Layers 2 & 3 to aid in vibration, resonance, and road noise blockage.

Then after a couple days of looking and deliberating, wife and I guy the dash layout figured and gauges on their way!

And we had a really cool visitor! Yea, He’s venomous and most likely somewhere still on our property but gone enough to not bother anyone!

Turner, I’m not sure. Corners are worn pretty good on them but all in all they had a good 1/4” or more of tread across center. Plan was to keep them on until Sept. however we have two camping weekends coming up this summer and it will get loaded with gear and kids so not risking a blow out on used tires. I had noticed prior to buying it that at some point I believe it had a rear drivers blowout as inner fender liner (plastic) is busted up. I had these tires on a 3/4 ton D rated once and lost it coming across Cinci bridge on i75, was not much fun.....

Also worth noting I think these tires have been on there for a few years.

Along with age, it’s not a small vehicle so I suppose there’s a wee bit difference in how the tires live. But still disappointed in these overall, certainly won’t buy them if and when we put tires on it.

Ok, so other than dragging my small trailer around I really haven’t had time to do any upgrades to it. Tires (cooper ATP E rated) should be here this week and after hauling 16 pieces of 16” sq pavers in back if it this morning I’ve decided the old tires will be going sooner than later. Haven’t checked but believe they are D rated at best judging sidewalls this morning on those well worn wranglers (not a fan of those tires btw).

I’ve done further research and banks kit is a waste of money on a v10. I may find a tuner and do the motor and trans with slight tow tune. In addition I checked and this came with 4.30 gears and limited slip rear. Seriously considering a grizzly locker for the rear in this though.

Which wrangler is on there currently? We have the all terrain adventure on our Toyota, came on the truck. Less than 25k on them and we’re down one out of the original 5 because of a hole that could not be plugged/patched. And another one has a slow leak. And they are well over half way gone. Figuring if we keep it and move it with us in January, it will need new tires before it gets on a boat.

When it’s all done inside, I think it’ll be a reasonbly “quiet” ride. Comfortable is what we’re going for and I believe we will achieve that.

Not sure what to compare it to, maybe a dodge 6.7 or better. I guess I need to go ride in some other diesels. I’ll get y’all a decibel reading when doors and windows are on.

It will be getting fancified on the interior one of these next few months, headliner, carpet and such. So we’re thinking that will help as well.

Ok, so with so much right now needing completion the boss came out and installed the first step of sound deadening while I worked on other pieces. We used a product called fatmat, and there is a better method to sound deaden but the guy closed up shop so we went with this as the first step.

Beginning of the day.

Here she has over half done and working on the driver side.

Laying down the final piece.

Finished product.

While she was working on that, one of the items needing addressed was the gas pedal/cable connection hole. So I turned a round hole into a square hole.

FINALLY, got this piece finished. It ain’t perfect, but I’ve never done all this paint work before. Probably could have got it even better, but this tiny little project has enough hours into it.

So in the theme of saving money I bought a polisher from harbor fraught, their variable speed 7” drill master. WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK!

It’s variable alright, so much so that it never holds constant speed and sometimes doesn’t even function. Thankfully I just picked it up a couple days ago, so it is going back.  DO NOT BUY DRILL MASTER POLISHER!

So more sanding more painting.... probably not surprised I know. However, progress!

Of course new gun, and then hi temp activator, bound to have runs. I was using mid temp up until today, because that’s what I had.

I will get this cleaned up tomorrow evening and then polished.

Then finally we can make some real progress of re assembling the interior with sound deaden install and ac box install. I wanted this bit of paint done before sound deaden to keep the mess off it. Glad i waited for all this to be finished, it was never not a messy day.

And just because...

Ok, if at first you fail, ask for pointers and try again.

The critter spray gun you see above works, no denying that. It however had a lot of waste due to overspray. I made it work, for the most part, just slowly.

Then came today, and I was talking with Ken, and I thank you sir for the pointers, he suggested I try a low voc spray gun, so
I suggested the 10$ harbor fraught, and purchased it because it would probably spray better no matter what than the critter.

It did, significantly. As in the critter cost WAY MORE than it’s worth due to over spray.

