Small buildings and sheds for shelter
« on: May 13, 2015, 05:38:30 PM »
Today I investigated some Amish built sheds, cabins, and buildings. I am evaluating all my options before executing on what sort of structure I really need for the hide site, bug-out location

Speaking with a very polite and kind Mr. Yoder we explored the possibilities. He builds units in widths of 12', 14', and 16 feet. Lengths start at a modest 10 feet and increase in 2-4 foot increments up to his largest building, a 16' X 40' structure that could easily be sectioned off and made into a functional small house of 640 square feet.

Here are some examples

This one is 16 X 32

Some are sectioned off into rooms such as a bedroom, bath, closet and other rooms. Some have lofts, some have vaulted interior spaces, some are insulated, have electrical components already installed and are available in any state of finish you might desire

Nice looking cabins- nice enough to live in for quite awhile for a small family and easy to heat with a small wood stove.

Many shapes and sizes are available as well as materials.

You can have your building made of steel, wood or wood frame sheeted in "Smart panels" which are some sort of hybrid composite panel a bit more advanced and much better looking than OSB

Exactly Mike

For my plan I want to introduce a modest size shed like one of these and electrify it. After wiring in a 35 amp circuit, I can hook up the camper for more space and temporary housing. The original building would become storage and a workshop from which I could safely house tools, food, a washer and dryer and other things which I would use to continue to build in the area.

Later I could use this and some other buildings I plan to house folks if I decided to go with a communal living setting of like minded people working together for everyone's survival and well being

He also had some really cool furniture pieces I will definitely be collecting.

The chairs are gliders, and the double bench thing is assembled on a platform which rocks back and forth.

I would recommend a large door to facilitate use for storage. They look great. I am thinking along the same lines.

For the shed building I plan for a double barn door 6 feet wide and a standard service door

Those all look great. It also appears you would be able to spec out what you want and need as far as fit and finish.
But there is your road access, which may prove difficult by the sounds of your past few weeks. That is a lot of size and probably a fair bit of weight too. There would have to be some considerable roadway improvements I think.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

Brother you just hit the nail on the head

And in my case not so much widening the road or improving it, but getting permission to do so.

I have to drive through someone elses property to get to mine. I am guaranteed access by KY statutes, but when I asked him if I could improve the road he said go 10 feet wide and straight up...no more!

There is a spot in the road where the thing is about 3-4 feet below grade and barely 7 feet wide. It will take a dozer or big red to widen that area.

Making my choices difficult. Had it not been for that, I would already have been building there

Don, sounds like an opportunity for a barn raising party.  Load of lumber and some like minded people and we could build that thing in a day.  Gas powered air compressor and a generator for the circular saw and we are good to go.

You lay the footings in concrete and design it so that the roof would accept full panels of metal roofing and it would be a piece of cake.
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Kathy was suggesting the same thing today...have a labor day down there
I need more infrastructure there before I could even attempt that

Negative, sir.  We travel equipped.  Tent, bbq pit, MREs you name it.  We come prepared and hungry for fellowship.  I'll bring that prissy pretty dually of mine with a trailer full of tools and stuff.

I like it all. But instead of bringing as whole, can he do modular?

The walls and trusses look standard. Load em up on you trailer and haul em in.

I was thinking the same, take it all in pieces and put it together. They make tons of log cabin kits like that, put it together to make sure it fits then ship it to the build site and assemble.

10" sliding miter chop saw w/ folding stand, generator, circ. saw, hand tools, camper & tent, unmolested Stihl chainsaw, pop-up canopy.......yard fogger.......I'm sure between the DOT's etc. we'd have more tools than hands to use them!

Set the schedule and the Corps de DOT shall abide for the Big Don-bowski!  ;)

Hey, I survived that just fine!

Kath says it knocked some sense into me!

This is actually sounding exciting. Probably a pipe dream, but would be fun getting together with everyone for sure!

We'll let the Lord develop the plan. I am not completely sure what he wants to do with my place, but I've given it to him, so he has to tell me.

I know this, every time I go out looking at structures for us, Kathy starts looking at smaller cabins. She says we stuff them in nooks and crannies everywhere for the people who will be coming to learn the Real-Man thing.

Is that the vision of this place?

The weather is rainy now, so we are restricted to inside activities. Tractor and wet ground = bad ju-ju
Boys in rain = nothing getting done, dog lost, guns rusty, tools misplaced

Out of curiosity. Where is that builder located? I've been in the market for a well built shed for quite some time now.
