Thanks for your service Don and everyone else who served, as well as everyone who supports our military.

Pants size or garage?

My garage is 60x160 at the widest and longest points. Plenty of space to collect the stuff we would have given away or thrown away before. Actually it is a wonderful blessing as, even with the cars tractors, and assorted tools and projects, there is still space for the kids to ride their bikes when it’s nasty outside.

Sorry to hear about your freezer woes. Did you just seal it up and cart it to the dump?  Or did you need to unload everything to get it out of the house?  That’s what kids are for.

Our freezer never stays closed long enough that it would go unnoticed.

Dang Dave, 4 years?

The guest house came with the new (to us) house when we bought last year. It wasn’t a priority to get it set up until my father in-law said he was coming into town for Christmas.  At least there were no real electrical issues..,,except for the messy breaker box.

Installed a new water heater in the guest house. When I got the water turned on(hadn’t been on in about four years) there were a few minor leaks. Water heater didn’t work, dishwasher had sprung a leak(most likely due to the pump or valve having water in it and freezing) and the kitchen sprayer head was cracked. All in all, not too bad.
Today I get the new mini split unit delivered and will see about getting it installed. Pics to follow.

Just in time for guests, they should arrive today.

Nice swag!!

I am now good with headroom(nothing a sawzall couldn’t fix) as for egress, there’s windows. :). I plan to build permanent stairs that will be 42 or 48 wide, but I got tired of watching the kids (and my wife and I) scurrying up and down folding attic stairs.

No, I only have a little over four feet. and when I open up the ceiling(already planned), I didn’t think of the fact there would only be about 12 inches left of the floor above to the side of the stairs. Too much temptation for kids to climb around up there. I’ll just push the stairs all the way to the wall, less places to fall too for the little ones.

While making better of a bad situation my wife suggested that we take some of the “junk” cabinet doors left over from the wrong size cabinets and make some nice magnet boards.   Got some scrap from my sheet metal hvac guy and used his press brake and cut em out, siliconed them in and used some little picture frame clips to hold it in place.
Turned out rather nice if I don’t say so myself.

Built a set of stairs for the loft area. Before the only access was up a set of attic stairs. These are only temporary, we are going to redo this area into a bathroom and put in some easy low angle stairs. But this was only about $100 and it is easy enough for the kids to get up and down safely.
It was my first attempt at stairs and they turned out nice and sturdy.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We’ll, I’m going to be rebuilding these stairs already. After looking at it and the way I was going to open the ceiling up for headroom, it makes more sense to make them wider and open the ceiling up more. So I’ll be disassembling them and rebuilding. They are currently 30 inches wide and they will be going to 42 inches. I’ll cut another stringer for the middle and new treads and risers. We’ll see how it all goes.

Things got dicey when I tried my best to lower the spare tire the normal way. Something wasn't meshing and I never got the tire winch to move! I ended up cutting the tire retainer off and just dropped the tire

They never function properly on those GM’s, I believe there is an official GM bulletin that in fact states you have to cut the retainer to use the spare. It’s really handy when your tire blows crossing the Ohio river on I75 north bound into Cinci, not that I have any experience with that...
That’s not a good place to blow a tire anytime. The fact there is no where to pull over anywhere close is bad enough, the other irate idiot drivers make it even more dangerous.

I’m assuming you mean spanning the entire length?  For added strength?  I did not. It is an 8 foot span, roughly a 2x6 of uncut stringer, SYP #1. I didn’t think it was needed, but If you think it’s needed, I’ll add it.  You’ve got a lot more experience with this than me.

Tech/Electronics / Seek Thermal Compact
« on: December 03, 2018, 12:36:06 PM »
I decided to order one of these for an early Christmas present for myself. I’ve been wanting one for a while and was originally looking at the Flir One for the iPhone. I decided on the Seek compact as it was over $100 less, and it has a higher thermal sensor resolution(206x156 vs 80x60or 160x120).  I plan to use it for home improvements(insulation validation, air infiltration...) and for outdoors fun(watching the deer at night and chasing kids around).

It was well packaged and in perfect condition.

It comes with a waterproof carry case for when it is not in use as can be seen in the picture. I played with it a little bit after unboxing. I can tell you one thing so far, it greatly speeds battery drain on your phone. That is one downside of the Seek vs the Flir. Flir Pro has an internal battery which would definitely be handy if you are planning long thermal imaging sessions. However, as this is my first foray into thermal optics, I chose to go the parasitic power route and just plan to keep my Phone’s battery charged up before use.

Here is a picture of my kids using the computers for schoolwork.  I’ll come back after some more use and update my review to give you more useful information.   Let me know if you have any particular questions and I’ll do my best to answer them for you.

Based on those recommendations and the fact that I’m in the same area/climate zone as Duane, I’m going to say that they should handle heating my place in winter. I’m going to see what exactly I need.  I’m In the process of seeing if the existing LP furnace/central air is worth saving, or do I replace with mini split. It would save me the $500 for filling the LP tanks.

Which mini split are you using?  I might have to replace the unit in my little house(~1000sqft) but not sure it would work with our heating needs up here in KY.

I’d be curious as to what he says too.  the code can get so complicated that there are many arguments over simple stuff and each electrician does it slightly different

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
So I have power to the guest house, he hooked it up with the cable that was already there. From what he said, the 2017 update doesn’t allow a common ground to sub panels from the main distribution. So he hooked up common neutral and two hots and now it is energized. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to get the box cleaned up, the ground bus bars were pretty oxidized and he was having trouble getting the screws broke loose. And of course the nearest location to buy new ones was Lowe’s 45 minutes away.  I’ll clean it up next week, flip the big breaker in the garage and deenergize it to do the work and then turn it back on. Just for reference, I attached a picture of my main distribution panel in the garage.

And this is why I have an electrician coming by tomorrow. I’ll see what he has to say when he gets here. I’m fine with running additional circuits and such, never hooked up a sub panel before. Luckily I have conduit between the garage and this panel, so hopefully we can just pull another conductor for the neutral and call it good. This was supposedly installed to code when it was done, but who really knows at this point.  He’s going to clean up the panel at the same time, so at least that will be done.

Thanks for the replies and pointers. Contrary to what Don thinks of us Air Force guys, we aren’t always the smartest guys in the room on every subject, just the smartest military guys in the room.  ;)

Well, it’s official, a couple of my in-laws are coming into town for a visit over Christmas. Now I have to get the little guest house fixed up enough for them to stay there instead of the main house. First order of operations is getting the electrical turned on. The power has been turned off for a while(since before I bought it). It has its own service from the local power coop(currently connected in the panel), but also has a 100 amp line from the garage to the panel which is disconnected(at bottom of panel in pic). I’m going to disconnect the public utility connection and reconnect the line from the garage, that way it is all on the same bill and I’m not hit with their minimum service fee of $19 a month. I’ll also probably clean up the electrical panel while I’m at it.

Any of you think of a reason I might not want to do it this way?

Living with first world problems. Home phone and internet went down yesterday morning at about 9AM. Come to find out that a train took out some low hanging lines due to icing from a storm that rolled through.  Managed to find the break location and took some pics. Snapped a couple of telephone poles and broke the large aerial lines.

It’s also affecting cell phone service, so we can’t even do much that way. Oh well, they say it should be restored by Saturday evening. I think it’s wishful thinking.
