So this project is slowly being brought back out of the cobwebs. Tonight I pulled the transfer case, probably pull the transmission tomorrow if I can find the time.

My question for all of you is this:  should I do a rebuild on the transfer case (NP208) while I have it out?  If so, is there a recommended source for a rebuild kit?  It’ll be my first time, but I should be able to figure it out with Google and YouTube.

Thoughts?

There is only one room upstairs and that is currently the boys bedroom. I built them at a low angle and it is extremely easy to walk up, but I get what you are saying. I don’t plan on carrying children up there too far into the future.

I think

Finally got the stairs(post #61) about finished. Stained and fully installed, just need to do a coat of poly on them to protect them a little bit.   I’m happy with how they turned out. No squeaks yet and feel solid under foot.

Having a better half who has been over an OB on several occasions just don’t do the home birth method or out of hospital method. Do your due diligence in finding a great facility to deliver with good results and a capable nicu should the need arrive that you need those services.

We have medicine and highly trained staff in many facilities, this isn’t the early 1900’s. If things do go sideways then being at the right place with the right people can make all the difference of the outcome.
While I agree with your sentiment about medicine and highly trained staff as a general rule, why is pregnancy treated as a short term disease instead of a natural process that the female body is designed to handle?  We have done hospital vaginal births, c-sections, and two vaginal births after c-section at the hospital, one vbac in the hospital parking lot and 6 home births attended by a midwife. The experience and comfort level of a home irth compared to hospital dealing with ll the people and a strange environment are night and day. Being able to lay down with my wife and our new child in our own bed within an hour of their births was a priceless experience.

I get that everyone and everyone’s circumstances are different, and some people have risk factors that would make an attended hospital birth the best option, however, I think that making a wholesale declaration that anything other than a board certified OB attended “operation” is unsafe or I’ll advised rubs me the wrong way.  Yes, you need to plan for the possibility of complications and be aware of any risks, but it is a viable option for some people.

Sorry, getting off my soapbox now.

Talk about coincidence, that’s the same one my son bought, 95 4Runner with the 3.0 3vze engine unit I think. He’s been doing little things to make it run right and easier to drive.  Now he ordered a new ac compressor and other odds and ends. We’ll see how it goes.   If you do an LS swap, I think he will definitely follow along. He isn’t happy with the paltry power of the engine.

I would for sure glue the rebar into the slab. Blocks or just a stem wall would work. Either way seal the outside for water if there is a concern. Of course a little grading could solve that.

Yes, the blocks would need to mortared. Wall get cement filled, fences can go every few or where the rebar is.
My water problems aren’t from grade around the building, when it was built they poured outside driveway/parking pad on the outside at the exact same level as the garage slab. So when it rains, the water sits against the outside wall and can/has puddles against the sill plate.

I figured they would need to be mortared, I guess that was me looking for a shortcut.

As for demo, I was thinking what Don put above, getting a larger loader and mowing it down, burning what will and then burying the rest. The majority of the wiring is in conduit on the surface, so it shouldn’t be too bad to get out. I just thought of another wrinkle I’ll have to figure out. All the power from the house comes from the garage first. There’s a massive power distribution panel in there from when the machine shop was in production. This unit is about 7.5 ft tall.

I want to see what his special big monster tree destroyer could do to the existing garage ;)  I’ve built a couple of block walls before and can set block with concrete, just wasn’t sure with something like this if it needed to be mortared together. I’ll check out some YouTube videos and see what the concerns is.  I think the longest part of deconstruction will be pulling out all of the existing wiring/conduit /electrical boxes for salvage or scrap.  There are I think 10 different breaker panels and about 16 different disconnects around the garage. Not to mention a couple of hundred feet of black iron pipe used for both propane and compressed air lines. I’m getting tired just thinking of it.

Would the blocks need to be mortared together?  Or would the concrete inside the voids take care of that.

That’s a great video. And if you take it a step further, how much will the federal government spend on those 1000000 immigrants in our country, and I’m talking on legal fees, enforcement, welfare, etc. how much more food could that same amount do in their home countries?  How many people could be supported with $1,000,000 here?  Let’s lowball the amount needed to support a family of four and say $40000.  So for $1,000,000, that supports 100 people at most, if they were all healthy, working lawful four person families. You take that same $1,000,000 to Africa and how many people can you provide for?  If they are really making under $2 per day, then at $750 per year per person, you could support 1333 people and their quality of life would be greatly improved and they could make improvements I. Their home countries as that money would then Flow to merchants who could hire people who could then support their families and so on and so on. But unfortunately too many people don’t think that way.

I don’t think permit issues will come up. Over I think 10 acres in Kentucky and you get a farm exemption and don’t have to worry about permits is my understanding. We’re sitting on 63.6, so I can bury the inspector if he comes a snooping.

Here’s the current floor plan of the garage, im thinking of just turning it into a rectangle down the middle with a half truss section over the part on the left of the picture. It would cover nearly the entire existing footprint and would be a lot more useable space than is currently there with all the posts and short wall sections scattered about

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

14
Easy solution: Tear down and build new.

You can try and use the current foundation, but I say that is unnecessary.

If you can use the floor, then great. Set posts where they are needed by setting in the ground or on a pillar. Although some will disagree, the builders in our areas much prefer setting posts directly into the ground.

I have a one-phone call guy, Corey Jones. He builds some of the best pole barns in the area. He lives here and has a crew he has had for years. During COVID, when people were laying off and finding excuses for everything, he continued to work and even found enough work that his guys were making overtime every week. He built my barn, you're welcome to come look.

