Got a couple things working for the Burb now. Getting the Reg "fixed". (found a 3/4 ton diesel getting parted out with a clear title) but nothing settled yet.

Even though it is a 1/2 ton it is very clean and would be ashame to let it go. As for beefing up the frame it is more or less clear from the rear springs to the front shackles. So boxing all that is deff and option.

You know, that motor and tranny is just darn purdy, the white still needs to grow on me though.

Scored a 14 bolt FF with looks like 4.11s (matches the dana 60) for just $120 yesterday.

do you know what year that housing is? ^^ 84-85 are the bad years with the small pilot bearing.

Real bad or just not as good? Good info to know, now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I think it has a locker, but not sure. Both drums turn solid the same way where an open they normally go opposite. Looks OK inside, solid gears but a little rust as it was sitting. It will get discs.

220 is easy. If you have the panel nearby you are set.

My garage didn't have 220 either, I was running a cord from the dryer to the compressor. Now I have a separate panel in the garage.

This is my first Miller, have always been a Lincoln guy before. The machine works great vs what I posted above. I only paid $1100 out the door with a 60cf 75/25 tank.

In fact I just got this for as I always wanted to dabble in Alum some. Was just $110 shipped on the bay.

No, I have not used this machine on 110, but have welded alot with 110 before. This was on a Lincoln 125 and a 185. I didn't really like the 185, just never seemed as good as the 125 to me.

As for Tig, I have been looking at the Longevity 185i. It does Tig, Stick and a Plasma in both 110/220 and seems to get good reviews. I am finding that for around $800. Not US made but they are based out of the Bay area here (75 miles from me) so support should be no issue. I have a plasma (mastercut 42) and once you have plasma, you will always have plasma.

As long as the uninformed get the spotlight and others are afraid to say anything it will not change.

Even here in Kali I see the tide slowing and showing hope. I see more people really standing up for what is right. Problem is the Titanic is at full steam and we are having trouble getting to the bridge.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Miller 211 issue
« on: December 08, 2014, 01:40:22 AM »
Well, I thought it was an issue, but was more of a "I feel stupid" problem  ::)

Anyway got the Miller 211 Mig with dual voltage about 9 months ago. Worked great. Did a few repairs for friends and was comfy with it.

Was about to modify my 2 ton hoist so it would fold flatter and allow me to open a gate fully on the side of the house where I park the toy hauler.

Then I was welding up (or trying) a tire mount for a bud and it kept eating tips. Figured it was some sort of "contamination" in the feed, but just couldn't pin it down.

So after going through about 6 tips, checking I had gas, playing with feed and pressure I just plain gave up. Probably wasted a good 50ft of wire when the tips welded to the wire, man the nests were a B**$H!!!!!!!!!!!

Now after a couple weeks of cleaning the garage and now needing to the hoist out I am about to take the welder into the dealer and see how good the warranty really is. But first I do a little web searching and figure it is the gas causing the issues as in no flow. So as I am about to pull the plug on a new flow-meter I check it out one more time. Plenty of gas (1800psi), flow needle jumps when I squeeze the trigger but I hear nothing at the tip. So I open up the box (another nest not cleaned up) and check where the hose come into the machine.
Well low and behold I see an O ring in the open and know that something isn't right since they normally keep gas going somewhere. I loosen the thumbscrew up a little (it was snug) apply a little nose oil (dad taught me that) to the O rings and slid the assembly all the way in. Snugged up the thumbscrew and fired that puppy up. WOW, gas comes out the nozzle again.

Well now the mig is back up and I learned another lesson in checking the little things. I must have cleared a nest out of that thing 10 times and missed that. Checked the thumbscrew but just missed the hose being pushed out that 1/4 inch.

Been so busy haven't worked on this much. I did find a 14 bolt FF for the rear and it is 4.11 to match the front.

Can't unload right now as I am RR my hoist and will post that in the tool section. That was held up by my new Miller 211 acting up but that was simple fix.

I am leaning more towards the flop though right now, but nothing is solid.

What a Christmas present Don. Mom had both hers done. You spend 1-2 weeks in rehab, much less really getting back on your feet.

When this is done and you healed up, there has to be some civil unrest just to try it out for real. Not that I'm asking or advocating it, but should Don should not be denied.

I like the idea of shutting off the brake lights and a night version. Having no brakelights when someone is following you our chasing you is a great thing. Less reaction time before they hit your bumper.

As for 12v vs 24v, keep it 12v. Sure more amps to crank her over but more options for everything else as well as finding parts.

12v switch vs 24v means nothing, both will work. Just have to watch the draw, more volts=fewer amps and vise versa.

