Need Chainsaw Advice
« on: November 24, 2016, 10:06:04 AM »
So I'm patching my old Poulan together with chicken wire and spit and its time to step up.  The clutch spring broke and its hard to start with the chain in full engagement.  I've ordered a new sprocket, new clutch, clutch spring and a few screws which are missing.  I already put a new carb on it so I'm 50% of its cost new, into repairs.

I'm a fan of Stihl and that's the direction I'm headed.  I've narrowed it down to two saws.

The MS391, which is their top of the line Farm/Ranch saw rated at 4.4bhp 13lbs and a 20 inch bar max
or the MS 362C-M which is a professional saw rated at 4.69bhp 12lbs and 25 inch bar max

The cost difference is $150

Would appreciate advice from the menses.  Thanks in advance.

Buy the professional unit

I only kept my smallest saw which was a newer stihl when we moved after selling the farm. Back in the day when huskies were a very good option I bought professional grade only for my big saws. I ran them hard for over 10 years with regular maintenance & they would out cut most. When I sold they brought better than 50% of new cost. What's a $150 to a guy who just writes the check?

Also a good plastic case is worth it imo, my saws were always well cared for & cleaned and kept in those cases.

There are also good forums out there that cover the latest & greatest. Good friend of mine who also hears with wood purchased a modded new makita several years ago & has been very happy. He's quite a bit more frugal than me so take it for what it's worth. The stihls after break in need to be returned to the dealer to be re tuned if you go that route.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Dad's old Poulan needs replacing, but then again we haven't used it in years. But I'm still going to replace it. I've always heard Stihl's are nice but I don't like the price tag.

With chain saws like weapons, you get what you pay for - bought a Stihl Woodboss almost 30 years ago and it servers me well and has been used by my brother several times who runs it like he doesn't own it.....'cause he's a PLUMBER and my brother.......and it's been used hard by me as well.  Run a 16" bar usually with a 20" as needed.  Still using original plug and chains I bought new (2 each size and rotate through them, then have resharpening party) and I'm just now getting to the point where I will be doing some tune-up and repairs.

Ex-wife's father ran over it in the protective case earlier in its life and everything held up well, of course HE wasn't driving a tractor with a brush-hog!

I've always gravitated to Stihl but on an arborist site there  seems to be an equal number of people who like the Husky.  Like Honda and Toyota, their models are very similar in features and price.

All the professional tree crews Ive seen run Stihl, which may be why I lean that way.

Seems like the difference between the pro and farm saw is the Mtronic engine management system

RN,
Any Stihl saw that will pull a 20" 3/8" bar/chain will suit you fine. Husky makes a good say as well. The best intermediate saw is their 445. But the Stihl is a buy one for life unit. It's all I own/use these days and it just always works. Second Stihl I have owned in my life, btw. Had an old 025 that I managed to kill by dropping an oak onto it...but that's a story for another day

Oh and Northern has the Husky 440 saw on sale today for $169!!!!!!!!! Think I'll buy one just cause...

This is a good saw: I had one that worked right up to the point I bush-hogged it into an orange circle:

I would also say go with the professional models.
I had a bad run with a husky, choke lever kept breaking, so not major.
My recommendation would be no less than 3.5, and light enough to accomplish what you need to do.
My logic, my Stihl 025, same as chief killed with a tree falling, is 11 ish pounds. I can run it for hours on end. My husky, with similar power was pushing over 14 I think. Three pounds ain't a lot, but after hours on end running the saw, I made a difference in the back.
I think the 362 you are referencing is one that I was planning on replacing the husky.

Now on to the poullin, the joke around here is to just keep poullin and poullin...
I have one that I'm giving to a buddy hat doesn't need to cut wood. For parts or another saw if he so chooses. They work, but when you need a saw, spend good money and get a good saw.

The husky models mentioned are also good saws.

Sorry to be of no real help, I'd do the 362, to add a vote at least.

If I had to buy a new (all around) saw I would probably go with this one & slap an 18" bar on it. Plenty of power & with an 18" bar should be around 12#'s

That is a nice looking saw!

