Talking with western Dave on the phone and this video came up. Promised I’d post it so here it is. Shortly after this video was taken we agreed on a bike helmet as sufficient safety precautions. By “agreed” I mean she told me to put her bike helmet on so I did.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Lb7 fuel issue
« on: January 02, 2021, 10:35:36 PM »
Back in the summer I bought a 2004 LB7 from a coworker. 192k miles now and had new injectors fall of 2018 at roughly 185k miles (reputable, local, diesel shop). When I bought it there was a barely noticeable surge at idle. Fast forward to the morning following the first sub freezing night of the year and I had some white smoke on startup that lasted until I took off. No smoke after its warm or at stoplights like my other LB7 when the injectors went out. Throughout that first cold snap the surge got worse and it started surging while coasting to a stop. I ran a dose of HotShot secret though it with my usual XDP additive then changed the fuel filter and the symptoms went away. Today when changing oil I drained more than 2.5 gallons out of it. I having trouble understanding how it made enough oil to be obvious when draining it but I haven't had any white smoke for over a week now. Does it sound to y'all like a fpr problem or are the new injectors taking a dump? Trying to prepare myself before I have a chance to get the balance rates checked.

Bikes Motorcycles, S x S's, Tractors, and Mowers / Time for an upgrade
« on: October 11, 2018, 09:12:36 PM »
So last week I accidentally sold my 2009 700XP Polaris Ranger. I immediately regretted that decision but there’s nothing I can do about it now. It’s at a new home in Georgia and a good man is using it to take his 12 year old son to hunting spots they couldn’t previously get to.

My criteria for the new machine is:
•Seating for 3 at a minimum (myself, HH6, and a car seat. 4-6 seats is even better.
•The ability to lock both front a rear differentials
•Minimum of 10” factory ground clearance. With aftermarket wheels and tires my last machine had 12” and would occasionally scrape on rocks. If I have to add a small lift and tires that’s no problem.
•Under $9,500

Right now it looks like I am limited to a Ranger 570 crew. I like the Honda Pioneer but I keep reading about people having heat issues in the cab. The Kawasaki Mule Pro-fxt and Honda Pioneer 1000-5 both have fold up rear seats but they also both get $12,500+ on the used market.

Firearms / Suppressed 22 options?
« on: August 11, 2018, 11:15:43 PM »
Now that my suppressor is out of jail I’m looking for a factory threaded, 22 bolt gun to play around with and to use for dispatching critters in the yard. I have several 22 rifles already but non that I am willing to have cut on.

Place local to me has the Ruger American compact with threaded barrel on sale for $279. I also saw a Savage for $239. What else should I be looking at that is comparable to those two?

A few days ago my wife sent me a picture of an apron for little girls that has a bunch of individual pockets for putting eggs in. I know that woman well as well as where this conversation is headed so I says to her "that's cute, too bad we don't have chickens". She replies with, "ok, I already bought it though, so I guess Heidi can just find something else to put in her apron". Naturally I put my boots on and did the only thing could do at that point. Went and bought a bunch of pullets.

It'll be some time before these are laying eggs. Luckily for me, at only 5 months old it'll be a while before the little one is ready for that apron. If I'm being perfectly honest though, I am looking forward to having our own chickens. It's like a little slice of my childhood brought back to me as an adult and I know good and well there'll be lessons for littles to learn from them.

Classifieds / American Made Jeans for Christmas 2017 donation
« on: December 03, 2017, 03:41:13 PM »
Just this morning, my wife ran across 3 pairs of All American Clothing Company Revelation jeans in my closet that I cannot wear. I seem to have eaten myself into a 36” waist (with sidearm) and these are size 35x36. I was planning on giving them away but before I do I’d like to try something else.

I’ll ship them to a member on this site for free if they agree to make a donation to the single mother we’re helping out this year. No set donation amount, $25, $50, $100, doesn’t matter, just whatever your heart compels you to give. These jeans are made of 100% USA sourced material and every thread assembled and sewn here in the United States. I have several pairs in different styles and they are much better pants than all the Chinese made junk I’ve tried. They are comfortable and wear like iron. The only knock I have against them is that they are a little tighter in the thigh than I like. If you enjoy squats and deadlifts you may feel the same, however, if you think God made pants so we don’t have to go to the gym on leg day then these will be perfect.