In trying to put another layer of clear on tonight with the 10$ spray gun, I had a mishap and wasted well over half of the clear I had left, literally by it just flowing out of the gun.... I made a huge mistake and missed installing the spring to keep the valve closed.

Once properly fixed and the little bit of clear still in the tank, I went to spraying. 5 minutes later I had the inside of the cab that is getting paint, cleared for a HEAVY third time, and started on the back then ran out.

Unfortunate and mildly expensive learning experience, but learning has occurred none the less.

Ken, thank you for suggesting to try a different spray gun for my tiny compressor.

Sorry for the long post but hopefully someone else can learn from my mistakes.

After taking with a local-ish hot weather car repairman painter builder guy who supposedly has googly eyes for large unstable kankles, I went ahead and laid down the clear as thick as my gun would allow. Got two coats down going to let it cure and then do some smoothing (out of clear anyways).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

why so mean to ken?

I never mentioned any names....

But since Ken did ask about my poor mans spray gun...

Everything I’ve sprayed so far has been with this 30$ siphon gun with 1-1.5” spray pattern.

Picked up a 10$ gun from harbor fraught I’m going to try in hopes it’ll cover better, question is whether or not our compressor will operate it... eh I’ve wasted more money on lesser items so what’s the harm.

Only thing I would mention is that you shouldn't sand between base and clear, if at all possible.

I don’t think I have a way around it if I want it to be smooth. The section that was really textured with primer ended up textured with basecoat. Was going to hit it with something like 8-1200 in hopes to knock down the texture. It’s not orange peel, it’s that crappy too far away maybe drying from the gun spray stuff. Like a dust, or possibly an effect of the instant humidity when I started.

Should I just clear 7 coats and polish that smooth?

Ok, got a little further today, sanded it down this morning before we left for Tucson lightly with 120 to knock down the big stuff.... should have used 220.

Then came back this afternoon and everything got 320 treatment.

Then ate dinner and went back out for some color... 2qts and I’m sure plenty wasted... we have this.

This is pre sand of the base and pre clear coat. That will happen tomorrow. And this little piece will be done. Then only a roof, four doors, two fenders, and a hood to strip DTM, sand, prime, sand, base coat, sand, clear coat, buff and polish. I now understand why good paints shops charge a lot, Ive only done what, maybe an 1/8th of the total amount, I’ve easily got 40 hours into that probably lots more.

Lessons for others that might be thinking about doing this:

- best possible prep will save time in the long run.
-Proper equipment saves even more time. I’m using less than hobbyist tools, but getting it done.
-Mix less up front so you don’t end up wasting, especially base coat as it can be quickly mixed and sprayed without sanding in between coats, it’ll Save you money.
-start by stripping everything, vs working in sections, will save you time by reducing feathering and matching at a later date. Also would allow you to spray the excess you may have foolish mixed.... speaking from experience

Been too long since I sprayed but might be air mixture. Need to be picking up more liquid.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I wondered about this while spraying as I never could seem to get it dialed in. First coat went pretty well but still just not quite right. Oh well it had to be sanded for base coat anyways, just now it’s a little more than originally planned.

I should still end up with two solid coats of primer, plus the DTM under that.

Paint is the order of the day, hopefully will get it finished up tomorrow. It’s probably too hot to be spraying but..... oh well.  Primer didn’t turn out very good but I’ll just smooth it out

Sanded everything, put a tiny pinch of bondo on some welds, taped the seams and then filled them with SEM, put truck back in garage and went to town with a qt of primer.

You can see the texture... pretty sure the paint was coming out basically dry or so I think. Too much activator maybe? I don’t know not a paint specialist. It certainly didn’t come out as nice as the first set of DTM primer or the firewall.

Do the alpine slide they have there, it’s good fun!

Snake river has good fishing. And I believe white water rafting. Paint brush canyon (I think it’s called) nice hike, popular but get up about 2.5 miles and everybody stops going. There’s a boat shuttle that can take you across Jenny lake.

I’ve got some trail books of the area if you want more information about hiking.

