New truck options
« on: April 01, 2018, 10:40:52 AM »
Ok folks.  Looking for knowledge.

Since the creation of this site I have all but abandoned the others.   Good yes learning not so much

I would like to hear what the known issues are in these newer GM diesels. Beside the electrical parts Don hates.

My current truck is the LBZ which at the time was the truck to buy.  What is the next truck?

3/4 ton 6.2 gasser

Unless you constantly tow more than 10,000#

Maintenance and reliability issues aren’t worth a diesel

In the last 16 months I’ve purchased a 2016 Ram with the 5.7L Hemi (395hp), which I sold, and now own a 2011 F150 with the 5.0L (365hp). The Ford is currently listed on Craigslist. Both of them are much nicer trucks than my LB7 but they both just sat/do sit in my driveway because I didn’t like the feel of the naturally aspirated gas engine. If you like driving your LBZ, I’d stick with diesel.

I do not constantly tow more than 10,000 lbs  and have to disagree with you guys. I had the 6.0 GM gas in 3 pickups and had to replace exhaust manifolds and other system parts because the heat from towing destroyed them. I got very tired of listening to the engine trying to destroy its self going uphill. Plenty of power but if you had to slow down for any reason it was very hard to get the rpm back up. Gas mileage sucked towing anything, heavy or not. Other than the problems with the DEF system on my 2011, the diesel has been very reliable and maintenance does not seam any more expensive or time consuming. I keep the engine as it came from the factory, and have the maintenance done as recommended. I think the bigger issue is cost to get into the diesel to start with. Take out a longer loan or pay more each month. If you can afford a diesel and tow at all, it is a better choice. Just have to be a bit careful where the front tires go as the diesel is heavier and you can  get stuck more easily.

I think I am sold on diesel, can’t move away from that or GM.

The new job puts a dump trailer and a job trailer on my truck all week long

What is the issue with def on the 2011,

Dave, I had 3 or 4 trips back to the dealer with DEF issue problems. Poor quality warning mostly. The dealer stayed on the problems and solved the issue with sensor replacement. NOX sensors as I remember, but am betting Ken knows which ones are the problem. My  concern was having the thing go into limp mode because the computer thought the def was bad. Never did go into limp and I enjoyed the truck towing or not. On my 2016 the main computer had to be replaced with only a couple thousand miles on it. That could have happened with either gas or diesel. No issues at all since then.

Adding that option almost makes up the cost difference between gas and diesel. And boy howdy the repair cost will go up after adding the extra power to the gas engine.

They solved most of the issues with the '12 Lmls from everything I've read. I know a couple guys with'13s that haven't had any issues past 100k.
They were just having issues with the '11s because they pushed the Def system to market too fast before working all the bugs out.
I would recommend '12 or newer just to be safe.
... but I would still keep the LBZ. You'll regret getting rid of it imo. They will take they're place in history as being one of the best diesels, along side of the 12v.... again, imo.

Dave, didn’t you just put a bunch of money in the transmission etc? Other than the paint the rest of that stuff isn’t too hard to replace.

When I had my 2000 dually painted I had it done in sections. Such as one time it went in and had one of the fiberglass fenders repaired & the tailgate. Another time it went in & had the hood refinished. I did it as I made money to have the work done. I owned the truck outright and the drivetrain was solid, so the rest was little stuff.

Dave not sure how your new job is structured (if you’re a contractor etc? Self employed?) however fixing equipment is 100% write off year you do it. Buying a new vehicle is not the same on taxes.

Buying a house, and changing jobs. I’d keep what you have for a while. Pay cash for your next truck. That’s when you’ll know you’re ready for a new truck.

You can still start Dave’s Framing and Nuisance Animal Control and write off the suppressor in your LBZ. :beercheers:
Seriously though, if I am remembering the right truck id say it’s still nice and capable enough to have a few repairs and stay in service.

