For you LEOs
« on: July 20, 2016, 11:09:43 PM »
What information can you discern from a drivers license?

I've heard that staple holes, numbers after dashes in the DL number and other things are clues to officers.

Any truth to this or any other information you glean from the license?

I don't know how a tx dl number is setup but in Indiana & Co the whole thing is numbers & dashes....

Yeah ours are just 8 digits. I've heard crazy stuff like numbers after dashes in some states indicate the number of felony convictions and that staples indicate you've had your license detained for some reason.  I was just curious. No staple holes or dashes in mine.
I do know what a circle with a dot in it, or DEA means on a traffic ticket though!

I have heard in some states the middle two digits that are separated by a dash should match the year of your birthday.

My Indiana dl did not work that way, those two digits were 08 & I was born in a year ending in 7

Nope. Just the under age (21 now in Ca) and a regular CDL are diff. ID looks just like a CDL but has an X in front.

Newer cards can be swiped in the car and tell all, otherwise it was dispatch.

Staple holes mean the DL was seized (post DUI) and mailed to the state for admin suspension at one point. We staple them to the suspension app.

HC, by the time you get to my window don't you already know most of what there is to know from running the plate?  Assuming I'm driving my own vehicle.

Not necessarily. Depends on how I'm operating. Running simple traffic all I know by the time I get to the window is whether the tag or vehicle the tag should be displayed on is stolen.

Now if you are parked at a dope house and I'm waiting for you to roll away, I'll run the tag and thusly the registered owner so I can get as much info as possible before the stop.

You should go do a ride along with your local PD or SO. I could explain more offline. What's got you curious?
