Well the plane mama was supposed to be on yestertag had engine troubles.
Dr. appointments in the city today.
So I drove through a blizzard, freezing rain, motocross whoop snow drifts, etc to get her out.
We did stop in hotel for a sleep along the way.

Today picked up my solar panels and charge controller.
Man they are big.

Officially ordered the following:
Samlex PST-3000-24 3000 watt pure sine wave inverter
RC-300 remote control panel for inverter.

They are en route to store today. Figured spend a bit more to buy from a real store in Canada. This should eliminate the lemon theory, as it was a couple hundred extra bucks, but if I do have problems I know I have warranty and dealing with a Canadian store will make things better.

The guy at the store says this is one of the best inverters he knows of, did add there may be better but not that he is readily aware of, so take that for what it's worth anyone considering pure sine wave inverters.

I hope you're starting today! That's a big list for only Monday.

Good luck in any case.
For the record I do not like front end work, so I don't envy your undertaking.
And yes at least some documentation.

We need to see the video.

On the grounding and bonding topic, there are the national rules, and then there can be local ones as well. Depending on where and which panel, things are and can be different.
That is the short answer. Darren may have 'better' USA info, I'm going on how things are here.

Lots of progress, looking good.

Chief, on your foot and body unit, you're not a kid anymore...we seem to break easier with age.
Prayers for good news and a quick recovery.

Junk away. I don't think it would be fair otherwise. Rolls eyes.

Right now I'm using a 60 watt to keep charge up as well as a 400 watt turbine.
So battery charge state is always good.

Lift battery would be nice, but not for my use at this time.
The ease of swapping a dead cell is more important than tanking a lift batt.
I'll do a separate thread on the 'system' as it will hold it all in one spot and may get most of the way in before its too junked up.

I picked it up from a solar wholesaler in Winnipeg.
Details off the top of my head are:
Panels - 4 X 265 watt
Charge controller - 50 amp MPPT

Now I need to switch over to 24 volts on my battery bank as well.
4 X Trojan T-105 6 volt batteries.

Soon to be on order just waiting on prices:
Samlex PST-3000-24 - 3000 watt pure sine wave 24 volt input inverter.
And possibly Iota DLS-27-15, or DLS-27-25 - 24vdc load carrying battery charger.
I need a 24 volt charger, just not set on the one as of today.

This 24 volt thing really turned my world upside down.
Everything in the cabin is on the 12 volt system.
I may keep some up to all of it in tact, and tie it off of 12 volts of battery.
I'm not entirely sure how this will play out.
It complicates the wiring to a large degree keeping what would then be three systems that cannot even tied together separate, so in the end I may abandon the 12 volt stuff entirely. Having said that, some key light fixtures are dual ac and dc lights, so to keep that function would be nice.
Time will tell which road I venture down, but I will do a thread on the 'complete' package.

Needless to say it has been a mucky mess.
This resulted in a lack of pics on my part.

So here is the trench lookin back to the casa.

The stand for the panels is mostly complete, but is sure bigger than I expected.

The end size will be 1.7 meters by 4 meters, which threw me for a loop too, as I'm not very metric with dimensions. This is approximately 13 feet wide and 5 high of panel.

Here are the two cables coming out of the trench at the base. I need to get them into a junction box once I get back out there.

These were taken on day two of the install, it was a good thing I pushed on day one, as we had another 8" of snow fall overnight, and would have made backfilling even more of a mess.

I began by getting the neighbors tractor to aid in trenching.

Awoke to this...

Well frost is upon us and if I wanted the cables buried, there was no time to waste.
So I pressed on and dug the trench and laid in the cables.
In the future is running water, so I put in a 14/3 to run the pump. It gets me that much closer to shore, and with a trench in it made sense to get that far.
The solar panel cable is either #2 or 4 awg. It is overkill for what I'm running but it was originally intended for electrifying my shop at the farm I just sold, so I owned it, and have repurposed it now.
Now with this size I didn't even consider the voltage drop calculations. My array is located 130'+/- from the cabin, and if I needed cable would have done this calculation.

So, it's been a while, but as eluded to on one of big D's posts I'm installing a 1 kW solar setup at the cabin.
Now just thinking out loud I may do a separate thread on he total re-do of my set up.

Let 'er buck!
As long as it's not leaking you're good to go.
I use them all the time, when I need them, and I've used up to four to fill a hole once.
I once punched a piece of rock nearly the size of a golf ball through.
That one I did get a proper repair done on after.

Yes you hit it perfectly.
If one plug is sealed well, I'd say run it, but if it makes you feel better you can get a proper boot/plug repair done. I have one in one of my tires right now, been there for 8-10k.

So long story short its up to you.

2464
I keep wondering why no insulation in the walls of the shed?
I'm with you.

Oh, the light shades should be green to match.

2465
Lookin good chief.
Setting at the cabin after trenching in my solar cables.
Will add it in once I get a bit further along.
Used the tractor so I'm not wore out.
But...it appears we may have up to a foot of snow on the way...
This was not on my plans for the weekend.

Well we're at the end of day four of this low pressure system.