Heck, I was called a racist at work when I said I didn't like the new "Health Care Law" I never mentioned race, the man who occupies the white house (our house) and it wasn't even the person I was talking to.

Told the Sgt the same and I knew who accused me, told him to bad. Never heard another word.

I love those Paul Harvey speeches with the photo overlays...

The "So God made a farmer" one gives me wicked goosebumps

Couldn't agree more. Wasn't it first aired during the Superbowl?

I think I laid mine out even though it looked easy enough.

Nice on the plastic. I have a regular formed keyboard cover on my garage Laptop.

13365
That was a cut and paste from another site I used when talking about the 205 vs the 203 sometime back.

You just can't beat the 205, but most of you know that. Sure would like that behind my alli 1000 and have a stick to boot.

I book marked that puppy.

This looks pretty good for android at just $10 and I would probably have that in my pocket. I have a Kestrel too, even did a review on that about 10 years ago.

Happy Thanksgiving to all you boneheads too, it was a good one with inlaws to boot.

Brings back memories, my dad (gunny) was called a bull in a china shop all the time.

13370
Did a 205 when I was a younger lad. It was easy and everything was solid and I replaced all but the new billet housings you have. Mine was hanging on an Art Carr 700R4 with a custom shaft. I had a TCI before that and my little SBC blew it up!! Then I blew up the Art Carr too,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Anyway I built a rear mount for mine as you are referring too. It had 2 bosses on the side that worked great!!

13371
Yes. that looks great Don. Now it just needs the rest of the truck.

I really should get an AK. I have a kit but just haven't had the time to build it yet. I have mags and rounds already.

13373
I talked to Mike about these trannys since he is out here. He said he doesn't touch em, just the Allys.

Still good work and someone local. Wasted time, no. You learned and enjoyed it even without it just coming together.

Yep, nice job there. I heard it was not that hard, like changing spark plugs really.

Heck I replaced my cooler lines with alligators and not all that happy with them. Seemed like a lot of work for what it did and they still have restrictions smaller than the stock lines inside the fittings. I plan to go to dual coolers on both sides that will double the cooling area and using Summit fittings with larger hose.

I read something this very morning about Mitch coming out and stating if the pres tries to legalize without the legislative process, then he will not confirm any of OB's appointees for the next 2 years. And, Boehner would refuse to fund any of this through congress. We the people still have representatives in a congress, and we spoke loud and clearly two weeks ago.

Ted Cruz said the same thing last night. That's their 2 step plan to "checking" executive power. First, not confirming appointees. And second, appropriations.

But will they follow through??

I picked up someone who was Joe guest for some time. He called it cruel treatment. I asked how and sleeping in tents, 2 meals a day and pink undies came out of him.

I set him straight fast, was just a youngster and has much to learn. We were all there once, look at the paths we chose.

Tech/Electronics / Re: Video Cameras to get started. Wired and wireless
« on: November 22, 2014, 02:03:04 AM »
Of course you have the WIFI cameras too. I have one but be darned if I can get it to work and they have very limited range but the adjustability is big plus.

Another cool little item that comes in handy for security, Auto and plumbing/housework are wired snake camera via USB.

I just got one that works great, has a 15ft lead and its own led light. Under 3/8 dia so you can do about anything with it. Plus going right to your laptop (have to try it on my phone still) you have great viewing and record options. I am sure there are better ones, but for $20 how can you go wrong?

Tech/Electronics / Video Cameras to get started. Wired and wireless
« on: November 22, 2014, 01:27:50 AM »
Sure you have all seen the video systems from Walmart to Costco, so how so they really work?

I have this one from Harbor Frieght; http://www.harborfreight.com/color-security-system-with-night-vision-60565.html got it on sale for under $40. For what it is it works very good. It is wired so mounting somewhere is easy, plus it is 12v so it opens up lots of vehicle options.

I use a couple of the HF wired security cameras too, but they leave a lot to be desired. I have got some HD dome cameras off Ebay that work so much better for under $20.

I also have a few of these Wireless setups I got from Ebay and they works OK to for the price and being 2.4ghz. The little stand alone camera is nice as well as just adding a 9v battery. There are even recievers that plug right in via USB which opens up many options for viewing and recording. Software is a dime a dozen for this too.

13380
Looking good Don. Randy must be very happy with all the "business" you give him.

Like the military type lettering, just fits.

Idea for the tranny, why not go to a local shop when they rebuild a similar tranny and watch? You might see that "oh thats it" and find you issue.

13381
I am building a cover for this soon. Just happen to have a 2 story garage where I park it and just poured 3 DEEP fence-posts next to it just for that purpose.

