Build Threads / 2021 Ram 3500 Crewcab

Back in June of 2021, I drove my 2018 Tundra from Northern Kentucky to Green Bay Wisconsin to pick up a new Ram 3500.  Prior to that, I conducted some deep-dive research on towing capacities, GVWR, tongue weight, payload and other towing considerations.  Although the Tundra was an excellent truck it just wasn't an ideal vehicle for towing a loaded 25 foot toy hauler across the country and into the mountains.

Hey guys, its been a while.  I hope all of you are doing well.

I purchased a new Tundra Crewmax back in June of 2018. The first modification was to have the local Line-X vendor spray-in a bedliner.

Shops Garages and Barns / Kentucky Shop Build

I started my detached 30'x44' stick built garage fall of 2005. The objective was to get my project car, an FFR cobra replica out of the attached two car garage so we can fit the drivers in there. We had to take down about 20 large, old-growth Ash, Hickory, Walnut and Maple trees. Hated to do that but it all went to a good use. The green Hickory went to a well-known barbeque place up in Cincinnati, the Walnut was set aside for a future woodworking project and the Maple & Ash we are still burning in the fireplace.

So, what are you going to do for transportation when you run out of diesel or gasoline?

How far can you walk in a day?

How much can you carry on your back?

What kind of physical shape (conditioning) are you in?

My wife and I bought a mountain bike for my son (age 10) for his birthday in early July.  His enthusiasm upon receiving the bike and his relentless pleadings for me to go for a ride with him prompted me to take a walk out to the big garage and head up the stairs.

Back in the corner, behind several rolls of insulation and a stack of rough-cut Ash and Walnut boards, I found a dusty, flat-tired, old Giant ATX-760 leaning up against the wall in a corner.  The right-hand gearshift and brake levers were snapped clean off, casualty of a rough ride down a steep, heavily wooded hillside that ended in what was reported to be a spectacular wipe-out.  I didn't find out about the incident until several months after the driver of the bike, my oldest daughter's previous BF, left for the Marine Corps.  Typical USMC Knuckle-head… I would have enjoyed being there for the crash…

I pulled the bike out from the corner and brought it down into the basement of the house and placed it in a bicycle maintenance stand.  I took a bucket of warm, soapy water and a can of WD-40 and began cleaning years of dust, cobwebs and dirt from what was a pretty solid Mountain bike back in the mid-nineties.  I pulled out some bicycle tools I had not used in years, a crank puller, freewheel sockets and tire wedges.  After several hours of cleaning, disassembling, lubricating and re-assembly, I had a near functional bicycle and a list of parts that would be required to make Mr. Giant operational once again.  3 days later, a box of parts (Amazon) arrived...

Share Your Recipe / Venison Summer Sausage 2nd Batch...
« on: December 15, 2014, 02:29:45 PM »
The initial 15 pounds of summer sausage didn't last long at all.  It was very good.

This time, Dan and I decided to try 4 different recipes.  One five pound batch was a left-over store-bought recipe packet.  The rest were variations of Nate's Summer Sausage Recipe listed here:

http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=149.0

The other variations were:

1. Peppercorn
2. Cheddar
3. Jalapeño-Cheddar

These two guys helped supply the venison.  First deer for the guy on the left, a nice doe taken with a 30-30 at about 60 yards.  Second deer for the guy on the right, his first buck, taken with a bow at 17 yards.

Build Threads / 2012 Jeep Wrangler Lift kit install

My wife's 2012 Jeep JK Wrangler.  We bought it new and it is factory stock with the exception of a M.O.R.E. dead pedal.  No Rubicon or Sahara package, just the Sport model with the ugly steel wheels and the stock tires.  I was determined to wear out the tires before we put on a lift kit, new wheels and tires.

Sunday afternoon, I brought about 30-35 lbs of venison from last season over to  Dan's place.  The plan was to make about 15 lbs of venison Summer Sausage and turn the remainder into breakfast sausage.  I desperately need to make room in the freezer as all three of my kids want to harvest deer this year.  This is the first time either Dan or I attempted to make summer sausage.  Here is how it went:

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Craigslist Compressor Rebuild
« on: September 19, 2014, 06:25:12 PM »
I have an early '90's vintage Craftsman compressor. Its the loud, oil-less type.  It has served me well since my days at Fort Campbell.  With some major projects coming up that will require die-grinding, sand-blasting, painting and other high-air-demand tasks its time to upgrade and retire the Craftsman compressor to the woodworking shop.

Here we go.  For quite some time, I had been looking for a 70's - 80's, relatively rust-free, crew-cab truck.  Ford, Dodge or GM, it didn't really matter.  My objective was (and still is) to put a cummins diesel into it, either a 6BT or 4BT.  I avoided local trucks as they were anything but rust-free.  I searched CL in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado's western slope, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.  I even flew out to look at a few trucks.  I eventually found what I was looking for a little over 100 miles away, in Indiana.  These pictures I took when I drove to Indianapolis to look at it for the first time.  Here it is:
