Katrina journey story
« on: August 12, 2016, 08:46:13 PM »
Didn't really know where to post this story link....is it about a vehicle (deuce and a half)...is it what things he used in a shtf scenario? Is it what to watch out for?

I guess all of the above....so I thought it fit under "knowledge"....but feel free to move it if there's a better place. It's a story about one guys journey to help a friend and more during Katrina. Interesting read with just what you would expect from the good in people and the bad.

Thanks for sharing- good read and reminder that SHTF is beyond almost everyone's experience level; and then some!

interesting read.
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

I've seen this before. It's a good story, and a good deed done. I'm Mississippi National Guardsman, and although the Biloxi area is my unit's AO for hurricane operations, we were unable to respond due to being Iraq at the time. I can tell you, we were all quite torn during Katrina. That said, fellow guardsmen from across the U.S. (we have a good relationship with a lot of other states) deployed to fill in the gap we left when we crossed ocean. Thanks to all who stepped in to fulfill our duty, while we were fulfilling our duty.

True story... The day I was flying out of Pope to Iraq, another 82nd unit was flying out of Pope for Katrina.
So, Bobby...being the calculating trained warrior NCO that you are.  Take the appropriate action, Execute!

I heard some contractors made life a bit miserable from the rooftops for some oxygen thieves there.

Yeah, New Orleans was apparently a madhouse. Funny thing is that Mississippi received at least twice as much damage, but recovered quickly. New Orleans is still waiting for handouts from the government. One thing that tickled the crap out of me, was the report I got from some fellow Guardsmen who were working in the Ops Center in Mississippi. Governor Haley Barber was getting a brief on the situation when MG Honore came stalking in and giving orders (he had just arrived), and generally making an @$$ of himself (as usual, in my experience). Governor Barber looked over at him and said to get the #@$% out of my state, and take your troops with you. I heard he also gave an order to the State Police to provide escort to the state line and arrest him if he refused to leave. LOL

A neighbor of mine was/is a prop adjuster. He was taken by natl guard troops to certain neighborhoods in NO. He asked at one point "why aren't we going 'over there' (to some other neighborhood section)?" And the guard guys said "it's not safe yet, we have guys in there cleaning out the dirtbags" he could hear gunfire at sporadic times. I know lots of folks have "heard" those stories so I have no idea if it's true but this is a level headed guy who doesn't bs on much so I took him at his word.

Cj7ox you'll be glad to see Gen Honore has parlayed his expertise into a new career....

That would be ma Blackwater boys.

The white Puma helicopter down there was BlackWater as well. A lot of the flying we did there was for free!
Pumas cost a couple K an hour to run...
