Precisely!  A simple clevis pin would do the trick, and I bet Don has a bunch of those.

Don, you may want to think about making that support leg adjustable so if you are parked on uneven terrain you can adjust it accordingly. Might even want to make the aircraft cables somewhat adjustable so you can let out, or take up, some slack to get the table semi-level so your water stays in the wash basin for when you're bwushin' yo' toof.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome! Yes, quite a few PNW'ers in here, we're not all leftist hippies I swear!

welcome ryan, good to see you made it over.  if things go right, I will be your neighbor down in McMinnville.

My parents are in Newberg, we'll have to meet up sometime!

Just to throw one more option out there, eliminating the "handle in the way" scenario, why not get a tire iron or extra trailer scissor jack bar like this< http://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Redline/BAL-24033.html and weld a lug nut to the center of the crank? not sure how difficult it would be given the weight of the spare assembly and reducing leverage, but it would potentially be a faster way down at least.

Now that's an even better idea! Use the same size lugnut as the wheels and now you only have one tool to lug around (see what I did there?) ;)

Though, I'm not sure the bar Tate found would be strong enough to break the lugs on those wheels though. What do you have those torqued to, 60-jigatons? Or the German equivalent - "Gud'n'tite"?

Before the Automated Safety Hitch (ASH), there was the Hitch Buddy, Trailer Toad, and others I'm sure. All resemble the semi truck dollies mentioned previously, but the ASH has three attachment points and requires a custom hitch. It won't be easy to swap it amongst your trucks.

Hitch-buddy.com appears to be dead - I read something about them going out of business due to legal problems, possibly an accident?

There looks to be a lot of debate on whether some of these things are legal and/or safe. It certainly seems like a elegant solution to a specific problem (Excursion to haul family, trucks with toppers, etc).

Any update from the manufacturer Don?

Hey Don, Long time lurker, first time SquareD poster...

I had a thought regarding the spare tire winch. Suppose your drill battery is dead: Sure you could pull the water cans out and use the crank, but what about mounting the winch 180* so you throw open the rear gate and crank the tire down from the backside of the winch. No need to fuss with a drill/extension, just flip a couple gate latches to get to it. May save precious time in a hairy situation - especially if the drill battery is dead and you have to go to "plan 2" and pull the water cans and dig out the handle (which I'm sure will be conveniently located in an easy to access location in the rear of the bed).

Now, I suppose you could also fabricate something so the handle could be used front or back. One negative I see to this is that the gate would be free to sway as you're raising/lowering that mammoth tire - maybe a pin to lock the gate open at a 45* and 90* angle - like positive stops on a miter saw.

My fabrication skill are non-existent compared to yours, so take my $.02 as you will.  :)

Hello Real men!
I'm a DuramaxForum (rparlee) transplant that has been following the Square-D build since its inception. I've been 'lurking' for months since Don moved everything on that build over here. I, sadly, was not around for the TacTopper, Tacoma, TacGator or some of those other Don projects...  ;)

I'm an IT Systems engineer by day, and a jack-of-all-trades in my free time. At 17 years old, I plowed my '95 Ranger through a huge puddle while offroading, hydrolocked the engine (busted a rod, bent another) and took it all apart and put it back together and sold it for $300 more than what I bought the truck for (minus all the parts for the repair).

I enjoy working with my hands - I've built a garage, helped my uncle build their house, done a lot of landscaping/yard care growing up, if it involves power tools or building something, I generally am interested in it.

I'm also a family man with a wife, two daughters (6 and 19 months), a dog and two cats - one cat is like "red dog" and is a major pain and has now been relegated to permanent quarters OUTSIDE (wouldn't stop peeing on the dog's bed).

I have an '06 GMC 3500 CCLB LBZ and can't imagine ever selling it. I'd love to do a Duraburb swap, or even a 6BT swap in an older 'burb someday. All my uncles are into cars one way or another - Tom rebuilds and manufactures parts for Model A Fords, Steve is a fine cabinet and furniture craftsman and is into Alfa Romeo's and Mike is a pump engineer (think large sewage pumps) has an MG in his garage that has been a 'project' for 20 years... So, I guess that is where I get my interest in cars, carpentry and engineering from.

Oh and Don, for pete's sake:

START IT UP!