Parenting / When infants can’t be soothed.
« on: November 13, 2017, 09:14:33 PM »
Our 8 week old baby has developed a case of the can’t help it’s. Unfortunately it started just after I left for work. She’s fed, has a clean/dry diaper and has had a couple different outfits on to rule out itchy clothes and tags. Wife has tried nursing instead of bottle and that didn’t work either. These looks and sounds like mad/painful crying. Wife took her for a ride in the car and as long as my she was driving the baby slept. As soon as they walked in the door she started crying again. The baby has been holding her No. 2s in for days and get fussy after 48 hours or so. Poor thing holds it in until she can’t anymore then has major blowouts. I don’t think that’s the case this time as the blowout was last night.

What are the next steps? Anything you’ve tried that worked when they just can’t seem stop crying?

Build Threads / 89 K1500 Refresh
« on: November 09, 2017, 01:16:18 PM »
Like most of my machines, my 89 Chevrolet is in serious need of some TLC. It spent the first 22 years of its life in Missouri being covered in road salt before moving down south so its a rust bucket. The truck itself is pretty bare bones. 350, 4x4, 6" lift and 35s is about the extent of the fancy stuff. SM465 manual and no power locks, windows or other do dads.

We have an 8 week old that I keep on my off days from the fire dept and I am a tight wad so whatever improvements are made to this thing will take a while.

So, with these tires the truck is 75" wide. The 16' tandem trailer my back yard is 73.5" wide. Once again, I'm about an inch and a half short.

Waiting on the rollback this morning:

First order of business, Brakes. Last December while bleeding the brake lines I had a blow out above the fuel tank. Other than in the parking lot of a trustworthy mechanic, sitting in the driveway is about the best place I can think of to blow a brake line. I ordered a complete new set of stainless lines from Inline Tube and they arrived about 3 days later. That is not a job I can tackle myself at the moment so I am farming it out to my neighbor, along with a steering gearbox replacement. The truck has always had a slight whine coming from the power steering pump but I've burned through 3 power steering pumps in the last 5k miles (7 years). Hopefully the steering box will fix that problem.

As soon as I get it back I have a Sunforce solar charger waiting to keep the Exxide AGM topped off.

Initial List:
Stainless Brake Lines Done
Power Steering Gearbox On standby for now
Windshield Washer Motor Done
Replace/Upgrade Shocks Bilstein 5100 Done
Upgrade Steering stabilizer
A/C (this is Alabama afterall)

I also need to figure out what to do about a rear bumper/hitch option. The previous owner buggered up the mounting holes for the one that is on it so it gets out of whack every so often and has to be adjusted. I dont plan on towing much with this truck but I want the option should the need arise.

Firearms / Suppressors
« on: October 06, 2017, 12:56:36 PM »
This morning I’ve fallen victim to silencershop’s marketing and have a renewed interest in a suppressor (also shopping for my Christmas present).

What I want is something I can use on hunting rifles during deer season then swap over to a different tool in the off season. Last year I was set on a Surefire socom762 mini but a dealer convinced me to wait a while. I hadn’t given it much more thought until I got an email from silencershop this morning.

The email led me to this page. That seems like a lot of suppressor for the money. https://www.silencershop.com/silencers/7-62mm-rifle/rugged-suppressors-razor-7-62.html?redirect_mongo_id=59d794be1c0f5e00351fcd71&utm_source=Springbot&utm_medium=Web&utm_campaign=Email#content_tab_review_tabbed

I purchased a used 2009 Polaris Ranger 700XP in October of 2016. My dad bought it in 2009 with just a few hours on it and for the next 7 years it was his most used piece of machinery. The original owner was a Polaris employee and he added the roof, windshield, wheels, and tires before it left the dealership.

In October of 2015 he traded it for a 2016 Kawasaki Mule Pro-FX.

Someone bought the Ranger the day after dad traded it in and kept it for a year, almost to the day. They only put 15 hours on it and decided it wasn't what they needed so I headed to Arkansas and brought it home. My bad luck started almost immediately.

Once home, I gave it a good once over before putting it to work in the foothills of the Appalachians.

Years of farm use had the radiator gunked full of dust and seed. Removing the front bumper gives better access to both the radiator and the front differential fill plug.

