Just got home with her.

Drives amazing. 17.2mpg out of that beast from Katy tx on home. I was creeping up on 18.5 on i10 but it settled down once I got the state and farm roads.

Driver power seat is a little scetchy. The adjustments stopped working then started again. I gotta look at it.

I would replace all 4 and keep the two Kellys as spares. But, that's just me. :beercheers:

yeah thats the plan. i need to swallow the cost of replacing, but i know i cant draw blood from a stone when it comes to dealerships.

ill be at discount tire on monday to get final options and prices.

Stewie, I'm not a member of NRA for what it's worth & despise them to some extent. However, GOA has stated this has very good chance of success & I like them more than the NRA so.....

Otherwise I agree with you.

that makes me happy. I was a member for years.

306
i am one of the many that find "contacting your representatives" an act of futility, especially after the past 8 years and how they rolled over on everything, and only seek to pass what lines their pockets. I'll fill this out since i am sick and tired of waiting months for a damn piece of metal. I am not all that fond of the NRA either, but I actually think this has a change of succeeding actually.

filled out and sent.

307
.... my old Ramsey 8K PTO laughed at it single lined.

I think the operative word there, Norm, is PTO. LOL! I've seen several 8k winches stall out and burn up deadpulling a CJ up a slight incline. None of them were the Warn M8000, but still. A winch is definitely something you want overkill on, unless, of course, it's just there for the bling factor.

i am anti bling but ya never know if the winch could help pull a prius full of hipsters out of a ditch or rescue a barista being swept away by a flood.

my world is utilitarian, the days of bling and useless crap are over.

308
Mileage and price?

Nice choice!  I actually looked for a year straight to find that exact build and wasn't able to so we settled for a 1/2 ton denali.  The combination of 2500, black exterior, tan interior and LT3 options was apparently not manufactured very many times.  If you ever decide to sell it, post it up here first.  If I have the cash at the time, I would take it.

119K and about $21K after i talked them down a bit.
Yeah, these baby's are like hens teeth. I was all hot and bothered when i saw it but that was quickly replaced with disdain for how much i hate, loath, despise car dealerships.

here's the listing.

Stewie, I once spoke with the head of warn marketing at an event. He confirmed these were the best selling units & had just as good quality parts as any other.

good to know.

first order when we get it tomorrow is tires.

after that are in this order

- brushguard
- roof platform (looking at this: https://www.amazon.com/Rhino-Rack-Pioneer-Platform-Rooftop-Rack/dp/B00KVWEWMO)
- winch

I need to get an antenna run so i can run comms when i am driving with it. I also keep an HT in the cars and inside my EDC bag, but i've been wanting a more robust solution for both.

i dont think when i am out. i only get ferschnickered at home, but never messed up enough where i dont know what i am doing. i know my limits.

312
Warn m8000, their most popular winch & have personally watched them take a beating. More than enough power, don't buy into all the hype you need bigger.....

i dont need to compensate for nuthin'

https://www.amazon.com/WARN-26502-M8000-8000-lb-Winch/dp/B000182DYM

pretty much in the price range i was thinking.

313
I'm gunna get a grill/bumper brush  guard quite quick. Lots of wild boars out here and I'd rather that take the impact and not the truck itself.

Suggestions for a winch that won't break the bank?

Wait, so it still has Geolanders in the back?

As far as kellys.... just not very common. Probably a step up from the china ones at pep  boys, but when it comes to a heavy rig like a suburban, I would stick to a name brand that's known to handle the extra weight , especially when the wife/kids is going to be primary driver. Either leave it the way it is, til the kellys wear out, or do all 4.     Again, just my opinion.

i know the dealer is going to put the cheapest they can find on it - to pass inspection. I'm not expecting to pull blood from a stone with them, but i wanna make sure the rig is squared away.

I may just swap out all 4 and call it a day. I can do my usually calls locally and beat them all up on prices till I get them for under cost. lol.

So the dealer put Kelly Edge rubber on the front tires of the soon to be mine K2500 suburban. I have a serious OCD about symetry and matching components so first order of business is getting new meat on the rear.

Would the Kelly Edge be a good option all around or should i replace all 4 and keep those 2 as spares?

rig is ready for us, so were going to take delivery tomorrow.

I carry.  I know the consequences of carrying where it is not allowed. If I carry there I am prepared to face those consequences.  If I choose to not carry I'm in a "yellowish orange" condition and have an edged weapon very ready.

i avoid crowded, congested areas. It actually makes me anxious when i know i have to or may have to go into a city or crowded area.

Stewie, I agree.  I live in the country and commute everyday to the big ole city for work.  I am a construction super and my job locations change but sometimes downtown at 4 am or late at night is a suspicious place.  Oh I and generally don't like people.   Only kidding, I like them, as far as I can throw them.  I despise being in the city but I can navigate it when I have to.

i do the same. i commute in a few days a week and work remote the rest. my office is outside of the "big city" but i am still caught in a lot of commuter traffic on the way in.

my wife and daughter know i hate, hate hate malls and places like ikea (one way in and out). I loathe going into places like those. everyone has their heads up their asses and if something went down it would be a cattle stampede of chaos. If we do go to placed like that its on off hours.

