Could be the hose or the solenoid also. Hard to chase sometimes.

it seems everything emissions related started to fail on this truck when it hit 120K. This will be the 3rd check engine light visit since we got it.

When the funds present themselves find a Harbor Freight discount coupon and buy a scan tool ($100) then pull the codes and the guys here can help you diagnose the issue. Most things aren’t that hard to fix & with plenty of you tube videos between those & that we can save you some money if you want to do the work. Just a thought.

Dave, another easy idea. Go to HD, buy unistrut or that angle iron with holes already in it (they use it for garage door opener mounts) & buy some nuts to fit ubolts. Drill holes in unistrut for one side of ubolt then push it thru & nut on top & bottom. Fasten unistrut to wall, same idea with angle with holes in it.
That’s not a bad idea.   Only downside I see is it’s nuts n bolts vs me playing with the welder that’s been in my garage for six months.

I like strength & if that welder has been sitting for six months the nuts might be stronger than your welding abilities? Maybe not too but just a thought.....

I usually reference metalsdeopt for material sizes.  I find I can generally find steel about 25% less then there listed prices.

Also see if there is a Metal Supermarket near you Dave, they normally beat metalsdepot for me on pricing & no shipping no costs.

Stewie, I don’t care what has been fixed on a 6.0L ford I would not take one if you gave it to me & that’s after having towed with an 2004 flawlessly pulling a 16k enclosed trailer for over 150K before it started to try & put me in the poor house. Buyer beware

I went to H.F. and got spent about $100 and put a tool kit together for my truck.  I kinda like the screw drivers because you can hammer on them, wrench them and the tips are magnetic.

for sockets, I spent a bit more and got a good set of craftsmans (not pictured)
Might want to think twice about Craftsman... I’ve heard reports of Sears not honoring the lifetime warranty, plus the condition Sears is in...  Husky or Kobalt are pretty good.

Ken claimed they gave him issues, however I just took back a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter I blew out using on a 3/8 butterfly impact (I have impact ones it was a dumb mistake on my part) & a 3/8” universal that I had broke. They replaced both with no questions last Saturday.

I did run into a slight issue, the inside between the two pieces that run lengthwise down the axle doesn't give me much room to fit my large welding nozzle in there. If I had a better option (well less expensive and quick) I would use a stick welder. My welder can convert & do it but I don't want to screw around with setting it up and I'm sure I would have to spend some money on something to do so. I'll manage with getting my big gun in there (yeah my gun is too big, what she told me anyhow!  ). The reality is it doesn't need a lot of weld on the inside and the outside will get a bit more now. In the end it will be ok but a welding rod in there would be the easiest and in long run best option if anyone is looking at doing this modification in the future.

OK, so this sitting here and no action in my way on my bench was starting to annoy me. So today I clamped the truss in place and leveled up the passengers side only. You start on this side and get the 4 pieces underneath in place first.

Then I tacked all of it on the outside first both sides.

The housing was next, no preheat or special precautions (it's a tack if it breaks or cracks tack it again which I did in one spot).

So I let that cool for ten minutes and referenced the instructions. I then located the tab and bracket that get slipped under the top piece on drivers side. Note I did not weld the top piece in place at this point it is merely for keeping things aligned.

Now we have a problem, apparently this gusset on the pinion side of the housing needs clearance to allow a bracket to slip into place.

For reference I marked the casting gusset with a chalk stick

I then started by drilling a roughly 3/8" hole in the back corner. I try to drill holes in the corners whenever possible. Reason being it is harder for a crack to start in a rounded corner versus a 90 degree straight inside corner.

I cleaned it up with a cutoff wheel to each side of the hole in a 90 degree fashion (sorry forgot to grab pic of it)

So here is the bracket now clearance and fitting

Bracket and tab in under the top plate drivers side.

For being some KY windage I sure did drill that vent hole in the right spot  :likebutton: doesn't get much better than that......

Then I had to clean up to go to an 8th grade track meet, Shelby my middle daughter is neck and neck with another girl for fastest 100M sprinter. She came home the other night after beating her at practice and claims "I'm the fastest girl in school!" To which my reply went so was your aunt............  different subject though!

With 60 weeks left of work, I started the “purge” tossing stuff from my desk from mid 90’s - came across the funny files and had a few good laughs!

Now at 7th graders track practice - I think they’re learning the triple jump in the rain!

So the big question is will you stay there in IL for retirement or relocate somewhere else?

So mid morning I ended up in the principles office. For the record if you say “opt out” they immediately assume it is for testing purposes. So after explaining it was not we had a civil discussion. Which revolved around Islam & throughout I received the politically correct responses from the principle. After some back and forth she suggested that we have Samantha not participate in the Islam only section to which I agreed. I had made the comment it was debatable whether it was even a religion and her tell was when she closed her eyes but then continued the political correct avenue.

