Those rocker panels are terrible, and they are a part of that weak unit body.

That's when I had my idea.

Cut off the whole rocker panel front to back. Leave the outward face of the "Frame" piece. Get a section of 2 X 4 X .125" rectangle steel and weld it in there so that it protrudes past the door bottoms.

You just fixed the rust, added a real frame, built in rock rails, and added a step.

You could cover the top with no-slip and have a tall step, or cut it out to lower the step slightly, or forget about a stop altogether.

You could bevel the front and back to match wheel well contours.

Not that is a good idea!

I realize I'm about a month behind but...

I'm pretty sure that the Cherokee has a full frame, the Grand Cherokee has a uni-body…

My bro-in-law removed his rockers on his rock-climbing Blazer altogether for clearance, you can do that with a full-frame vehicle.

Crank windows and manual everything are the way to go! fewer electromechanical components to fail.

If you do get it and want to part with the winch, let me know.  I got talked into letting my last 8274 go with the last CJ7 I sold about 14 years ago. Regretted it ever since...

I have read that ride improves if you replace the shocks on this lift kit but I'm not to that point.  The ride isn't kidney-damaging at this point, just noticeably stiffer than stock.

I'll try dropping the tire air pressure a bit and see what that does for us.

Does that Warn 8274 come with it?  Best winch ever made, IMO.

Great Lakes Offroad is the go-to source for the parts you need to make this the axle right for your build.  Bullet-proof (literally) differential covers, spring perches, shock mounts and yoke guards.  GLO has it all and it is top quality.  They also have the disk-brake kits you are looking for.  My brother-in-law introduced me to GLO several years back.  The group he runs with out of Wyoming and Colorado wheel very hard; Trail runs, regional mud-drags and Moab.  GLO diff covers are on all of their rides.

I will be using GLO parts to build and fit a 14 bolt to my Power wagon.

At $20,000, the one in Eugene is on the top end of the daily driver price range.  Its nice too though.

I got a line going on the first one. Looks like a clean cali truck with a clear DIESEL title, 3/4 ton. Only bad is it has a tailgate and a red interior. He is already dropped it some but this maybe good for a body swap.

Thoughts??

That's a good one. Already has a 14bolt rear axle in it.

Disassembly and Cleaning.  There was a lot of scale and dirt buildup in the float bowls and the power-valve  was seized in the bore.

Off came the carburetor, a Rochester Quadrajet.  It has been a few years since I rebuilt a carb, so I found a guy on youtube who went through the entire process step by step.  He actually rebuilt the same Mopar model Q-jet that I had.

My immediate objective was to get it up and running and operable at least.  Out went the old radiator, in went new belts and hoses. No more coolant leaks.

Can't you run propane in accompaniment the diesel you're planning on running? Doesn't it cause you to have better mileage out of the diesel? That's what I've heard, as there is a shop up here advertising something along those lines.

I don't know.  I'll look into it at some point.

It looks like the axle shafts need to be pulled, then the hub and then the studs driven out to get to the drum.  Its a later model housing, with the ribbing on the center section.  I have a 14B axle similar to that one but it has factory disks.

Ultimately, I decided I didn't want to use propane or the gas engine for that matter.  The propane system went to a good home, Sean, aka stlaser.  Not sure what his plans are for it.  Sean?

She likes the way it looks and would rather drive a truck or SUV than a car.  Misses the softer ride a little but has been wanting bigger tires since she got the jeep.  She is tall enough to handle getting in and out OK.  We may put on rock rails with steps.  Her mom struggles a little getting in and out.

By the time I added in all the extra parts to my "Complete" Pro Comp lift kit, I could have purchased an actual Complete kit from a better manufacturer.

So how are the shocks in that kit? And how were the stock ones?

The ride is now considerably more harsh than stock.  No denying that.

I would have to say before the lift, the Jeep rode like a car, now it rides like a truck.

Visual inspection during the install revealed that there had been regular contact between the bump-stop and the axle prior to the lift kit installation.  Than's not the case anymore.

Drives ya nuts when you get something "complete" and you have to figure out how to make "direct bolt on" fit in some indirect manner!  Especially when you have a fixed amount of time to dedicate to the Vehicle being down and it becomes double or triple!

Exactly.  The beloved Jeep is my wife's daily-driver and she was not happy that it was down for three days instead of one.  Of course, MY FAULT !!!