Since Photobucket doesn't work for image hosting anymore I'm trying to figure out other websites. I've successfully posted pictures to other forums by copying and pasting a link from an app (Imgur or Flickr) but that same process doesn't work here on RealMan. Any ideas?

Last night I started pulling up old carpet in preparation for hardwood floor install. What I found underneath was a subfloor of pressboard/particle board. In addition to being junk it has also been damaged by either water, pets, of a combination of both. The roof suffered damage from the 2011 tornadoes (Alabama) and was replaced as a result. We've had no water leaks since moving in April of 2014. I don't build houses for a living but I'm going to take some tools, a rudimentary knowledge of construction, and a friend or two and tackle this myself. For now I have to decide what to replace this with after I get it tore up. Pretty much everyone on this forum knows more about this that I do so any suggestions are welcome.

Also, what is everyone using to host pictures now that photobucket isn't an option? I don't want to cost Chief a bunch of money by loading them straight to Tapatalk.

Most Favored Companies / Quantum Fuel Systems

Finally tracked down the problem with my Polaris Ranger (actually a guy named jungleman did). It turned out that my fuel pump was shot. Jungleman suggested I give these guys a try instead of spending $500+ at a Polaris dealship.

After I submitted my order for their complete kit ($80) I got a phone call where an apologetic gentleman explained that they were out of regulators and said he would send it out as soon as possible. He expected it to be 1-2 weeks. Since he said 1-2 I expected 3-4 weeks and just told him to hold the whole order until the regulator arrived so they wouldn't be wasting money with two shipments. To my surprise, and in less time than he quoted me, I received the complete kit. There were handwritten instructions on my paperwork explaining that this kit needed to be shipped asap when the regulator arrived. The more personal phone call, in leu of an email, and handwritten instructions make me feel they were interested in taking care of their customers, instead of just getting my money and moving on to the next guy while I sat on the back burner.

I while back I borrowed (which I hate doing) one of dad's trailers to bring my antique John Deere home. Dad always said that if you borrow something it should be returned in better shape that when it left so... I'll try to stick to that.

I don't know how long dad has owned this trailer. Probably 25 years or so.

My plan is to get everything clean, hit it with a wire wheel, then coat it with rust converter. If I have the opportunity before the trip back home I may run him some new lights. If not, maybe he and I can knock that out while I'm there. I'm not an expert at anything other than causing trouble so all suggestions will be graciously considered.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Generac GP8000E
« on: February 22, 2017, 01:23:06 PM »
The wife and I were in Costco a few days ago and ran across this floor model for $600. Regular price was $900 and MSRP of $1,000. I know very little about generators so I am wondering if this one is worth keeping for $600 or if I should return it and invest that $600 into something else. Mainly, we want to be able to run 2 freezers and the refrigerator in the event of a power outage. Replacing the meat in those freezers would cost more than we paid for the generator so we desperately needed something.

Firearms / Remington Model Seven
« on: February 10, 2017, 09:24:14 AM »
I have a .243 Model Seven compact I bought several years ago. The stock is too short for me but the gun shoots well. Last night I found a take off, 18" 308 Model Seven barrel for $50 so I bought it. My plan was to have the barrel threaded for a suppressor and install it on my action (I will have it blueprinted when the barrel is off), then drop the whole thing in a full sized stock. Then I got to thinking, why not just get a full size stock and thread the 243 barrel? With Barnes TTSX or Speer Grand Slam bullets and good shot placement I think it is adequate for whitetail and hogs. On top of that I would be taking off a known good barrel, for one that may or may not shoot. I guess this is a question of what I need vs what my perceived needs are. Thoughts, opinions or concerns? I would love to hear them.

Edit: It also just occurred to me that I am already stocked in components to reload .243. That is not the case for .308. Although I could find surplus brass cheaper for the .308, those savings would be offset somewhat by the increased bullet costs.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Thoughts on selling a new truck.
« on: February 01, 2017, 03:20:14 PM »
If I could I would like to ramble on about my truck situation and get some input from the members here.

Since early 2010 I have owned a 2004 extended cab Duramax. Its a good truck and has been paid off for a few years but I've been looking for a newer 4 door diesel for some time now. Even though I've been looking for another diesel, earlier this month I ran across a deal on a new Ram Rebel that I couldn't pass up. 13 days after I bought it I found out some new expenses will be headed our way soon (a good kind of expenses). We are very blessed that we can keep the truck and still be fine with the new expenses but... I don't want to. Excluding our house, we have been debt free for a few years now and I really enjoyed that freedom.