I had to then send the principle an email afterwards explaining my expectations to which I did.

The teacher sent me an email telling me she tried to call but could not reach me. She reaffirmed Samantha will not be participating in the Islam discussions and she would discreetly discuss this with her. Samantha also will not have any grades deducted as a result.

It also was confirmed this is a school district curriculum which I had commented on whether this was a wise choice given the age of the students and the confusing nature in general of the Koran.

So it went as expected from my viewpoint. They don’t like it but are accommodating to every little thing under the sun and have to be here as well I assume.

Lastly, on the reply email to the teacher I thanked her for her understanding and appreciate what all teachers do noting I was not trying to make her job harder in the process.

I agree whole heartedly with your position Bear. Couple background things, first if she had not had some first hand experience with this culture (she did at age 10 when we moved here into apartments in north Denver) & had I not already explained (what I felt appropriate for her age) then I might be less likely to intercede. I agree the teacher & administration are most likely ignorant of the subject. When have you ever heard “man love Thursday” on msm? The majority of the public have no clue, that goes for female genital mutilation as well even though it has become a larger problem right here in the US.

So there’s that angle I am looking at and then the aspect of her flat out stating her faith. Of my three she or her oldest sister Baylee have always been the most grounded in their faith. There is no question in her heart about Jesus. So when she states to me I have no need to delve into that other religion then I respect her decision.

5933
Just trying to make sure you are fully armed

 :beercheers: Thanks guys!

5934
Well, I was hoping I didn’t have to go down the rabbit hole that far..... you never know though

5935
Ken, actually if I asked which I won’t then I could easily get a dozen parents to join. I’m guessing once I go in then a few more will as well.

We’re far enough from boulder & Denver that it is very diverse. Several of my middle daughters dads are preachers here locally and the church we go to that many others do as well has 4 locations here on the front range. Our Christmas service had a total of 34,000 plus in attendance (all campuses combined) & we raised over $400k at Christmas for our needy family fund. So we’re not all heathens here I guess.

5936
Ok, so she came home today and we discussed her options. I see two, first being she can opt out of it and have to take another assignment (writing a paper or something). The second option I gave her was to inform her better on what Islam is & isn’t and let her annoy the teacher to death with questions or statements. Apparently the teacher regurgitated some crap about Islam being the religion of peace. So Sam stated she just wanted the first option, she didn’t care about these other religions and saw no need to digest that crap.

So tomorrow I get to go visit the school office (I’m good in this regard as I spent way too many hours there during my education) & opt her out of this nonsense. Depending on how it goes I may question them on their logic of having this a part of the curriculum too. I am well versed enough on this crap stain of a religion to make some liberal very uncomfortable if need be.

5937
I must have missed the day we had to read about the five top religions & read from their holy books.

Probably just a coincidence too that they thought doing this to the kids at the age of 13 was the perfect time to be informing them of this crap.

5938
So Samantha my 13 year old just sent me an email telling me they were being taught in school about the top 5 religions. She asked if I could opt her out as she does not care to read the Koran.

So I’ll update this post as it progresses however my reply went something like this.

“Sure, what do I need to do? Also for starters Islam is not a religion but a political ideology for the record.”

This ought to go well.......

And everything you fix now makes it worth more when you upgrade "if you upgrade"

Dave not sure how your new job is structured (if you’re a contractor etc? Self employed?) however fixing equipment is 100% write off year you do it. Buying a new vehicle is not the same on taxes.

Dave, didn’t you just put a bunch of money in the transmission etc? Other than the paint the rest of that stuff isn’t too hard to replace.

When I had my 2000 dually painted I had it done in sections. Such as one time it went in and had one of the fiberglass fenders repaired & the tailgate. Another time it went in & had the hood refinished. I did it as I made money to have the work done. I owned the truck outright and the drivetrain was solid, so the rest was little stuff.

Don, technically I “was” a diesel guy having owned three different Ford 1 tons & oversaw half a dozen Ford & Dodge trucks pulling steel around. I’d love to have another it just doesn’t fit the bill currently & unfortunately I might add.

Two companies I used for parts with good experience were ATS (located 20 mins from me now btw) & AFE. So I pulled up ATS website and low and behold they sell AFE ( don’t think I purchased AFE stuff from them in the past so I was surprised a bit ). Then I just found one I thought fit the bill well.  I have no experience with that converter though frankly. I also have no experience with Chevy Diesels so there are far more people on here light years ahead of me in that regard. Just my 2 cents and instinct of one which I would look hard at if I were you.

Thank you NRA, you’re so wonderful & brilliant as to bite the hand that feeds you. For the record, I don’t own one, never fired one nor ever had the urge to buy one. However, to think all the people who legally paid good money for a firearm accessory now have to dispose of their hard earned money / property with no grandfather clause is complete B.S.
