Knives,Axes,Tomahawks..... oh my!
« on: October 27, 2014, 03:47:01 PM »
It was brought to my attention, that we are lacking a thread to discuss the pros/cons of the knives that are out on the market. So if you have a knife (folder,fixed,full-tang,rat-tailed), ax or tomahawk that you want to show off and give a review on post it up!

To help out here's an outline.

Manufacturer:
Model # or Name:
Price:
Specs:
How you use it:
Pros:
Cons:

And naturally pics, so we can all enjoy.

What a coincidence, I just happened to receive this in the mail today. I've been using fixed blade Kershaws for about 25 years now, mostly because of cost, and it usually takes 3 or 4 knives to dress and bone out an elk. I decided to purchase a couple better blades (sub $150.00 range) for the task and this is number 1:

Spyderco Bill Moran FB02, fixed 3-7/8" drop point blade. 8-1/16" overall.
VG-10 steel
Kydex sheath w/adjustable G-Tec clip
Cost: this one was $90ish from Amazon.
Note: scary sharp right out of the box.

so I thought I could definitely add something to this thread.  I actually carry and or use 4 different knives on a daily basis.  in the picture below you can see all 4 of those knives.  here are the brands, models, where they are worn/kept and what they are used for.

the first one or top one is a: Ka-Bar Becker BK2 Campanion Fixed Blade Knife and it is stored in my go bag or assault pack, it has 4x25’ long pieces of 550 cord braided together for emergency situations when some type of cordage is needed or required.

Specs:
Weight 1.0 lb.
Steel 1095 Cro-Van
Blade Type Fixed Blade Lock Style N/A
Blade Thickness 0.250
Measurements Blade length 5-1/4"; Overall length 10-1/2" Grind Flat
Edge Angles 20 Degrees
Handle Material Zytel
Shape Drop Point HRC 56-58
Stamp KA-BAR Becker Butt Cap/Guard N/A
NSN 1095-01-493-1798 KNIFE-COMBAT

The second knife is a: Benchmade 9051SBK AFO II AUTOMATIC - UTILITY Combo Edge/BK 1 Black Finish.  this knife is worn on my belt for everyday use.  This knife was given to me by a very dear friend who at the time was the NCOIC of an ODB from 3rd group.  This knife has served me very well for the last 8 years and 3 deployments.  This knife is by far the best knife I have ever owned or used.

Specs:
Category End Use: Tactical/Military/Law Enforcement
Blade Steel: 154CM
Rc Hardness: 58-60
Blade Style: Utility
Handle Material: Hard Anodized 6061-T6 Aluminum

Blade Length: 3.56"
Blade Thickness: 0.125"
Length Closed: 4.95"
Weight: 5.80 oz.
Sheath Type: Black Ballistic Nylon
Made in: U.S.A.

The third knife or tool is a: leatherman supertool 300.  This knife/tool is carried right next to my benchmade and is used for everyday uses.  I originally started off with the plain old supertool.  but over time as parts of it broke or got worn out and sent in for warranty/repair, I have actually been upgraded twice by leatherman company to the new supertool 300.  I really cant say anything bad about this piece of equipment.

The fourth knife is a: Large TDI Law Enforcement Tanto, Serrated.  This knife is stored on my kit.  This knife has many uses but in reality it is a personal protection knife.  Here is a short video from the designer of the knife.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZivRcSnPyw

Specs:
Blade Length: 3-11/16"
Overall Length: 7-9/16"
Blade Style: Tanto, Serrated Edged Black Blade

I'll have to post up some of mine when I dig them out of a spare duffel. So this is just a bump...

Being an Office dweller most of my days my selection will be quite a bit different than most I would imagine. These are just some that I thought might be of interest. Out of the 7 I use the little pocket knife the most. It’s about wore out so I will be looking for a replacement.

