Impressive!

I used to load a 140 gr Barnes into m .264 Win Mag. was the most consistent load and my Remy 700 BDL with a German scope just loved it. I never hit anything but paper with mine, as I shot it for years in Europe on ranges. When I returned to hunting in the States mostly in Kentucky, it was back to my Marlin 336 lever gun (.35 Remy) where 50 meters was your average shot. I did drop a 6-pt once at a bit over 100 meters with it, but secretly always wanted to make a 500+ yard kill with my .300 WM.

MIL?? Was your wife on the hunt as well? Was that her pic? That's pretty cool.
The .264 Win Mag is an awesome caliber. I have a pre cross bolt safety 336 in my safe that’s chambered in .35Rem. It has one of the discontinued Bushnell Elite 2-7x32 scopes on it and it is a fantastic combination.

The hunt was just myself, my father in law, and my mother in law. My wife stayed here in Alabama to take care of the kids and her 99 year old grandmother. I would not have taken such a long leave of absence from her and the kids but she insisted I take her dad out there. It started out just he and I but he felt bad about going out there without his wife. That being said, it’s not unusual for her and I to go hunting together. I do a lot of hunting during the week because of my work schedule and she’s retired so sometimes I’ll just swing by her house and pick her up on the way to the property.

Nice work long ball! Good to see some meat harvested!
Thank you sir. I haven’t forgotten that antelope hunt we discussed 5 years ago and I am still appreciative of the information you gave me. With the kids at age 2 and 5 I figure we’re 3-4 years away from the littlest being able to tag along. As soon as we feel he could make a stalk without talking or howling at the moon (he’s a wild one and 100% boy) we’ll try to make that happen.

This was the first guided hunt I’d been on and it was great. From listening to people talk around the camp/lodge/whatever, their experiences varied wildly depending on which guide they had. Suppose we got lucky with the guy we drew.

Hope y’all have been well the last year and I wish you a very merry early Christmas.

Just got back from a cow elk hunt with my in laws on The Great Western Ranch in New Mexico. My mother in law and I both took a cow and combined we came home with almost 300lbs of meat. I shot mine at 317yds and hers was 230yds. If it weren’t for failing to adjust atmospheric date we would’ve brought home a third. Live and learn I guess. For those interested I loaded 130gr Barnes TTSXs over 54gr of H4350 in Rem cases with Win LR primers. Last 3 shot group I shot with that combination was .343”. Those bullets need 1,800 fps to expand with 2,000fps and above preferable. That relatively mild load stayed above 2,000fps to 400yds. At 317 the bullet broke a rib at the entrance, traveled through both lungs and took half of a rib out on the opposite side before exiting. Can’t complain about those Barnes bullets.

Here to make my yearly post before I disappear again. Since simple seems to be the theme here I’d like to throw out one more option I haven’t seen yet.

https://www.gmperformancemotor.com/parts/19370163.html

Factory 6.0, 450hp long block $4636.
With the gearing you’ve got that gets you better than factory performance. It may not be as much power or as good of mileage as you desire but as far as simple goes, this seems to be the winner.

If a supercharged 6.0 won't make him happy, I doubt that will longball.

My recommendation would be to drive it as is, while it still runs. A 12V might give you power and mileage, but long distance trip comfort? (will it even fit around an independent front end without major work?) Not going to be happy imo.

But alas, Big D still has a nice truck that's capable of towing a nice trailer... I heard there's one rotting away on a farm somewhere.

Do I get a severance package?
I thought it still wasn’t running properly and nobody could figure it out. If it’s running the way it should, just not enough, I retract my previous suggestion. See y’all in 2022 and Merry Christmas!

I completely understand that. For no good reason I started lusting after a Ruger No. 1 in 25-06 several years ago. My father-in-law located one at a store near him so I went to get it. I left with a bolt action 22 for my wife and to this day don’t have that No. 1

Since we have feral hogs on one of the places I deer hunt a BAR made a lot of sense. With a 1.5-5 Leupold it was more than adequate for the range I can see to shoot (SE timber country) but would allow me quicker 2nd or 3rd shots at moving hogs without having to relinquish my grip on the rifle. The first time I shot a hog I might have gotten a second one with a semi auto. I can’t run a bolt as fast as Tex.

The only con it had in my case, albeit a small one, was its weight. They’re a little heavier than a bolt gun but I wasn’t humping it for miles so that didn’t really matter.

As far as semi-auto hunting rifles go I think it’s your best bet. I had an older safari grade IV that I really liked. It shot good and recoil was very manageable. If you prefer the older steel/wood guns you should be able to find a used safari for the same money or less.

Good afternoon gents. Since going through the front end of this truck back in March I’ve replaced the pump once due to a noise I thought was a sign of it going bad. When I turn the noise is similar to the sound of the cooling fan when you first start up and take off, but louder. I also cannot turn the wheel while stopped and if getting on the brakes hard there is feedback in the pedal. The symptoms didn’t go away with the new pump and yesterday, while my wife was driving it she got a service brake system message. So all of the hard steering parts are new, the power steering pump is new, all of the lines are new, and the hydro is just over a year old. While looking at a buddy’s truck yesterday I noticed that his line from the pump to the hydro does not have the sharp bend in it that mine does. That got me to thinking that maybe I got the wrong line, and that extra restriction is causing these issues. If any of y’all are still driving an LB7/LLY/LBZ would you mind posting a picture of this line please?

I need to replace upper control arms soon so I may do a little something different then.
Measuring from hub to fender the truck has less than 1/2” of rake but the cv shafts are still flat. When I put the aftermarket (Kryptonite) control arms on I may add a little preload to the torsion bars and a very small block on the rear. When I say a little I mean 1” at the absolute maximum.