The new truck, although nice, is not what I have been looking for and, not what I really need (actual need vs perceived need is a topic for another day). Pulling my small 10' trailer with a Polaris Ranger on it my last trip averaged 9.8mpg. Although that should improve as it gets broken in it still won't be anywhere near the mileage I get with my Duramax. Where I currently sit is: I am slightly disappointed in and making payments on a new, 4 door, 1/2 ton gas truck with 1,450 miles on it that gets 10mpg pulling my Polaris. Because of the fuel mileage and it being so nice, I kept my 2004 diesel and have been driving it most everywhere. Because of an error on Chrysler's part, I should be able to sell the new Ram and break even, maybe even a little ahead. If I had a newer diesel I would feel comfortable selling my 2004 which would also help offset the cost of that truck. Does that make sense to anyone other than me or am I losing my mind?

Because we all like pictures

I also have this truck. It is the first vehicle I ever owned so it isn't going anywhere.

D.O.T. / First antelope hunt
« on: January 03, 2017, 09:47:41 PM »
Maybe I'm missing a section but I couldn't find anywhere else to put this. My wife and I decided that we would take our fathers on a western hunt this fall (if we can draw tags). We have decided to try Wyoming antelope first. This way, if we suck at it, we won't be out the small fortune it takes to hunt elk. None of us need to kill trophy animals, we just want to provide a good experience for two great men. So, my question for y'all that have done this is; what are some things you wish you knew before you went on this kind of hunt? Which methods did you use to research/find areas to hunt? In general, any information you have will be greatly appreciated.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / 20 year old Fourtrax 4x4
« on: September 16, 2016, 04:06:52 PM »
I've finally started some long overdue parts replacement on my first and only four wheeler and need to trouble you good folks for some advice. A little background: When I was 12yo dad and I were working around 450 head of cattle. During the spring when dad was working day and night spreading fertilizer it was my responsibility to feed and make sure all of our cattle were healthy and accounted for. I would ride the school bus home, get our farm truck, load it up with feed and anything else I might need, then head off to work. We leased several farms miles apart and my only way of getting there was by 90' Chevrolet. One day, as I was passing by my school our librarian saw me driving that beat up Silverado. My goodness at the storm that ensued. County sheriff's deputies, highway patrol, school principle, and friends' parents trying to scoop me up before the rest caught me. Long story short, I needed another mode of transportation and this Honda fit the bill perfectly. It was used and abused by myself and my nephews for a decade and a half before being parked in a shed where it stayed until last December. After removing the racks and fenders this is what I had.

After pressure washing.

I knew for sure the front wheel bearing where shot so that's where I started. I've been reading through pages and pages of The Square D build and I like the idea of weatherproofing parts as I handle them. Might as well right if it's already apart right?

What kind of cleaner, primer, coating, etc... should I start acquiring?

I've been lurking and reading here for quite some time (since the Square D build). I recently joined because there is a lot of info here, and the site seems to be filled with good people.

I am a firefighter and EMT transplanted from a middle of nowhere Missouri farm to the Deep South. I hunt, fish, garden, and shoot just about everything from clays to pistols. I don't have nearly the knowledge or talent most here do but it's fun to learn. Thanks for letting me be a part of your group.

General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / Rusted rocker panels
« on: July 06, 2016, 01:03:43 PM »
It seems as though you men know a lot about body work so I would like to trouble you for some advice. My 2004 LB7 and I migrated to down south from Missouri, where's there's a lot of road salt. Naturally, my rocker panels are starting to rust through on both sides. I took it to a body shop (I have zero knowledge of body work) last week and got some bad news. $1,100-1,200 to patch the panels, spray with rust converter, and hope for the best or $4,500-5,000 to replace both complete rocker panels and fix it right. It's been a great truck but with 183,000 miles I can't convince myself to spend the $5k, especially since we are talking about having kids and it is an extended cab. So, I think what I'll have to do is let them patch the spots that need it and put rust converter everywhere they can reach. They said in the past they've had decent success with drilling some small holes and spraying converter inside the panel with a fog tip they made. What do y'all think? Is there another option I'm not considering that I should look into? Like I said, I know nothing about body work.
