Title: New wood panel clamps
Post by: Flyin6 on December 02, 2021, 06:33:13 PM
Now that i am producing timber from the saw mill, I have need to make up panels for tables and doors and cabinets.

I decided to build a maiden voyage project of a simple desk for a grand child.

The clamps I purchased clamp on the ends while also applying pressure on the top and bottom or front and back depending on orientation

Here they are:

They are really quite simple and use a donor piece of wood to complete the assembly

So, I picked out some nice 2X6 lumber and cut 2.5" X 48" pieces, 8 total pieces to create four clamps

I planed them down to 2.25" thick

Then I assembled the plastic blocks to either end of the wood lengths.

And they fit together like this:

As the clamp is tightened it pushes on either end, tightening up a glue joint, and holds all pieces flat while applying that pressure.

The top of the desk is 27" X 50", and that was the very first clamping project. Those are boards recently milled on my saw mill from 190 year old logs. The stuff was pretty seasoned to be sure!

Oh, and to keep the clamps from becoming a permanent part of the first clamping project, I covered all surfaces that will touch clamped materials with aluminum duct tape to keep the glue from sticking.

I built one of these at the cabinet shop which helped  a bunch for some of rough sawn projects.  Very helpful tool with a 2” router bit