1)   Manufacturer: Western (Prior to Case purchasing them) Boulder , CO
Model # or Name: W39
Price: About $50.00 now
Specs: Overall 9.5” Fixed Blade 5” Full Tang
How you use it: It has been a vault queen for 30 years. Was Grandfathers.
Saved it just in case I lost the other one just like it.

2)   Manufacturer: Western (Prior to Case purchasing them) Boulder , CO
Model # or Name: F39
Price: About $25.00 now
Specs: Overall 9.5” Fixed Blade 5” Full Tang
How you use it: This has been my go to fixed blade knife for years. Used hunting Elk, Deer, Antelope, and ground hogs… 
Pros: Stays very sharp. Nice curve so you can gut and skin with same knife. Handle doesn’t absorb any fluids. Sheath has nice snap at top that is tight so blade doesn’t slide up exposing the blade. Has been a great knife. Considered VINTAGE now!
Cons: Handle can get slippery when wet.

3)   Manufacturer: Boker Solingen, Germany
Model # or Name: Full Top Lock Auto Cocobolo
Price: $80.00
Specs: Overall 7.75” Blade 3.375”
How you use it: Safe queen
Pros: Nice and heafty. I really like how force full it opens up.
Cons: Too big for front pant pocket. Ok for belt.

4)   Manufacturer: Hubertus Solingen Rostfrei Geschmiedet - W. Germany
Model # or Name: Lever Lock Auto Stag Handle
Price: $165.00
Specs: Overall 7.75” Blade 3.5”
How you use it: Another Safe queen

5)   Manufacturer: Benchmade
Model # or Name: 154CM Auto
Price: $110.00
Specs: Overall 7.5” Blade 3.25” Clip. Modified drop point.
How you use it: This is my carry when not in office.
Pros: Easy to open and unlock with one hand. Doesn’t unlock on its own. I like the part serrated blade. Carries a very sharp blade for a long time in between sharpening. Has had a lot of use and no blade wiggle. I’m left handed and the controls seem to still work well.
Cons: Too big for inside pocket on dress pants.

6)   Manufacturer: Boker
Model # or Name: Magnum
Price: $45.00
Specs: Overall 8” Blade 3.25” Tanto Auto
How you use it: One of my daily carries. I don’t use as much as other.
Pros: Very sharp. Easy to open with one hand. Tanto blade is sturdy with no wiggle.
Cons: Auto lock is loose. Will slide back and forth easy. Will unlock itself and open in pocket.

7)   Manufacturer: Microtech
Model # or Name: Mini U.D.T. 2643 Auto
Price: $159.00
Specs: Overall 5.625” Blade 2.375” drop point. Serrated
How you use it: In my pocket most every day. Box cutter to gutting fish.
Pros: Easy to carry in dress pants. Not too noticeable when opening or using in office surroundings. No blade wiggle at all.
Cons: Getting worn out. Spring will not throw all the way open even when well lubed. Lock slide is not smooth.

Nice collection guys. Benchmade is still on my list of must have's.

Here's my new favorite, and now my EDC. It has one of the best (some argue THE best) stainless blades:

Make: Spyderco
Model: Manix 2
Blade steel: S110V
Blade Length: 3.37" (86 mm)
Cutting Edge: 2.88" (73 mm)
Overall Length: 8.03" (204 mm)
Closed Length: 4.66" (118 mm)
Blade Thickness: 0.125" (3.2 mm)
Weight: 2.9 oz. (82 g)
Handle material: FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon)

Pros:
#1-If you want to polish a blade with 100k grit diamond dust so you can split hairs, this is the type of steel, and it holds that edge VERY well. I strope this thing about once a week to keep it up, and use it daily. Seems to be pretty tough as well, even though I try not to pry with it, or use it as a screwdriver (very often).
#2-The choils for your thumb and index finger seem to be perfectly placed (for me at least).
#3-The large hole for "flipping" makes it a breeze to open quickly.