I installed the Rubicon Express adjustable trac-bar the next day and drove the jeep to my local Tire Discounters.

Caster would not come in.  After a discussion with their lead tech and a quick internet search, we determined that I also needed a pair of adjustable upper or lower control arms.  Again, Pro Comp fails to deliver on their "Complete" lift kit.

Summit Racing was able to get a pair of Rubicon Express adjustable LCA's to me by 1000hrs the next day.

Pro-Comp's "Complete" 2-1/2 inch kit includes a rear axle trac-bar relocation bracket.  No provisions to re-locate the front axle trac-bar are included with the kit.  Once everything is bolted in, settled and torqued, The front axle is off-set towards the driver's side an inch to an inch and a half.

I called Pro-Comp's tech line and after a few transfers got one of the guys in engineering.  He told me he: "Never heard of that happening before.  Everything should bolt in and align just fine…"

"Well it doesn't.  I'm going to have to add an adjustable front axle trac-bar in order to center the axle."

"Well, gee, we do sell those you know."

"You guys advertise this as a COMPLETE KIT.  If I have to order a trac-bar in addition, it isn't exactly COMPLETE now, is it?"

Fortunately, Summit Racing was able to get an adjustable trac-bar to me by 1000 hrs the next day.  I did not buy a Pro Comp trac-bar.  I will not purchase Pro Comp again.

My wife's 2012 Jeep JK Wrangler.  We bought it new and it is factory stock with the exception of a M.O.R.E. dead pedal.  No Rubicon or Sahara package, just the Sport model with the ugly steel wheels and the stock tires.  I was determined to wear out the tires before we put on a lift kit, new wheels and tires.

Good to hear things are moving along!

A few years back, Don and I looked at a local, similar vintage 3/4 or 1ton Chevy Crewcab that the owner had swapped a 6bt into.  Boxing and reinforcement are a must even on the 3/4 and 1-ton frames.  You really need a front cross-member also.  This guy didn't do any of that.

At idle, when you cycled the steering, the frame would twist and flex more than an inch!

Good score on the FF 14bolt!

At this point, I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do with the truck.  No real mission statement.  I explored the possibility of running it on propane or dual-fuel.  I even went so far as to pick up a purpose-built DOT approved (HA-HA!) 35 gallon tank setup I found in Indiana on Craigslist.  The propane system had been installed on an F-150 that was a fleet vehicle for some utility company out of Texas.  After an ECU malfunction, the 2nd owner of the F-150 decided to pull the propane setup and just run on gas.  I bought the system mainly for the nice in-bed tank setup , lines and fuel-door refill port.

While the truck did start when I first looked at it in Indianapolis, it started hard and the carburetor float bowls had to be filled or I'm sure it would have overheated the starter or run the battery down.  We never brought it up to full operating temperature as it was started inside a large building and the exhaust gasses were building up pretty fast in the enclosed space.  I figured it probably needed a good basic tune-up and maybe a carburetor rebuild kit.  No big deal, I can do that.

Once the roll-back truck unloaded it and departed, I took my son for a short ride in it down our 1/2 mile long driveway.  By the time we got back, steam was rolling out of the hood.  I found several pinhole leaks that were misting out of the radiator, creating a fog of steam and coolant.  Great.  New radiator also.  Interestingly enough, the radiator was original to the truck as were the heater hoses and clamps.

Well i stumbled upon this gem today on craigslist...i immediately thought of this build.

http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/4775238031.html

It looks pretty nice.  Its on an early 1990's chassis, 12v cummins, 5-speed. He wants $20,000.  Here are some pics of it in case the link goes dead:

Not wanting to trust that old HF 1500 lb engine hoist leveler, I opted for their biggest one today. Here it is:

I have one of those hanging on my tool-room wall…

It hasn't been used since I dropped the engine into the Cobra.  I should have sent it with the engine hoist.

489
Scored a 14 bolt FF with looks like 4.11s (matches the dana 60) for just $120 yesterday.

Excellent!

If you bring over all the ferrous metal parts; case, yokes, covers etc, I can strip and de-rust them in my electrolytic rust removal tank...

Those decals look much better...

The trailer is made in clintonville, wi (close to bobby).  A base model is something like 7k, and models with bells and whistles can go up to 20k.  I check out their website and you have to call for pricing, but did some searching and found those numbers.

Exactly.
