Further update on Burton:

Doing well and up walking around with a walker and his wife and daughter at his side. Knee looks MUCH better and pain dissipating. Keep the prayers going for him and all other active requests as prayers are answered!

Well, my oldest boy has a spot in his eye. Got back from the Dr and he looked a little concerned and going to talk to a specialist.

Saw the pics and looks like a small growth in the back of the eye similar to macular degeneration (per the Dr)

Waiting to hear about it now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Prayers sent for good news.

An update on my wife.  Her foot is healing nicely and the pain has really subsided for her.  She only has 4 more weeks until she can put weight on it.

I have been privy to some high level conversations in large construction industry up here, avg age in most of these industries is 50.Electricians, plumbers, framers, concrete you name it, aging out.    this leads to a soon to be shortage of workers up here in Utah which would be a good time to jump into the pot and be at the top of the pile when the tip top falls off so to speak.
I was led to my contractor through good means that gave me sweeping peace when I first shook his hand. I told the wife this was going to be our builder and everything has fallen into place from there like it was “meant to be”

Current working environment has continued to become more toxic to my soul. Boring to my brain. I mentioned this a time or two to said contractor and he came at me with a job offer Thursday eve And an open ended timeline to decide what I want, he is all for me finishing my degree, willing to let me use this as a long term or short term goal or a stepping stone to finish school.

It goes back to my conversation with a lady on our family trip, about needing to help youth learn a trade, hard work, working with your hands is good and worthy job.
While I excel in my current position I think that it could be a later endeavor in my life.  Not required for right now.
My physical body is craving physical work.

It feels right, it seems to easy and causing me to second guess my feelings and that is what I find troubling.   Things don’t happen easy for me to often. Much work produces much reward is usually how it goes

Thoughts ?

Follow your heart. I do what feels right. I worked in manufacturing and hated it. One or 2 negative people can just make it miserable. I like the old saying...Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.

My experience & our paths are somewhat similar & framing is a young mans game. Not to mention from an economic standpoint we're do for downturn in housing at some point I think. Manufacturing has ups & downs but development is always pretty steady. Once you gain that MBA the higher management not middle to low are attainable. I'd say look long term.....

I'm with Shawn (did I say that??)  take a longer term view.

Make sure you keep your family's needs in mind too.  I'd love to do something different and work with my hands too, but I can't in good conscience walk away from the money I make until my job of getting the kids grown and on their feet is done.  Thus why I work with my hands every chance I get on the weekends.

Degrees and advanced degrees are not a bad thing, but a 40 year harvard study showed that all things being equal, emotional intelligence is the biggest key to success.  Invest in yourself and consider a personal coach.  In any field, being the best, and surviving any downturn means being better than those around you.  You don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the rest of your group.

Learn how whatever you do helps the company make profit and then innovate to drive more profit.  You'll rise quickly and be considered irreplaceable.

So think about where you can be 5-10 years from now and what the income potential is for the job/role/path you decide to take.  Money is not everything but when you have a family to support, its an important part of your role.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

I would guess many of us here are of a like mind, we like to use our hands.  Further I would guess most of us feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day when you can look at something you made/ built.  At the end of a long, hard physically demanding day where I have built something with my own hands I'm exhausted, my body tired, my muscles sour but my soul happy.

I currently spend most of my work day in front of a computer screen.  Even after a busy day where I know I have accomplished a great deal/ completed important tasks, I do not feel as accomplished as the days I work with my hands at home.  It does not help that the union has a heavy presence at my factory which limits the amount of hand on work I can do to nearly zero.  That is why I started my own side business.  It gives me the sense of accomplishment I need and some extra funds to buy a new gun, or take the family on vacation without dipping into the normal budget.

Being in a similar field, I would not recommend an MBA.  That is unless you want to jump more into the business side of things which I don't sense is what you desire.  If that is the case I would recommend you switch to Mechanical Engineering.  I know many "manufacturing engineers" with mechanical degrees. I also know many people with mechanical engineering degrees in quality, supple management, project management, etc...  Most people I know with manufacturing degrees have manufacturing jobs or are somehow affiliated with the day-to-day grind in the factory.