Cons:
#1-Even though the handle is really tough (from what I've read), it feels cheap.
#2-It is a bear to sharpen. It came shaving sharp out of the box but I thought I could do
better. But after making it worse, over a 2 hr period, I kept trying several times after work each night, and eventually pulled it off. (I am no expert by any means, but sharpening this knife sure taught me some things....like the fact that I won't ever let it get completely dull!)
By comparison, the VG-10 blade I resharpened, took about 20 minutes to get it to drop cut paper mache.
#3-Price. These are running about $150 and it appears like they're getting harder to find.

Just wanted to get some pics up. I will outline what we have here this eve-
from left to right, top to bottom

the ranger short stop by Tops Knives
1095 high carbon steel, linen micarta handle 3 1/8" blade
I carry this on my person as an EDC defensive knife horizontally right over my belt buckle. $90.00

The Coye Ridgeback designed by Bill Coye, down the road in Tulsa OK. distributed by Boker.
440C Stainless, milled G10 scales 3 3/8" blade
When I get a good sheath made for it, I may carry it in the same manner as the ranger, the handle is a little more bulky however.  Main reason I bought it was because it looked cool and felt great in the hand. $85

The second two are Boker's but Im honestly not really sure on the specs of them. I have a local store who is close to the boker CEO so all of their discontinued lines wind up on his shelves and its a grand day when he calls me to tell me he has new merch.
I carry one lashed to the shoulder of my swat loadout and the other in the custom leather sheath my dad made on my ankle for duty.

Recon Tanto by Cold Steel
AUS 8A, Kray Ex handle, 7" blade
This is the camping, fishing, garage, do all hack a coconut knife! 70$??

Zero Tolerance 0170
Sandvik 14C28N DLC coated, G10 machined handle, 6.12"
This is lashed to my critical incident response bag and so far it hasn't fallen out or anything so I'd say it's good to go!

:) :) My fav- Boker Orca!
X15T.N, Kray ex handle, 5 1/4" blade.
If you aren't familiar with the steel, it is the same stuff the ball bearings in jet engines are made of I guess, It's damn hard. This is my, I'm feeling chuck norris today, headed to the farm, need to belt a large fixed blade knife!. Its heavy in the handle but hacks well. Speaking of hacking, it has a sharpened edge along the back side of the blade for hacking so youre killing side remains serviceable. However, It is damn hard and takes an edge well and keeps it. Designed and issued for German Special Forces, GSG-9. It's made for land or sea applications. This was another pick me up from the boker guy. They are in the 2-250 range if you can find them. This knife is discontinued but there is a "orca Gen 2" out there. I love this knife btw.

Will get to the folders tomorrow maybe! headed out in the fray gents...

Nice collection

K-bar look alike. Just watched an old Robert Mitchum movie where he plays a Marine Corporal in WW2. He uses that thing on some Japanese...

I want to say I have one of your lock blades hanging on my vest somewhere...

Heres a few I have handy and use the most.

I'll have to dig up the specs later and edit.

left to right:

Cold Steel Counter Tac II - It has a neck chain and sheath.  When CCW rules don't allow CC, I carry this under my shirt. quick lift of the shirt and I can yank it out quickly and it's not apparent in my pocket.  Its flat on one side and beveled on the other with double edges.  Nasty.  I have its big brother (Counter Tac) laced up in my Bates boots.

Specification:Blade Length: 3 3/8"
Overall Length:6 3/4"
Steel: Japanese Aus 8A Stainless
Weight: 2.2 oz
Blade Thickness: 4 mm
Handle: 4 1/2" Long Kray-Ex™

About $100

Zero Tolerance ZT boot knife 0150.  Nice but I don't carry it and can't really comment.  Quite frankly forgot I had it.

