TEXAS SIZE JEEP.....
« on: May 08, 2015, 08:22:08 AM »
Per Don's request, I will keep a separate thread for this thing...

Here are the basics...

1987 Jeep Wrangler
351 Windsor stock motor / carbureted
C6 3 speed Shorty Transmission
2.5 ton Rockwell Axles with front locking hubs
Custom 4 link lift with straps and Nitrogen shocks
Cyclone Gear Box
Single pinion brake

I don't know a single thing about the motor or the transmission.  If anyone does, I'm all ears to learn more about it.

The original owner spent two years building this jeep.  He did a complete frame off job.  It originally had a Dana 60 up front and 14 bolt rear with 39.5" Boggers.  He upgraded to the top loaders about three weeks ago.  It currently is running a set of 14.9x24 R1 BKT tractor tires.  14.9 " wide, roughly 51" tall.  On a set of custom cut 16" wide x 24" diameter wheel.  I grabbed a set of 20" wide by 15" diameter aluminum wheels with the same bolt pattern for these top loaders.  Planning on picking up a set of 44" boggers to install on them.  This way I will have different options, depending on where we are riding...

Thanks Ash

351W motor...I built a couple and Duane has a 400HP one sitting in his Cobra replica. Good torque motor. The C6 is a good trans, a rough equivalent of the GM Turbo 400.

With all that tire going on, you will need all that torque!

Going from a 51" tire to a 44" is going to be like going from a 3.07 gear to a 5.13!

Interesting deep water/mud contraption you have there...We'll be watching it grow

Rockwells, nice!

Makes you wonder why the guy did all that (Nice) work, then turned around and sold it??

His loss, your gain. Gonna pull a Cat rubber track skid steer with that?

Well, here is what I was told, take it for what it's worth....

This jeep came from South Florida.  It was built to be a beach cruiser, not a mudder.  Well, over the two year period, the mud scene has exploded.  This guy has a shop, and builds these toys for other people.  This was his personal build.  After doing a little at a time, between everyone else's projects, he finally got this jeep to where he wanted it.  But, during that time, and after working and building big block trucks with huge tires, he decided he wants to build a mud truck.  So, he decided to sale the beach cruiser to start building a crew cab big block mudder.  More room, bigger tires, bigger motor, ect....

Sold the jeep to begin the funds for the next project....

Time will tell.

I drove it around the pasture last night for a little while.  Left it sitting at idle.  Never ran hot.  No leaks.  Everything feels tight and strong...

Nothing legal about this vehicle...  Has to be towed if it is going anywhere besides my pasture...  But, you could install disc brakes at all four corners, add a horn, and a few other things, maybe get it to pass inspection, then register it...  But, too much trouble.  It's simply a toy, nothing more...

Nice video.  It will take a lot of tire to make this thing float.  Those 2.5 tons are not light!!

So, just ordered a set of Flowmaster super 10's.  I don't have a clue what mufflers are on the jeep now, but they are entirely too quiet.  So, I will be pulling those off and going with the loudest that flowmaster has to offer.  Most guys run open headers, kicked out the side of the engine compartment.  I don't want that much noise...  Just enough to wake the neighbors...   8)

Next issue that needs to be solved is the carb.  It is currently running an edelbrock 600.  At steep angles, it runs out of fuel.  Does not flood, but runs out.  Everyone is telling me to go with the Holley 670 Truck Avenger.  It will fix the issue of steep angles.  Anyone want to chime in here or have an opinion because I have never dealt with one.   :(

I do remember having that issue with my old blazer, and I think I heard something about edelbrock having some sort of an off road kit available.

The edelbrock vs the Holley/Roch is a much better off road carb. The side floats are the trick to that. I think the off road kit will help, but at angles a carb will have issues.

Second that, Don.  Given the simplicity of the FI systems nowadays, that is the way to go.  Look at some of the new holley systems too

Exactly!  That Holley system is almost a 1 day bolt on affair. When it first came out, I had a big cammed (Real) 1970 BOSS 302 Mustang. Darned thing wouldn't idle hardly at all on a carb. I swapped to that Holley pro-jection thing and just like that it was singin' a new tune. No more fouled plugs, no more stalling, no bad manners. It just worked like it should.

Yeah the new generation of kids modding cars doesn't know what its like to experience the joy (???) of spending an entire weekend pulling plugs, changing jets, changing power valves, secondary vacuum actuator springs and other fine tuning of a real carburetor.

Ok guys, slow down...  I'm not the fastest.  I have dealt with small carburetors, on atv's, forever.  Trucks, never even owned one with a carburetor.

So, you are suggesting I go with the off road kit for the edelbrock?  It would definitely be a cheaper route.

I was suggesting this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-550-405/overview/

But those kits are now over 2K so maybe just a carb and learn to tune it, and don't drive upside down

Ken, right now there is mud everywhere!  On bottom, on the sides, on hills, bottom of hills, even on top of the hills, over logs, under logs, on top of the house, under the clouds.....   :o

We average 18" of rainfall Jan-may.

We were at 36" Tuesday.  We have had almost two more inches since....  and a lot more coming this weekend...  Should be pushing 40" by June 1.

all good here.  no flooding locally for us.  We are all on high ground.  Main issue is the ground is so wet, we cant do any dirt jobs.  have 12 jobs on hold right now that we have, but can't start the first one because of the rain.  They are showing the next 10 days to be minimal rain chances, sun, and heat.  So, guess we will start to dry out just a little bit.   8)

What about dozing a path for a fence, removing trees?

I had a Carter 650 on my wagoneer, (early pre-edelbrock buy out) and did the off road kit back in '03. it worked pretty good even at higher elevations but I still had to fiddle with the mixture if I was climbing decently steep hills. it's worth the investment IMHO.

After doing a lot of reading and research, it would seem that the offroad kit offered for the edelbrock carb I'm running will only help for bumps and very mild offroad action.  It will not help on off camber situations.  My sources are telling my to go with the Rochester Quadra Jet Carb...  Will run in any position except upside down...

I can attest to that. I've had a Q-jet on my '73, then an 800 holley double pump, then an edelbrock, then a larger edelbrock, and back to the original q-jet. She has been in some pretty knarlly stuff for a truck.