At the very least I would wait until you find yourself a job in your new field before continuing.  Many good companies will pay for a large percentage of continuing education.  When that time comes look into the University of Madison's Department of Engineering Professional Development courses.  I am sure other schools have similar programs but UW is well known for these courses.

I feel like I am starting to ramble here.  I feel like I could fill a couple pages on the subject.  If you ever want to discuss more let me know.

These two above have some really good points Dave.

I worked for a small family owned company while I built my businesses. There were many days I was stuck in the office, however being a small company I wore many hats. When I started it was a start up & I started at the bottom. There wasn’t anything but a bottom, lol. However, now being gone three years almost I guarantee I could go back there today and still be the most productive guy in that shop. Being that guy allowed me diversity and we weren’t union so it broke up the monotony. Maybe a career change isn’t what you need but a detour angling off would be better? If I had stayed in the immediate area there were many options for me with employment because of my reputation. As they say everyday you are interviewing for your next position.

Dave. TRN is spot on. It really depends on whether you want to work for a company or work for yourself. I have always worked for someone else but always in the back on my mind wanted to work for myself. (Batch concrete or Dustless Blasting business as examples). But I have always made too much money working for someone to walk away and my wife of 20 years never worked outside the house so healthcare was always a concern for family. So as I am 59 now and still looking at another 10 years of working for someone. The window for doing something different is slim to none.

My point is that you are young and appear to have the money issue (wife makes the money) handled so you have flexibility to do what you want. You never know when that could change.

Hope it all works out for you.

I think it is good for a man to work with his hands
I struggled with that concept all the years I piloted jets and helicopters. I worked all of my off time with my hands, and today, I find my ultimate peace working hard on my farm.

Colossians 3:23
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

Psalm 90:17
17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.

Proverbs 14:23
23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

2 Timothy 2:6
6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.

1 thessalonians 4:11
and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,

2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command:  If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living

Proverbs 14:23  In all toil there is profit, but mere talk  tends only to poverty.

Ephesians 4:28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

God's been good to us. Keep my family in prayer this 2018.
- We're tracking to mostly be of debt by the spring, so the better my employer does, the better we do.
- With the adoption process that God direct our paths and be with EVERYONE involved in the process right down to the orphanage director and facilitator (probably the most important link in the chain) abroad.
- Healing in the family

People speak of how hard picking up step kids is hard, from the outside looking in adoption can be the next level of hard,  God Bless you and the progress you family needs to reach the end result

Hey guys. Please lift up my nephew this week. My sister has fallen back into a very dark space and currently has a no contact order with him due to her drug abuse. Very long story, but her refusal to address her issues to be able to see him has left him very sad and broken He's 10, and was in the ER last night after going into a blind rage screaming he wanted to kill everyone and himself, currently waiting on psych eval, but we all know he's just hurting and lashing out, but this needs help now. Mental stuff is hard, and I'm not any good at it but GOD is and I have faith He'll give us all guidance here.

I'm too upset with my sister to pray for her myself, so please pray for me to find forgiveness and help for her too.

Update: He's verbally acknowledged he doesn't actually want to hurt anyone including himself, he's just so mad he feels like he's the only one that's hurting and it's not fair that no one else is...

Sent Tate!  Just let him know that you are hurting too, and pray WITH him for his sick mother and remind him and yourself that it’s a terrible disease that his mother is battling.

God puts people in places and situations to help others at the right (His) time.  I pray that He puts those people in the places He wants them in and gives each of you the wisdom to see it.  Only His peace, mercy, and grace can help in these situations and I pray for them now for your nephew, sister and yourself.

Thank you fellas. Something's working because I was beside myself about this this morning. I'd been receiving text updates from my ex brother in law from the ER since 12:30am and only were discharged at 1pm today, but they are getting a referral to bring him down to Kyle's neck of the woods to the Children's Hospital out by UW for a psych eval. and treatment recommendations. And now I'm just feeling much better about the whole thing. Thank you guys, I'll keep updating.
