Transfercase noise

EL TATE:
I'm really leaning that way. just got to get it on the rack and get it diagnosed before I go throwing good money at bad.

Flyin6:
That's the only plan that makes sense

looks like a pretty good deal. haven't called him yet, but he's a customer so might get even better.

Wilbur:
Hey Tate not sure which transfer case you have but this seems to be similar to the problem you describe:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/125182-Transfer-case-grinding-in-2wd

In this there is a post that references a "T-Case saver", the link is broken but here's the right one:

http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/transfer_case_saver.html

I dunno if that helps but it may be on the right track.....if you have a spare vehicle to drive while you figure it out you might be able to see if its the snap ring only which would be a cheaper fix than full rebuild (assuming nothing else is trashed) if you wanted to go that route...

EL TATE:
Good lookin out. talked to a trans shop that I deal with and they basically said the same thing. case saver and a new case half w/ brgs should be all I need. the driveline clunk wipes out the spot that holds the snap ring and lets the shaft in and out of gear, basically like trying to go into 4wd when it's not synched up. I'll report back on findings when I get it sorted out.

thanks for all the help.
