Diamondback HD Tonneau Cover
« on: November 16, 2017, 06:12:36 PM »
So for my birthday a few weeks ago, a very awesome and gorgeous woman bought me a DiamondBack HD Tonneau Cover for the new truck.  I actually settled on this cover because of shawn's recommendation based on him having the SE Tonneau Cover.

I went with the HD version because of the weight capacity and the 12 tiedowns.  The instructions say that it should take about 45 minutes to assemble, I took my time, fiddled around a little bit and end result was about 2.5 hours.

A few things I noticed about this cover are.  The panels are super light (all aluminum) and slide on the hinges very easily.  All of the edges on the low profile cab guard and the aluminum truck box are nice and rounded and covered with rhino lining so you don't cut yourself.  All of the welds look pretty good, and the Rhino Lining that is sprayed on this thing if pretty thick and evenly applied.

so here are a few pictures of how the cover came when picked up at fedex.

upon taking the pallet off the truck and opening things up, everything is wrapped nicely and enough padding to keep things from shifting and scratching other parts.

No rain in any of the photos, how did you manage that? My son and I got very wet out hunting this morning but did manage to bring one buck home.

Looks good Nate but you need to wash that black truck....
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Why?

Dirt protects the paint from harmful UV

Someday when I wash mine off, I'll prove that theory!

That HD cover is rated to hold 1600# which is really cool IMO, obviously it holds Nate with all those foot prints. My SE model is only rated for 400# and thank goodness I don't weigh that much......

All I can say is I’m glad I don’t live near you because I would weigh 400# with all those fixins you’re constantly posting pics of......

On another note, I really like that tool bin. I didn’t realize those were an option. Not sure I like the price so I may have to weld up my own version in the future. :likebutton:

Is this the setup they advertise can be used to haul an atv?  I am looking for a way to get the wife, kid, dog, all the supplies and the atv up north without hooking up the trailer.  I've been thinking about building a sled deck type support to load the atv on and still be able to get all of our supplies under the tonnue cover in the bed of the truck.  Something like this would work well though.

It looks like the bed rails fully support all of the weight?  Most of the commercial sled decks I have looked at have support legs to the bed of the truck.
Is it just clamped to the rail in the center?  Is it secured to the truck at the front or rear at all?

I checked out this contraption the other day on Nate's city truck. It's beefy, I have no doubt it can hold the weight of a ATV. I do think it would require a ramp angle that would be challenging wet/snowy. A ATV winch would likely make loading safe and easy...just thinking out loud here LoL

The ramp is the difficult/ expensive part that I am still trying to work out.  They sell 10'+ aluminum ramps specifically for this application but they are spendy.  I think I could get by with just a set of regular ramps if I load/ unload in the right spots.  At home I can back right up to the ditch and drive directly into the bed of the truck.  I could do the same and with a pair of regular ramps get on top of the deck safely.  Up north at the cabin we have a loading ramp I could use in a similar matter.

They show two large atv’s loaded on Nate’s version. Quality company, if it works for your application I would take a hard look at them. I’ve had my cover for 10 months or so & haven't had any issues from it yet. I don’t count on having any either....

yes, this is their HD version and it will actually hold 2 ATV's/1 side-by-side/or 1600lbs.  yeah I am sure that one could (if they had access to aluminum welding equipment) make their own ramps, tire stops, extensions and what not if they wanted to.

It looks like the bed rails fully support all of the weight?  Most of the commercial sled decks I have looked at have support legs to the bed of the truck.

yes the cover supports all of the weight.  there are no center support legs.  it is clamped onto the bed rail in the center because both ends of the cover open.

give me a minute and ill go snap 2 pics for you, so you can see the cross beams welded to the underside of the covers and how both covers open.

My SE model doesn't have the formed and welded channels on the underside. I think Nate's HD version is a bit thicker than mine as well.

Thanks for the info Nate.  The wheels are a turning now.  My good buddy has a nice tig setup.  I'm sure he is capable of welding aluminum.  I don't want to spend nearly that much on a system but thinking I can build something purpose built to my needs for under $100 and 40 lbs.

Bring it over sometime Nate, we can run it in the shop and I will show ya the tricks to award winning paint. People always accuse me of repainting Kay's Mustang because the paints so nice. She got 3 "best paint" trophy's this past summer at car shows.

Orrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... bring it over I will take you Coyote hunting and show ya how to make yr paint look like Patches LoL