I will have to do the fender mod. They don’t rub much but I’ll beat on the fender to keep from turning the torsion bars. A 34” tire under factory height suspension should work fairly well for something we take on family trips and I drive every day.

Nice size tires. To bad you aren't closer, I just got a mounting and balance machine.

You MAY have to do the fender mod with those tires, real easy on youtube (even Don could do it).

Did you get a lift pump?
If I was closer I’d definitely let you have a go at it. I have zero faith in most of our local tire shops.

I’ve been told there’s a parking brake cable behind the fender liner that will give an extra couple inches by moving it back some. If that’s not enough I’ll mod the fender.

I haven’t gotten a lift pump yet but I will. If I don’t stop writing checks for a while I’ll have to defend myself.

I never thanked you for the explanation JR, so, thank you. For the first time in weeks I got my parking spot at home back so I’ll check the oil again in the morning. As of last week, it didn’t appear to be making oil, so I’m hoping this issue is behind me.

On to the steering parts now. Moog HD pitman arm and Rare Parts tie rods showed up yesterday. This morning, in spite of the Napa employees’ best efforts, I bought a new power steering pump and all associated lines. Idler arm and brace should be here Thursday. Once all that goes on I have a set of 285/75/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires in the garage put on and hopefully be done spending money on this thing for a while. The 285/75/17 are 33.9” tall. Relocating the parking brake cable in conjunction with the Ranch Hand bumper should allow enough room for them to fit.

Everybody likes pictures right?

It won't get to a smooth voltage output till you get a few minutes of RPM on the alt. That might be part of the idle surge.
Can you say that again but as if you’re talking to a 8 year old child? I don’t know much about anything, but I know even less about electricity.

You might look at the voltage meter.  My alternator was fluctuating between 14-16 volts and that was causing some surging in sync with the voltage surge but I noticed it mostly at idle.  Replaced the alternator and surge was gone.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
The voltage on the dash holds steady. Out of curiosity I unplugged the alternator and started it. The surge seemed to lessen with it unplugged. I’ll have it tested and check the idlers and tensioner.

Do you have a lift pump? That could be the surge.

Unless it make lots of oil, is it worth the trouble? At least the shop is standing behind the work and the LB7 injectors are way easier to work on.
No lift pump. I don’t think any amount of fuel in the oil would be good and since he offered the labor I’ll try to get it fixed. That, and the surging is one of those things that will drive me bat Schiff crazy.

I had a shop tear into the truck and reseal all of the lines. I’ve put maybe 1,500 miles on it since. I can’t be sure but the oil level does seem to be creeping up slightly. I’ll keep an eye on it and see what happens. It also still has a slight surge at idle and when on a long, steady grade, I can feel it surge a little. After the shop worked on it it did stop smoking at startup, and starts quickly (as it always has). The shop owner did say that if they have to tear into it again he’ll do the labor for free, which I feel is pretty good of him.

I’m sure. When I pulled the plug it was under pressure. Made a hug mess in the floor. I drained my 16qt catch pan before I started and and it was full after i drained everything out of the truck. Poured the contents of the catch pan in a 5 gallon bucket and it filled it to roughly 5” from the top.

Is there a way for a shop to diagnose which side of the motor it’s on or do they just have a 50/50 chance of guessing correctly?

After doing som reading I believe Tex is correct and there is an injector body cracked. It makes sense that a problem like that wouldn’t show up on balance rates. I’m wondering if it will show on return rates?

Back in the summer I bought a 2004 LB7 from a coworker. 192k miles now and had new injectors fall of 2018 at roughly 185k miles (reputable, local, diesel shop). When I bought it there was a barely noticeable surge at idle. Fast forward to the morning following the first sub freezing night of the year and I had some white smoke on startup that lasted until I took off. No smoke after its warm or at stoplights like my other LB7 when the injectors went out. Throughout that first cold snap the surge got worse and it started surging while coasting to a stop. I ran a dose of HotShot secret though it with my usual XDP additive then changed the fuel filter and the symptoms went away. Today when changing oil I drained more than 2.5 gallons out of it. I having trouble understanding how it made enough oil to be obvious when draining it but I haven't had any white smoke for over a week now. Does it sound to y'all like a fpr problem or are the new injectors taking a dump? Trying to prepare myself before I have a chance to get the balance rates checked.

As of fall 2017 signature from sheriff was not required for trusts. No idea what has changed between then and now. I believe the listing of trustees was the biggest change made in 2015. Now every trustee has to submit photo and fingerprint cards. The ability to list a trustee as beneficiary in the event of death also allows the trustee to retain the item in their possession while they go through the necessary paperwork and review period instead of turning over listed items to the atf during the wait.

*disclaimer* all of this info is based on memory from three years ago so read with appropriate amount of salt.

I just finished pressure washing the radiator and intercooler the first time and they’re soaking again. I am amazed at how much crud came out. Since the antifreeze is of an unknown age is there anything wrong with me running distilled water in it for a few days, to make sure it circulates through the entire system, then draining and filling with the proper mixture?

So far today I’ve neglected to latch the coupler on my trailer before trying loading my side by side, which resulted in a large dent and missing pain from a truck I’m trying to sell. Then around lunch time I ran over my browning a-bolt hunter and Leupold vx-2 that’s mounted on it. Thankfully the rifle and scope appear to be fine, although showing significantly more character than yesterday. The ford tailgate didn’t fair so well.

That 05 would be one of the trucks subject to the transfer case pump rub. Check the back half of the transfer case for a small hole or signs of fluid weeping out. Best I remember the top half of the case is where the rubbing occurred. If it doesn’t have a hole plan on a case rub kit like this one.
