So remind me, duramax /Allison? 205?

Shortbed, what are you doing in regards to lift / suspension and tire size?

yessir. LBZ/6speed allison/GM round 205

front springs will be 52” swap (technically 53” with the boomerang shackle kit RDP has..) rears will be factory. i’m shooting for 4-6” max with 35/37s. 4.10 gear. dana 60 front. currently has FF14 bolt in the back, but may go over to either an AAM 11.5 (dmax) or mid 90s dana 80 front a cummins truck. we shall see. if i can get some solid measurements from an AAM (WMS-WMS) i’ll go ahead and start that hunt

ohh happy day

the owner of precision fab called me yesterday to inform me that the 2-4wd conversion cross members are now available for pre order. so i hoped online this morning and for my order placed for one, as well as a set of 52” conversion HD FUSH to give me another 6” of spring length to absorb more of the road and give a better ride.

he was final test fitting an LBZ onto his new mounts and starting production after he’s 100% satisfied.

i’m giddy with excitement as this is the piece i’ve been waiting for for over a year now. and finally have motivation to get a move on with the body/frame work.

twin stick shifters in and functional. all that’s left for the new trans setup is the disk brake cable install.

need to sound deaden the trans tunnel, but it’s in and working nicely with a square hole allowing for the shifter.

i’ll try and snag some pics today if possible.

ohh.. and
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

pulled the e brake assembly and output bearing retainer housing off yesterday and swapped out the red 7 tooth gear for a yellow 5 tooth gear. back to being ~2% off in speed. which is highly acceptable considering it’s all mechanical and no adjusting/GPS calibrated speedo.

also, located and fixed the semi severe (in my mind at least) oil leak on the DS of engine that was subsequently oozing and smearing all down the side and bottom of engine.

a bad o ring on the timing pin inside it’s housing was the culprit. grabbed the pin and it flopped back and forth in the housing with zero resistance. went down to cummins and picked up 2 (just in case) pulled the retainer clip off and slid it out. the o ring that was on the pin actually had a smaller OD than the outside of the timing pin.. rendering it essentially pointless. so, with that replaced we degreased the engine fairly well to check for further leaks. and after ~50 miles she seems to be good.

for today, we hope to source a trans tunnel cover from a <‘79 waggy or cherokee from a junk yard to properly fit the new trans shifter and get all that buttoned back up

GM and Dodge shifter angles are different, One is more straight up and down than the other fyi.....

is this for 205s or 4500s?

i can get an angle from a ‘99 dodge NV4500 and report back

I'm thinking with that kit I should be able to reuse the stock Chevy single stick without hitting my bench seat. As it is, looks like the nv4500 stick is going to move back about 3-4 inches farther towards the seat. I don't really want to have to use a remote twin stick at this time.... also don't want bucket seats.

and if it’s any confirmation.. when we put the 4500 in the kaiser it pushed the shifter back (from original 4 speed) about 4” as well. just for comparison.

that’s a pretty sweet kit actually. shortens up drive train length some (not that you need it in SCLB square body..) and reduces pieces used.

if you do run across a 29 spline dodge case, they bolt right up to the 4500. did it for the kaiser. where exactly are you located? out by turner?

I have access to 2 Ford 32s, but driver's drop. No bueno.

might want to recount.. i think they’re 31 spline and short input. you’d need a 32 spline long from a chevy behind a TH400 or 4L80 i believe.

which kit are you thinking of using?

that gray case i have started out as a small bore. couple hours at the machine shop and now it’s a big bore lol

and you’ll need a 29 spline male.. then a 29 spline female/female (if you go the route i’m thinking you are. if you have a way to do it with a 29 spline female input for the 205.. please disregard previous statement lol)

and this was a 27 spline 80mm small bore case.

now, it’s going to be a 31 spline 90 mm big bore case for a 203/205 doubler.

While I was working on the front I decided to install a top dead center pointer. I used the timing pin to locate TDC then cut a groove in the balancer. Then made a pointer that bolts to the cover and case. To those that aren't aware, the Cummins balancer can bolt on in 4 different positions, *90 apart. I'll have to keep it in the right location for the pointer to work.