About $180
    Overall Length:7.50"
    Blade Length:3.50"
    Blade Thickness:0.13"
    Blade Material:CPM-S30V
    Blade Style:Dagger

    Knife Type:Fixed Blade
    Brand:Zero Tolerance
    Model:Boot Knife
    Model Number:0150
    Designer:Tim Galyean
    Country of Origin:USA
    Best Use:Tactical

Emerson Karambit.  My new all time favorite personal defense item.  Good for nothing but killing.  Scary lookin, scary sharp and perfect for my chosen defensive posture.  Its faster than any auto matic because as you deploy it from your pocket using your index finger in the big loop it catches on the pocket and it is deployed in a reverse grip by the time your hand is out of your pocket.  Continuing that upward movement allows a swift cut under the axillary artery in the arm pit, which is lethal within a very short period of time.

$275 (although I had to wait 6 months to get it because its in such demand.  On eBay they sell for much more)
Handles

Weight    3.6
Finger Hole Diameter    .9 in.

Benchmade a mini barrage axis 585, I believe.  Its one of my working knives.  Usually carried in the left pocket while the Emerson is in the right.

$140
 Blade Length: 2.91"

Last  is the SOG TAC auto.  My favorite work knife.  The knife I used to think was fast to deploy until I got the Karambit.  Now its just convenient to open when working and I love the customer service.  I've broken 4 clips in 5 years and they always send me a new one immediately free of charge.

Figured I would bump this back up with my small collection.  I'll post the ones I know for sure the model and details.  The UP of MI is a hot bed for custom knives.  There are several manufacturers within a 100 mile radius all putting out superb blades.  When I lived there and every time I visit I seem to acquire another one.  Sometimes I buy it or sometimes it hitches a ride home with me from my dads house.

First is my pride and joy.

Bark River Bravo 1

Overall Length: 9.065in/23.03cm
Blade Length: 4.25in/10.79cm
Blade Steel: A-2, CPM 3V, S25VN
Steel Thickness: .215in/5.5mm
Weight: 7.375 oz
Hardness: 59RC

Bark River Little Creek A2

Overall Length: 5.5 in/13.97 cm
Blade Length: 2.65 in/6.73 cm
Cutting Edge: 2.3 in/5.84 cm
Blade Steel: A-2, CPM 3V
Steel Thickness: .145 in/3.68 mm
Weight: 2.125 oz
Hardness: 58RC

Bark River Hunstman

Overall Length: 7 in/17.78 cm
Blade Length: 3.25 in/8.26 cm
Blade Steel: A-2
Steel Thickness: .187 in/4.7 mm
Weight: 3.5oz
Hardness: 58RC

Commemorative Bark River

Don't actually know what model this one is.
My dad won it at a Turkey Banquet some years ago.

Random Northwoods Kinife

Rapid River Knifeworks Mini Caper 154CM

Hess Knifeworks Mini Caper

Ontario RAT 3

Buck 119

i think thats all of my fixed blades except my Mora which is MIA after the move.  Now i have to wipe these back down with oil and put them away again.  Need every excuse I can to get them out.

Nice Blaine.

I got a newsletter email with specials on these Boker Autos

At $38 each, I couldn't pass up buying a few.  Seems like everytime I'm at the ranch, I'm using my good knives like hammers and chisels.  Rather have some cheap ones to abuse.

Speaking of cheap knives, anyone see that Rambo lookin' "Survival" knife they sell over at Harbor Freight? It's like a foot long, actually bigger than that. One day I'm in there getting something and I see that thing on sale for $7.99! Right beside it is a machete for $5.99.

So I picked up both and gave one to each of the boys. That darned Rambo knife is still perfect after a summer of hacking down limbs and trees all over the farm

Update. Got these in today. They also threw in a free shemagh!  Looks really threatening with the purple golf shirt. LOL

The seem to be built well and are full auto which is now legal in texas.  Glad they recognize I'm able to be trusted with a full auto knife as well as a glock and 14 rounds of 230gn hollow point

Yeah, the cat ran and hid... but that's about it.

