What are the items in your medical kit?
« on: December 03, 2014, 09:54:28 PM »
I have a few kits that I stash and carry.  I'm not really happy with any of them completely.  What are the items you must have in your med kit?  From memory this is what is in mine.

Various self adhesive bandages
gauze pads in various sizes
tape
trauma pads/pressure pads
quick clot
tampons
eye wash
analgesic spray/tablets
antihistamine
immodium
providone iodine packets
alcohol packets
swabs
gloves
scissors
tweezers
hemostats
Ace bandages
cold packs
heat packs
quick tourniquet

What I'd like to have that I don't

suture kit
scalpel
lidocane and syringes
Epi pen
super glue/surgical glue

What am I missing?  What do you have/wish you had in your kit?
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Unusual stuff, but from what I've seen

Ashermans chest seals 3-4
Heavy gage needle
Abdominal bandage
Israeli battle dressings 2-3
Cotton bandages with quik-clot or other anti coagulant
Steri-strips
Blood pressure cuff
Throat air passage device. I like the curved plastic ones, however the tube ones that slide in your nose
Bag or two of ringers for dehydration or even severe blood loss if you have nothing else
Benadryl tabs
Aspirin
Tylenol
Vaseline
Neosporin
Sling for broken arm support
Splint (2 lengths of fiberglass or aluminum for weight management)
Masking tape
Cloth tape couple baggies
space blanket
Colloidal silver
Med scissors
Tourniquet
Lipstick or something for marking ("T" on forehead for example)
small bottle of sterilized water (Flushing eyes or wounds)
Bandages go fast so pack accordingly
Insect spray
Thermometer
Eye patch
Head bandage
latex gloves

Note: some of these things might already be in Red Neck's want list, I didn't scrutinize. I just added a bunch of favorites of mine as they rolled out of my head...

If you're going to get a BP cuff, you might as well get a stethoscope. Also the pulse/ox machines come in handy when I do medical calls with the Fire Dept.

Also, as odd as it sounds, we've found it handy to have blood sugar strips and tester; the reason being that if you can treat somebody with some orange juice, or a PB sandwich, it's much better than assuming he's just an unruly drunk. I've seen so many people appear "drunk" when all it really was was low sugars. Of course if sugars are too high, the fix is a little harder since not everyone has a syringe of insulin in their pocket.

A pen light is also handy, both for being able to see what you're doing and testing to see if someones pupils are equal and reactive.

A pocket mask with a 1-way valve to be used when doing CPR is a plus, especially if you need to treat a stranger or anyone that may have a contagious disease or infection (ie. HIV, Hep. etc) or just to keep their vomit outta your mouth. Lots of times people get a little too enthusiastic when doing rescue breathing, which ultimately causes the patients stomach to fill with air and then send the stomach contents out their mouth.

Water-Jel blankets are also awesome if you have to treat someone with burns.

And if you have a really good sized bag, throw in an AED for good measure ;)

Love the lists you guys came up with so far, will be adding a few things to my own bag!

I think we discussed it before, but where does one get anti-biotics other than through a Doctor friend?

Veterinarians, feed stores, online. I've heard some of the easiest to get a hold of are the ones for fish

Get your get to set you up with stuff for repairing a torn up dog- stapler and amoxicillin 250mg 'cause Red Dog keeps running through fence while down at farm and you don't want to run back north to fix her up!

I actually used up 300 in 3 years on dogs being tore open!

Well I was going to be in Laredo this week and mistakenly thought I would be able to pop across the border and get some antibiotics for the stash.  Oh no, not any more.  Apparently a passport is required.  They document the hell out of me going and coming but any other mexican and OTM can just wade across the river and receive benefits and health care.

We are going down the tube

Also researching this.  Seems to be a way to get a lot of antibiotics
