Doing research I find that DieselPower Mag did a Doomsday Suburban build in 7 parts. I am reading it now getting ideas.

Photo shop maybe, but I have seen it for real.

I got so tired of hearing "my babies daddy" like its not even an issue anymore. Then they get into a new lexus.

Or that woman in Georgia who yelled "who's going to be responsible"  when baby's daddy was hauled away for steeling.

Wow, its been years since I touched one of those, my elky has one.

Speaking of the elky, the darn thing stopped and won't start. Pretty sure its the ignition module.

Me too, I would never pay that for a sub, even with a cummins.

Looks like I might get the first one then just do a cab swap so I get the barn doors and a great interior.

I'm waiting for more pictures, it will have a corp 10 bolt front and a SF 14 bolt in back. Both will come out for a dana 60 and 14b FF and of course the 6bt

No engine or tranny and the tires/wheels in the picture are not on it.

I don't like;

Back fees due of around $200 (plus Ca tax and a 400 mile drive)

Red Interior

Tailgate

I do like;

California truck=no rust!!!

I prefer the GMC grill to the Chevy

3/4 ton=heavier frame,

Pre 96 diesel, no smog ever but still a legal swap here in KALI.

Will have PS brake booster already.

With all this it could be an good frame swap. I mean its a few plugs and what, 6 bolts for the body? I would want the front end off for the swap anyway. Sure wish I had a BIG GARAGE!!!

I would get my clean barn door body with nice interior, keep the GMC grill and it would be perfect!

I got a line going on the first one. Looks like a clean cali truck with a clear DIESEL title, 3/4 ton. Only bad is it has a tailgate and a red interior. He is already dropped it some but this maybe good for a body swap.

Thoughts??

13308
I like the idea of the center (east-west) disconnect. No ends hanging loose to catch or line up.

How about just a piece of square tube doing the same thing? Same concept as you have with the bolts.

Use a spring to push 1 side onto the other for normal driving. For a disconnect just us a cable and pull back the sleeve hooking it back onto,,,,,,well thats easy!

Powerplant, Driveline, and Braking / Re: GM 14 bolt build for the Sub.
« on: December 12, 2014, 10:40:27 AM »
Yep figured it was a post 85 (bigger pinion bearing) from the ribs, but prior to 90 from the mounts. After 90 (new body style) the mounts are closer the backing plate and ther is another bottom out plate welded inboard of that. (cut that off the 9.5 I have)

13311
You cover the whole roof with that stuff annually?

No, there is a protectant that helps with the UV that you put every year. About $25 a gal and lasts a few years.

The coating is when the roof gets old or you have other issues. It runs $60 and up a gallon and takes a day of prep and sometimes a few days to cure.

Hey, what are DOTs doing in here.

Anyway alone with the 14b I also have a Dana 60 from the 6BT truck that will probably find its way into this.

Starting on the 14b soon, the thread is here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=593.0

13313
Its a 2005 trailer. I've had it for about 4 years now. The right side was faded when I got it which is the same side as the leak. I can't complain about the life of the roof, I have heard 8-10 years and mine is parked outside and we have seen cooking sun for months the last few years.

I think 2 -3 years is when I would really start paying attention but us the UV protector every year.

13314
What coating is that?

I didn't get a chance to finish my repair and it is taped over and tarped waitng for the rain to stop.

Shawn, just the man I wanted to show up here. New there was someone here with what I needed.

Not that RuffStuff doesn't have good stuff and Don promotes them, but with lets support this place!

OK, do I need other hubs or is that up to me for width and can I get rotor that slide on?

13316
Yep, got us DOTs again.

I need to run up to Ruffstuff, they are just 45 minutes away. Just have to remember lots of $$$ as they have a lot for the 14b.

My dmax has the same but I really haven't done to much research on the conversion yet. Lots of them out there though. Sure its just a matter of the right hubs and rotors, thats why I am asking. Plus you loose more than 50 lb in the conversion.

13318
Ok, so hopefully you've seen my build started here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=81.0

Well the stock 8.5 will never cut it for what I have planned much less the small-block blew her up so she is getting a 14 bolt full floater. Picked one up from CL for just $120 that has the 4.10's matching the Dana 60 I have for the front.

For the 14 bolt I want to go with a locker and disc brakes. Has anyone done he disc swap here? I build my own for an 14 bolt sf sometime back and they worked great.

Looks like I have the wide SRW (single rear wheel ) hubs and the width is 67 in. For discs I really want to have slide on rotors vs held on with studs from the rear. Not sure if someone here can help me with that but some of the kits look to work that way, some do not.

I also like this skid plate for the yoke up front as the 14b tends to be on the LARGE side. It just bolts onto the pinion carrier.

13319
Or, leave the 52's so you have or upgrade them all. Keeping the same length keeps spare parts handy and leave springs do break!

Maybe a lot of those 20 year olds who have some common sense join the Military to get away from the air heads?????????

And as for the Military, aren't you supposed to Kill people and break things? I have no problem with that, few real people do.

You know Don when you talk about feeding people I always think of how my dad told me after mess in VN they always fed the locals next.

I think Don got it and put the motor in his garage.

The rear is 4.10 but think it is an open diff. Now to find truck hubs for less than I paid for the whole rear.

Build Threads / Re: 1991 Suburban Build, maybe flip or 6BT?

Have been doing the research and will do cross-over streering at least, maybe a booster too.

Unloading the 14b now, think it is a van rear 67 incher so will probably need truck hubs.

If a nice burb does not come up I have a frame with vin available from a 85 diesel. Would be able to do the frame work easy but have done it body on before too. Not sure if the frame thickness of .015 is worth the trouble of a swap.

