There is a guy based out of Tampa, FL that does all kinds of tuning with LS engines. Has a pretty popular youtoob channel with a bunch of hijinks, but seems to know his stuff.

He put a blower on his wife’s Escalade... then blew it up (sorta).

Fasterproms is the channel.

It's the hole he drilled for the A/C power cord into the electrical compartment...

Swapped back to the original OEM struts on the wife’s car. Pair #2 had a bad bearings so they sent new ones. Pair #3 would pop when accelerating and turning left. Put the originals back on, quiet as a mouse.

That’s what I get for buying cheapos off Amazon. OEM from here out.

I think the answer to your question Dave is 'both'. Maybe have 2 or 3 doors on the long side for parking single vehicles/trailers/access to a lift, but also a single door on each short end for a pull through when you want the whole rig to remain connected and covered -- depending on how much room you have.

I’d stick to OEM... lifetime warranty is great until you’re having to rip everything off to replace them.

Do you need new LCAs for the lift, or something else?

Bought a random orbital buffer/polisher and am polishing up the wife’s rig to get it ready to sell. Years of washing with hard water has taken its toll on the windows. Look brand new now.

Look at the reflection of the shop light.

Sunroofs are a little more stubborn, so getting some special glass polishing pads that will hopefully knock those water spots off.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Re: Durmax AC problem
« on: September 12, 2019, 07:26:19 PM »
First question I would ask is what temp do you consider "not cold enough" at idle? Out here right now, we're lucky to get them in the high 50's at an idle, with the blower set on high.

The blower module would just prevent it from blowing air out the vents.
If it's blowing, but just blows less cold (and there's actually an issue), then it's either building too much pressure (radiator fins plugged, bad fan clutch, etc.), too much oil in the system (did you make sure the compressor didn't come pre-charged with oil?), or the condenser is restricted internally. I assume the compressor stays engaged, at idle, when it quits cooling? How much r134 did you charge it with? Did you pull a decent vacuum (at least 25in)?  There are other things, but I listed the most common.

Why is it I have the feeling Ken is about to say I told you so?

AT 100 deg outside temp and a 5 minute cool down at idle with the compressor clutch engaged the temp set at 68 on both sides with the fan on high the air out of the vents is reading 89 deg.

The compressor came dry per O'Reilly's and I turned it upside down and let it sit for 30 minutes and no oil came out(it is a Murray) I put 7.1 ounces of oil (amount I got from the Chevy dealership/ O'Reilly's  told me 7.7) spinning the compressor 30 times in each direction to prevent hydro lock. I pulled a vacuum of 29 inches for 4 hours and it held it for 2 hours. I put in 2.7 pounds per a cheap set of digital scales.

I'll try cleaning out the cooling stack and check the fan clutch. I have a bad feeling that those micro tubes may have gotten me

I fear you overcharged the system as the owners manual calls for 1.6 lbs, or 25.6 oz.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Re: AC Compressor Replacement
« on: September 12, 2019, 01:16:35 AM »
I replaced everything but the lines on my wife’s Acadia last year. Bought a $35 manifold gauge set, $60 vacuum pump, and $4.88 cans of r134 from Walmart.

The drier is likely in the condenser (the part sandwiched in front of the radiator) and the txv or expansion valve/orifice tube could be in the line at a joint, or a little square block thing between the line and evaporator. On the Acadia, this was right on the firewall but I replaced the evaporator too which meant pulling the entire dash apart, so it didn’t really matter.

When you charge, make sure you purge the yellow line on your gauge set after you’ve connected the r134 otherwise you’ll introduce some air that you just sucked out of the system with the vac pump (the red and blue lines should theoretically be air-free since you just pulled a vacuum). Wear gloves as it can freeze your skin.

I just replaced a schrader valve on my duramax last month and performed the same steps with one difference... I paid to have the Acadia evacuated, but the truck “had a leak” ;). Both are working great.

NOOOOOOOoooooooo! Don't cross the streams! Bad stuff happens when you cross the streams!

Yeah, don't cross streams when your hub bolts are loose, you'll get water in the diff and ruin those perfectly fine 4.88's!  :knucklehead:

Thanks Tate, but even with that it seems like I'd probably still have to get engineering.

I reached out to 4 or 5 other engineers today and I'll see what they say.

Yeah, my county has a prescriptive plan for gable-style patio covers that specs a 4x12 beam span up to 12' - my span is 13'6" (house to post). I was always planning to use 6x12 and 6x6 material, and in my highly-logical mind I would think that the additional 18" span would be fine if it is stepped up to a 6x12, but the county wants to see calculations for anything over their prescriptive plan. Then factor in lateral loads and uplift for wind (which we get a bit of) and snow load, I guess I can see their concern...

Here is what the county has:
https://sww-icc.org/Documents/2015%20IRC%20Details/R801-5A_Patio_cover-Gable_Style.pdf

$1700 is just a hard pill to swallow, plus $700 for the permit.

And I prefer to not make it any smaller because I already have holes in my patio for the posts that I formed in when the patio was poured... kind of got the cart before the horse I guess.

Oh, and here is what I’ve drawn up for those that are interested.

Hey, is anyone on here a structural engineer? Looking to add on a patio cover and I’m told that I need engineered plans because of my beam span of 13’6”. Got a quote from a local guy of $1700 to do all the calcs, draw plans, etc and I’m wondering if that’s normal?