It has been a mix of rain and snow continually since Tuesday night. Temps around 32-36 and nothing but soggy. If I were to guess it would have been around a foot of snow if it weren't for the several inches of rain that accompanied it.
But it seems to be clearing now, just in time for us Canucks thanksgiving weekend.
So I'm currently packing the truck to head to the boat and cabin.
I put the boat cover on Tuesday night so I didn't have to shovel snow out today. Hopefully what was in it is melted now.

Have a great weekend gang!

Kinda took this for granted, I guess my 'normal' trip to the real world is more than some do regularly.
My list of what's always with me.
A gallon of antifreeze
Spare air and fuel filters
Two quarts ATF, and motor oil (I run amsoil so this is why I carry)
Tools socket set and some wrenches
Bug juice if needed
Tow rope and chains
Air compressor and plugs for tires
And then a lot of other crap one needs to cover 200 miles of nothing

Much of what I carry could likely be left behind since you'll have service stations fairly regularly.

I'll check fluids every 10-15k or so unless I have reason to believe there is an issue.
I guess I take it for granted more than most would.

I ran my last out to 50k, with a couple UOA along the way.
It was still good, but I made the same call that it was time.

Just doesn't seem 'right' to not change at some point.
I added about 4 quarts along the way to top up FWIW.

Needless to say, I'm very happy with the setup as well.

Those are a bit nasty, but I've had worse...
My experience with them, once they no longer seal, as those are, you can't get them back 'right'. If funds allow, now is the time to do the disc brake upgrade.
I've been putting it off, but time is near for me to do it.
I have a 2004 with 2500 miles in swamps and underwater, and they work but not so good anymore.

Check out bike bandit dot com.
They sell complete spindles with bearings and all.
I think they may even be as cheap as just the bearings and ball joints.

I haven't used them, but a buddy of mine has over the years.

As for coatings, powder coat would be hard to beat, but may be difficult.
Likely a good tough rust paint, or epoxy paint may hold up too.
Short of that, I'll let the others chime in that know more than I.

Don, in here you will find some installation details. As well you may be able to source the transition pieces you need.

http://www.selkirkcorp.com/SuperVent/Product.aspx?id=100

I don't know what brand you have, this one is very common, but may not be what you have.

I think you need a metal wall 'installation' piece, and I'm not sure about the wooden cradle outside. You may want to look at their options as well.

More info, less DOT this time.

All looks good in any case.

Sums it up well.
We lost so much that day.
As a firefighter I lost 343 brothers and sisters.
My outlook on the problem we face changed that day...

We just had a ceremony at the mess, our day of rest and day off at the mid point of the competition. There was at least three quarters of the competitors and staff in attendance. TJ, the USAR Captain that spoke was humbled and pleasantly surprised to see so many out for it. It was a very somber service and now to think, it is part of history for our kids, the new recruits to the armed forces. All of us here remember vividly where we were and what we were doing, but the new recruits now would have been as young as three, and not remember.

As TJ said, it is our job to pass this on to those younger than us so as it will never be forgotten.

Well turns out it was front ujoint. I knew the noise was at the front, then after leaving the parts store it made the squeak for the first time in two days decelerating... Found a good spot and checked, yup toast. So in any case I'm ready for the alternator to crap out now.  8)

I gotta say though, it was like the alternator bearings were getting sluggish enough to squeal the belt for a few seconds then clear up. When I caught it slowing down I new right then it was a ujoint. Oh well, 222k on factory stuff I'm on borrowed time as I see it.

Well time and miles are against me apparently.
Noticed a funny belt squeal driving in the city with windows down.
So, since I've got 222k miles on original everything under the hood, I picked up parts.
I have changed idler and tensioner once, but have them again, belt and alternator.

I hope to make it home where the power steering pump is, and only tear into this once.
But being a random, non discernible intermittent squeal, I'll take my chance and let fate get me home or have the culprit self identify. Lol.

I can fix what I know is broke, and have tools a plenty with me, so no biggie if it packs in on the road.

In concrete I use the threaded anchors 3/8" or 1/2" bolts. Need a good hammer drill for the 3/4 or whatever the 1/2" anchor uses.
On wood floors, I try to find a floor joist with at least one row and drive a 3 1/2-4" 3/8" lag bolt.
If possible hitting a wall stud adds security as well.

Looking at the picture of the pipe you salvaged, you'll have enough if you do go straight up.
Being that you will likely end up in a corner with the stove, you need to remember that the top of the pipe need to be "X" distance above the roof to allow the draft to work properly.

I think you have enough for that, only, and not nearly enough to run up the wall and then above roofline.

So your thoughts about straight up just make sense.
Run the flue up through to second floor, use single wall or even double to allow the most heat transfer. Then tie to the insulated stuff you have and done.
You'll have to make or buy the flanges and trim, but no real biggie.

Don, do like Shwan says and go straight up through the roof.
I try to burn only hardwoods to keep the creosote down.
I cleaned my chimney last weekend prepping for the burn season. My 6" flue was 4 1/2", full of it.
I reworked my pipe to have a clean out tee as mine exits the rear of the stove.
It is so much easier cleaning a straight shot than fishing the brush around corners.
Now I drop the bottom off the tee, add a garbage bag and voila ready to go.

Straight is simple. Straight is great. Elbows add problems, avoid if you can.
And with the outlet on top, go straight up. Too easy.