This!!! Or maybe wait until the house is finished.  Is there a need for a newer truck, such as the current is breaking down and leaving you stranded?

Things you most likely already know, but with the house and job change your credit won’t be it’s best and the bank may not want to lend the money because your too new job.  All a moot point if your buying the truck cash and trade. I say these things because I wish many times over I’d have listened to these kind of comments.

dave, this is spot on advice.

if my paid off LBZ at 186,000 miles didn't start giving me engine electrical issues, and i didnt have to make a 4000 mile round trip halfway across this country and back pulling a 28 foot trailer that contained our entire house.....i would have kept it.  i had a lot of money invested i that great truck, but i needed reliability at the time and i also dont have a full house and in the middle of trying to buy a new house and change careers?

i would 3rd/4th or whatever you keeping the LBZ and spending a few $$$ on the easy maintenance/upkeep parts.

I think this will be the way I go, order some parts, order some raptor liner and get my truck sanded up to pInt.

Been using it at work and I need to work something out for that also

24 x 6 metal studs. And some shorter in the bottom of the trailer

Na she isn’t holdin much weight on the truck,  I had to crank the torsion bars for the tires last year.  Never turned it back down.   You know how I like to blind people with my head lights.

I was actually pretty surprised how even that trailer sits.   The two axles seem to be at that perfect spot to hold most of the weight.

I had 7000ish in it on Saturday and didn’t squat the truck. For sure felt it on my right Pedal

Looks to me like you need to raise the trailer's hitch up and put more weight on the front axle.
That trailer is what, about 5k empty? edited...I think mine is 4200

Much to my my disdain I need airbags for my truck. I hate doing what other people recommend lol

This is what I have in mind since the new truck plan has been put on hold ( thanks covid-19).

Looking at these

Air Lift 57275 LoadLifter 5000 Series Rear Air Spring Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CFQ2XM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_bXGmFbC9T9B4W

Air Lift 52420 Air Lift Spacers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079WW31VC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_D3GmFb3R2C93X

Does anyone have a reason to buy the bags with the rubber bump stops in them for the extra $$$ the kit has me remove the stock bumps out

I had been looking at this exact kit.  At some point I still plan to get it. Without the stops the bags could be damaged if they were ran empty. The bags with the stops allow you to run them empty and protect the bag from damage should they be ran empty.

I have run that kit without internal bump stops since what, 2012???

Except for where my U-bolt flip wore a hole in a couple of bags, they have worked flawlessly.

Those and a rear sway bar has my lifted truck handling better on curvy roads than a stocker in my view.

Would also  HIGHLY recommend these:

Boy are they proud of that little keyed system $300 bucks for some plates.

I think I’ll be ordering the bags without the bumps in them.  See no major reason for them

I'm running the wireless Airlift system on Firestone bags. Makes life easier when hooking up trailers (don't have to wind the jacks as much).
Problem is I mounted the solenoid assembly behind the rear axle and the receiver signal won't reach the driver seat. Gotta hold the remote out the window like a goofball.

Yeah. You may recall I built my own fill/drain system on the dually. Lots of work. Manifold with fill valve , drain valve, flow control orifices, pressure sensor. All hardwired and the sensor tied into the CTS monitor. I don’t think they had that when I did mine, or if they did. Don’t tell me!

When I did airbags, it was a complete positive game changer!  I had them on in an hour and immediately left with the 5th wheel in tow.  Absolutely worth the time and money.

Boy are they proud of that little keyed system $300 bucks for some plates.

I think I’ll be ordering the bags without the bumps in them.  See no major reason for them

Copy that, they're spendy

But you wouldn't think those things would make such a difference. You know how when you hit a bump and the load rocks the truck pitching it for a few seconds? These eliminate that. By engaging the primary and secondary spring packs you are already into the serious weight management that GM built into our trucks. Way better when carrying heavy.

I engage them then add maybe 50 lbs of air and as they say in New Yark, 'fa-get-ah-bowt-it"