He uses two truss companies, which are custom and local. Once he gives them measurements, they can make it. This is not hard, it's just a decision. Kill that old structure and burn it. Let me know if you want to look at mine. I'll be down there today and maybe tomorrow.
That is definitely an option. I think the slab/foundation will stay, it is 6 inches thick and in good enough shape.  No matter which path I choose, I think we will probably add 6 inch concrete “walls” around the perimeter to help with keeping water out, the original sill plates were placed at ground level and around half the garage there is concrete at the same level outside as well, making the sill plates sit in water in heavy rains.

Not a standard footprint, I would have to do some some work to get it to fit right, but I think it would be doable. (This from the Air Force guy who is certifiable).

So, as the topic title states, my wife and I have been talking about projects that need to be done around the house. One of those topics is getting the garage set up the way we want so it will be useable for us. An idea she put forth was tearing down the old structure and putting up a clear span metal building with a higher ceiling and single slope roof.  The current garage is about 6000 sq ft, fully drywalled walls and ceiling and metal roofed. It has just under 8 ft ceilings in most of it. The drywall on the ceiling is in really rough shape. There was little to no maintenance done on it before we bought it and there were raccoons living above the ceiling in the insulation. So there is raccoon poop and urine all throughout. There is also some rot in the sill plates on the walls. Not to mention some of the roof has started to leak along the east side. The entire thing is very low slope and I think that is part of the problem.

What do you think of the idea of replacing it completely with a new metal building utilizing the existing slab/foundation?  I’m sure there might be a need to put in new footers for posts. My wife likes the idea of not having all the existing posts that are in the garage. It was expanded multiple times to get to where itnis today. It would give me ceiling height for a lift and anything else we want to do in the future.

I know this has been rambling, but wanted to throw it out there so I can have all the possible arguments/discussion points.

I know you said that the steps were on deck, next to be installed. I would consider putting the Carli suspension items in before the steps. You will gain a few more inches of workspace particularly with the radius arm drop bracket. You have to clamp a drilling fixture to the chassis and get a drill in there between the frame and rocker area. I had to work around my fixed HDX steps and it would have been nice to have the extra room.
Hmmm...
I think what Duane is saying is that if you get a six inch lift installed first, the step installation would be a piece of cake.

Over the past couple of days, replaced alternators in both odysseys(2005 & 2011), then replaced plugs and front pads in the 2011.   Then yesterday the power steering was acting up in the 2004 Chevy Express.  They just don’t build things to last anymore.  I mean, the 2011 Odyssey only has 288000 miles, the 2005 has a slightly more respectable 336000 and the Express only has about 515000.  It’s like they try to force you to buy new by making things fall apart.

Oh well, guess I’ll just live with the hand I’m dealt.

We have thought about it. Lorria and I don’t ever plan on moving from this location. If we do, we will be able to sell and come out on top. With eleven children, we want to be the favorite grand parents that all the little ones want to come visit and stay with.

Here’s the finished roof:

They made sure the through the roof penetrations wouldn’t leak. Looks like more like a cap on a pressure vessel than a roof vent.

Lots of updates I need to put in here, I’ll follow with those later. The roof is getting done as I type this. Found a metal roof company up in Ohio who were willing and able to do what I needed. I’m getting a mechanically locked standing seam metal roof over four inches of rigid foam insulation. They repaired all the decking and the fascia/gutter board prior to putting down ice and water shield over the entire deck. Around the edges, they built it up with two layers of osb sandwiched between a 2x6 on top and bottom. This will give a good solid perimeter around the foam and a solid attachment point for the roofing and trim at the edge. It took 2 16 ft dump trailers of about 10000 pounds each to get rid of the old asphalt shingle roofing that was on there.

Nice looking truck, Don.  I really like that color, kind of an Air Force blue.

If you want to test it out towing the loaded down equipment trailer, you could bring it up to the house and get the back field ready for seeding and test out your tree demolished in the woods. Just a thought ;)
Thanks Dave!
It is kinda an Air Force Blue.
And
I actually come from Air Force stock, did you know?
Dad flew B-17's and then some cargo stuff when it was the Army Air Corps. He never wore the blue uniform, but those guys were Air Force pilots. And that's where I come from.
At least I made the turn back to Armee green (Except for the truck)
So, what do you need done at the property?
Got the back field rough leveled last year, I’m going to get a lot of the larger rocks and roots picked up and smooth it out a little more before I seed it all for grass. I need to just send the kids out and tell them they can’t come back in until they clear a hundred pounds a piece of rock from the yard.

That is actually some real high dollar wall paper/fabric that the previous owner had put up. We are keeping it for now as an accent wall. It is a Japanese themed gold pattern, his wife was Japanese.  He was a big deal here and in Lexington, on the who’s who lost, had a big machine shop(hence my 6000 sqft garage) with contracts all over the place. Wish I had held out for a Rubicon model when I bought my Jeep.  Running on the frozen snow going uphill would be so much easier with the front lockers.

Adding a selectable up front wouldn’t be a huge undertaking……
OK, talk to me goose.

Why do I need selectable hubs? Thinking about it, I can't come up with a single reason. I toss it in 4WD Hi at any speed, then right back out again if necessary (I'm imagining...)
I think he was talking to Bob about putting a selectable locker in the front of his Jeep.  I could be wrong, but since I’m Air Force and you are Army, I’m almost assuredly right.
