http://www.autoxtremeonline.com/2006_Chevrolet_Silverado%202500HD_Mesquite_TX_267665620.veh#

Well its been a long time since I've posted but the truck is as good as sold. I've got a guy that has cash ready and already told me not to sell it to someone else. Just need to get my next truck lined up and I can sell. Currently looking for a 2012+ 2500 lml ccsb 4x4 around 70-110k miles, preferably a 15. Really hate to sell the truck, its been great for me and has only left me on the side of the road once but I can't really justify having 2 trucks at 20.

I agree the 6.0 isn't the greatest but a new truck isn't an option at the moment. Being just out of school my dad still pays my insurance on the truck so I have to get the ok from him and a supercharger would probably be my best chance.

After 2 days of heavy rain I had to travel the 2 mile muddy road today to retrieve our tractor and I have to say I am extremely impressed by the performance of the open country a/t tires. Never got stuck once even towing the 9,000 lbs load out. I've only got about 500 miles on the tires so I can't be a judge on tread wear. Overall happy with the performance and look of the tires so far.

I just took those same tires off my truck after 40k and sold em for $500 with wheels. I really liked em but wanted something bigger.

Did your tires sway when new? I could feel the weight of the truck move from side to side when turning and assumed it was the tires breaking in.

I've been trying to get the full life out of my tires before replacing but last Thursday I was down a 2 mile dirt road in a hay field when it suddenly came down hard rain. After barely making it out of the mud pit of a road I decided I needed some all-terrains ASAP. So I went with the Toyo Open Country AT 2 in size 235/85/16. I put about 50 miles on them and they ride well and are not any louder than my highway tires I had before. They look nice and more aggressive than the pictures I saw.

Earlier today I was attaching the hay rake to the tractor when my thumb was crushed breaking the nail and ripping a good chunk of meat. Doctor wanted to pull the broken part of the nail off and stich it up but the supervisor told her no. It's currently wrapped so that it can heal on its own. I ask if yall could pray that it heals quickly and properly. Thanks. If yall want to see it I'll post a picture of it.

An offering of advice.  Your truck will pull heavy loads better if you have a majority of the weight over the trailer axle.

The small one isn't very heavy but we didn't have anything but a short chain at the time so we had to pull it to the front but the big one was parked over the axles.

Put the truck to work these past weeks hauling the tractors to and from the hay fields.

The small tractor started having problems so we had to resort to our big one to finish. Total weight is somewhere between 13k-14k. For a gasser I thought it handled it well enough.

I'm sure you have thought of this but how hard will it be to get into the back of the truck quickly in an emergency situation?

I'd pass, my truck's long enough and I don't need 2 extra tires to worry about. Plus the auto disconnect takes about the same time it would take to unhitch my gooseneck.

For now I'm going to see what the future holds before deciding on swap. In meantime I need to make a trip to Lufkin to discount tire to rotate the tires one last time and discuss tire prices. Still open to a/t or m/t suggestions. Kinda leaning towards nitto terra grapplers. Also discovered this morning I have a small coolant leak. Hopefully when I get out of school next week I can drop it off at the shop and have them leak check it while I run calls with my dad/fix up the property.

So in my research I've discovered that I will be breaking federal regulations and going against the EPA by doing this swap. I would have to get the EPA to certify my truck which is a costly and long process, one guy asked for a list of what the vehicle has to go through to be certified and received a 400 page book of testing that has to be done. It can pass state inspection but still be breaking federal and EPA regulations anyway I go about it. I for one don't want to become involved with the EPA so I'm beginning to think it'll be in my best interest to just by a diesel truck and save myself all the hassle. Was a cool idea though.

I definitely know the difference between want and need and this is a want for sure. I planned to wait and hope I get a job at the company my dad is with so I would have a company vehicle to drive while this one is down. Also need to do more research because I won't know the first place to start on an engine swap. Not sure I would want a standard trans.

I did some searching and ATS has a stage 5 47RH for a little under 7k with a 5 year/500,000 mile warranty. Not sure if that's overpriced or if I even need a stage 5 but I want the truck to have the power to haul whatever I hook it up to and not destroy something. This is all uncharted territory for me. Problem with buying local is I'm in a small town and there are not any transmission shops around that I know of.

Seems more reasonable than buying a new truck and I wanted to keep this truck anyways though I'm sure my dad will try to talk me out of it. But I know you guys want to see something like this ;D