Can't tell you guys how many times I have dealt with that face to face. Tree huggers are so far out there, but mostly harmless.

Then you get the idiot like you talked to. No first hand experience, kinda like the people talking slavery right now or hate a certain talk show host. They are so sure they are correct (won't use right) and it all is based on what they have heard from other ill informed sheeple (real word)

Got a couple things working for the Burb now. Getting the Reg "fixed". (found a 3/4 ton diesel getting parted out with a clear title) but nothing settled yet.

Even though it is a 1/2 ton it is very clean and would be ashame to let it go. As for beefing up the frame it is more or less clear from the rear springs to the front shackles. So boxing all that is deff and option.

13328
You know, that motor and tranny is just darn purdy, the white still needs to grow on me though.

Scored a 14 bolt FF with looks like 4.11s (matches the dana 60) for just $120 yesterday.

do you know what year that housing is? ^^ 84-85 are the bad years with the small pilot bearing.

Real bad or just not as good? Good info to know, now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I think it has a locker, but not sure. Both drums turn solid the same way where an open they normally go opposite. Looks OK inside, solid gears but a little rust as it was sitting. It will get discs.

220 is easy. If you have the panel nearby you are set.

My garage didn't have 220 either, I was running a cord from the dryer to the compressor. Now I have a separate panel in the garage.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Re: Miller 211 issue

This is my first Miller, have always been a Lincoln guy before. The machine works great vs what I posted above. I only paid $1100 out the door with a 60cf 75/25 tank.

In fact I just got this for as I always wanted to dabble in Alum some. Was just $110 shipped on the bay.

No, I have not used this machine on 110, but have welded alot with 110 before. This was on a Lincoln 125 and a 185. I didn't really like the 185, just never seemed as good as the 125 to me.

As for Tig, I have been looking at the Longevity 185i. It does Tig, Stick and a Plasma in both 110/220 and seems to get good reviews. I am finding that for around $800. Not US made but they are based out of the Bay area here (75 miles from me) so support should be no issue. I have a plasma (mastercut 42) and once you have plasma, you will always have plasma.

As long as the uninformed get the spotlight and others are afraid to say anything it will not change.

Even here in Kali I see the tide slowing and showing hope. I see more people really standing up for what is right. Problem is the Titanic is at full steam and we are having trouble getting to the bridge.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Miller 211 issue
« on: December 08, 2014, 01:40:22 AM »
Well, I thought it was an issue, but was more of a "I feel stupid" problem  ::)

Anyway got the Miller 211 Mig with dual voltage about 9 months ago. Worked great. Did a few repairs for friends and was comfy with it.

Was about to modify my 2 ton hoist so it would fold flatter and allow me to open a gate fully on the side of the house where I park the toy hauler.

Then I was welding up (or trying) a tire mount for a bud and it kept eating tips. Figured it was some sort of "contamination" in the feed, but just couldn't pin it down.

So after going through about 6 tips, checking I had gas, playing with feed and pressure I just plain gave up. Probably wasted a good 50ft of wire when the tips welded to the wire, man the nests were a B**$H!!!!!!!!!!!

Now after a couple weeks of cleaning the garage and now needing to the hoist out I am about to take the welder into the dealer and see how good the warranty really is. But first I do a little web searching and figure it is the gas causing the issues as in no flow. So as I am about to pull the plug on a new flow-meter I check it out one more time. Plenty of gas (1800psi), flow needle jumps when I squeeze the trigger but I hear nothing at the tip. So I open up the box (another nest not cleaned up) and check where the hose come into the machine.
Well low and behold I see an O ring in the open and know that something isn't right since they normally keep gas going somewhere. I loosen the thumbscrew up a little (it was snug) apply a little nose oil (dad taught me that) to the O rings and slid the assembly all the way in. Snugged up the thumbscrew and fired that puppy up. WOW, gas comes out the nozzle again.

Well now the mig is back up and I learned another lesson in checking the little things. I must have cleared a nest out of that thing 10 times and missed that. Checked the thumbscrew but just missed the hose being pushed out that 1/4 inch.

Been so busy haven't worked on this much. I did find a 14 bolt FF for the rear and it is 4.11 to match the front.

Can't unload right now as I am RR my hoist and will post that in the tool section. That was held up by my new Miller 211 acting up but that was simple fix.

I am leaning more towards the flop though right now, but nothing is solid.

13334

What a Christmas present Don. Mom had both hers done. You spend 1-2 weeks in rehab, much less really getting back on your feet.

When this is done and you healed up, there has to be some civil unrest just to try it out for real. Not that I'm asking or advocating it, but should Don should not be denied.

13336
I like the idea of shutting off the brake lights and a night version. Having no brakelights when someone is following you our chasing you is a great thing. Less reaction time before they hit your bumper.

As for 12v vs 24v, keep it 12v. Sure more amps to crank her over but more options for everything else as well as finding parts.

12v switch vs 24v means nothing, both will work. Just have to watch the draw, more volts=fewer amps and vise versa.

Nice on the plastic. I have a regular formed keyboard cover on my garage Laptop.

Happy Thanksgiving to all you boneheads too, it was a good one with inlaws to boot.

Brings back memories, my dad (gunny) was called a bull in a china shop all the time.

13346
Did a 205 when I was a younger lad. It was easy and everything was solid and I replaced all but the new billet housings you have. Mine was hanging on an Art Carr 700R4 with a custom shaft. I had a TCI before that and my little SBC blew it up!! Then I blew up the Art Carr too,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Anyway I built a rear mount for mine as you are referring too. It had 2 bosses on the side that worked great!!

13347
Yes. that looks great Don. Now it just needs the rest of the truck.
