Lance 1995
« on: February 19, 2015, 05:35:03 PM »
Lance is now in the camper trailer business. They are cadilliacs of the business to be sure, cutting edge everything from advanced construction to state of the art assembly machines and processes and a quality control that is pretty much as good as it gets.

So, Real man owns a camper, a 34 foot Signature view finder which is akin to a small house on wheels. It is a pain to haul around and requires the D-Max truck to do so. I want something small and lighter on its feet that can be pulled by my Toureg TDI or a half-ton size truck.

The camper is going to be a dual purpose unit which I will use on trips, visiting shops and shows and also be a competent bug out unit should the need arise. Whatever I get I plan to add "Things" to it to more fit in with the Real-Man purpose and intent. So later on expect a jacked up suspension, generator, off the grid enhanced capability, weapon racks, more H2O and filtering capability and things like that.

I am buying the thing with all those thoughts in mind and view each candidate through that lens.

Today I went to look at the Lance 1995 and it's smaller brother, the 1575.

The units are located at Holman Motors in Batavia, OH, a dealership I have dealt with in the past whom I trust. They are a wholesale dealer so the bottom number is listed already as the selling price. I have used their service and warranty and it is all great.

So without further adieu, let's look at this Lance camper

This thing is around 22 feet long, I think and has a max GWT of 5,700

Max towing weight of my diesel Toureg is a healthy 7700 so it fits well.

I liked the slide out cargo tray right away along with the nifty black tank drain hose storage compartment

The U-shaped dinette which would be the sleeping area for the pre-Rangers, a place from which they would conduct their mission planning prior to outside operations

The RV standard Jensen radio and other do-dad control head and the cool "Lance" trim piece above the door.

The entire camper had a nice "Fitted" feel and appearance. It reeked of quality everywhere. I definitely like this one a lot!

This is a 4-season camper because all the liquid tanks sit inside heated enclosures so that heated air is ducted around them to keep things toasty and not frozen

The power awning is BIG

The roof still has the elastic membrane, although not PVC rubber. It is some mo-advanced stuff that holds up better than the rubber stuff

I might need to build a steel cage to fit around the AC unit to lift branches out of the way so that I don't end up with a new sky-light

That is a good brand for sure. Been around a long time building slide in campers. Looks good from here cept for the slide topper. Those things are good for something I guess but hard to get debris that the wind deposits on the top of the slide off and if you cold weather camp and they ice up then what. I use the blue tarps cousin the white tarp when winter camping laying on top of the slide so I can pull the snow and ice off  the roof before pulling in the slide.

Those Lance's are really nice i've heard. That's a nice unit, very similar floorplan to ours actually (Whitehawk 21 DSRB).

That Lance has a huge dinette it looks like. Dedicated freezer is awesome too. So much nicer than an "all in one" you find in the smaller RV's.

Awesome storage! That black pull out system is amazing!

You think that thing will be anywhere's close to 5700 by the time you're done with it?  ;D ;D Extra water, fuel, genset, weapons/ammo, all the steel you're bound to add... all heavy items. I wonder a bit about a shy-6k lb unit behind a Toureg... i know it's rated for it... and could pull it... don't know how enjoyable it'd be, esp w/o solid rear axle.

Ours is 6500 loaded to the gills, and i didn't like it much behind my 07 Chev 1500... hence, duramax.

Good idea with the tarp thing

I am moving this one into the #1 spot for now. Pretty spendy but the quality if way, way up there, but so is the price. I don't want to be paying for all that kalifornia over regulation and taxation and unfortunately, I think I am here

Hmmm,
good thoughts there
That weight is a max numba
inclusive of internal junk you'd add like food, clothing, junk, stuff, do-dads, what-cha-ma-kall-its, thing-a-ma-bobs, and this-and that's.
I probably wont go over that

So I had a conversation with the owner about just that...trailer and toureg.
He liked it because first the toureg is rated for it, and a lot of people in that weight class vehicle do not tow trailers this size. He thought from a write-ability/adventure standpoint, it would be quite the story.

These people at Holman motors are brilliant with respect to RVs. Their whole dealership is all about them. They also carry GMC trucks which they inventory just to pull their various campers and trailers. He wanted to fool around with the Toureg and his best weight distributing hitch some to work it all out, then test it some. They are definitely on board. But he knows I have a pretty good backup with the D-Max

When working with the "lite" trailers you have to carry what you need for the trip not what you might need and all the tools to repair replace anything that could break. Creature items alone for us weigh in at close to 1,000 lbs. That includes food but stuff adds up fast. Granted we have much more net weight than these smaller rigs but it is still near the max GVW when heading out.