And I don't have anything against huskies, just the one I got rid of.
Me and it were not for each other.

For what it's worth I used to buy & cut tree tops from timber guys. They would use the skidders and pull the tops out to fields where I could cut them & toss wood into my dump trailer. I ran a similar sized huskie with an 18" bar. I did this with several different outfits over the years and we burnt a lot of wood. The guys were always impressed with how much wood it could chew up. Time is money & if the saw will cut its less hours per day holding on to it.....

I have a 361 and a 291.  The 361 / 362 new version is the better saw as it is the pro model and cuts pretty well.  Now for the big trees I have the 056 and the 090 man saw
My opinion is 362

First off. Thanks for the advice. Consensus seems to be the pro model regardless of brand.

Shawn funny you should list that husky as It was on my list to ask my local dealer about. I like the guy that owns the local general store about 10 miles from my place but he carries husky. The closest stihl dealer is 30 miles away. In the pro models it's a lot like Toyota and Honda. Both great and similar features in the price range. Here's what I can tell about those two pro models. Husky, msrp to get the XpG model with the cyclonic filter housing is about $50 more than the Stihl 362CM which has the cyclonic filter. Also the auto tune on the husky has more complexity and therefore "could" in theory be more of a potential problem versus the Mtronic system on the Stihl (which is funny since Stihl bought that system from Husky.)

So since I like the guy who owns the local store I will buy the 562xpg if he has it. Otherwise I'm going with the 362CM

Fair enough, the newer saw I still have is a stihl & it was purchased because the dealer took care of me on all of my other equipment from mowers up to my tractor.

With all of that said & it getting colder here I told the wife tonight after looking at chainsaw porn for this thread that there were several things I missed from our farm. Her response was "your wood stove" & I stated yes but farm stuff was my truck, dump trailer, skid loader & husky saws..... ;D

One thing to note here Matt. When a company has a name brand build a product, they have lisence to change things. It may look the same but, boy is it different.

I learned just how different models could be once. I was in Germany and owned a euro spec VFR-750 interceptor motorcycle. I simply had Tiger airlines box it up and ship it to my home, which they did. Customs was a joke and I drove it home then to the Honda dealership. We started digging into the bike there and found for example, the case on the euro bike was thicker than the american bike, The clutch was made of a different material, and the electrical system was different as well. They looked the same, same model, and both made by Honda, but they were very different bikes...

I have found the same to be true by name brand building for off brands. They have to go cheap on some parts to be able to competitively price the machine.

May not be the case here, but it also, just may be...

Glad I found this. I have a Craftsman (Poulan) and been thinking about trading up. Ran great at first, now all I do is pull and pull and when it starts, it way stay running. (did the fuel lines/filter)

When I got it thought it was a Husky, now I too have been looking at Stihl and there is a dealer just 2 blocks away.. Don't think I need bigger as you guys but 18-20 up from my 14 sounds great.

FWIW I have a older Stihl Farmboss I bought used in Texas about 9 years. It was in pretty good shape then and has ran like a striped ape whenever I grab it. We have Oak Wilt up here so most of my cutting is on dead Oak. It will rip right through them as long as I keep a sharp chain on. Never hardly bogs down unless I really lean into it hard.

What I like is that it starts up on a couple pulls no matter how long it has set. I use good gas and stabilizer but never have had to put it in the shop.

JR,

Don't discount a good 16"
I think that Husky 435 is a 16"

For what I do, I use a 20" powerful saw to get the trees daow. But then I like to use a 16" to buck the limbs, top and even root ball if I pushed the thing over. It really takes two saws for heavy work, which you don't have, so consider a 16" as well

Well, I running down to the local dealer stihl now. Thought about fixing the poulan again, but I just don't trust it.

I need something for utility work and will run when I grab it. I have always used stabilizer for my 2 stroke stuff.

Not looking to drop a 30 inch tree but sure I could if need be. 16inch would probably do me good and be easier to handle for what I have here. I can always get bigger later if the need arises.

