The United States was only debt free for one year with an effective date of 08011835 during President Jackson's presidency.

It takes a lot of taxes to pay for a nanny state

& what years were we not at war?

Depends. The U.S. has been at peace for 21 years during its entirety. But during the isolationist period (1935-1940) the U.S. went 5 years without a war.

Bobby, for some reason I thought it was less than 21. Thought I had read it was more like 15, wondering if 5 or 6 years we weren't still involved in something. I'll have to research that a bit more.

Regardless, we're not as civilized a world as we tend to try and convince ourselves that we have become.

Shawn, in which of the wars were we the aggressors and fired the first shot? Or reasonably believe we were not in imminent danger?

Charles, my tin foil hat is on tight today and quite honestly I believe we probably fired the first shot in one form or another a majority of the time.

Not to quibble and I am not of the mindset that the US is without fault by any stretch. I just think war is a condition that human kind finds itself in on a fairly regular basis.

But I don't think that we likely fired the first shot most of the time, at least as far as true "wars" are concerned. Certainly in lots of conflicts we may well have, especially wars with Indians. But I think in the last 100 years we have been mostly responding to others. Viet Nam might be the outlier in that one, but even there, I would say it was murky. But the major wars WWI, WWII, Korea, the 1st Gulf War, and the 2nd Gulf War we responded to actions by others IMHO. Again, not that we are without fault, but I don't think we started those.

Wilbur, I understand. Not here to debate really. All I was implying was that we seem to be at constant war and wars cost money when the tax payers aren't reaping the spoils of war. I'm sure someone is reaping those benefits & as far as who fired the first shot? I have no idea what the truth is in that regards either. I will say there always seems to be someone's interest at stake. Not saying true evil doesn't exist & good shouldn't stomp it out where it lays....

Ah yes there is the military industrial complex that needs to get fed. So was communism the existential threat or a convenient excuse?

I will say that we are always the first to respond to international disasters and have a bigger heart than any other country.

I'd settle for stopping the extortion payments known as foreign aid to countries that hate us. That's billions back in the kitty right there.

Can you blame NK for hating us? Didn't we take out 20% of their population in the war, with hundreds of thousands of bombs, and napalm? The only countries that we don't attack are ones with nukes. jus sayin
