Duramax captured in the wild...

Hauled a load of junk to the dump for my brother in law

Anyone else read this in Steve Irwin's Aussie accent?

"Oye, there's the elusive Duramax in the wild, doin' work."

Hahaha! reminds me of this one:

Here's a few pics of my toy:

Me, the wife, and a couple of our "kids" in DEC2012. And one showing the 6pt cage in the old girl.

just reread this and realized I didn't include the dually.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

If and when the hubs on the CJ kick the bucket, I'll be upgrading. The truck will get lock-outs before the Jeep needs new ones, but that'll have to wait a bit. I just had to replace the clutch/flywheel in the truck, so I'm going to have to wait a bit on that project.  ;)

Wow... tough crowd here... this will be like Michael Richards playing the Apollo theater, but here goes nothing:

My old Ford truck collection... 2000 F250, 1997 F150, 2001 F650, and hidden behind that is a 1998 Ranger stake body...

And here's my old 2000 Peterbilt 378 with a P4F Wildcat on a flat rack container, about to make it's way to Japan

All these trucks have gone on to new owners.

Current stable includes a 2006 E350 van, 2013 Flex, 2000 Grand Marquis, 2006 Z1000, and 2005 MR2 Spyder

We're primarily a Ford family... but Jesus told me in a dream to forgive people who drive GM products.

Fords are OK, although I am wondering about this twin turbo thing they have now.

Story here...

I am on the local fire department board, a voting member.

We own one of the new F450 ambulances with that 6.7. Just since November...and I challenge anyone to believe this, but it's all true.

Sometime around Thanksgiving the turbos failed. So we took it in and they bolted on a new set. The next board meeting, would have been in Jan, the chief is embarrassed to report that they repaired the turbos. The chief took it on a shakedown run and the turbos...both of them grenaded...again!

Unbelievable!

The mechanic, and for now on I am speaking in theoretical terms, as in if this actually happened, it would make a great story.

The mechanic said it is the pollution control stuff causing the turbos to run super hot and to fail so quickly. For a certain dollar amount, which board members need to authorize, that junk can be made to fall off, completely.
So that happens, and along comes the Feb board meeting.

The chief reports that the ambulance ran like a scalded dog, had never been stronger! So strong in fact that it shoved a connecting rod right out the side of the block...during a run...blowing oil all over the rear tires...which failed to maintain traction, being all covered in oil and antifreeze and all. All this on the interstate with a patient on board. In retrospect I sort of wish the thing would have exploded. The patient was a heroin overdose...I mean, why waste the money trying to save Bernie Sanders voters?

The chief asks us what to do? The quote for a new engine is 17K. We need the ambulance, since heroin od's are becoming more and more common, and I still want service for the occasional heart attack.

You're really not going to believe this, but there's more

17K and more time later, and we have a new Jasper engine installed. The guys go and get the cursed thing and while driving it back to the station...The engine blew up...again! Sent another rod through the block, and this time it also screwed up the transmission somehow.

I found this out that at the March board meeting. Jasper is covering part of it, and our insurance is covering the balance, but the bill this time is nearly 25K! Oh yea, those Heroin overdose runs? Ya, we usually don't get reimbursed anything for the effort.

Side note here. We respond to a call last summer. H-overdose. THe guy dies, but our boys revive him and get him to the hospital. They release him in the afternoon. That night, the same bonehead OD's a second time, this time with his wife. He dies again. Our boys revive him...second time THAT DAY. and get him to the hospital! Yea, we didn't get paid for that. Not even a hearty handshake or a toothy smile!

We are thinking of just getting the ambulance running and try to sell it. I suggested we pull the box off and stick it on a Dodge dually. Anything to get away from a Ford!

During all this the chief needed an new command vehicle. We absolutely forbid another Ford. We ordered a Tahoe with some police package. It will be here in May...

hard to believe. and sad to hear.

we have 2 at the shop, one an FX4 and the other a 4x4. both long box crew cabs loaded to the gills. one a '12 and one '14. both have been used to haul anything from 25 ton AC units to 200kW generators with 2 bins of #2 banded and 4/0. never had a problem with either. and they ride great for 7k+ lbs trucks. it's the closest thing from ford that ive driven that pulls as hard as the dodge 6.7s we have. the 07 3500 is on its last leg, but it's been ridden hard and put up wet. a lot. the other 5500s have had their issues, but none engine related. and none that weren't covered under warranty

I have wondered since the second set of turbos if the mechanics ever cleaned out the oil lines or system, or just let all those metal filings do their destructive work...??

no telling. but id start there. probably too late to do oil analysis also..

we run amsoil full synthetic in everything. and change it 8-10k miles on trucks. 500 hrs on filters and 1000 hrs on oil for generators. which translates to roughly 25k miles and 50k miles.. and haven't had one go bad yet. good thought about the old turbo grenade haunting the oiling system. especially with THAT quick of a failure(s)

I charged $1000 per mile to move this plane, all 10 miles from Long Beach Airport down to the Port of Los Angeles.
38' 6" wide, required 5 LEO escorts and 2 civilian pilot cars.

