Eaton 5HP 2 stage Air Compressor 60 Gallon Tank Build
« on: November 25, 2015, 10:42:01 PM »
So long story short I had a nice Eaton compressor that had a million man hours on it. When I sold business and had auctions I sold the compressor rather than relocate it to CO. You have to draw the line somewhere and my best equipment was kept and the well used stuff & I parted ways. So fast forward several months and I'm now tired of not having an air compressor. I found a like new 60 gallon tank on CL local with a 200psi rating for a song and a dance. So once acquiring a new shop I called up Eaton. Couple weeks later these components showed up on the back of a semi on a small skid.

Correct, did this last go around and saved enough thought I'd try it again.

Well, that will be plenty for a home shop.

This Eaton V4 thing I have is total overkill, but running like a champ...and quiet, well like as in mud tire quiet...

Correct, last unit was a tad small so after speaking with the owner (Tony is it?). We decided to bump up to this small 2 stage unit. I'll post pics of the tank and frame or partial frame here in next day or so. If I did my ciphering correctly this unit should squeeze under that first loft I built. I plan n using sound deadening material on 2 sides of it against wall and bottom of loft to help absorb or muffle the sound.

220 lbs....yikes!

You know Ken in my mid 20's I used to load corporate 14 bolt axles by myself into the bed on my f350, no joke. I unbolted that from the pallet yesterday & went to pick it up off the floor to put it on the bench. It was a bit awkward w/ that large pulley wanting to spin & I stopped. Said to myself I know I can do this but why when the motor hoist is sitting right there. Definitely slower but my back doesn't hurt either....

Nice project. Mine is fairly quiet but will be great outside (plus gain alot of room)

I used to lift that stuff too, no more.

We're planning on adding a shed in side yard adjacent my work space so down the road I may move this noise producer out there.

So here are a couple photos of the tank and frame that came with it. This was a bulk storage tank for a large home build that had a manifold hanging off the back rack with multiple ports for the various contractors to plug in to. I helped remove that manifold when I purchased this. Prior owner didn't want the frame so I took it and am going to clean it up and add to it. I will mount the compressor and motor above this tank on that frame once I add a couple more supports and a mount plate on top.

Great so far. So will the comp be mounted on the tank via frame or separate?

That frame (plus a couple strategic additions) will hold the compressor above and tank below. Originally I was going to scrap the frame but it has a couple things going for it. First it has a nice wide base and you can't see them but under each corner there are some nice rubber feet already mounted. I will try those feet first and if I'm not happy I'll get some hockey pucks on order.

I use the rubber insulators you can find on places like Zoro and Fastenal. Just be sure to check the ratings for weight. The studs make it nice for mounting either way.

OK, so a little farther today on the Eaton Build. I pulled out the two piece pulley (probably has a technical name but I don't know it) and hardware. Then installed it on the 5HP motor.

After that I lined up the compressor head on the edge of the bench and then slid electric motor pulleys up against compressor pulleys. I made sure everything was square then started to take mount measurements from the edge of the table to bolt mount locations. This gave me an offset reference for the compressor versus the electric motor. Once I completed drawing up the plate with mount locations (holes for the compressor and slots for the electric motor to be able to tighten the dual running belts) I then took the flash drive with file to a local fab shop with a small cnc plasma. They had 1/4" up on the table and will run this later today. I will pick up those plates and some steel tube to finish the frame tomorrow.

OK, so I landed a job installing a 3" lift on a Tacoma week after this one. It would be really helpful to have air tools so the plan is to finish this build this week. Here are a couple of pics, first is what I'm working with from prior owner and second is all the misc steel cut to length. Plan on welding the frame up in the morning and start painting after that. Then comes assembly....

It is, I wanted to epoxy it but my nasty habit of smoking with acetylene & oxygen with little buggers of steel here & there wouldn't allow it. Seemed staining was next best thing. So so happy with it, was brand new Crete & I even etched it. However it still flaked off in a couple small 1" spots so I don't know. Better than nothing I guess & oil puddles up & wipes up very easy now.

So we started by tearing down the frame and tank. Youngest in back ground helping out.

Then started framing up other side

assembly and squaring up of frame with fancy ratchet strap

adding top plate 1/4" thick

OK, so per DOT RM Doctrine you always read instructions last. Well, I cheated and read them half way thru the process this time. Come to find out they recommend mounting the compressor head to angle iron so that you can have maximum air flow around the head to cool it. So I didn't as my design had it being mounted to a 1/4" plate. Now I could have used steel spacers to move it up away from the plate but where I'm locating this I have a height requirement to keep it under (loft above it). So out comes the sharpie and torch to remove some steel and install some "factory air".......... ;)

half hour later we have a big ol hole.......

finished wire wheeling the frame and then went and picked up some spray paint to shoot this with

Add to the cut twice to find out it's still too short!

Thanks, I cheat though. Straight edge guide and that round forming die in the upper left hand corner made the corners. Keep flame small (just enough to penetrate the 1/4" plate) & the fact I have a few years experience.........

Well, since I am using spray cans as I have no air to use my spray gun that should be par for the course........ ;)

Edit: so I sprayed the frame with primer. One tip I should mention, if you're spraying a rectangular tube you always start by spraying the 4 corners of the tube length wise. Once you do that come back & spray the flats length wise. This helps to keep any runs to a minimum. Round tube you're just sol as I know of no good ways to keep runs at bay other than a lot of light coats....

Grace is for God. You get what you get from mere sinners

OK, so per DOT RM Doctrine

finished wire wheeling the frame and then went and picked up some spray paint to shoot this with

Following doctrine you must give it a horrible, horrible paint job, runs and everything.  ;D

Seriously!

You boneheads still on my case over Shawn's diff covers?

Man, what about some grace here?  ;)

Here's some grace for you Don, the fact of the matter is I kept that one D-60 cover you painted and sent back to me. Yeah, I have it hanging on the wall in my current garage. The grace part is I haven't taken any pictures of it in the build threads here. Keep DOTing up this thread and that may change, oh and yeah I couldn't sell it to anyone due to the runs in the silver paint. You know I was always big on quality and what not.......... :o
