 Conceal
Controversy brewing over 'smartphone' pistol
By Jessica Ivins   |  Posted Mar 30th,

MINNESOTA — A new invention takes the term “concealed carry” to an entirely different level.

The IDEAL Conceal is a .380-caliber pistol designed to look like a smartphone. The user need only click the safety and the seemingly harmless phone turns into a “defensive weapon designed with the utmost safety in mind,” according to the Minnesota-based company’s website.

The gun’s grip folds up when it’s not in use — transforming the weapon into a 3-inch by 5-inch “phone” with a protective case.

Kirk Kjellberg, the gun’s inventor, came up with the idea when his concealed weapon caused a stir while he was eating at a restaurant, NBC News reports.

“A boy spotted me in the restaurant and said loudly, ‘Mommy, Mommy, that guy’s got a gun!’ And then pretty much the whole restaurant stared at me,” he told NBC.

With the IDEAL Conceal, Kjellberg says one can protect oneself without drawing uncomfortable attention.

“From soccer moms to professionals of every type, this gun allows you the option of not being a victim,” the website reads.

IDEAL Conceal’s Facebook page has garnered more than 15,000 likes, and Kjellberg told NBC he already has 4,000 orders for the product, which he expects to start selling in October. But not everyone is thrilled about this new form of concealed weapon. Critics have expressed potential safety concerns, including trouble at airport security checkpoints.

But Kjellberg, who has provided X-rays of the pistol to the Department of Homeland Security, claims the concerns are unfounded.

“It’s kind of an erroneous idea that this is any different from any other pistol because when you run it through an X-ray, it has barrels and triggers and hammers — all the things other guns have,” he told NBC. “It has enough metal in it that it can’t escape the metal detector.”

Police officers have also expressed concern over the gun’s design, arguing it could potentially make their jobs more dangerous.

“In general, the concept of any kind of weapon that’s disguised, so that it’s not apparent that it’s a weapon, would be cause for concern,” Bill Johnson with the National Association of Police Organization told CNN.

The IDEAL Conceal will sell for just under $400 and may require a concealed carry permit, depending on individual state laws
