Kyle's LBZ Build
« Reply #200 on: February 28, 2016, 12:00:52 AM »
Not really picture worthy, but I finally got around to tapping into the XM wiring to splice in a headphone jack in my glovebox. Now I can use my phone or iPod for music. Pretty simple mod; few bucks in parts and you're all set. Sounds great too.

Note to anybody considering this... Splice in both the grounds, or for some reason you will lose bass if you only use one ground off the XM module harness. If you splice into both grounds, sounds amazing.

Here's the how to I followed:

I didn't use network cable though like the guy in the 'how to', I used three strands of 20 gauge copper wire. Probably overkill, but whatev :)

I am SO doing this this weekend, and to the wife's Yukon. I've got the tape deck contraption and she's got a chincy radio frequency broadcaster that robs the sound. thanks for sharing Kyle, might hit you up with a few questions during the process if that's ok?

Nice job.  I had done that to the 2005 Silverado I had before I sold it.  I agree it worked great as long as you are careful making the connections.  I have not bothered to do that on our newer vehicles though, partly  because I got lazy and partly because I went back to burning a bunch of CD's instead.  I always found that the hard drive space on my phone was too small and it was difficult to use it while driving.  Felt safer just using the normal buttons to control an MP3 CD.  If I had enough data to stream music, it would be totally worth it.

Yeah, I mostly just stream Pandora, but what's extra handy is using the audio bit of GPS guidance coming through the stereo. Radio sucks, it's all commercials anymore, and burning CD's is a pain.

Removed my window visors since I busted one awhile back...

And OMG this glue is not coming off... Going to have to either come up with a plan or see if the detail shop has any suggestions...

So a few years back wife and I removed the plastic body trim off our 2007 Sierra, in the process I tried nearly every liquid I had in the house. Then along comes the neighbor walking down the street, who low and behold was a mobile detailer and body man.  He said use mineral spirits. The clear stuff. I walked back to his house with him and he meant me a spray bottle, took the sticky stuff right off! Then the next day he took my truck and detailed it for us....

Long story short, try mineral spirits (saying that seems like I might be calling it the wrong thing).

Probably some what hard on the clear coat but I have noticed no lasting damage.

I have a set of Weather Tech visors that came off the Bus.  You want them, they are yours.  Not sure what shipping costs would be but you can have them.

3M eraser wheel and Goof Off is the trick on residue
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

I appreciate that RN. I will keep that in mind... I am going to try without for awhile, but i'll let you know if i change my mind! That's very generous.

Thanks for that too, i'll keep this in mind if the eraser wheel doesn't work!

Kyle, first time you have the window down a bit in the rain you will miss those visors. GM just has to have all those electric buttons right where the rain ends up.

Well the 3M eraser wheel is the real deal. Worked awesome, wish I would have got one when I took the door moldings off. I was done with the adhesive removal for the visors in an hour

Hit the residue with a little goo gone and it came right off

Exhaust is on too. I'm a bit ashamed... For a variety of reasons, I didn't do it myself... Had the truck up on blocks, everything laid out ready to go, and was gonna tear into it, but couldn't get the truck high enough off the ground to feel confident I could finish today. So took it down to an exhaust shop just down the street and then knocked it out in no time, and for cheap.

Man a lift would be nice...

Love how it sounds. I think it's just right, doesn't drone to bad, nice and deep, and sounds mean wide open. Not gonna wake the dead like a straight pipe, but it's definitely burly. I like it a lot

yes.  A muffler makes a great difference.

I should have taken mine in too.  I'll probably get it in with clamps and then take it to a shop to get it all aligned and welded.

so it sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into a lift for the shop!

if your going to put visors back on, go with the in-channel ones like these.

I just can't sacrifice my RV bay... I don't need to lift into the air to stand under, just need to figure out a way to get it off the ground a little more. With my jack maxed, the bill of my hat hits the cross member laying vertical on my creeper.

Anybody have any recommendations?

we use 3 2"x8" nailed together to form a ramp to change flat tires on our 175kw generators on the side of the road (pull the good tire on and let the bad hang off [tandem axles]) so.. maybe get some good 6"x6" to make a ramp, or clean rail road ties to pull up on..? pretty simple and fail safe, especially for crawling around under the truck sitting on its own weight

These are handy, and portable. I have one at the shop, but a little light for a 3/4 ton:

This dude is probably what you would need (there are cheaper versions):

I still need to install the new plug but need to figure out the best way to cut out the bumper.... Might need to find someone with a plasma cutter

It might, but a real hole saw or jig saw is much better. Tape off the area to protect the chrome and mark the cuts.

Those are coopers right?

I think I put that same hitch in mine. Sure a lot more than the stocker.
I salvaged the mount off the old one to put in somewhere when I do my rear bumper.

I don't think you're planning on bumpers, so you'll have to cut carefully so as not to damage the chrome. There is a good chance however that it will show up in the future. Cut with no heat, and treat the edges with some form of rust preventer, and it should hold up for a while.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

Yep thats what I'm gonna do. Heat on chrome is a no-go after more reading, esp since I have no plans for aftermarket bumpers.

Invested in a nice new hole saw and a metal specific dremel bit. Should do the trick.

And yes they're Cooper ATP's JR, Fuel Maverick wheels

I would just use a cutoff wheel. Don't over think it. Seal the light with silicone to keep water from penetrating and it will be fine imho.

All done. Only had one booboo, and it'll be mostly hidden by my license plate bracket.

Used a 2" hole saw, and then an oscillating saw for the straights. Cleaned up with a dremel diamond tip, then sanded and painted the exposed metal. Used a silicone adhesive when installing the plug, front and back, to seal out water. That will dry clear, it's white in the pics...

Turned out pretty good I think

Thanks dudes. It looks real good with the license plate back on there too, snugs right up with barely a gap between the plug and the plate bracket.

How i'm trying to figure out what to do with my cheepish Husky truck box.

Option A) Leave it alone
Option B) Take it out, and spray it black with Bedliner
Option C) Sell the chrome one on Craigs, and buy the black Husky one
Option D) Sell the chorme one on Craigs, splurge and get a Camlocker

I vote A, C or D.   I've learned this the hard way.  Cheap tool boxes are cheap.  Very prophetic I know, but true.  I bought a tractor supply chest for one of my trucks years back and after about a year and sliding it into and out of a few trucks it wouldn't even latch anymore.

I would lean toward D. Never seen the the cam locker in person but it's priced like a weather guard or something similar so it should be of good quality.   I skipped the aluminum altogether in the ford and went for a steel chest.  A little heavier but a ton stronger than aluminum.  I chuck 36" pipe wrenches in it from the ground and it scratches the inside but nothing else.

I can't put a dent in it unless I hit it with a sledge I think.

Nice clean mount and it sounds great.

I have passed the wife on the freeway and she said it sounds like a train going by. (no muffler)

No, not really pic worthy, but helpful none the less. thanks for posting this; I was getting ready to burn the whole Bose program and opt for aftermarket until I saw this. Now we have a use for the XM i'll never use. Wife is super happy.