Where do I pick up my "Coolest Kid on the Playground" badge? ( I think Don actually has that badge... what with all the helicoptering, but I have spent a lot of time using a Bell Jet Ranger as a taxi around Southern California acting like a big shot... lol)

Wow, I just read the story about the ambulance... Sounds like you just got a lemon on that deal.

Never, not ever, have I had a catastrophic failure of any kind on any Ford I've ever owned, and that includes 10 different F-series medium duty trucks including F-550, F-650 and F-750 (Cat C7 motors in those).  Not to mention my E-350 (5.4L V-8) and my F-250 (7.3L Powerstroke), and the 2000 Grand Marquis (4.6L V-8).

Sure, you have your chinese water pumps and other various accessories that wear out... but rods shooting through the block?  Turbo failures at low miles?  Unheard of in my world.  Sorry about your luck.

All my trucks are high mileage, the van currently has well over 300k on the clock...

I like that Mustang, make mine a "D" model please!

Like a F-86 as well
The F-4 Phantom is hard to beat and the F-15 has never been defeated in aerial combat

I guess I like all those because all of them have killed the lions share of shot down Migs in the world

And I don't like Migs...Don't know why...

But all that pales compared to the beauty of the Chinook...

Sorry, drifting a bit here...

My favorite of all WW2 aircraft is the P-61D Black widow. Faster than a Mustang, has a quad .50 top turret, 4 dorsal mounted 20mm cannon (these with the .50s be slaved forward equaling enough firepower in a quick burst to down anything), and the first U.S. nightfighter designed for that role from the ground up. The Mustang is gorgeous, though, as is the Sabre. I like the Tomcat over the Eagle, though (AIM-54, 'nuff said).  ;)

Ah, reminds me of a funny story

I am a young Warrant Officer flying the worthless Jet Rangers out of Kizengen, Germany back in the 80's

The bank manager there is an old German gentleman

We chat from time to time, and one day he says he found something in the hills walking the past weekend. Germans walk all the time... Well I investigate and it turns out to be a WW2 P-51 drop tank!

He thought it was a bomb and he knew I was a pilot (Flight suit...every third word I said at the time pointed back to my being a pilot...) (Apologies to the world, for the don that was...)

That breaks the ice and he tells me he was an officer in the Wehmacht in the big one! He went to school at the little US Army post opposite side of the town up on the hill...The place back then we stored things made of Uranium...Ya know, glow in the dark wrist watch repair parts.

He tells me back in the day it was the German Army's ADA (Air Defense Artillery) School. As in the guys with the 88mm cannons shooting at our 8th Army Air Force Guys.

After a long moment, I pull a photo of my dad out of my wallet. I tell him, my father flew B-17G's and bombed Germany in 44-45. I told of him of a few places he bombed and approximate dates. He smiles, and said, well, I guess I didn't accomplish my mission that day or I wouldn't be talking to you today.

This man actually commanded the battalion of 88mm anti-aircraft guns tasked with protecting Kitzengen and north toward Schweinfurt, both places Dad dropped bombs on late in the war.

He says he didn't mind the B-17, although it was crushing his country, but he had a real personal problem with the P-61!

He told me this story that was mixed with some smiles and some pretty serious stares. He was in Northern Italy, I think he said as a Captain. His people were billeted in a single building, which included his room as well. His guys liked to smoke. Lighting of cigarettes would make a momentary flash. Well one night when he was on duty one of his men, well, he estimates several of them were smoking and joking when a P61 orbiting above in the night sky set up on them and lays in some .50 fire and a single bomb. The bomb hit perfectly. He said he lost most of his men who weren't out manning the guns and his boots. He had a custom pair hand made in Italy for him by a local craftsman. He wore his worn out set on duty, but kept the nice ones for special occasions.

THose boots were demolished along with his clothes, pics of his family, and about everything else he owned along with a good percentage of his men. He said from that night on, the Americans never stopped attacking and he ran all the way back to Germany with his rag tag unit, in worn out boots. He still had those crappy boots on when he shot at my dad!

What a story...What a small world. Oddly, but I felt a strong kinship for that old man. And when I told dad, he told me to shake his hand for him...And to say they were just two guys doing their jobs. Dad said that he was glad he missed as well, and wished the gentleman a long healthy life.

Don,

That's a great story. It just goes to show that the western Soldiers, even when they were enemies, are not that different. Camaraderie can cross those boundaries.

Bobby, here's a fact about the F-105 (Thud)

It is the only Air Force Fighter to ever be retired due to combat losses.

Yup, mostly Vietnamese ground fore shot down so many of them, that the units could no longer be filled with aircraft...or pilots!

F-111 is also a favorite of mine.

So it the Phantom, but you mentioned it already.

Remember getting buzzed by a 111 just outside of Beale fishing in Black Butte. They are big and fast.

Call me crazy, but I'm a Warthog fan. They scare the crap at of me, and I don't even wear a towel on my head!

The Thunderbolt II, aka Warthog, is the ground pounder's savior! The only USAF aircraft I want on call in a bind, especially against an armored foe. Of course, the USAF never really wanting to perform CAS and really hating how well the A-10 performs in that role, hates it! They have been trying to get rid of it since the late '80s (just before DS/DS they were actually going to give it to the Army). The Spectre is awesome for dealing with our less technological enemies.
