Suppressed 22 options?
« on: August 11, 2018, 11:15:43 PM »
Now that my suppressor is out of jail I’m looking for a factory threaded, 22 bolt gun to play around with and to use for dispatching critters in the yard. I have several 22 rifles already but non that I am willing to have cut on.

Place local to me has the Ruger American compact with threaded barrel on sale for $279. I also saw a Savage for $239. What else should I be looking at that is comparable to those two?

Rugged Razor 7.62. It was last years Christmas present from my wife. We bought it during a promotion last fall so it had an two additional 1/2x28 muzzle devices and a 5.56 end cap included with it.

Just saw that Marlin also makes a rimfire with threaded barrel. I have one of these in a 17hmr and that thing is incredibly accurate. I hate that the barrel is 4-5.5” longer than the Ruger and Savage. https://www.marlinfirearms.com/rimfire/xt-series/model-xt-22rz

I know you said bolt but take a look at the Remington 597-aac-sd. Designed for suppressor with 16 inch threaded barrel.

I have one and it’s my second favorite weapon, with the ruger mkII pistol with suppressor being number 1

I’ve read a couple places that semi autos are louder than locked breach actions when suppressed. That’s the main reason I’m looking at bolt actions.

While this is true it is mainly the mechanical sound of the action cycling.

E.g my ruger pistol is more quiet when I hold my thumb over the bolt, but it is imperceptible unless you are using subsonic ammo. With supersonic ammo you still get the crack of the sound barrier being broken and it dwarfs the sound of the bolt cycling.

Using subsonic will put a smile on your face even with the bolt cycling.

No ballistic sounds escape from the bolt. The bullet and pressure have passed by the time the bolt unlocks.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought some of the sound of the powder ignition escaped out of the action. I did see today that ruger makes a 10/22 takedown with a threaded barrel. That may sway me to a semi-auto. I’ll price one when I get off work Tuesday.

Certain military folks used suppressed ruger .22 pistols for work within a crowd... or so I've read

The suppressed 10/22 my wife has is a lil funny with subsonic ammo FWIW> (usually cycles,  sometimes doesn't)

TRN I have the same Ruger pistol.... fun lil toy with a suppressor.

I decided on the Ruger American. I would’ve bought a 10/22 takedownbut they didn’t have one in stock. https://youtu.be/-nkZ-dyIsEk
It’s a good bit quieter than the video makes it sound.

I really need to get one. I can shoot in the garage and no one else can hear it, but boy is it loud in the garage. It would be nice to do some shooting and not have my ears ringing. Would make it easier teaching the kids too. Plus there is the cool factor.

Good pair of ear muffs are your ears best friend. I wear hearing aids, shooting without muffs most likely the cause. Even with the aids I have a hard time hearing and the ringing never stops.

This is money well spent.

If you order through LaRue you’ll get a bottle of Dillo Dust and other goodies in the box. Mine are 7 years old now and still work like new. I don’t shoot anything without them.

One of the reason I wanted a suppressor is so that my daughter won’t be startled by the noise when she starts shooting.

both of my AAC cans clearly state not to run 22lr out of them despite one being a 556 can. In my not so expert understanding of ballistics, i'd venture to guess that damage can occur.

but that's just me.

Hmmm, I’m wondering if crap build up is more prevalent with 22LR (low velocity etc). Caliber diameter obviously isn’t the issue.

Could it be lead fouling from the 22LR that is the issue?  Not too many people using fully jacketed 22LR out there.

i'd think that, too. 22lr is dirty ammo.

I believe this is more of the issue. I didn’t read anything about avoiding 22lr in the literature I received. Maybe I’ll look again or send he company an email just to make sure.

I called Rugged and they do not recommend shooting rimfire calibers though their centerfire cans since they are so dirty.

But....this thing is rated for full-auto, belt fed, up to 30-06 and 300RUM in bolt action or other repeater. I don’t reckon an ultrasonic cleaner will hurt it.

That’s why most 22lr cans disassemble for cleaning.

Not sure if ultrasonic cleaner will remove all the deposits but it might be worth checking out

Hate when I miss a good thread. I got a Savage (22lr) and a Ruger (300aac) the same time last year. They are both great rifles but I really like the accutriger on the savage. Only dislike on the ruger is NOW it will take a regular AR magazine and mine takes the rotary.

I would love to suppress both, but not going to happen in this state for sure.

Yep, 22ammo is dirty (powder) but I always get coated bullets. I think that helps overall with the barrels too.

Yeah JR, we all know how dangerous “silencers” are....

Imagine how bad that shooting would have been at the horse track had the thug wanting to get into the Ice Cube concert had a suppressor.