@ movie theaters, i am usually where i can see who comes and goes and near an exit. We did get stuck in an isle blocked off by a couple that were larger then life. We planned for that, too.

The post a cop out in front of the theater on the weekend. I guess i am supposed to feel safer by that.

The rest i'll keep for myself.

One word description. Presidential.

Ken, are you implying Stewie is an obummer fan? Stewie, be careful Ken has been known to attach liberal stickers to bumpers.......

Im an equal opportunity hater quite frankly and swear allegiance to no man.
I did think this beast would get me more space on highways and all because it looks very "official". the first order of business is the application of my "appeal to heaven" decal onto the rear window.

specs:
6.0 vortec
6 speed transmission
2500 series suspension, brakes, towing
4wd auto, h/l
bigger tranny cooler
after market air intake (engine growl is so sexy)
every interior bell and whistle including indash dvd

im waiting for them to replace part of the dash as its cracked in a few spots (apparently a common issue)

initial plans are front brush guard, a large cargo setup, bright lights for roof and possibly a winch for ranch work.

its got yokohoma geolanders on it right now. i will probably leave those so my wife has a nicer road ride. no plans to lift it or make any suspension mods. i'd rather keep the factory height and handling - plus i dont want to install an escalator for my wife to be able to get in.

323
thanks. looks like she is ours. we are waiting for a dashboard repair so it may be a week or two till we take delivery, but i am graduating up to massive V8 status now.

324
We may trade a vehicle in but I need to see the #s.

The k&n intake and all have this burb a lot of pep and the 6 speed felt great. I'm nervous about taking a note out on an 8 year old vehicle but it would serve duel roles for us.

The only thing this truck would need on my end is new tires in a year. They're replacing 2 of them and I hate having unmatched tires.

Full time AWD or selectable 4WD on that Burb? if it's AWD, they can't change just two tires. if you purchase the vehicle would make that part of the deal to have all 4 changed at the same time. you're right to hate mismatched tires. it's bad news all around

selectable 4wd. it runs in 2wd unless we turn it on auto or 4H/L.

im getting them to fix a bunch of stuff on it if we take it.

when i bought my jeep cherokee back in 03, i didn't know all about the mechanics of transfer cases and unevenly worn tires. thank GOD i had an extended warranty. the whole front diff and transfer case went out in a snow storm. $4K repair.

with my subaru, it's AWD so they wear pretty evenly and i've for 60K on the set and can probably squeeze out another 10K on em, but they're cracking so they have to get replaced in the spring.

here is it...

If in no hurry watch the GSA Aution site... they often sell burbs on there. In fact they have some low mileage ones on there now in Alaska LoL

Good tip.

This one has an after market air intake and the whole 9 under the hood so there is an amaZing growl under the hood. 6 speed tranny is much nicer then the 4 speed we drove last weekend.

We're looking at an 09 right now fully loaded. My wife is in love with it and I hate car salesmen.

Drove all the way to Houston area to see it.

after that we're going to start our own fashion line then get a show on TLC called "Manly eye for the feminized urban [person]"
LOL!

I often pitched the idea for that title being: "Straight Eye for the Queer Guy"

that would be offensive and i prefer to be inclusive and accepting of everyone.

lol.

serious, i could do a patch. i've already done one for a forum i founded and used to own.

329
for reference, here is the exact vehicle we test drove.
https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/681372540/overview/

we really liked it and are aware and prepared for poor gas mileage. these guys are pretty persistent in getting a sale, but i dont think i would take it for their asking price. it needs new key fobs, wipers and all. the 3rd row seat was added in later, its not OEM to the vehicle. i think this truck may have been used for govt work, but carfax says it was personally owned.

drive and ride quality is excellent. my wife wants a 'tank' and all this thing needs is a 120 mm turret on top really.

330
If you are in texas I suggest giving this place a look. We arer in Nebraska and we went here to buy our dodge 3500 for the farm. Everything up here was all rusted out or had a ton of miles. They get trucks in from all over the country. No pressure sales. My boss and spent all afternoon in the lot. Every time we found one we wanted to drive I just went to the office and got the keys. Found what we wanted made the deal and went home.

http://www.northtexastruckstop.com/

im willing to drive a bit for the right one. since 4wd is a requirement the picking in central tx are real slim. ill check it out.

The "great dog turd thread" I felt was informative. It's not just anywhere you can discuss things of this importance. .

We learned that some here have dogs that need therapy.
We learned TRN has cats.
We learned contrary to what one might think, that by percentage, those spending big $$ on designer dog food, have dogs who lets say...... recycle.
Did I mention we learned that TRN has cats with apparently no odd eating habits?