Sorry. in keeping with the OPs intent, here are the specs

    Overall Length:7.625"
    Blade Length:3.25"
    Cutting Edge:3.00"
    Blade Thickness:0.12"
    Blade Material:AUS-8
    Blade Style:Dagger
    Blade Grind:Flat
    Finish:Satin
    Edge Type:Plain
    Handle Length:4.375"
    Handle Thickness:0.67"
    Handle Material:Aluminum
    Color:OD Green
    Weight:3.70 oz.
    User:Right Hand
    Pocket Clip:Tip-Up
    Knife Type:Automatic
    Opener:Push Button
    Lock Type:Plunge Lock
    Brand:Boker
    Model:Kalashnikov
    Model Number:01KALS-BHQ3
    Country of Origin:Taiwan
    Best Use:Everyday Carry
    Product Type:Knife

I gave $35 each for them.  So far, I like them. Cheap and well built so I can use them to pry and bang on stuff without worrying too much.  Only nit pic thing is the button operation is a little gritty on the open.  Probably get better with use.

I have one of those. For that price why not?

$38/each is a great price for those.

Man the action on this knife looks so smooth.   I want to give it a purchase.  In the view of cost and value in knifes. It's not an expensive knife to  be sure

I would say that it's a pretty good letter opener. As far as utility is concerned though, I can't imagine an acrylic handle would be very rugged or offer much purchase. The grip action is intriguing but I'm curious if the blade locks in any hand position. Boker is a great brand. Generally the ones under $100 are China imports if that matters to you. Check out the ZT 0900. It's a little more money but if you want a smooth consistent action, small enough for EDC, but big enough for utility or defense, it is just about perfect

I have had a ZT in my pocket. It's a smooth knife but the design is bulky and doesn't blend into a pocket very well.
My everyday this past two years has been the Gerber propel down range auto.  I love the quality of blade and it sharpens easy enough.  I did some modifications like sanding down the rough edges but other then that.

It's been a really nice knife

Got a great deal on this from Midway- $30 and free shipping!

Browning Black Label Tactical Blade
(Grip Change so switched to new style handles I guess)
Full Tang, Hollow Ground, Partially Serrated 8Cr13MoV Stainless.

Good heft, but not heavy, good retention sheath with adjustable belt lock.  Originally set-up handle down orientation on shoulder strap of BOB.  Adjusting things and checking fit, ergonomics of that set-up and ease of draw......boy this looks sharp.....that retention strap hangs awkwardly  n the way of the blade as I draw it....did I say it was SHARP........as I sliced through the safety retainer strap in a one handed draw!  NUTS!  Now I gotta find a replacement......at least they make it replicable it appears.....mounted with a screw on the backside!

Update:  Contacted Browning about the loose nut at the hilt of the knife (me) and they're sending me two spare sheath retention straps free of charge!  Gotta love a company who stands by there product in spite of the "idiot" factor known as operator error!  LOL!  ::)

I'll post up my latest splurge knee jerk reaction purchase. I most likely will never use it other that a around the house pocket knife but I have been wanting an OTF for a long time and if Hillary get's in the Oval Office these will probably be banned as well. (At least that's the poor excuse I used to buy it.)  :o

Overall Length:8.91"
Blade Length:3.95"
Blade Thickness:0.118"
Blade Material:D2
Blade Style:Spear Point
Blade Grind:Flat
Finish:Black
Edge Type:Plain
Handle Length:4.80"
Handle Thickness:0.90"
Handle Material:Aluminum
Color:OD Green
Weight:5.0 oz.
User:Right Hand
Pocket Clip:Tip-Down
Knife Type:Double-Action OTF Automatic
Opener:Thumb Slide
Lock Type:None
Brand:Benchmade
Model:Infidel
Model Number:3300BKOD-1101
Country of Origin:USA
Best Use:Tactical
Product Type:Knife

I have only used it a couple of times. Very large knife handle. Edges of the handle are very crisp. Fairly heavy as well for a "pocket clip" knife. The action works very well. Came very sharp from factory. Nylon sheath is a little odd with it snap over design. Will probably not use it. Just the clip.