13382
Well, just got off the phone with eclipse and there is no way to get the wall paper to match what I have torn off. In fact I was told the wall is a composite type structure so just fill and covering would not retain the original strength of the wall.

So the plan is to clean off what I can. Fill the voids with expanding foam and glue a new 1/8 panel over the exposed area with a covering to match. Of course this may just change to gluing on a panel alone, then painting to match the wall covering. I also know a guy who does vinyl sheets and may ask him if the pattern could be matched  from a picture.

I like the idea of aluminum for our purpose plus of just mounting a small camera.

Plus with the clamping used I think they would work better with compressed air.

I sure do like the height though!!

13385
Better be careful about how deeply you tear into this thing.
I am somewhat of an authority about little projects turning into major ones.
When you start with repacking the wheel bearings and then deciding on the need to stiffen and lift the suspension a bit, we'll all know the balance has shifted toward the 5 year "Oil change-plan!"

Funny thing is I do need to check the bearings and brakes. BUT HOW WOULD THAT EVER TURN INTO A BIGGER JOB?

13386
A little more glue and a few more screws and she is looking good.

Still need to fill the edges some as the new wood and the old OSB just don't see edge to edge well all the way around.

Thinking of using flexible body filler unless someone has a better idea. Could even mix sawdust with epoxy resin.

13387
OK, so with rain and coming and the inside drying I took to the roof again.

Fitted a new piece of ply to the opening, then added a 1/8 reinforcement joining the panels.

First I put new insulation in and glued the puppies in.

13388
Seems to be drying out very well and not finding anymore damage. I am actually quite happy with it.

Looks like up high I will have to reinforce some wood that is really mushy still, but I also maybe balsa wood by the touch and location. I am going to contact Eclipse and try to find out.

As for the finished repair I think I am going to fill the voids with foam, sand the surface smooth and fill it with, well I don't know yet. I am thinking FG which would tie it all together and give me a smooth surface to apply new wall paper. Other option would be to get a new 1/8 panel from eclipse and glue it on top.

13389
Yep, the link works fine. Wish I could help with the picture orientation.

I would love to get a set of that type rail for my El Camino, it has nothing in the bed at to tie things off.

How good do those straps work? Seen them around and they look stout.

13390
It looks pretty local. In fact some of the dark areas are glue and not damage which is why the paper is not coming off easy.

13391
Ooooh Nooooo!

I really think it could have been a lot worse, just wish I had done this sooner.

Heck you ought to see the prices here in Kali.

Been looking for a lab, wife says maybe a gold, I am leaning to the black or choc. I have to get a puppy so it can grow up with the cat. Think the wife will say its "her or the dog" must go. To bad it would be so expensive to loose her,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Always liked those Jeeps. It I needed a smaller ride than the sub, it would go that way. But I do like real frames!!

The dog does have nicer hair for sure,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

13395
I am going to have to remove the bed rail to do this right. I have it opened up pretty well right now and have a heater in there drying it out. I will let this go for a few days as I finish the roof off.

I am sure there will be more teardown just to make sure it is solid and dry.

13396
So now comes the tearoff. Wasn't all that bad really. The wood was delaminating itself than rotting. The water had dripped down between the steel frame and the insulating foam and ended up near the seat mounts. There was wood for mounting the seats too and only a small area was really bad and it was soft not rotten.

The wall looks to be 1/8 ply with the wall paper cover and that is glued to the frame and foam. Much of the black you see is glue for the wall paper as some still wants to stay put. I did find some fungus about eye level behind the bed rail. This is the right where the wet spot shows by the bed rail.

13397
OK, now for pics;

After unbolting the seat and bed rail I cut around the affected area.

Found a mushroom growing behind a seat bracket.

All the screws that came out felt solid. Sure they were a little corroded but they were still doing their job.

13398
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or tearing into the trailer wall!!

The Good, very little if any rot found. Its wet but there is a steel frame.

The Bad, I didn't get this earlier and now have more work to do.

The Ugly (besides me) is finding both fungus and more mushrooms growing inside the TH.

13399
Pulled out the braces and it looks good. I showed the before pic here to so it is easy to compare.

Then I found the other water damage, need to open this up quick!

13400
I got new hardware and added a couple screws from up top that holds the wood to the frame. I used stainless screws on the drip rail holding it all together.

For glue, the epoxy resin and a few layers of 5 oz cloth should do the trick just fine. I laid the first sheet in and up the wall, applied resin, placed the 2x2 in and added screws. Then I filled the truss and layered in more cloth both over and up all the edges to the trusses.

It all hardened up nice so I trimmed a little and covered it as the rain was coming. I want to get this buttoned up before we get real rain. Plus I want to open up the inside to see if there is any really bad news giving it a chance to dry out.