I made the plate large enough to remount the crank position sensor if I ever desire to run a tach. (Took the sensor off when rerouting the belt)

i ran an autometer diesel specific tach that reads off the alternator and can be tuned depending on pulley size. did it on the kaiser as well as turners rig.

Thanks Nick for intro'ing yourself.

Plan will be to get the Burb into your hands, hopefully this week, then write about the process. I'll video the dyno time, assuming there is some and document results.

All of this will be a baseline then in time, likely less than a year, modify the truck by turbocharging and start making some good usable towing power for the thing.

The best thing about this "reconnection" is how I think it will serve to unmask the tuning side of things which will point to the honest brokers like Nick that people like RedNeck were pushing me toward all along.

every time i hear ‘turbocharge’ i immediately also think ‘.. with no spark plugs’, but it sounds like this 6.0 is getting ready to be ripped wide open (performance wise)  and then on top of that having a whirly bird or two bolted on.. shouldn’t have any sort of power issue save pulling a back hoe.

Good eye Shawn. Yeah. It has a fifth wheel back there now along with a 100 gallon diamond plate fuel tank...but that's not why I got it. It has a 12v and a 5 speed. Gonna swap it into my 73. Only bad part is that it's a 2wd trans so I might just adapt to my existing 4sp. Not going to be a highway truck anyways.

Oh, and got a couple spares just in case .

man.. i should have waited and gotten that 4500 bell housing from you!

nahh.. what am i saying. i needed to get it in the truck ASAP. hah

who needs 2 of those motors.. they’re heavy and take up lots of floor space. i’ll do you a favor and relieve you of one..

so, i believe i’ve found the issue.

when putting the case back together i just grabbed the red one that came from the GM one. well.. turns out it’s 7 tooth. the one that came out of it was a yellow 5 tooth. so is the one in the auto setup that was just pulled. as well as the 29 spline 205 in the shop. and all 3 drive gears are the same 14 tooth gear. so, going to pull the old one from the auto setup and swap it over. should solve the issue.

speedo gear question.

i our the old gear from my GM 205 in the dodge case. (GM one was red, but appeared to have same thread pitch as the chewed up yellow one) the yellow was 5 tooth. unsure what the red one is since it’s at my dads house in the truck. i compared it to the 29 spline dodge 205 i have here too. it’s a yellow 5 tooth gear as well. the kaiser is burying the speedo past 80 at ~60 mph.

the drive gear i pulled out of my GM case has 18 teeth and was mated to the red gear. the drive gear diameter is .92” diameter.

the dodge drive gear from 29 spline is .75” and 14 tooth. so.. it seems as if the drive gears interchange to adjust speed. but i guess i just need to pull the one in the truck out and compare to the auto/205 gear that came out of the kaiser (bc it was dead on) worse comes to worse, ill just pull it all out of the old tcase and put it in the new one. bc i know it worked right. just trying to avoid doing that. would rather just swap drive gears..

For sure the booster.

Don, did you put stiffer valve springs in? Don't remember.

When he looked at the data, the fuel trims looked ok? Usually if there's an issue the fuel trims reflect it.

And, did you replace the O2 sensors?
Ken, I think you are on it...where I was thinking

Valve train noise sounding like detonation to the knock sensors

Yes, double springs, moly pushrods, Z06 lifters

He mentioned spark knock, retarding timing, not getting into the fuel enrichment cycle.

O2 Sensors same old ones

i was thinking the same thing. if the timing is way regarded.. you’d lose that lope you should be getting from the cam. as well as throttle response. and.. as mentioned before. terrible mileage. that’s worse than our 587 pete with N14 ISX cummins @ ~40k GVRW.

Want single stage, just touching up some stuff before it gets the whole treatment (might be awhile)

(yes this is a double post)

NAPA is who ive always taken stuff to. but i’m not sure i’d that’s just the one by me or all of them.