Yellowstone is a couple hour drive into the park. There’s a sandwich shop that Has a small liquor store with a great liquor selection and good prices, Creekside Market. There’s a vodka that can be purchased in that area that is by far my favorite vodka, highwater is what it’s called. Wyoming Whiskey is hit or miss but you may want to give it a try.
Thanks Turner. Any info on some moderate trails for the family would be helpful. It’s bad enough I have to carry all their stuff but if the trail is too bad then I’d have to carry them too

Correction, it is called Cascade Canyon. The whole trail to where it branches is 4.5 miles so a total of 9 if you did the whole out and back and used the shuttle to get across Jenny lake.

Around Jenny lake there is a trail that if walked the entire lake it’s about 4 miles.

Inspiration point is in this area too. Which has good long distance views towards the west.

Further into the park is Jackson Lake, parts of which are nothing but tourists but I believe the colter bay marina has boats and such that can be rented.

Not sure what you have in mind for activities.

Don’t know when your going but temperatures could be much cooler than what your expecting. Dad saw snow/sleet north east of the Tetons last Friday.

the auto craft shop is not the best, but it does have lifts and all kinds of stuff for people to do this kind of work to their own vehicles without having to pay crazy high shop prices.  just a heads up, you will have to take their little class on shop safety before they will let you use anything.

More paint prep.... took a wire wheel to all the hard to reach spots, then sanded everything to 120grit.

Half way through the 120, can you tell which side :)

Fully 120 grit sanded.

Then finished out the night by putting down some direct to metal 2k stuff. I like how it sprays and the end result.

I probably should have done some body work on the rear of the cab, but opted not to in hopes to save a few hours of work right now.

So when Dodge moved production down mexico way back in the late 80's they supposedly changed the steel they made the truck out of.  Thinner and stronger was the story.  Every late 80's early 90'd dodge truck/RC i have taken apart has look like this in some degree, this was the floor under the driver, when I did the conversion I just made a plate and reinforced the whole area.

Makes me wonder what wife’s RC looks like. Our “road” to hardball is terrible which makes me think these issues would be exacerbated.

Eh who knows. Most likely just going to go into a Connex box and wait to be drive again.

First we removed the rear window.

Then slathered the aircraft stripper all over things.

Ended up close to ready for direct to metal primer, and other layers of paint.

Outside needs some more cleaning but the majority of the paint has been removed.

Also filled the radiator and drove it around the lot a small amount. It goes and stops well.

So we cleaned the cab out, again. So we can get the sound deadening installed and do some interior painting.

We also cut a hole so we can install the twin stick shifter handle jig thing.

Very little to report. Been working on filling orders which puts the truck off.

Found out today we are moving for work, so this needs to be done pronto.

Installed the seats and brackets to see how that all worked out, which it did pretty well. Maybe a little tall but nothing you can fix with a little cut and weld.

Then I attached all the coolant hoses and bypassed the heater core because it is not yet installed.

Made a bracket to replace the lost one for the dash so I can get the AC unit installed.

This is my bench vice

And found the transmission is leaking severely.

That’s where we are currently.

Here you all go DOTing my thread up with talk about luxury Redneck items such as aftermarket AC units. Thinking this needs its own thread, where are the mods I’m outraged!

We’re just looking out for your best interest in case the ferd AC does die.

I had a 6.0 excursion in Afghanistan as my people mover on Kandahar.... it died towards the end of my trip and I left with it at the DYNCORP mechanics. It had been there for a couple months by the time I left with no sign of being repaired.

I'll find a home for it...you know im looking.....

I'm kinda dense.  I want a modern chassis with a old school body dropped on.  Maybe even A/C.....

MAYBE AC? You must be crazier than I am to think you could live where you live without it!!! Several quality aftermarket AC options to make it work in basically anything.

Never owned a 1911, shot a few different ones. But in the end when we were shopping wife liked the Beretta PX4 best. So we bought those. She did not like glock at all, SW m&p was ok, and she liked the ruger Sr9, but ultimately the px4 won out. I carried mine for about 4 years before we picked up a pair of sw shields. Have probably 2-3000 rds through mine, no significant repeat of failure to fires. Greatest thing, only ended up costing 300$ after rebates, store deals and such.