These lessons have value....or am I over thinking it?

everything has value. it's all in the eye of the beholder, however.
i use humor and stupidity to help me escape reality and lighten up. i tend to be a really intense, serious person.

test drove an 05 silverado 1500 today. aside from how fricken comfortable the seats were, i wasn't impressed. mileage was high and had a nice amount of rust on it..

we then saw a suburban 2500 LT with a 6.0. we said... what the heck, lets see it. lol, we fell in love. this thing is a tank. its an 07 with 124K. Its been sitting on the lot for a while so I am guessing the market for those here isnt all that great. Anyway, we're debating using that as a family/hauling vehicle, then getting a beater pickup when my granola burner is paid off and using that for farm use.

we're still debating and discussing, but my wife rarely says she likes driving something, and its in our price range. I need to read up on that year and setup.

i read prepper books - it sounds silly but ive learned a lot from them. i am drawn to the ones where the main character isn't some captain america thin blue line macho cop or war hero but someone just like me who rose to the occasion and took what he knew and applied it.

by the way i carry myself, dress and look - every asks me if i am current or former. when i say no they are shocked. i could be a line backer too, but little do they know my knees spine effect what i can and cannot do greatly.

ive got 4 other special needs kids (which i will make a separate rant about) who are my nieces and nephews who see me as the only male figure in their lives and i'll be damned if those boys see some gender confused girly man.

see, part of me wishes i did serve. i despise the politics and the pc culture that has invaded the miliary since 2008, but i feel it would have given me much needed life lessons. My brother is a iraq vet and was at ramadi and elsewhere. I could envy him for his experience and how it shaped him, but i realize that wasn't where God led me. I instead went to design school and did absolutely nothing adventurous/interesting that didnt involve a buffet.

now i am in the best shape of my life after losing 100 pounds and i got no life experiences to speak of.

I can be a super hero for my little girl and a knight for my bride, own and master the domain around me and rain hell on anyone who interferes.  that's about it.

Well guys, since we are talking about it, I have been playing with a symbol. We created something early on in 2014 and printed it on T-shirts. But I wanted something more universal, subtle, and memorable

I came up with the thing pictured. A Nautical compass because we navigate through the travails of life. The compass indicates the many directions there are, which we may take,

This compass points to a distant cross on a hill. It suggests that we navigate and our true north is the cross. That men of this place navigate through life with a spiritual true north that is the Christ.

It is not done, but I like it so far, and I wanted to give it a long time and thought before presenting it to the members here

Kyle talked about hiring someone to help the site with branding, question is, is this the "brand?"

i spent a good part of my life doing branding and logo design. we can take that design and simplify it and get it down to a simple logo that's easily recognizable. kinda like arfcom.

You made me think of something

Back when I first entered Special Operations, my unit was highly classified. We carried all sorts of weapons, essentially, anything you wanted to carry was OK. Know where we went to train how to use those weapons? We used to go to a certain civie shooting school. You may have heard the rumors, but seldom was the day when a Task Force helo wasn't parked in the guys back yard. We'd haul in our own ammo, take an aircraft, stay there for a week and live with him and his family. We weren't allowed out in public and his wife cooked us all our meals.

Ring any bells? That's where we learned how to shoot!

Dodge trucks have been made in Mexico since about 1988....give or take a little depending on Model. Which is closer to the USA than the Suburu LoL

My Subaru is as jap as it can get... and reliable. I haven't owned an "American made" car since roughly 2006 so this truck purchase will be my leap of faith back into "domestic" vehicles.

Mexico is still Mexico. But even it it was built "here" in sure it would have been built by Mexicans anyway. I mentioned that because I though dodge was an American brand built by 'mericans!

I was unable to serve because of knee issues that kept me from running for many years. I tried to become a cop at one point, but God led me away from that. I worked in the firearms industry, trained a hell of a lot in weapons and tactics, but all of this as a "civilian". I've found that unless you've "served", you get no respect in many areas. Overtime, i felt many of those in the firearms industry were self absorbed jerks who "served". those who didnt were talked down to and often told to shut up in certain terms... "what does he know, he never wore a helmet"? (in regards to a very well known firearms instructor). I chose to exit that world and frankly stay away from it in many fashions because it's certainly setup as a hierarchy with people like me being bottom of totum pole. I refuse to train with people who seek to give me different training (or deny me) because i am a civvy nor one who seeks for me to prove via background check or display of certain govt documents that i am "approved" to own inanimate objects.

Perhaps i need a thread for this rant of mine, but it's bothered me for years.

I hear ya! I've been fortunate to have received a good bit of my firearms instruction from a "civie", and it was all good stuff. I've also done some firearms training with SF guys, and they were all as humble and respectful as can be. I have a feeling a lot of the "military" guys who you've been exposed to are no longer serving for a reason. True professionals don't have to thump their chests to get respect.

i agree. the ones i do still associate with are (rather) humble. There is one i've trained with who teaches the same SF stuff to lowly civvies like me as he does to everyone else. I just so happens cannot afford some of the equipment required to take some of his advanced classes.

Wil,

I posted this up as a sticky because 1. We seem to reference this often, and 2. It serves well to explain the mentality a lot of us share

And

Point of order: One does not have to have served, be a soldier or a LEO to be a Sheep Dog. It's DNA stuff that our maker built into all of us. That is, we are all one of the three.

I was unable to serve because of knee issues that kept me from running for many years. I tried to become a cop at one point, but God led me away from that.