JR, imo, it's hard to beat a 261. I have a MS260 which is the older model, and it will run a 20" bar no problem, for guys like us that use on occasion. Mine came from a buddy, the largest tree trimmer in my town...it's been dropped, kicked, and probably been run over and keep's on firing up on 2nd pull. I did put a carbide chain on it for ripping railroad ties (also used it to cut a semi trailer in half..but that pretty much took out the first carbide chain. lol). Also have a 360 that rarely comes out because of how well the 260 works, and how much lighter it is.

Well, just came home with the Stihl 180. Will do anything I need around here and then some. Case was 1/2 price, spare chain and plug. OTD for $270 fueled up test run.

Old guy who runs the store said he has a 20 year old one that still runs great. Still a lot of plastic but I like the controls (just 1 lever) and side chain adjuster.

Well just cut up some oak that I got from my dad. About 18 inch diameter. Also cut up about a 14 diameter cedar that I had down.

Shawn it has a 20 inch bar right now. I'll get a 28 to hang on the wall for those rare instances.

This thing freakin rips!!  First pro saw I've ever used and man does it go through 18inches of oak like butter. It sounds awesome. Hearing protection is not optional.

Yeah it's 14.5lbs, so tree climbing with it may not be ideal but I'll keep the little poulan around for the lighter stuff and put a 16 inch bar on it and get a smaller pro saw when that one craps out.

Good to hear!
Now you got me thinking about a big saw too.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

Good one Ken. At thanksgiving yesterday we played volleyball with the family. My 20 something nephews and my teenage nieces got smoked by the old man. I was diving and making saves and they were afraid to get dirty. Besides 50 is the new 30 dontcha know!

50, I only wish!!

Well, mine works great, already burned threw a tank with a big ole that has been waiting for months. To bad its at ground level, my back is not happy.

My brother in law asked about Trump last night at TG. My wife was screaming about how bad he was for at least 10 minutes. We talked facts, she yelled racisum, womanizer and unqualified. She even thinks today there might be a recall listening to her liberal channels.

JR, I believe my small saw is the ms250. It has its place, especially when climbing. If you're not doing a whole lot it's more than enough.

They had the 250 as well as others but this seemed to fit my needs. I am very happy with it so far.

Mine is 9lb with a 16in roller bar with 2hp.

Copy JR, nothing better than a chain saw discussion. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last couple days on this thread.

Funny I'm already plotting my next saw!  Stihl makes an "in tree" saw that I would like to have for being up
I'm the tree limbing or just general small jobs. MS150 12 inch bar 1.3hp and 5.7 lbs.

Those are called climbing saws and are very useful for climbing, then hoisting and cutting branches or dead tops

I have a MS170 too for downed limbs and whatnot, nice to have the little guy for quick work, and nice to have for somebody who's never ran a saw before and wants to learn.

My dad just got the new 250 and really likes it. Got the easy start, which is huge since his shoulders are shot.

That 260pro is legendary. My buddy has that, and 4 more including a 440mag. But he grabs the 260 most of the time.

Longer bar = less bending over too Tex. Sounds like you got the big dog daddy lol.

The guy who trimmed my tree out front had that little Stihl. Really nice with just a single grip on top. Just pulled it up down on a rope.

Mine started first pull every time cept when I ran out of fuel. Very little vibration and always idled easy.

When needed, a BIG brother will follow.

In the shop I have a craftsman 12 inch saw from about 1975-1980.  not reallly sure.  It was the first saw I ran with my grandfather standing watch.  I have it torn down and the carb in cleaning solution.  I may start a build thread on that little saw.  It has nostalgia and I'd love to bring it back to life.  They don't make replacement carbs for it any longer but I did get a rebuild kit.  If I can't get it to run I will see if I can get a close enough to fit carb and make it work. There are 3 things I inherited from my grandfather.  His toolbox, which I have and this saw, and a mint C-10 Cheyenne `1972 Chevy longbed in olive green and white two tone with 82,000 original miles on it.  The latter was stolen out of a home depot parking lot in 1994 and never recovered.  There is a special place in hell for the guys that stole it and I've often wanted to send them there personally.  That truck held fabulous memories for me for all my time with my grandfather.  It was pristine.  one day i'd like to buy one and restore it.
